Arachne tells the story of a talented weaver punished by the gods not for being wrong, but for exposing their truth—cursed to spin webs forever as a spider, making her the embodiment of talent silenced and creativity punished.
One pattern that has repeated across the 108 podcasts published since Designed for Life launched in the summer of 2020 is the role of serendipity in aligning people and their careers. Today's podcast is a case in point. Driven by a primal desire to help people, Olivia set her heart on a career in medicine. School and academia did not come easily to her, and she realised at a very early stage that if she were to have any hope of following her dream, she would need to roll her sleeves up and work harder than most. With this in mind, this is precisely what she did, sacrificing aspects of her social life and doing whatever was asked of her at school to achieve her goals, and more. Outstanding GCSE results followed, with Olivia being featured on her school's website front page as a success story. Here, the rhetoric changed as teachers now looked upon her as an 'academic' and as such, started to point her towards A Level success and University. Some careers are no doubt easier to enter if you come from the middle or upper classes. Finance is a factor if you want to enter architecture, medicine, law and many other career pathways; who you know and your access to work placements and internships are also significant factors. Olivia took a year out to rethink her future and, at first, saw Amazon as a way to earn money while she refocused. She is now a Mechantronics Engineering Apprentice at Amazon and is in her flow state in this position. I first came across Olivia at a recent Women in Manufacturing Conference, where she was on a panel alongside equally impressive fellow apprentices, and I had to ask her to share her story on the podcast. There is so much to learn from both her journey and where she is today. So sit back, take an hour for yourself and enjoy Designed for Life - In conversation with Olivia Lane. You can cover so much learning within the confines of the classroom, but with design & technology education, whether at the primary or secondary level, a carefully planned educational visit can add so much.At the Design & Technology Association, we are always seeking potential visits to recommend to teachers and their students. With this in mind, we are delighted to talk with Julie Brierley, Head of Learning and Engagement at the excellent RAF Museum, Midlands. In this podcast, Julie takes us back to a mixed experience at school. Loving her primary school experience, and then finding secondary school to be less than welcoming to a shy, introverted student. Design and Technology education proved to be a sanctuary within this environment, and being one of the few female students was not a barrier to her loving the subject.Set on a career in nursing, she surprised everyone (parents included) by leaving school as soon as she could and joining the RAF as an apprentice flight engineer. Here she found her 'tribe' and was immediately at home, but as we will hear in the podcast, this was before equality of opportunity reached the forces. As a woman, there were several challenges to overcome.Julie is now Head of Learning and Engagement at RAF Museum Midlands, a perfect setting to study all things D&T, maths, science and across most of the curriculum. This is a tale of perseverance, about finding what you love, sticking with it, and finding a working role that plays to your strengths and brings you fulfilment and joy! I loved the conversation, and I think you will too. Thanks to Arachne.digital for their continued support, which enables us to bring these conversations to you. In this podcast, we are going to test your knowledge of UK manufacturing, your memory, and empathy for items that, by their very nature, invoke nostalgia, as we take you through a journey that transcends technological change and leads through a combination of determination, an 'old-fashioned' desire to be the very best in a field, and contains equal amounts of passion and innovation. Sound Leisure is a truly unique company. Built on one man's dream and passion for combining engineering and music, Sound Leisure is now the leading manufacturer of jukeboxes, not just in the UK but arguably worldwide.Sound Leisure started in 1978 with a custom-designed jukebox, and today is the only manufacturer in the world producing classic jukeboxes for all major formats, including CD, Digital, Vinyl 45 and Vinyl LP, with all jukeboxes coming fitted with Bluetooth. And all of this comes not from Nashville or Germany, but proudly from Leeds. In this conversation with Chris Black, who, with his brother, leads the company founded by his father, inventor and electrical engineer Alan Black, the company remains owned and run by Alan and his family, making it the oldest, single-ownership jukebox company anywhere in the world. From its foundation to the present day, Sound Leisure has remained a brave and forward-thinking organisation. From becoming the first British company to design, develop and build a commercially viable and widely adopted jukebox platform in the 1970s, they went on to pioneer the early development of digitised music platforms in the 1980s and were responsible for the reintroduction of vinyl jukeboxes in 2016. They remain a globally recognised and respected leader in their sector, with countless patents and industry-firsts to their name. Their consistent success and growth over a 40-year period, which saw the demise of many long-established jukebox manufacturers such as Seeburg and Wurlitzer, is based on an ongoing commitment to developing better products and technologies and an unfailing focus on high-quality British manufacturing.Chris has heavily invested in his local community, keen to grow his company with local talent, and has reached out to schools and colleges to identify young people who possess the drive, determination, and passion to join Sound Leisure's journey. This podcast was an absolute pleasure to record. Chris and his team are on a mission to make every jukebox they create unique. Handcrafted and featuring the latest carefully assembled technologies, you are not just buying a machine from Sound Leisure; you are joining a family. To view Sound Leisure's Classic Jukebox range, visit www.soundleisure.com. In the final episode of our Misunderstood Monsters season, we explore the story of Arachne: It's usually presented as one of hubris: a cautionary tale against pride. But can we revisit her story in the light of our Misunderstood Monsters theme? We'll also meet some other spider-folk from across the world, including West Africa, the American Southwest, and Japan, and we'll wrap up the Gauntlet of the Gorgon with a look at how Medusa is having a real moment in modern book publishing. Visit the World of Mythik website to learn more and to contribute your theories to our board! All stories told on Myths & Muses are original family-friendly adaptations of ancient myths and legends. Stories from ancient mythology can also sometimes deal with complicated topics for young listeners — to the mortal parents and caretakers reading this, we encourage listening along with your young demigods to help them navigate those topics as they explore these epic tales. The crew (Dr.D, Kara, and Josiah) come on to talk about being the unaligned commander for the Summer of Plunder campaign by Blood and Pigment. They talk about how the campaign went and what was expected of someone who was not actually in charge of a specific country. We also briefly talk about Oak and Iron. It wouldn't be an episode of Arachne if it didn't include some terrible humor as well. Come aboard and give it a listen! ARRGGG!!!
New Blades is an annual model-making exhibition and recruitment fair held in London each year, showcasing the work of graduating students from various UK universities and colleges. It's a key event for connecting emerging talent in the model-making industry with employers and professionals. The event is organized by 4D Modelshop, a major supplier to British model makers. This is the first time the Design & Technology Association has attended this exhibition but it certainly won't be the last. In this podcast we talk with students, university lecturers and industry professionals as we seek to follow each student interviewed on their journey from inspiration, through school and university, to a career in architecture, film and other exciting related industries. This podcast was recorded in a crowded exhibition on mobile recording equipment, I believe it successfully captures the excitement and bustle of a crowded centre, but the sound may not be on a par with our usual standard; I hope you can appreciate why.We reference many of the student models on show in our conversations, these can be seen in their full glory through this link:https://www.designtechnology.org.uk/news/new-blades-2025-celebrates-the-next-generation-of-modelmakers/Huge thanks to Arachne.digital your cyber threat intelligence platform for their support that makes these podcasts possible. The second in a series of conversations about the poet Alice Notley, who passed away on May 19, 2025. The poet and critic Joyelle McSweeney joins the podcast to talk about selections from Notley's epic The Descent of Alette. (A brief note on audio quality: we listen to three recordings of Notley reading from her book during this episode. The volume on playback of those recordings seems somewhat low to me—sorry!—but hopefully listeners will be able to adjust the volume on their devices so as to hear Notley well enough.)Guggenheim Fellow Joyelle McSweeney is the author of ten books of poetry, drama and prose, a well-known critic, and a vital publisher of international literature in translation. McSweeney's latest book, Death Styles, appeared from Nightboat Books in Spring 2024; her previous title, Toxicon and Arachne (2020), was called "frightening and brilliant" by Dan Chiasson in the New Yorker and earned her the Shelley Memorial Prize from the Poetry Society of America. Her 2014 essay collection, The Necropastoral: Poetry, Media, Occults, is widely regarded as a visionary work of eco-criticism. Her debut poetry volume, The Red Bird, inaugurated the Fence Modern Poets Series in 2001. With Johannes Göransson, she co-edits the international press Action Books, which has built readerships for a diverse array of US and international authors from Griffin Prize winners Kim Hyesoon and Don Mee Choi to Daniel Borzutzky and Raúl Zurita. She lives in South Bend, Indiana and teaches at the University of Notre Dame. You can see Alice Notley read the entirety of The Descent of Alette in a series of recordings made over two nights at The Poetry Center at SFSU. In this episode, we focus on primary education, specifically design and technology education in the primary phase. Our guest in this episode is Senior Lecturer in Primary Education at St.Mary's University, Twickenham, Janine Pavlis. In recent years, we at the Design & Technology Association have seen significant growth in our primary membership categories, as schools (driven by Ofsted requirements) seek to broaden their curriculum offer to include design and technology across Key Stages One and Two. Our research suggests that the average primary teacher (and D&T Coordinator) is usually out of their depth in planning and delivering a subject that is often alien and unfamiliar to them. It should be remembered that primary teachers are asked to deliver a broad and diverse curriculum, of which D&T is only part of the picture. The majority of primary teachers in our research hold a humanities or English degree certificate, and for many, their last encounter with STEM-related topics was during their own school days. Teacher training details now vary across establishments, but many teachers surveyed suggested that their D&T training during their PGCE training amounted to half a day or six hours at most. From this training, teachers are expected to read, understand, plan and deliver an exciting and engaging curriculum offer for their students. In this podcast, we discuss Janine's unusual journey to primary teaching, specifically her approach to delivering Design and Technology (D&T) to her students. We discuss how St.Mary's offer to postgraduate students is different, not just in its content, but also in its philosophy, and we also discuss how helpful (or otherwise) the STEM label is to the development and growth of D&T at the primary level. I loved delving into a sector that is doing so well with D&T delivery at the moment and speaking with an educator who is a true expert in the subject. So sit back, get those headphones on and listen to Designed for Life, in conversation with Janine Pavlis. This is a big episode for Designed for Life, as we proudly reach number 100! We are delighted to have Dean Kamen, an American engineer, inventor, and businessman, on the show. Dean is known for his inventions of the Segway, iBOT, and Slingshot (a water purification system) and for founding what he proudly calls his greatest invention, FIRST. In this episode, we investigate the mindset of a serial inventor to discuss what drives a high-school student to set up a business that yields $60,000 before he finishes school and then pushes him to overcome design challenges, legislation, and the challenges posed by naysayers as he follows his belief that engineering can be a power for good. Chris Hatherall is the principal of Warrington UTC, a design and technology teacher, and a Design & Technology Association Trustee. Last year, he came across FIRST and set up a robotics challenge for his local primary schools, which was hugely successful. This year, the challenge has spread to more UTC's nationally and is open to primary colleagues nationally through this network. From small beginnings, FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Technology) has become a global challenge, with events across multiple countries and nearly three million students competing. Dean's vision was to harness the passion seen openly for sporting events held in large stadiums with hugely competitive students and turn this into one of the world's biggest and most exciting STEM activities. 2025 is the 35th year of FIRST activities. Last year's competition saw 3,468 teams enter, including almost 87,000 students and 27,700 mentors across 28 countries, including the USA, Canada, China, and Turkey. It is an open competition open to all, and while it is truly competitive, it emphasises the need for collaboration, respect, and teamwork. It seems appropriate that we welcome a new sponsor to Designed for Life for our 100th episode. Welcome to Arachne.digital, who have joined the show with an offer to help schools, charities, and public institutions protect against global cyber threats. We are delighted to welcome them on board. Arachne, a talented mortal weaver, was famous throughout ancient Greece for her extraordinary skill. Her tapestries were so breathtakingly beautiful that people whispered her work must have been blessed by the goddess Athena herself. But Arachne, proud of her talents, claimed her skill was her own and even dared to challenge Athena to a weaving contest. What followed was a battle of artistry and pride, leading to a transformation that would leave an eternal mark on the world. Discover the legendary tale of Arachne—a story of talent, hubris, and the origins of the spider in Greek mythology. We go over the cards, what we think of them, and some combos that could help you out in your future games. We of course say stupid things and make bad jokes along the way.
In this episode of The Chris Abraham Show, Chris teams up with ChatGPT to explore an intriguing new story concept involving a protagonist with aphantasia who discovers they can see the visualizations of others. The discussion dives deep into the implications of this unique ability, touching on themes of surveillance, privacy, and the ethical use of technology. The narrative centers around a secretive project called Arachne, a panopticon-like system that uses everyday devices to capture and analyze people's visualizations, potentially blackmailing and controlling individuals based on their most private thoughts. Chris and ChatGPT brainstorm how the protagonist navigates this chilling discovery and forms a resistance to expose and dismantle Arachne. Join us for a fascinating conversation that blends science fiction with real-world privacy concerns. Q1: What is aphantasia? A1: Aphantasia is a condition where a person is unable to visualize images in their mind. People with aphantasia do not see mental images when they think about objects, people, or scenes. Q2: What is hyperphantasia? A2: Hyperphantasia is the opposite of aphantasia. It refers to an extraordinarily vivid mental imagery, where individuals can visualize scenes, objects, and people in great detail. Q3: What is Project Arachne? A3: In the context of this story, Project Arachne is a secretive surveillance system developed by the Five Eyes alliance. It captures and analyzes people's visualizations through everyday devices, effectively creating a panopticon that invades individuals' most private thoughts. Q4: Who are the Five Eyes? A4: The Five Eyes is an intelligence alliance comprising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. These countries share intelligence and collaborate on security matters. Q5: What is the protagonist's unique ability in this story? A5: The protagonist, who has aphantasia, discovers they can see the visualizations of others. This ability allows them to perceive detailed mental images, conversations, and sensory experiences that others visualize in their minds. Q6: What are the ethical implications discussed in the episode? A6: The episode explores the ethical implications of surveillance and privacy, particularly how a system like Arachne could be used for blackmail, control, and the violation of individual privacy. It also touches on the balance between security and personal freedom. Aphantasia: A condition where individuals are unable to visualize mental images. Hyperphantasia: A condition characterized by extremely vivid mental imagery. Arachne: A fictional surveillance project that captures and analyzes visualizations from everyday devices. Five Eyes: An intelligence alliance between Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Visualization: The act of creating mental images, scenarios, or sensory experiences in one's mind. Panopticon: A theoretical design for a prison where all inmates can be observed by a single guard without the inmates knowing whether they are being watched. Used metaphorically to describe systems of pervasive surveillance. Surveillance: Close observation, especially of a suspected spy or criminal, but in this context, the monitoring of people's visualizations through technological means. Privacy: The state or condition of being free from being observed or disturbed by other people. Ethical Use of Technology: The principles and practices of using technology in a way that respects individual rights and societal norms, particularly concerning privacy and surveillance. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chrisabraham/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chrisabraham/support

We're still walking on top of the reliefs of the prideful in the road bed of the first terrace of Mount Purgatory after the gate: the terrace of pride. Here, Dante the pilgrim sees four more figures: two from the classical age and two from the Biblical age. And the classical figures seem distinctly connected to art.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we explore another short passage on the reliefs in the road bed of the terrace of pride.Would you like to help support this podcast? If you'd like to read along or continue the conversation with me, please visit my website: markscarbrough.com.[02:39] The figures in the road bed in this passage: Niobe, Saul, Arachne, and Reheboam.[10:06] The craft of this passage: Ovid's Metamorphosis v. the Bible; poetry and art v. politics and revolt.[13:00] One curiosity in the passage: suicides.[15:43] The second of three discussions on the difficulty of making humility a virtue.
The boys (Dr. D and Brady T.) talk about the previous year and the coming year for the show and Infinity in general. Of course they make some jokes and even speculate on what is coming from CB. Of course this was recorded before they showed off what the new sectorial was. So be amazed at Dr. D's ability to see the future!
Athene is charismatic and bloodthirsty, goddess of wisdom, war and...handicrafts. Owl-eyed Athene is not interested in love, although she is very fond of the hero Odysseus and gives him a leg-up whenever she can. War is Athene's thing, the bloodier the better. She's perfectly happy to humiliate and degrade her enemies, including the feisty and talented weaver Arachne, who challenges Athene to a weaving competition. Athene loves a scrap so it's game on: looms at dawn. She weaves a depiction of her own glorious success over Poseidon in the battle for Attica. Arachne creates a tapestry which shows scenes of gods tricking, seducing, assaulting and kidnapping mortal women. Her message is that the 'protection' of the gods is not worth the cost. Athene is speechless and it's clear who has won the challenge. But Arachne has to pay a price for victory. Rock star mythologist' and reformed stand-up Natalie Haynes is obsessed with the ancient world. Here she explores key stories from ancient Rome and Greece that still have resonance today. They might be biographical, topographical, mythological or epic, but they are always hilarious, magical and tragic, mystifying and revelatory. And they tell us more about ourselves now than seems possible of stories from a couple of thousand years ago.Producer...Mary Ward-Lowery

In Her Image: Finding Heavenly Mother in Scripture, Scholarship, the Arts, & Everyday Life
Brynne Canozo relates the Roman myth "Minerva and Arachne." This single story prompts multiple musings between Meg and Brynne. First, Meg recounts the tale's affect on her relationship with sacred clothing. Next, Brynne reflects on the character and motivations of the goddess Minerva (Athena) in the story. And finally, the two discuss what The Weaver could mean and how that title applies to Heavenly Mother. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/inherimage/support

Dr. D made a new friend and forced him with a blank check to come onto his podcast. Thankfully, that friend was Devin from the METAchemistry podcast. They talk about Devin's nerd backstory and get into some insights on how they think people can improve their Infinity gaming. They also laugh a whole bunch because they are both goofy goobers.

This week it's back to the bottomless well of Ovidian goodness with a walk through a couple more vignettes. The guys start off with a look at the well-known tale of Arachne. While the “hubris-meets-nemesis” theme does seem to be at the heart of the story, there are some striking bits of context that complicate simple interpretations—is Minerva primed to punish from the tale that precedes this one? Does Arachne truly know what she's getting into or who she's dealing with? Then it's on to another of Naso's greatest hits—King Midas and the Golden Touch. As we zero in on the details reveals we find here as well a much richer tale than the usual Cliffs Notes version—How does this tale play with the "deadly wish" motif? What about the aetiology of the River Xanthus? And, wait, where is Midas' petrified daughter? Isn't she always part of this thing? Tune in to find out.
Today's episode starts with a familiar feeling – the way your heart drops when a book character that you love doesn't get the outcome you wanted for them. But the authors we hear from both took that and ran with it, writing new outcomes for the women of Greek mythology they think are misunderstood. First, Madeline Miller tells NPR's Barrie Hardymon about her novel Circe, which details the goddess' backstory. Then, Tiziana Dearing at WBUR's Radio Boston speaks with Rebecca Caprara about Spin, her re-telling of Arachne the weaver's tale.
