Besides, I had almost no free time. But now is right moment to tell you a story I've been meaning to share.  I've already mentioned it, but working as a journalist gave me the opportunity to visit places I had only dreamed of: the fort in Gaza, where Napoleon stayed during his Egyptian campaign; the Temple City of Lalish in Iraq, sacred to all Yazidis. As a journalist, I also got to meet my favorite musician, the legendary Chicago Bluesman, Lurrie Bell, and many other fascinating people. And I also happened to meet the Syrian dictator, Bashar al-Assad. As it turned out, meeting with him was not all that difficult. It was 2012, the war in Syria was just beginning, and he was as open to the press as possible. At that time, I was working in the Middle East and decided to take a chance by sending a West for an interview to the Syrian Ministry of Information- and they approved it.  There were a few unexpected challenges though. For instance, I did not own a suit and had to borrow one from a foreign colleague. A government official I coordinated the interview with, lent me a tie, and even the shoes werent mine. I borrowed those too, so I showed up entirely dressed in our people's clothes. The only time I looked worse was when I unexpectedly found myself transported from the trenches directly to the office of Kyrgyzstan president. I was wearing dirty cargo pants with knee pads and t-shirt featuring a frog smoking a massive joint. If you are interested, I'll tell you that story separately some day, but for now, back to al-Assad. We met at his residence in Damascus. I was escorted there under the watchful eye of local intelligence agents after a thorough search. The residence, which I assume is one of many, was built in a European style. You know, a small mansion like the ones you'd find in Berlin or Vienna. Al-Assad himself, opened the door. He spoke English fluently- much better than I do. But that was not, what struck me most.  What truly surprised me, that this bloody tyrant, a man who mercilessly ordered the killing and torture of unarmed people was, a total hen pecked man. Along with us in the residence was his media consultant, Luna al-Shibl, whom I already knew as the person who had approved my interview request. Everyone around referred to her exclusively as 'Madame Luna.'  As we talked, she wandered around the room, sat at Assad's computer, and gave him advice in Arabic. At times it seemed as though he was waiting for her instructions. He did not look very confident overall. When he spoke slogans -ranting about global terrorism, how he was the sole defender against it and similar nonsense- he seemed to come alive. He probably even believed his own propaganda. But when the conversation shifted to other topics, he wilted and his already small chin seemed to disappear entirely.  He struck me as a confused man who did not belong in his position. Don't get me wrong- I'm not defending him in any way. Not at all. He's a criminal who has killed countless people and nearly destroyed his own country, and at the same time, he was insecure and it was obvious that his parents did not care much for him. It was his brother, Basil, who was supposed to become president. Basil was chosen by his father, president Hafez al-Assad, as the sole successor to the throne. But Basil died in a car accident , and Hafez began molding Bashar into the new dictator.  I think his extreme cruelty partly stems from his need to prove to everyone that he was worthy of the seat he was placed in, that he was a genuine Middle Eastern despot who did not care about human lives. And the end of his reign as a dictator is fitting. I congratulate with Syrian people on the downfall of a horrific dictatorship. And I remind you, if you like what I'm doing, you can support me and my family. All the details are in the episode description. Thank you.

What is the Magisterium? (Special Podcast Highlight)

The Patrick Madrid Show

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 17, 2024 6:27

Magisterium. It's a word that you may hear often, but do you know what it means? It gives off a very mysterious tone that could leave you scratching your head a little bit. In a recent episode of The Patrick Madrid Show, George from Temple City, California asked about what the Magisterium actually is - whether it's a book, a governing body, or a collection of papal documents. Understanding the Magisterium: Origin of the Term: The word 'Magisterium' is derived from the Latin 'magister', meaning 'teacher'. It refers to the collective body of bishops who are in communion with the Pope (the Bishop of Rome) and are responsible for teaching. Role and Membership: The Magisterium acts both individually and jointly as a teaching authority. To be a part of the Magisterium, one must be a bishop. This exclusivity means that priests, like "Father McGillicuddy from St. Miscellaneous Parish," are not members.  Interplay of Scripture, Tradition, and the Magisterium: Scripture: The scriptures are seen as the objective 'data' of the Gospel. However, they require interpretation, similar to deciphering a vague menu item in a restaurant. Without tradition, a person can interpret scripture however they want.  Tradition: Sacred Tradition in the Church is the lived understanding of the Bible's teachings. This includes interpreting key teachings of Jesus and differentiating between sacred traditions (apostolic, divinely guided) and human traditions (cultural practices). Magisterium's Role: It serves as an authoritative teaching body, ensuring the correct interpretation and transmission of both Scripture and Tradition. This role is rooted in Biblical passages where Jesus grants authority to the apostles and their successors, guided by the Holy Spirit. Jesus wanted it this way all along.  Critique of Sola Scriptura: The Magisterium, along with Scripture and Tradition, forms a triad of authority. Patrick Madrid critiques the Protestant principle of Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone), arguing that it causes confusion, leading to varied personal interpretations and the fragmentation seen in Protestant denominations. No wonder there are so many different Protestant denominations!  The Magisterium is not just a governing body or a collection of documents, but a fundamental part of the Catholic Church's teaching authority, working with Scripture and Tradition to provide a cohesive understanding of the faith.  It keeps us on track to follow the fullness of truth.

She was born and raised between Temple City and Alhambra and fell in love with the art of making drinks in 2020. She started by posting simple drink videos for fun, and now creates recipes for coffee, tea, and everything in between. Her goal was to create easy, delicious, and eye-catching beverages that anyone can make at home. Her love for drinks was recently documented in her debut book, The Home Café: Creative Recipes for Espresso, Matcha, Tea and Coffee Drinks. Before pursuing recipe development and video creating, Asia's professional background included everything from running reception desks, tutoring psychology students, and working as a community crisis counselor. While working in the mental health field by day, she taste-tested and prepped for her drink videos by night, slowly developing a passion Asia didn't realize she had.Asia started AC Home Café in March 2020, the first global quarantine had just started, and she had just been laid off while completing her Master's degree in legal and forensic psychology. One of the things that comforted her during that time were home café videos. They were soothing, aesthetic, and looked delicious.  Asia was inspired, bored from being at home all day, and decided to shoot my first video. After a few weeks, I started posting videos on TikTok and Instagram with ingredient lists and, later on, recipes. Since then, she has gotten the chance to work with brands like Guinness, Captain Morgan, and Peet's Coffee  (just to name a few) in addition to writing her first cookbook.Website: achomecafe.comInstagram: @ac_homecafe__________________SGV Master Key Podcast:www.sgvmasterkey.cominfo@sgvmasterkey.com

Welcome to a special edition of the School of Thought Podcast! Conducted during one of the days of the Bellis Music Camp, each director gave up part of their free time to answer a series of questions about how they lead, communicate, and educate their band students.   The Bellis Music Camp is a prestigious, weeklong summer camp for middle school musicians that takes place in the hills above Los Angeles. Middle school musicians get to work on with highly rated conductors and put on a concert at the end of the week.   Today features our conversations with three of the elite conductors leading the student ensembles at the camp this year. They are Richard Meyer, Jack Taylor, and Ria Kubota. Richard Meyer has been a part of the music education community for over 40 years as a public school orchestra and band director in both Pasadena and Temple City, California,  a composer of over 200 published works, and a guest conductor of student honor groups and clinician for music teachers in 30 states and abroad."  Jack Taylor has been a music teacher for over 25 years. He is current the orchestra director at Oak Avenue Intermediate School. He has directed the Pasadena Youth Symphony for over 16 years. Revelation is not as weird as you might think

Session 11 – Chapter 21-22 New heaven & new earth Consummation = coming together (heaven and earth, God and His people, Bride and Bridegroom, Israel and the Church) Jesus at the centre (Colossians 1.15-17) Covenant fulfilment – “They will be His people and He will be their God” (Ex 6.7/19.6) No sea – Humanity no longer defined independent of God's life. Our experience will be internal to God's life. The life we have “hid with Christ in God” (Col 3) will be fully experienced. A movement from faith to sight. Holy city / bride God will dwell with His people on the new Earth Picture of union/consummation – The place where God dwells (holy city) merges with God's covenant people (clothed as a Bride) Isaiah 65 (Promise to Israel) New Jerusalem (joy, delight, no crying), blessing and fruitfulness, intimacy – “before they call I will answer”, superior ‘wont recall former things' Images that reinforce promise of sharing life - Drink from spring of water of life / He who overcomes will inherit John is shown the city Represents a profound reworking of the Jewish framework for the promise of sharing in God's holy life (Ezekiel 40-48) Vision parallels Ezekiel's vision (Ezekiel 40.1-5) Look for what's missing, what's included and what's transformed? Ezekiel 43.4-5 – restored presence. God fills the Holy of Holies (contained in one place for the sake of Israel) 43.10-11 – describe Temple “that they may be ashamed of their sin” = call to spiritual renewal of Israel. Understand God's otherness – He is Holy and the people are not Measuring, sacrifices and regulations included to emphasise SEPARATION. Key to maintaining holy life with God = don't get too close 44.6-9 “No foreigner in heart or flesh is to enter my Sanctuary” Contrast w/ John's vision Difference between what John hears from the angel and what he sees. The Holy City, Jerusalem, has become the Bride. Names of 12 Tribes on gates and the 12 Apostles of the Lamb on foundations symbolises the coming together of God's covenant people – Israel and the Church John is invited to measure the City (not the Temple) City is a perfect cube (v16). See 1 King 6.19-20 – The whole city is represented in terms of the perfect dimensions of the Holy of Holies. God's presence fills the whole city – no longer hidden or contained There is no Temple. God/Lamb are the temple. No need for separation. Holiness is now defined by the relationship between the Lamb and His people. God's light reveals glory (true nature of things) Ch 22 – Recalls Genesis account of creation in the Garden of Eden In John's vision, the fulfilment of God's purpose doesn't simply restore Eden, it surpasses anything experienced by Adam & Eve River of water of life flows from the Throne (cf Ezekiel 47.1-9) Tree of life – amazingly fruitful, leaves for healing of nations No longer any curse = restored access to Tree of Life, a life of joy, fruitfulness and productivity No tree of knowledge of Good and Evil = true freedom Concluding exhortation "I am" statements, blessings & warnings, urgency "coming soon", encouragement to participate in His life now Questions 1. How does John's vision of a new Jerusalem rework the Jewish framework of Ezekiel's prophecy? 2. What is at the heart of God's creation of a new heaven and a new earth? 3. How does a vision of our future hope of a life with God help us to live with Him now?
