Scott shares his transformative journey, from supporting startups to scaling his own multimillion-dollar business, which thrived with over a decade of double-digit growth. Scott opens up about a pivotal phase in his business, where, despite numerous strategies and expert advice, profit margins were declining. The breakthrough came when he discovered Les McKeown's concept of organizational life cycle stages. Scott dives deep into the "Whitewater" stage—a challenging phase where businesses face systemic issues caused by growing complexity. By aligning his team with tailored solutions for their specific stage, Scott was able to triple the bottom line within a year and reach "Predictable Success." Now, Scott dedicates his career to helping entrepreneurs navigate these life cycle stages: Early Struggle, Fun, Whitewater, and Predictable Success. He offers practical advice to identify the stage your business is in and shares how targeted strategies can unlock profitability, scalability, and leadership confidence. We also explore the common hurdles coaches, consultants, and service-based entrepreneurs face when trying to scale. Scott addresses the "artisan trap," where individuals get stuck oscillating between selling and delivering services, limiting their long-term growth. Key Takeaways Sales as a Priority: Learn to sell effectively or outsource sales to build a thriving business. Structured Processes: Implement frameworks to streamline service delivery, free up time, and focus on growth. Avoid the Doom Loop: Stop over-delivering on custom solutions and holding onto unprofitable clients to enable consistent growth and referrals. On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Scott Ritzheimer, the co-founder of Scale Architects and author of "The Founder's Evolution". In this episode, Scott will share his wisdom on breaking through the common challenges founders face, wanting to grow faster despite constraints, overcoming the limitations of being the bottleneck to scaling, and building an organization that can thrive beyond the founder's direct involvement. KEY TAKEAWAYS Business is hard, there are challenges that come up of course, but at one point while the company was growing really fast the challenges started popping up faster than we could fix them. It felt like it got really hard again, which didn't make sense because we were doing the same things that spurred the phenomenal growth for the last 5 years. The year end financials started dropping for two years in a row despite making cutbacks. We had no ideas how to fix it because there wasn't one obvious reason for it. Every organisation goes through a stage called ‘whitewater', where the complexity of the business causes us to cause problems; there's no one problem to fix it's the complexity of everything has built up and it's exceeding our ability to manage, lead, delivery consistent quality for our customers. That gave me hope when my business felt like we were flailing. There are things you need to do organisationally, but you need to change how you show up personally as a founder, CEO, leader and how you need to build, structure and architecture your organisation. You have to do both. By doing this my company tripled its bottom line in a single year & went on to open 2 multi-million dollar business units & increased profit margins by 5% for the next 2 years. For founders/entrepreneurs/CEOs/leaders, there's so much more on the line than just us. When we get it wrong it's not just about my profit margins, it's about my life, my family's life, my leaders' lives, my teams' lives, it's about our ability to deliver quality for our customers & their experience. The opportunity we were able to create after getting to predictable success was night and day from the struggle that we had in whitewater. BEST MOMENTS ‘If you don't have profit, you don't have anything to invest with.' ‘Folks need to know how & when to hire a coach & what to look for when they do.' ‘I don't want any founder out there to not know what their next level is.' ‘Predictable success is the set of 7 stages that every business goes through, by understanding it we can accurately predict what challenges we'll be facing & the highest leverage strategies we can implement.'   ABOUT THE GUEST Scott Ritzheimer is a seasoned entrepreneur and co-founder who has helped start nearly 20,000 new businesses and nonprofits. Scott founded Scale Architects to help other founders and CEOs identify and implement the essential strategies needed to fast-track their organizations to predictable success. Through his work, Scott identified a universal pattern that consistently created success. He distilled these insights into the Founder's Evolution framework, which outlines the seven stages every founder must navigate. This roadmap equips founders with the clarity to understand their current stage, intentionally plan their growth trajectory, and focus on the critical strategies for each phase. Scott is dedicated to helping founders break through the common challenges of wanting to grow faster despite constraints, overcoming the limitations of being the bottleneck to scaling, and building an organization that can thrive beyond the founder's direct involvement. Steve Preda here with the Management Blueprint Podcast, and my guest today is Scott Ritzheimer, the Founder and CEO of Scale Architects, a company that helps founders and leaders design and build scalable organizations that achieve predictable success. Scott, welcome to the show. Steve, thanks for having me. Very excited about this conversation. Yes, I think we are probably very like-minded thinkers in many ways doing similar things. And I was wondering how did this idea to found scale architects come to you? What was the road that led you down this path? Yeah, as a kid, I was fascinated by architecture. I would like nerd out and draw blueprints, like just for fun. I'm one of those slightly odd children. But I also had this kind of entrepreneurial flavor to what I do. Now, I wasn't the kid on the playground selling candy. I wasn't that kind of entrepreneur. It took me quite a while to realize it, but I stumbled into it. That's why it took me a while to realize. It was in my early 20s, so it wasn't chronologically that long. But I just kind of happened into the business world. I had done a lot of ministry earlier in my career and got a job at a company and within three months, it had been sold and owner financed. And I just watched it over the next 18 months systematically but unintentionally destroyed. And it was one of those situations where there were no bad guys, right? There wasn't this like evil villain that was trying to ruin the company. It wasn't like the original owner was bad or the new owners were bad, but it just didn't work. It was one of those environments where everyone wanted it to work and they just didn't have the structure that they needed to make it work. And so very long story short, had the opportunity to actually relaunch that company with the former founder. And we learned a lot from what didn't work that first time through. A second chance in your early twenties is a really cool thing to get. And so we did learn a few lessons. We had a lot more to learn, which was part of the challenge later on, but the company took off. We had high double-digit growth for a span of over a decade. And it was just, it was awesome. I had no idea what I was doing. The first executive team meeting I was in, I was supposed to lead. You know, I had no idea what I was doing. We organized an executive offsite one time. And I remember they wouldn't let me book the hotel room because I wasn't 25 yet. And I was like, well, you're in trouble because I'm the most responsible one here. You know, it's probably not the best thing to say, but it was that kind of an experience. Right. And even if you take the age factor out, I found so many founders. It's like that. It's just a series of first after first, after first, the first time that you break a million dollars, the first time you have to fire a friend, the first time that you have to hire someone to your executive team that you didn't know before. There's all these firsts that happen. And one of the things that really got me during this stage and that really started to trip us up around year 10 or so was those first started piling up faster than we could figure them out. This complexity inside the business, there was just the rate that we had to make decisions just to keep up, it started to kick my butt. And so, we leaned on frameworks, you've heard of them. You know, there's the Patrick Lensioni's and the Gino Wickman's,

Ep 378 How to Evolve as a Business Owner with Scott Ritzheimer

Richer Soul, Life Beyond Money

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 5, 2024 66:21

How to Evolve as a Business Owner   Take away: The journey of evolving as a founder requires embracing each stage's struggles to develop new skills, rather than rushing ahead; the joy is found in the present moment.   Money Learnings: Money was a source of stress and problems in Scott's family growing up. His dad worked a blue-collar job and his mom worked on and off to make ends meet. He didn't understand finances as a kid, just that money seemed to cause issues. It felt like a "necessary evil" in the background. After accidentally dropping out of high school early, he went to ministry school without money or a job. He had to sell cherished possessions like his guitar just to get by. He learned lessons through mistakes, like quickly burning through $4,000 and bouncing a check. This taught him to track his accounts and not spend recklessly.   Bio: Scott helped start nearly 20,000 new businesses and nonprofits and with his business partner started led their multimillion-dollar business through an exceptional and extended growth phase (over 10 years of double-digit growth) all before he turned 35. Today he helps founders and CEOs identify and implement the one essential strategy they need right now to get them on the fast track to Predictable Success.   Highlights from this episode: Success often comes from embracing the struggle, not avoiding it. The lessons are in the valleys, not at the mountaintops. What got you here won't get you there. As you evolve, you have to let go of old skills and mindsets and develop new ones. Leading people requires different skills than producing as an individual. Make the leap to management. There are stages to the founder's journey. Skipping steps usually backfires. Honor the process. Disillusionment is normal when building something big. Stay persistent through the messy middle. True freedom as an owner comes from doing the work to build a self-sustaining organization. Joy is found in the present moment, not at some future destination. What stage of your entrepreneurial journey are you currently in? Are you finding joy and fulfillment in each stage, or are you waiting for some future milestone to feel satisfied? Scott Ritzheimer shares the importance of embracing and enjoying each stage of the entrepreneurial journey. As a founder, it's crucial to recognise the value and joy available at every step, instead of postponing happiness until reaching a specific milestone. Scott highlighted the significance of understanding the seven distinct stages of the founder's evolution and the corresponding skill sets required for each stage. However, what resonated deeply was the emphasis on finding joy in the present. It's about acknowledging the unique experiences, challenges, and growth opportunities of the current stage. Take a moment to appreciate where you are in your entrepreneurial journey. Embrace the learning, the growth, and even the setbacks. Each stage holds its own beauty and value, contributing to your overall growth as a visionary founder. Remember, the entrepreneurial journey is not just about the destination but also about savoring the journey itself. Let's face it, one of the challenges faced by most business owners is the absence of a clear rulebook for navigating the complexities of entrepreneurship. To shed light on the essential strategies for success, I invited Scott Ritzheimer, founder of Scale Architects, to share  his tips for entrepreneurs, particularly the struggle to prioritize and manage tasks amidst a multitude of expert advice. Scott emphasizes the importance of understanding that there are seven specific stages of business growth and you need to tailor your  strategies accordingly. Scott gave some great specific examples .  Stage 2 - Startup Entrepreneur: At this stage, the focus is on finding a profitable and sustainable market. The key is to resist the temptation to constantly come up with new ideas and, instead, concentrate on identifying and tapping into a market that aligns with the business's goals. Leadership skills are less critical, and time management and focusing on necessary tasks become paramount. Stage 3 - Reluctant Manager: This stage is characterized by the realization that employees don't think, act, or own the business in the same way as the founder. It's crucial to identify and hire the right people for this stage, referred to as "operators." These individuals are skilled at getting things done efficiently and effectively, which is essential for managing a growing team. The challenge lies in distinguishing between "operators" and "processors" who may be overly detail-oriented, potentially slowing down processes. Scott recommends taking the Leadership Styles Quiz on the Scale Architects' website to identify the leadership style that aligns with one's business stage and needs.

I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed by Scott Ritzheimer, host of The Secrets of the High Demand Coach Podcast. It was a rollicking fast-paced interview that I think you will really like and Scott kindly allowed me to share it here with you.A little about Scott: He has helped start nearly 20,000 new businesses and nonprofits and, with his business partner, started and led their multimillion-dollar business through an exceptional and extended growth phase (over 10 years of double-digit growth), all before he turned 35. Here are a few key takeaways from our conversation together:The importance of owning and controlling intellectual property as a prerequisite for scaling expertise-based businesses. Whether it's a book, a course, or workshop, these assets are copyrightable and can be sold as part of the business. The consequences of failing to build a business that can run without the founder. Adapting to changing market forces and building multiple revenue streams is crucial in decoupling income from time. While AI may be a trendy topic, I argue that it cannot replace the unique value that human expertise and personal touch bring to businesses. Thought leadership and unparalleled services are the keys to staying ahead in the market.Overall, this episode delved into the fascinating world of building and protecting saleable assets in female-founded expertise-based businesses.Tune in to the full episode to dive deeper into this enlightening conversation. What is the best way to predict a team's future success? How should your leadership style change in view of where your team is in its lifecycle? Does team development have a compounding effect or is it cyclical? We are joined today by a rising business star, Scott Ritzheimer, the CEO of Scale Architects, where he uses the Predictable Success methodology to help organizations scale and sustain success. Scott helped start nearly 20,000 new businesses and nonprofits and with his business partner started leading their multimillion-dollar business through an exceptional and extended growth phase, over 10 years of double-digit growth all before he turned 35. Scott explains in this episode of The Leadership Project the 4 leadership styles that bring together a team where individuals actively contribute to better the current state and consequently, execute to achieve the future state. It was tempting to expand on the analogies as we talked about the imperative roles each team member plays and how leaders can get a team to move together. There is a difference between fighter pilots and ground infantry, between a pianist and drummer or between introverts and extroverts, and it is in the leader's capability to lean into their strengths that will co-create a harmonious work environment. We enumerate these 4 interdependent leadership styles as excerpt from Scott's business partner Les McKeown's book Predictable Success: ·  Visionary: The Visionaries are the starters. They are full of ideas, comfortable at risk taking and exceedingly flexible.· Operator: The Operators are the doers. They are detail-oriented and can improvise the next steps to get to their goal. ·  Processor: Processors think in algorithms and are risk averse. They are naturally inclined towards systems, processes, execution, and protocol.·  Synergist: The Synergist is what makes a corporate team a team. They aspire to make teamwork essential.Download this episode and subscribe to learn more about how to integrate these 4 leadership styles in creating your team's future success and the recurring remix that a leader needs to do to meet the lifecycle needs of your business. You can learn more about Scott Ritzheimer and his work in Scale Architects below. Also, you can download their free assessments:·         Website: https://www.scalearchitects.com/·         Take the Free Business Lifecycle Quiz https://bit.ly/3umHWTX·         Take the Free Leadership Styles Quiz https://bit.ly/3xG0ZdSJoin us in our mission at The Leadership Project and learn more about our organization here. https://linktr.ee/mickspiersYou can purchase a copy of the Mick Spiers bestselling book "You're a Leader, Now What?" as an ebook or paperback at Amazon- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09ZBKK8XV

Play Episode Listen Later May 31, 2022 18:07

In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge speaks to the CEO of https://www.scalearchitects.com/ (Scale Architects), Scott Ritzheimer. Scale Architects helps entrepreneurial companies find the right coaches for where they are in their business growth. Beyond that, they train their coaches to understand how what stages they work best at. This means Scale Architects matchmakes their clients and coaches so that they have the best people providing the right help at the right time.  Scale Architects have seven formal stages of business development that they follow. Stage one, naturally, is ‘early struggle.' Every business, no matter how successful, started small and struggled in the beginning at times. As a business grows and overcomes these challenges, they move into the next stage: ‘ organic fun.' Most entrepreneurs would agree that this stage of experimentation and scaling is exciting because it's all about getting yourself out there. Delivering quality, again and again, leads into the next stage, ‘white water' complexity. Suddenly, all the go-to levers you might have used in the past don't work anymore. Now you have to strategize solutions that don't affect your profitability. You can't outsell your way through this complexity, Scott shares. You have to take a step back and look at how to actually address the issues behind that complexity; this comes with systems and processes.  You can't tackle a systemic problem from the front end. Mistakes and systemic failure happen where the decisions are made. It could be senior leadership or an executive team, but either way, your decision-making has to match your execution. The truth is, when you're in this stage, even the most senior executive, needs the systems and processes just as much as anyone else (maybe even more.) But what do you do during the ‘white water' stage? You have to reduce complexity and enjoy the ‘fun' stage, or you can do the systemic work to scale and reach predictable success. Revenue goes up during this difficult stage, but systemic failure begins to occur chronically. You might lose valued clients or talent; there is no one event that triggers this stage, but many small failures of the system that build up as complexity grows.  You have to bring others into the decision-making process during this stage. Scale Architects works with businesses at a team level to help get them through the white ‘white water' stage of growth to help launch businesses into the final stage later on, ‘predictable success.'  Want to learn more?
