"How the Grinch Stole Christmas" was originally published in 1957. I don't know why the hell I thought it was in the late 1800's. I might have just thought that the plot was a tad archaic because of a monster being profiled terrorizing a community was a sound theme in like 1860. Either way this story was incredible to actually read. The rhyming format is beautiful and flows well, Dr. Seuss could have been a rapper today and still be better than 80% of the rappers today. Fun Fact, he was 53 years old when he wrote the Grinch. Another fun fact, the Grinch waited 53 years to go into whoville to infiltrate their town. It has been theorized that this story was for Seuss himself as he was not the biggest fan of the "materialism" that Christmas seemed to embody. Today, we read again as part of our series on Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lanksy from, "The Mafia: Encyclopedia Second Edition" by Carl Sifakis. The SS Normandie was a French cruise ship that was taken out of fleet by way of arson in 1942. A cruise liner that was being converted to a warship was under US control at the time as it was at port in New York City while France was being occupied by Germany. Because of the conflict the US Navy seized the ship and took over to create an aircraft carrier as to not allow this back into the hands of the Germans. At 1,029 feet long and 119 feet wide this was not going to go unnoticed when Lucky Luciano and Frank Anastasia put together the coup to bring the cruise ship down. After the boat capsized, Thomas Dewey yielded to Lucky Luciano and releasing him from his 30-50 year prison term in thanks for keeping the ports safeguarded.    The Five points gang saw many graduates but none as infamous as Al Capone and Lucky Luciano. Paul Kelly was last to be the figure head of the once infamous regime. Lovecraft, who is considered by many as a forefather of the macabre genre of writing. "The Outsider" is the story of a being that has been long destitute to a very dark place in a castle for an unknown period of time. Kind hearted in its nature the being makes a trek to the surface to finally experience the actual light and sun that has been missing from all this time passed. Upon arrival things are just as glorious as it thought they would be. The being also makes the acquaintance of folks that are leisurely enjoying their evening. That is when the story really turns up. This is the first time I have read from Mr. Lovecraft and won't be the last, I enjoyed this thoroughly. We close out this Halloween month with a bang with, "The Outsider", enjoy. This is by far my favorite story that I have read in a while. Short sweet, creepy, hilarious. It has all the elements for the show. I will try to explain but the brevity of it will still leave a lot to be learned. This is a story of a sister about to die who invariably projects how her afterlife will turn out. That is all I can say without giving the whole things away. I love the style of writing here as I legit felt the twist at the end. "The Squaw" is a peculiar story in that the couple featured decided it would be a good idea to include a third wheel on their honeymoon. As if it wasn't enough effort to manage emotions for your spouse to try and "be there" for a third person who happens to also be a stranger took me a while to digest - still am.  Having said that they take their trip to Nurnberg in hopes of the romantic getaway. What better place to visit than the acclaimed "Torture Chamber" -  the name alone exudes love...clearly. They come across a cat with her new kitten and the stranger incidentally kills it with a rock dropped from 60 feet up. With brains everywhere, mama cat tries to avenge it's kittens untimely demise. The chapter covers ghostly experiences and history behind the city and county building in downtown Salt Lake City - 451 S State St. We follow Bill as he depicts vivid stories to a ghost hunting crew of happenings in the building. From children playing in the bathroom to the mayor that was there when it was first built, R.N. Baskin entering his old offices, wrapping up with sightings of Joe Hill with accompanied pictures to back it up. This was fun playing with voices and reading the history, I did not realize this was made in spite of the LDS temple as to show that Utah had in fact a separation of church and state AND built/funded by the freemasons. I really had a great time learning, reading, and playing with this narration. Chapter 10, which details the experience of the 1004 ALCS matchup between the Joe Torre Led New York Yankees and the Terry Francona Led Boston Red Sox. Famous for the 3-0 lead that Yankees relinquished which led to the Red Sox winning their first World Series in 86 years. The inner workings of the clubhouse were not just interesting but they were telling of how the demise happened. As an avid Yankees fan myself, it was particularly difficult for me to read as I relived this sports nightmare. Nevertheless I was intrigued at how Joe Torre was taking this all in. As a provocative thinker, essayist, and cultural icon, Mr. Baldwin did not mince words during the civil rights movement of the Sixties in the USA. The Library of America thankfully compiled some of his most important pieces of writing to bring today's story for us, "The Discovery of What It Means to be an American".  James Baldwin lived in France for much of his adult life where he found his voice and writing style to give to the world. One of my biggest takeaways was the, "social paranoia" that we experience here in America when it comes to our status. Keeping up with the Jones' some may say. Did you miss me?  What a way to dive back into your favorite storyteling podcast than to finally start to read some Bible Stories. Initially, I had pulled non King James versions for an easier interpretation. But, Adam and Mike insisted that we read from the good ol' 1611 publication of the King James version. I have not read the bible front to back. These two have a better understanding of some of the messages that are portrayed through what I preceive as tall tales meant to teach. I just find it more extreme than not with these damn stories. *Explicit Content* In this episode we read out of, "The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror 23"!   I strolled my happy ass into Barnes and noble recently to go pick up, "The Art of the Donald".  Seriously - I did.  Instead I got lost in the short stories and damn mystery/horror section again.  Mind you, after watching, "IT" I was itching to read something scary. So, in short, fuck you Donald, a short ass fictional story won that purchase escapade. I quickly was enthralled with all the new authors I was being introduced to, the new takes on horror, and just a big ass book full of content to introduce to you all!  Mark Samuels has a very expansive vocabulary and a way to breakdown a location so well.  "The tower" will show you that.  In my attempt to pronounce words that I was just reading whilst also keeping pace with the momentus story line was a pleasure. *Explicit Content* In this episode we read from the, "Complete Tales and Stories of Edgar Allen Poe" by Edgar Allen Poe.   As we all know, Poe was very influential in his works of short stories, parables, and poems.  In that he created a genre of writing that was not soon forgotten.  I might crown him essentially the horror novelist of his time and perhaps the century.  The ideas he had and told were beyond captivating or mind boggling, I say more thought provoking if nothing else.  The story I read today, "Shadow - A Parable" is no different. In what could only be explained as a scary story for kids during the time of the plague and to instill fear of going outside to not be infected, this parable hits deep as it contains, "The Shadow".  This character as you will find out bears the voice of thousands of dead that have fallen before the 7 youth.
