In the past three months we have been inundated with reports of ICE agents deploying chemical weapons in situations that didn't even come close to calling for it. Police officers have been tear gassed, protesters have been gassed, and a school was forced to shut down permanently due to the amount of tear gas deployed down the street from it. But this past weekend might be the worst of all, as residents of a Chicago neighborhood reported that the community was gassed while children in Halloween costumes were preparing for a parade.Several members of the National Guard are refusing to obey Donald Trump's clearly illegal orders to descend upon the city of Chicago. While the numbers are small - literally just two people - it is a sign that cracks are forming in the military and that we have people who know that their duty is to the Constitution - not a fake-tanned dictator in training. A single act of defiance can cause an avalanche of resistance, and that's what this moment is calling for right now. Voters in deep red Iowa helped lead Trump to victory in 2024, but they aren't suffering from any delusions about who is to blame for the current state of the US economy. These MAGA voters say that the cause of their economic pain is coming from Trump himself, and they aren't happy about it. While their struggles are never good, the fact that they aren't buying into the White House propaganda is certainly a positive development. With the government shutdown still going on, benefits for SNAP recipients could dry up starting next week. There is a contingency fund that allows the benefits to keep flowing when funding is gone, but the Trump administration is refusing to use those funds because they want people to suffer and to blame Democrats for that suffering. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson is also working to convince the public that Democrats are to blame for the lack of SNAP funding, but the facts are crystal clear about who is really holding up those benefits. One of the best Halloween parades in the country?According to USA Today, that's exactly what the Portsmouth Halloween Parade is. Each year, Seacoast Halloween fanatics descend upon downtown Portsmouth for the parade, donning detailed costumes and a community spirit that few towns in the nation can match. With tens of thousands attendees present, the organization of the parade is a massive undertaking. And for a grassroots organization, the beloved annual tradition requires extensive amounts of support from the city of Portsmouth. Plus ... a lot of cash, too.On today's episode, host Troy Farkas welcomes two parade organizers, Jonathan Day and Amanda Giles, to discuss why this parade is one of the Seacoast's top annual attractions. Plus, they talk about the 30-year history of the parade, why they refuse to take corporate sponsorship, the choosing of the Grand Marshal, the creative year-long efforts that go into raising funds for this event, how the community rallies together to make this event happen, and so much more.CHAPTERS:Seacoast Stories LIVE on 12/5 (00:00)The history of the parade (02:00)Forgoing corporate sponsorship (12:45)Why the parade is so beloved (16:00)The small (but mighty) team behind the parade (30:44)BTS planning of the event (36:00)Plans for the 30th parade (50:52)How do you want to be remembered? If you've ever been to the Portsmouth Halloween Parade, you know — it's one of the most connected nights in Portsmouth. People are a little kinder to each other, more curious, quicker to laugh and accommodate. It's so, so special. And this is just the beginning. From Monster Troupe to Thriller dancers, Mrs. Ropers, and countless imaginative costumes in between, creativity shines everywhere — inspiring even those who didn't expect to feel it. The night takes on a magical energy, a collective spirit we all help create, drawing us together in the most beautiful way. For years, I've wondered how this happens — how a volunteer-run, community-driven event flows so smoothly and joyfully. Why do even those of us who simply come to watch feel so deeply invested in its success? Amanda Giles gives her time each year to help make this incredible night come to life. In this episode, she shares her thoughts on where this energy comes from — and what it really takes to make the parade happen year after year. They say it's small groups of people who create real, meaningful change. To me, there's no better example of that than the Portsmouth Halloween Parade — a night filled with connection, creativity, love, joy, and community that truly changes the world, one October evening at a time. Listen in — and if you haven't been, come join us this year! Here is the website for the Portsmouth Halloween Parade!

When Adriane Zapien, Boyertown Area Historical Society Board member learned that Boyertown's annual Halloween Parade--a tradition since 1912--was to be discontinued for lack of an organizer, she volunteered to keep it alive. I am inspired by her initiative in saving the parade and her commitment to preserve the community's history in hosting "Old Souls Strolls" featuring stories and histories of the community's oldest buildings and residences. Learning about her mission as cosmetologist, the care and compassion she develops with her clients showcase a very special person involved in a very special kind of place.
