My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Christopher Kaufman, author of the book Tales of the Ocean City. Christopher is an author, composer, concert presenter, illustrative artist and performer. In addition to his work as composer for the concert stage and film and as a concert organizer - Kaufman has created an ongoing classic epic fantasy series titled Tales of the Ocean City. Like his other works of this kind, Kaufman's books feature enthralling imaginative story, are graphically illustrated, and include go-with ‘audio albums' rife with cinematic music, narration, and sound design. He offers these works on his store - kaufmantales.com - where one can find them as physical books, audio albums, ebooks and the new video books. In my book review, I stated Tales of the Ocean City by Christopher Kaufman is a fantasy and a whole lot more. Although not as character-driven as I would have liked, I was fascinated by the multimedia experience created by the author. In addition to the story, Christopher added music and visual art, creating a full-sensory experience. In many ways, Tales of Ocean City reads more like a graphic novel. But the abstract art and epic music takes the idea of graphic novel to a whole new level. Fantasy readers who love descriptive details about the setting and clothing, and those who love intense battle scenes, will be enthralled with this book. By the time you come to the closing pages, you'll feel as if you have been to Ocean City, battled with Harl'ut and his telepathic pegasus, Vispushin, and been on an epic quest to defeat the enemy - The Vorm. Although a YA Fantasy, Christopher says adults are welcome! I think everyone should try this immersive experience. Teri M Brown is an Award-Winning Author of Character-Driven Fiction, TEDx Speaker, host of the Online for Authors podcast, co-host of The Writer's Lounge podcast, and motivational speaker who connects readers with characters they would love to invite to lunch. She is the author of three novels as well as her recently published book titled “10 Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure,” which is an inspirational account of her tandem ride across the United States, a journey consisting of 3102 miles during the summer of 2020 which helped her heal her heart and her spirit from an emotionally abusive 14 yearlong marriage and also find the courage to publish her first novel. Teri shares her incredible and inspiring story of how she and her husband, a Marine and a cyclist, made the decision to ride across the continental US on a tandem bicycle in 2020. At the time, Teri was seventy pounds overweight, hadn't ridden a bike since she was a child, had never even seen a tandem bicycle let alone ride one, and was still reeling from her previous emotionally abusive marriage. As a result, she struggled with herself-image, insecurity, and lack of confidence and self-worth. She describes the process of planning and preparing for the trip, which included how to ride in tandem with a partner, and learning to trust each other along the way. Teri also describes the many challenges they faced dealing with the pandemic and the closures and the obstacles they had to navigate along the way. She shares her remarkable story with open honesty and a remarkable sense of humor, along with the many lessons she learned along the way, including the realization that she could accomplish anything she set her mind to, finding her self-worth and value, regained her confidence, and many other valuable insights which led her to create her “10 Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure.” Most of all, Teri would like all of us to understand that our happiness matters, that we all need to discover what we are capable of by getting out of our comfort zone, how embracing challenging adventures helps us find our value and self-worth, to never quit on a bad day, and so much more! In this episode of the Journey of My Mother's Son podcast, I talk with Teri M. Brown. Born in Athens, Greece as an Air Force brat, Teri M. Brown came into this world with an imagination full of stories to tell. She now calls the North Carolina coast home, and the peaceful nature of the sea has been a great source of inspiration for her creativity. Not letting 2020 get the best of her, Teri chose to go on an adventure that changed her outlook on life. She and her husband, Bruce, rode a tandem bicycle across the United States from Astoria, Oregon to Washington DC, successfully raising money for Toys for Tots. She learned she is stronger than she realized and capable of anything she sets her mind to. Teri graduated from UNC Greensboro with a multitude of degrees – majors in Elementary Education and Psychology and minors in Math and Sociology – she just couldn't settle on one thing! While homeschooling her four children, she began her writing career by focusing on small businesses, writing articles, blog posts, and website content. During this time, Teri published five nonfiction self-help books dealing with real estate and finance, receiving "First Runner Up" in the Eric Hoffman Book Awards for 301 Simple Things You Can Do To Sell Your Home Now, finalist in the USA Best Books Awards for How To Open and Operate a Financially Successful Redesign, Redecorate, and Real Estate Staging Business and for 301 Simple Things You Can Do To Sell Your Home Now, and Honorable Mention in Foreword Magazine's Book of the Year Award for Private Mortgage Investing. In 2017, after finally getting out of an emotionally abusive 14-year marriage, Teri began dabbling in fiction, a lifelong dream. Upon winning the First Annual Anita Bloom Ornoff Award for Inspirational Short Story for a piece about her grandfather, she began writing in earnest, and published her debut novel in 2022, Sunflowers Beneath the Snow, a historical fiction set in Ukraine. Her second novel published in 2023, An Enemy Like Me, takes place during WWII. Her latest novel, Daughters of Green Mountain Gap, a generational story about Appalachian healers came out in January 2024. In June 2024, her short story, The Youngest Lighthouse Keeper, came out in the anthology Feisty Deeds: Historical Fictions of Daring Women. Her latest book, 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure (Feb 2025), is an inspirational look at the life lessons she learned riding across the United States on a tandem bicycle. In April, her first children's book, Little Lola and Her Big Dream launched. Teri is a wife, mother, grandmother, and author who loves word games, reading, bumming on the beach, taking photos, singing in the shower, hunting for bargains, ballroom dancing, playing bridge, and mentoring others – especially youth and women who are having trouble discovering their worth. "Healing and being healed are some of the most human of all activities, and Brown encourages us to dive deeply into their rivers." Scott's Book Review In her new book Daughters of Green Mountain Gap, author Teri M. Brown dives deeply into the healing rivers of the main characters Granny Maggie, her daughter Carrie Ann, and granddaughter Josie May. Sponsored by Moravian Sons Distillery, Doc Chavent, and author Carla Stockton. Maggie McCoury, a generational healer woman, relies on family traditions, folklore, and beliefs gleaned from a local Cherokee tribe. Her daughter, Carrie Ann, believes her university training holds the answers. As they clash over the use of roots, herbs, and a dash of mountain magic versus the medicine available in the town's apothecary, Josie Mae doesn't know whom to follow. But what happens when neither family traditions nor science can save the ones you love most? Listen in for a chance to win a signed copy of Daughters of Green Mountain Gap. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Mark Sowersby, author of the book Forgiving the Nightmare. In 2019 Pastor Mark went through a time of great healing. He began speaking about the nightmare of abuse and years of suffering he experienced in his childhood. And how condemnation, shame, and guilt were replaced with forgiveness, joy, and life in abundance. He now speaks about his story and his testimony of healing, forgiveness and freedom through his ministry, Forgiving The Nightmare. In my book review, I stated Forgiving the Nightmare is more than an abuse memoir or Christian instruction - it's a story of grace, overcoming, and forgiveness. Mark doesn't sugarcoat the truth, whether that truth is about his childhood abuse or about his difficulty moving beyond that abuse. In fact, he is so honest that he will be the first to admit that forgiveness will be a lifelong journey. What I loved most about this book is the hope. Each page leads the reader down a path to something better. No matter what trauma you've suffered - and haven't we all had some trauma in our life - there is light on the other side. For Mark, this comes by way Jesus Christ. And Mark shares ten trail markers to help those who are seeking to forgive the nightmares in their own lives. Do you know what happens when you hold a nightmare to the light? It loses power. And that's exactly what Mark discovered. It's a beautiful book that will fill you with the desire to do better, be better, love better, and forgive fully. Today on the Online for Authors podcast, special guest host Carol Pearson is flipping the script and interviewing me, Teri M Brown, author of the book 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure. Carol Pearson is the founder of indie publishing house 10 Little Rules, creating books filled with personal narrative and guided journaling inspiration. The books are written by a growing community of authentic and inspiring authors who share their stories to empower others and share their wisdom. At 10LRs we believe in the unbreakable connection between all of us, and relish those "me too" moments that lead to insights and powerful change. As an author of character-driven fiction, my goal is to introduce readers to characters they'd love to invite to lunch. I do this through my writing (Sunflowers Beneath the Snow, An Enemy Like Me, Daughters of Green Mountain Gap, and 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure), through my book reviews on my blog (www.terimbrown.com/blog), and through my podcasting as host of this show. In addition to telling a great story, I want those who read or hear my words to contemplate difficult aspects of life such as racism, xenophobia, fear of change, family dynamics, loss, and war. My TEDx talk relates my experiences with racism (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxYidJsL_Wc), while my books always tackle hard topics. In their book review, the Book Commentary stated that 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure by Teri M Brown is a wonderful exploration of personal growth, transformation, and the quest for adventure. The book is an inspiring guide wrapped around the author's journey of cycling across the United States on a tandem bike with her husband, Bruce. Through this adventure, Brown discovers new geographical locations and insights about herself, her relationships, and life at large. She shares those insights in this life-transforming book! The book's central message is about embracing life's challenges and uncertainties to foster personal growth and healing. Brown emphasizes that everyone can achieve extraordinary feats, regardless of age or circumstances, if they break it into manageable segments and stay focused. Her tale is not just about the physical act of cycling but signifies a mental and emotional metamorphosis that empowers her to redefine her potential. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Janis Daly, author of the book The Path Beneath Her Feet and creator of #31titleswomeninhistory, along with four additional authors from the list. The compiled list of historical fiction represents thirty-one titles to read, discover, learn, and celebrate women who've made history, individually or collectively. Their achievements languish in the shadows, awaiting authors to write their stories and readers to embrace them. According to Janis, developing the list wasn't easy because there are far more books than she could include. But this is how she made her final decision: Had to be historical fiction Had to be written by a woman Looked for diversity in authors – cultural, type of publishing, and name recognition Looked for diversity in the subject – cultural, setting, field of recognition Ratings on Goodreads Here is the list of books Janis has included for the 31 days of March in 2025: Akmaral by Judith Lindbergh - Amazon Warrior Women, Ancient History Asia American Daughters by Piper Huguley - Progressive political daughters and friends, Alice Roosevelt, Portia Washington, early 1900s America Can't We Be Friends by Denny S. Phantom Electric Ghost With Teri M Brown: Author of Daughters of Green Mountain Gap, An Enemy Like Me On being an author Born in Athens, Greece as an Air Force brat, Teri M Brown came into this world with an imagination full of stories to tell. Her latest book, 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure, is an inspirational look at the life lessons she learned riding across the United States on a tandem bicycle and will be published in February 2025. Teri is a wife, mother, grandmother, and author who loves word games, reading, bumming on the beach, taking photos, singing in the shower, hunting for bargains, ballroom dancing, playing bridge, and mentoring others – especially youth and women who are having trouble discovering their worth. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Barbara Dullaghan, author of the book, Secrets in the Hollow. Barbara Dullaghan grew up in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown and is enthralled with the magic and energy of the towns. She is published in gifted education with Kendall Hunt and Prufrock Press and her short stories and poetry can be found in three anthologies. She and her husband, Jack, now live in coastal North Carolina and love spending time at the beach with their three children, spouses, and six energetic grandchildren. In my book review, I stated Secrets in the Hollow is a debut mystery set in the small town of Sleepy Hollow. Not only does the storyline follow Carrie Peters - a woman of forty who has yet to figure out her life because she has been hiding her past, but it also provides readers with a great sense of place. Throughout the story, we learn of the history of Sleepy Hollow, its cemetery, and its ghosts. At the same time, we learn of Carrie's secrets - her own personal ghosts that haunt every waking minute. What happens when secrets finally come out? Do friendships remain? Can Carrie find her happily-ever-after? I enjoyed Barbara's first novel, and those who enjoy mystery will certainly find this to be a good read. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Catherine Butterfield, author of the book, The Serpent and the Rose. Catherine was born in Manhattan but raised primarily in Minnesota and Massachusetts. (The Three M's) She was a skinny kid with miserable allergies and spent most of her youth indoors reading books. Her two biggest influences at that point were J.D. Salinger and Anne Frank. As an actress, she spent her early career acting regionally and then started writing for the stage. Her first break as a playwright came with the Manhattan Theatre Club production of JOINED AT THE HEAD, which she wrote and starred in, leading to other productions of her plays in the city and the beginnings of her TV career. Though relocated to Los Angeles, she never stopped writing plays; so far ten of them have been produced and published. During the pandemic she and husband RON WEST created over 60 short films for a series entitled LIFE DURING LOCKDOWN, which can be seen under her name on Youtube. Recently, she has written her first novel, "The Serpent and the Rose," about the French queen Marguerite de Valois and her lifelong battle with her mother, Catherine de Medici. She lives in Santa Monica with Ron West and their cat, Pandita. Her daughter is the actress Audrey Corsa. In my book review, I stated that Marguerite began life as a French princess, became the Queen of Navarre through marriage, and chose to remove herself from that marriage as her husband became King of France. We follow Marguerite's life through journal entries, allowing us to see her dysfunctional family and the craziness of court life from her point of view. I loved that this was written in first person and in present tense - an unusual POV for a historical fiction novel - because I became quite attached to Marguerite and her quick wit and dry sense of humor. I typically do not care for books written about this period of time because I get slogged down in the details of a history I can't keep straight and names that mean nothing to me. However, Butterfield did an amazing job keeping readers engaged with salient facts, a quick tempo, and dashes of humor. I loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone who loves historical fiction and a good laugh. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Joel David Bond, author of the book As Large As Your Spirit: A Reverse Refugee Memoir. A born explorer, Joel has spent over two decades living and working around the world, from farm work in Italian vineyards to jet-setting as a London-based flight attendant. His recent work in Iraqi Kurdistan built bridges between some of the region's most elite students and the locally marginalized refugee community through service-learning. He holds a Master's in Education from the University of Nottingham, UK. His essay, “Amazing Grace,” was shortlisted for the 2022 Annie Dillard Award for Creative Nonfiction. Bond is available for interviews as well as speaking engagements and events on topics of refugee rights, education in post-conflict societies, life & culture in Iraqi Kurdistan, or travel-related topics. In my book review, I stated As Large as Your Spirit looks at Joel's life during a five-month forced stay on a Greek Island during the pandemic. Although at first glance, being stranded on a Greek Island sounds idyllic, readers soon realize that being trapped anywhere against your wishes is difficult. Though the setting is beautiful, Joel finds himself without friends, without access to funds, and with limited access to the internet during a time when governments limited a person's ability to travel or even interact outside their own home. In essence, Joel found himself a refugee, but one wishing to go back to the east while most refugees were leaving the east to head west. The book is about finding a place to call home - both physically and within oneself. It showcases the plight of refugees, unlike Joel, who had to flee from their home and must now find ways to make new lands their own. We even get a peek at Roma's, people who, though they live in a country, are not accepted as true citizens. This is a great memoir that will make you think about what it means to be a refugee and what you can do to eliminate your own biases. Great read. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Dani Pettrey, author of the book One Wrong Move. Dani has sold nearly 800,000 copies of her novels to readers eagerly awaiting the next release. Dani combines the page-turning adrenaline of a thriller with the chemistry and happy-ever-after of a romance. Her novels stand out for their "wicked pace, snappy dialogue, and likable characters" (Publishers Weekly), "gripping storyline[s]," (RT Book Reviews), and "sizzling undercurrent of romance" (USA Today). Her Alaskan Courage, Chesapeake Valor, and Coastal Guardian series have received praise from readers and critics alike. She's been honored with multiple awards, including the Daphne du Maurier Award, two HOLT Medallions, a two-time Christy Award finalist, two National Readers' Choice Awards, the Gail Wilson Award of Excellence, and Christian Retailing's Best Award. From her early years eagerly reading Nancy Drew mysteries, to paging through Agatha Christie novels or watching on-the-edge-of-her-seat adventure movies, Dani has always enjoyed mystery and suspense. She considers herself blessed to be able to write the kind of stories she loves--full of plot twists and peril, love, and longing for hope and redemption. Her greatest joy as an author is sharing the stories God lays on her heart. She researches murder and mayhem from her home in Maryland, where she lives with her husband. In my book review, I stated that One Wrong Move is a Christian Mystery and Suspense with a great side of romance. Andi is ex-FBI because of what the higher-ups called a botched job. She now works as an investigator for an insurance company. After a gallery heist, she meets Christian, a security expert and private investigator who installed the gallery's security system. Immediately, the two find themselves in the middle of some strange game with the thief or thieves who leave riddles for them to find. Unfortunately, the object of the "game" seems to include the demise of both Christian and Andi. As they dodge one attempt on their life after another, Andi and Christian have to face their feelings for one another as well as the mistakes in their pasts. Will Andi be vindicated? Can Christian convince Andi that he is on the up and up? Or will those intent on killing them win before they know? Today, Online for Authors will be hosted by an amazing guest host, Carole O'Neill. Her guest is Maryann McFadden, author of the book The Book Lover. In 2007 Maryann McFadden “won the literary lottery” according to writing blogs when her previously self-published novel, The Richest Season, sold at auction to Hyperion Books. It became a Target Breakout Novel and an Indie Next Pick by the American Booksellers Association. Her next 2 novels, Cape Cod Light and The Book Lover are also Indie Next Picks. Her 4th novel, The Cemetery Keeper's Wife, is a historical novel set in her NJ hometown and has become a book club sensation. It is a novel she believes she was destined to write. Maryann's books have been translated into multiple languages and her unusual publishing journey has inspired many aspiring authors. You can reach her at maryannmcfadden.com. The Christmas Star is her fifth novel. In Carole's book review, she stated that if you love to read, and especially if you love to discover independent bookstores, you'll enjoy The Book Lover by Maryann McFadden. Her bookstore owner, Ruth, is not only believable, but you'll find yourself encouraging her to find her way to the second chance she doesn't think is possible. In fact, the book if full of second chances. Just as you're sure you know where the story is going, you'll be surprised by a new twist you never saw coming. Any writer who is struggling with a decision of whether to self-publish or wait for an answer from an agent, will recognize Lucy's dilemma and be amazed at how she solves her problems. This is an easy and enjoyable read that I recommend you add to your list of TBR's. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Patti Frye Meredith, author of the book South of Heaven. Patti's debut novel came out late in life and for her, that's right on time. She could not be happier. She grew up in Galax, Virginia. Most of her stories are set in her beloved Blue Ridge Mountains, but South of Heaven takes place in the North Carolina Sandhills, in Carthage where her family's roots run deep. Please know that the Carthage in South of Heaven was born from long ago visits to see her grandmothers, a Carthage formed from hazy childhood memories that have become more imaginary than real. If you know the real Carthage, she apologizes for misplaced landmarks and fictitious churches. After living all over over the South—Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana—she and her husband, Lee, have settled back in Chapel Hill with their Springer Spaniel, Maggie. Nothing could be finer. In my book review, I stated South of Heaven is a contemporary family fiction that is filled to the brim with amazing characters, as well as a delightful and though-provoking storyline. In fact, if you have family - and we all do - you'll relate to miscommunications, slights, white lies, bold-faced lies, and reinventions of the past that often occur between those we love. Fern made a poor choice when she was barely accountable for such things and has lived with the consequences every single day since. Except for her son, her aunt, and one friend, she has kept to herself, hoping to somehow atone for her sins. Her sister, Leona, on the other hand, seems to have it all, moving beyond their rotten childhood. But what happens when truth - old and new - becomes headline news? I love this story because it is one of redemption and love. We all make mistakes. We all try to cover those mistakes up, usually with disastrous results. We all find a way to love family, despite it all. This is a wonderful novel, and I highly recommend it. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Leslie K Simmons, author of the book Red Clay, Running Waters. Leslie K. Simmons writes about extraordinary people at the center of crucial turning points in American history. She is particularly fascinated by outliers and the lesser known (but no less incredible) stories that slip through history's cracks. After decades of research, she followed a path marked by serendipities to the true story of John and Sarah Ridge and her debut novel, Red Clay, Running Waters. In my book review, I stated Red Clay, Running Waters is a masterful account of John Ridge, a Cherokee statesman and his wife, Sarah Northrop. Simmons' research is phenomenal and gives readers a glimpse into what it was like as Georgia tried to force the Cherokee from its borders. Quite honestly, I had trouble reading and could only take the novel in small doses. Not because of the writing - which was flawless - but because of what I learned about how my government treated the Cherokee - lying, slandering, stealing, and killing. In addition to the heartless treatment of a great People, the book also looks at love. The relationship between Sarah and John is beautiful, though in no way perfect. Despite having continual trials, this couple found a way to keep moving forward. It certainly gave me hope. This is not a book for the faint of heart, but one that should be on everyone's TBR list. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Rebecca Hodge, author of the book Wildland. Rebecca is a former veterinarian and clinical research scientist who lives and writes in North Carolina. Her novels WILDLAND and OVER THE FALLS both place memorable characters in situations filled with suspense. She has three grown sons, one crazy dog, and one patient husband. When not writing on the back porch or brewing yet another mug of tea, she loves hiking, travel, and (of course) curling up with a good book. In my book review, I stated that Wildland is a contemporary suspense that will have you gripping your seat and praying for Kat Jamison and those in her care. Kat heads to the Blue Ridge Mountains to get away for a while. She needs to make a big decision about the return of her breast cancer. Does she continue to fight, as her daughter wants her to do, or does she allow the cancer to take her life, as she believes she wants to do. Within moments of her arrival, her peaceful, alone time is transformed by two dogs, and two families staying nearby. Add a drought and a summer lightning storm, and Kat's survival is in question long before she intended - as is the survival of others now in her care. This book made me think about life, living it fully, and what I would do if faced with a battle. Definitely a great read. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Edward Trayer, organizer of The Wishing Shelf Book Awards, and author of 18 children, YA, and adult books under the pen names of Billy Bob Buttons and Hickory Crowl. Today, Edward and I are chatting about book awards – what they are, what makes a good award, why you want to enter, and what to do if you win. Edward is a young talented author. On top of being a secondary school English teacher, he is also a pilot. Born in the Viking city of York, he and his wife, Therese, a true Swedish girl from the IKEA county of Småland, now live in Stockholm and London. Their twin girls, Rebecca and Beatrix, and little boy, Albert, inspire him every day to pick up a pen and work on his books. When not writing, he enjoys tennis and playing 'MONSTER!' with his three children. He is the author of the much loved, The Gullfoss Legends, Rubery Award finalist, Felicity Brady and the Wizard's Bookshop, UK People Book Prize runner-up, TOR Assassin Hunter and TOR Wolf Rising. I Think I Murdered Miss' is his ninth children's novel and recently won The UK People's Book Prize. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Jennifer Manocherian, author of the book Alpha Bette. Alpha Bette is Jennifer's first novel. She put much of her personal and professional life experience into writing it, having been a family therapist, divorce mediator, Broadway and Off-Broadway producer, musical book writer, screenwriter & producer, and screenwriting teacher. She co-wrote and produced the films Family Blues and Boundary Waters (in production) as well as wrote the book of two musicals that are streaming online: Marry Harry, a full-length musical, and Cockroaches & Cologne, a short musical. She is a proud board member of New York Stage and Film, The Peace Studio, and 18by Vote. She is married with five children and many grandchildren—great source material! In my book review, I stated Alpha Bette is a contemporary fiction told from the viewpoint of several characters who revolve around the matriarch Bette Gartner. At ninety-five, Bette has lost her husband, most of her friends, and even her granddaughter. She has to rely on help from her housekeeper and night nurse after a fall that left her reliant on her wheelchair. One morning, after what she is sure is a sign from her dead husband, Bette orchestrates a dinner party. The entire story takes place in one day giving readers a glimpse into the past and present of Bette and those around her: housekeeper, aide, two neighbors, daughter and son-in-law, great-granddaughter, and what Bette hopes to be her eventual great-grandson-in-law. Throw in a cremated parrot, political prisoners, a spoiled puppy, a cancer scare, and a medium who Bette believes can speak to her husband, George, and you have a dinner party you'll never forget. This book reminds me a bit of My Grandmother Told Me To Tell You She's Sorry by Fredrik Backman and The Authenticity Project by Clare Pooley. I think it is because we get into the heads of so many characters and see how they touch one another's lives. Jennifer states that people either love or hate the ending. I'm in the love category, but that may be because I saw it coming! This is another must-read. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Laury A Egan, author of the book The Psychologist's Shadow. Laury is the author of thirteen novels and four limited edition poetry volumes. Eighty-five of her stories and poems have appeared in literary journals and anthologies. She is a reviewer for The New York Journal of Books, a fine arts photographer, and a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University. She lives on the northern coast of New Jersey. In my book review, I stated The Psychologist's Shadow is a psychological thriller that had me hooked from the first chapter. Ellen Haskell is a psychologist who recently moved her practice to remove herself from a bad situation. Somehow, it seems that 'bad situations' follow Ellen, and she soon finds herself in the middle of an obsession. Laury does a wonderful job casting light on several patients and even a family member who could be behind the phone calls, notes, and trinkets. I didn't figure out the stalker. I had ruled out some because they seem too obvious and others because of specific things that happened during the action. I actually thought it was one of the patients that I didn't want it to be! I even suspected patients ruled out by Ellen figuring she was missing something. Finally, I suspected a past boyfriend. Although I hadn't ruled out the real stalker, I certainly wouldn't have bet my life on it! Laury did a great job keeping the reader guessing. Although I tend to shy away from thrillers because they often get too graphic, Laury provided all the suspense necessary without adding gratuitous violence. This is a must-read! Somewhere in the Middle Welcomes Author Teri M. Brown Born in Athens, Greece as an Air Force brat, Teri M Brown graduated from UNC Greensboro with a multitude of degrees – majors in Elementary Education and Psychology and minors in Math and Sociology – she just couldn't settle on one thing! She published five nonfiction self-help books dealing with real estate and finance, receiving First Runner Up in the Eric Hoffman Book Awards for 301 Simple Things You Can Do To Sell Your Home Now, finalist in the USA Best Books Awards for How To Open and Operate a Financially Successful Redesign, Redecorate, and Real Estate Staging Business and for 301 Simple Things You Can Do To Sell Your Home Now, and Honorable Mention in Foreword Magazine's Book of the Year Award for Private Mortgage Investing. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Fran Hawthorne, author of the book, I Meant to Tell You. Fran has been writing novels since she was four years old, although she was sidetracked for several decades by journalism. During that award-winning career, she wrote eight nonfiction books (mainly about consumer activism and the healthcare industry) and was an editor or regular contributor for The New York Times, Business Week, Fortune, and many other publications. But Fran never abandoned her true love: Her debut novel, The Heirs, was published in 2018, and now I MEANT TO TELL YOU (which was published last November by Stephen F. Austin State University Press) has already won or is a finalist for seven awards, including the Eric Hoffer Award and the Sarton Award. Fran is at work on two new novels and also writes book reviews for the New York Journal of Books. In my book review, I stated that I Meant to Tell You is a contemporary women's fiction with some forays into the history surrounding the demonstrations during the Vietnam War era. More importantly, it is about a woman named Miranda who must come to terms with her past - both the past she has tried to keep secret and the past that has been kept secret from her. Fran made me think about what I would do to keep my mistakes hidden from others or what others might do if they found out about my skeletons. She also made me consider how I would handle learning about someone else's secrets - especially if those secrets were meaningful to me. Can love survive the past? And when is it okay to tell a few white lies to gloss over the details of the past? I Meant To Tell You may just have the answers. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Elaine Schroller, author of the book The Bravest Soldiers. Elaine reads and writes historical fiction to escape writing about computer software and to travel to other places in time. Her degree is in History, which gave her the perfect training for researching specific places and events in her first novel, Dare Not Tell, as well as her second, The Bravest Soldiers. She's traveled to all but one of the countries in the books and visited all the sites where the story takes place, some more than once. Elaine was an oil brat and attended high schools in Algiers, Algeria, Northwood, England, Clear Lake City, Texas, Beirut, Lebanon, and Kingston-upon-Thames, England. For many years she has lived in Bellaire, Texas, where she and her husband raised their son. Now, she has a rescue cocker spaniel underfoot and travels as often as she can convince her son to look after the dog. Elaine is a member of the Historical Novel Society and the Women's Fiction Writers Association. In my book review, I stated that The Bravest Soldiers was an amazing historical fiction with a dash of romance. It is set in WWII in Australia and has been winning awards - as it should! For those who know Elaine's work, we meet Sophie in book one of The Immense Sky Saga. She was a nurse in WWI in France but when the war ended, she emigrated to Australia with her new husband, adopted son, and step-son. The Bravest Soldiers is what happens to Sophie as a mom during WWII. Sophie is one of those "do it all" ladies who sees a need and fills it. But what happens when the needs are those you cannot fill and the fear of loss is almost too immense? Elaine helps us see that bravery doesn't just happen on the front line of a war. In fact, the bravest soldiers are often the women who are left behind to keep things running despite the stress and worry. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Carol Pearson, author of the book 10 Little Rules for a Blissy Life. Carol is the founder and creative force behind the 10 Little Rules books. She crafted her rules for living after navigating through some of life's unexpected twists and coming out stronger, happier, and whole. Home base is Bay City, Michigan, where she lives, writes, and shares life's adventures with her husband, John. Carol's words aren't just ink on paper; with a dash of humor and a large sprinkle of compassion, she'll take you on a self-discovery journey — one rule at a time. In my book review, I stated that Carol wrote 10 Little Rules for a Blissy Life after her world, in a matter of eight weeks, fell apart. Her daughters were moving out to start their own lives, her husband lost his job, they realized their marriage was over, and her own income stream was destroyed by her business partners. Despite being broke, homeless, and dealing with interpersonal relationship issues, Carol was the happiest she had ever been. Why? She had begun living life by her own rules rather than the rules given to her by her parents, society, and the "shoulds" residing in her head. Carol offers readers the ten rules that helped her navigate through these big changes and offers great questions and journaling space to help find where you might be stuck. The best part is that these are merely a starting place. She encourages readers to dig deep and discover their own rules for being happy in this life. My favorite rule is #10 - Every Night, Give Thanks. This is a perfect book for anyone going through change and wanting to figure out how to do so gracefully. She has won twelve awards for her short stories and plays. She lives in Sarasota with her husband, author and theologian Paul Ciholas. In my book review, I stated that ancient history is not really my thing. However, once I started reading, I couldn't stop thinking about the characters - even when I was supposed to be doing other things. In fact, I read far too late into the night on a couple of occasions so I could finish. (And the best part is that Karin is writing a trilogy, so I'm not really done!) The Lighthouse is set during the days of Christ and seen from the point of view of Simon, an educated Jewish healer, and his best friend from boyhood who eventually becomes a Roman solider. When a thug kills a member of Simon's family and then abducts his sister, he is chosen to avenge them. But how can he both murder Meidias and keep his Hippocratic oath? Karin did a great job describing Simon's struggle to be everything he was meant to be as well as everything he has been asked to be. Despite a setting and time far removed from my own, I think all readers will understand that challenge. As a #researchjunkie, I stand in awe of Karin's tremendous research, and how she was able to bring me into Simon's world. She shows readers what it was like to be Jewish during Roman rule, whether focusing on family and religious traditions or the fear of those in power. This is an excellent read, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves great character development, historical fiction, and escaping into a story.
