Rocky Ridge gave the beer lovers of Melbourne a boost midway through 2024 with the news they had acquired Thunder Road Brewery in Brunswick in order to establish an East Coast outpost. While availability of their beers in the eastern states has been relatively limited, in their home state of Western Australia the brewery took little time forging a fine reputation after launching in 2017; today, they're well-established as one of WA's finest. They've picked up a stack of trophies over the years, have a tight core range, produce a phenomenal amount of limited releases, and are in no way afraid to experiment – nothing, it seems, is off limits. More than that, however, is their approach to brewing, business, community and the planet. Born on co-founder Hamish Coates' family farm in Jindong, not far from Busselton in the South West, the brewery he launched with partner Mel Holland operates off grid, is always exploring ways in which to brew more sustainably, has been involved in multi-partner projects to develop new products, and is a shining example of how breweries can lead the way. Even the decision to buy Thunder Road was driven by a desire to stop sending beer across the Nullarbor and instead produce beer for customers in the east in the east. We sat down with Hamish in the bluestone cottage attached to the Brunswick brewery the day before they signed the deal for a conversation covering all of the above and more. The chat was recorded before we'd set up our podcast studio so is audio-only. It's the second of our 2024 Carwyn Cellars / Coolroom Black Box sessions with a truly extraordinary line up of beers and brewers - a huge thank you to everyone who joined us online on the day! We kick things off with Ben Duval revealing some of the behind-the-scenes gossip of putting together the black box before Adam from Rocky Ridge takes us through the Imperial Ken Oats Pastry Stout. He reveals what the brewery has planned for their new Victorian adventure and what the best tricks for brewing with coffee are! Then Ned from Fox Friday brings us the "One Friday" BBA Imperial stout made in collaboration with One Drop. We learn all about the nascent Fox barrel program and just how a collaboration between two breweries works. Then it's time for "The Final Deed", a BBA Imperial Stout resulting from the visit of Carwyn, the Coolroom and a heap of beery influencers to Deeds just days before they closed. We're incredibly lucky to be joined by Curtis Uhryn who shares the techniques that went into the making of this beer, his feelings about the closure of the brewery and his plans for the future. The interactions between the brewers as they taste each others beers and reflect on their experiences in the craft beer industry makes this one of our most interesting episodes ever! Thanks again to them all for being so open and honest with their answers!

Blissful works here way through the Mazatzals, overwhelmed by the enormous, staggering and disorienting size and remoteness. In this episode:Things begin on the aptly named Rocky Ridge opening to huge views that overwhelm, even causing a bit a panic. There's plenty of water and plenty of steep ups and downs to Bull Frog Ridge. Blissful makes the mistake of skipping water at Brush Spring and it's an endless, steep climb mostly down to the East Verde River, a glorious oasis where she meets Dennis and Frauke again. Uphill, they discuss what makes them happy – so many things, like friends, flowers, water, views and being strong. They camp near each other under a velvet sky of diamond-like stars. MUSIC: Poema del Pastor Coya by Angel Lasala as played by Alison Young, flute and Vicki Seldon, pianoSupport the show

Your Neck of the Woods
001: Pat Kelly - MP for Calgary Rocky Ridge

Your Neck of the Woods

Play Episode Play 60 sec Highlight Listen Later Nov 24, 2021 68:19

It's a new season here in Your Neck of the Woods and we couldn't be more excited especially because to start off season two we had the honour and the pleasure of interviewing the Member of Parliament for Calgary Rocky Ridge Pat Kelly. This episode covered lots of ground between the recently past federal election, the wariness of Canadians towards the current Liberal government, and what a day in the life of an MP during a Covid session of Parliament was like, what the future looks like now that Parliament will finally be sitting again, and a little bit about conservatism in general because all too often conservatives now are painted; much of the time by political opponents as at the very least greedy and unfeeling and at the worst science deniers who are quietly paving the road for Neo-Fascism.Pat, Jason, and I tackled the election first summarizing the motives behind it, what went right from a conservative perspective, and what can be improved on. The pandemic and the idiosyncrasies of a hybrid Parliament [some members participate in person and others virtually] were chief among the difficulties in front of the Conservative Party in Pat's view and they tend to agree, it's difficult for a party with a new leader to really take on the mantle of future government when many of the traditional pieces of opposition in Parliament are reduced out of necessity. That said, an election that delivered virtually the same results as the previous one isn't necessarily a vote of confidence from the people so it'll be interesting to see where things go.This led us into a discussion of the nuts and bolts of some parliamentary functions which really was enlightening in terms of the different tools used by opposition parties to hold the government accountable as well as the various tactical tricks governments can use to slide past that accountability. A major theme of the conversation was doing all that you can't serve your constituents. To my mind, Pat is a shining example of this; dedicating hours of office as well as email and phone time to hearing concerns of the people he serves and bringing those concerns to the floor wherever he can. At the end of the day, this is the part of the job he finds most fulfilling and I think that's a sign of a great representative. So, while Your Neck of the Woods so to speak is represented by a principled conservative why do we often see those sidelong glances or arguments from people who hear that we are conservative? Political bleed from other places and levels of government are definitely part of this but as you will learn here, the message is often skilfully clouded by political opponents and others to paint a caricature of conservatism not as an applied force for everyday folks but an unfeeling bogeyman. When you hear today's episode, I hope you examine attitudes like that more carefully because this is what conservatism is supposed to be about. If you want to bring something to Pat Kelly's attention you can email Pat.Kelly@parl.gc.ca or you can phone his Calgary constituency office at 403-282-7980 and be more than happy to engage with you [I know from experience]. A few years ago, the wife and I took the kids on a family holiday to Vietnam. It was such a great experience for us all, the sights, the sounds the unique food and of course the amazing people. Before taking my trip I did a bit of research and found out that the was a pretty cool little craft beer scene beginning to bubble up to the surface over there, so I decided to do what I could to hijack my family holiday for the sake of craft beer. One of the items on my list was to visit a brewery I had read about called Pasteur St Brewing. Their mantra seemed cool, combine American Brewing techniques with the local produce to make great craft beer. One sip of the Pasteur St Jasmine IPA was all it took for me to fall in love with the Vietnamese craft beer scene…The man behind that beer, Alex Violette, was head brewer at Upslope Brewing in Colorado at the time that John Reid, Pasteur's founder pitched the idea to him. Alex loved it and moved to Saigon to begin a new brewing adventure. Very early on in the piece, Mischa Smith, knew he had to get in on the action of spreading craft beer love in Vietnam. He started as a volunteer behind the bar, being paid in beer and now he is Pasteurs St's Brand Ambassador.5 years and 200+ beers later, Pasteur St Brewing now has 4 tap Rooms and has nationwide distribution. It's been 3 years since I was in Vietnam and I was keen to find out how the scene is going in Vietnam, so I invited the guys on to talk all things Vietnamese Craft Beer.In this interview, Alex, Mischa and I try our best to keep things on track as we discuss such things as:How Pasteur St came to be;Making beers with local ingredients and winning awards for it;The perception that Vietnamese palates would be different to the western world; How the craft beer culture is Vietnam borrows from their well established coffee culture; When we will see their beers in Australia again; andMaking beer that smells like farts!Enjoy!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer

In this episode I do my best to get them to let me in on their brewery secrets, which leads to some awkward moments and a lot of laughing! I also pick Evans brain about wet hops and farmhouse ales, Steph talks about selling their first beers and her love of fresh hop beers. We also discuss the challenges of having a brewery along side a cheesery and a bakery with microbes flying all around their open top fermenters!A fun and interesting chat, enjoy it!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer

A few of my earlier podcasts featured marketers who provided insight and advice on the tricky practice of taking an amazing liquid to the consumer and getting them to hand over their hard earned cash to drink it. This podcasts were very popular, and so I decided to invite another experience marketer on to have a chat about the industry and answer a few questions from some of my social media followers. One time drummer in a rock band, Jessie Jungalwalla, spent time in Canada working as a graphic designer for Big Rock in Vancouver, eventually working her way up to running events and experiences for them. She is a certified cicerone, a home brewer and a huge fan of craft beer, so when she returned home to Australia it seemed only natural that she would find a way to combine her passion for craft beer with her design skills.Jessie company, Craft instinct, is a brand development and design service specialising in the craft beverage industry. They have worked with well known brands such as The Crafty Pint, Blackmans Brewery and Pink Boots Australia.Jessie was such a delight to talk with, she has an infectious laugh and knows her stuff!Enjoy!PS - She has a new website in development, but if you are looking for Jessie, you can find her at http://www.craftinstinct.com/https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer

The craft beer world is littered with stories of people starting breweries after falling in love with creating amazing liquids, including Agi Gagic, head brewer at Sparkke. But the difference with Agi's brewery is that it's not just about the love of the beer, you see Sparkke is driven by something greater, the need for social change. Thanks to a crowdfunding campaign, Sparkke was launched in 2017. Founders Rose Kentish, an award wining winemaker and Kari Allen, a highly regarded international marketer, along with Agi describe themselves as social activists, who also happen to run a alcoholic beverage company.Agi is in charge of creating the beers in slogan covered cans that seem to be striking a chord with the consumers who are looking for an authentic beer brand that shares their values.I was initially a bit nervous about talking to Agi, I thought I might be a bit out of my league! I need not have worried, as Agi was an absolute pleasure to talk to and shared so many insights into her world of influencing social change one beverage at a time!Enjoy the chat.https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer

My guest in this episode, Dave MacGill from Moo Brew, is a pillar of the brewing community in Tasmania and has worked for over a decade in one of the first craft breweries established in the state.Moo Brew appeared in local bottleshops and high end grocery stores in 2005, selling its flavoursome ales in fancy bottles with labels designed by artist John Kelly…it's fair to say that it was a little bit of a shock to the traditional mainstream drinker in Tasmania who were used to picking between the Draught Beer from either the North or the South of the state. But somehow it worked, and drinkers began enjoy what a Pale Ale should be, how a true Pilsener tasted and the joys that could be found in a Dark Ale. After helping to establish Moo Brew, Dave moved to Melbourne for a few years where he set up Temple Brewery. In 2013, he returned to Tasmania, and Moo Brew, to take up the position of General Manager and lead the now well established brewery into the future in a very competitive market.Dave has been heavily involved in the Aussie brewing industry for many years in many different capacities, brewer, general manager and Vice President of the Tassie Independent Brewers Association.Enjoy the episode!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer

A young man with his head screwed on right, looking to ensure the future success of his family business by taking a chance on this thing called Craft Beer. That's how I would describe Hamish Coates from Rocky Ridge Brewing Co. in Western Australia. His brewery resides on land that has been passed down through his family for generations. Previously they farmed beef and dairy cattle, but with new times comes change, new challenges, and new ways to utilise the land for other purposes, like brewing craft beer! They describe it as a new perspective being applied to the land, but with the passion that has been part of their property for all these years.Passionate about how to sustain-ably utilise the environment around him to create amazing beers, this is a fantastic story of innovation, perseverance and that good old Aussie trait of "having a crack"!Enjoy the story of Hamish Coates and Rocky Ridge Brewing Co.https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer

My horse adventure continues with my third married couple podcast!  Sharon & Danny Burrier run Rocky's Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation outside of Thurmont. We chat about the surprise start of their rescue, the joys of every animal they help, and how they met!  We go into detail about the trauma of their horses, donkeys, and mules. This was a very eye-opening interview for me. They were also kind enough to deal with a few newbie horse questions too.  Website: https://www.rhrr.org/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rockyshorserescue/ iTunes - https://goo.gl/7HS1u4 Google Play - https://goo.gl/Whff9U Every Interview - http://www.wfre.com/interesting-people-podcast/ Rocky's Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation is a 501c3 non-profit horse rescue ( EIN# 46-5656223) located in Rocky Ridge, Maryland. We rescue equines from all over the United States to give horses, donkeys, and mules a soft place to land after being abused, neglected, or thrown away at an auction to the highest bidder. We also assist in helping horse owners find a new home for their horse if we are unable to take them to the rescue. Our goal as a rescue is to rescue them, evaluate them, rehabilitate them, and find them forever homes. This process can be easy or difficult depending on the needs of the animal rescued. Many of our equines are adopted out to live their lives happily in their forever home. However, some of the equines we rescue can't be homed and these equines become our lifers. The Lifers continue the process of rehabilitation at the rescue while they live out their lives.
