A&M EDM Ltd is an engineering solutions company always striving to maximise its service to clients in the aerospace, motorsport, automotive, marine, medical, rail, defence and general subcontract sectors. To achieve this, the West Midlands company has invested in a diverse range of technology that spans from 3, 4 and 5-axis machine tools and laser welding to laser calibration and more. However, the foundations of the company stem back to its 2002 inception where it all started with a Sodick wire EDM machine from Sodi-Tech. Wind forward more than 20 years and the Smethwick manufacturer has upward of 60 machine tools with 36 of those supplied by Sodi-Tech. This includes a complete selection of Sodick wire and die-sink EDM machines, EDM hole drilling and high-speed machining centres. Like many subcontract manufacturers, A&M EDM machines a variety of materials that include stainless steel, mild steel, aluminium, inconel, titanium and exotics with a variety of production demands from bespoke one-offs and short runs through to longer run batches for its customers – but one thing that has remained a constant from day one is the technology and support from Sodi-Tech.   A&M EDM Ltd Owner and Managing Director Mark Wingfield says: “My relationship with Sodi-Tech dates way back to the very start. At the moment, we have 36 Sodick machines and this includes a complete variety of machines. A&M EDM specialises in lots of products. We make everything from parts that go into the ocean to parts that go to Mars. The machines have to be reliable because of the accuracy of the work we do. When you spend so much money on machine tools, you want the machines to last. The Sodick machines are very reliable and rarely break down - if you look after the machines, they will look after you. Having used other machines as well as Sodick machines, I always felt that Sodick are the best machines for me. The brand has made this business what it is today. We have taken this business from two people up to 78 people working here. So, I can only speak very highly of the machines, you really are paying for the best kit on the market.” Adding to this, Lee Finch, Production Director at A&M EDM says: “We offer next day turnaround and if the machines are not running efficiently, or running overnight as we planned them to, we simply cannot offer that service. What I love about the Sodick machines is how user-friendly they are. You can get jobs up and cutting very quickly without having to go into any extensive technical depth with the machine. However, there is the facility for advanced technical operation in the background, but if you just want a quick fix where you can get the machine up and running for a quick turnaround job, the machines are so easy to operate.” Bal Dulay, Account Manager at Sodi-Tech says: “It's great to see so many of our machines on the shop floor. In fact, A&M EDM is the largest user of our machines across the UK and Europe. A&M EDM trusts our machines, so they know that the parts they are producing are of the highest quality. This gives A&M EDM the confidence to know that their customers are getting what they need. This is not a customer-supplier relationship, this is a partnership that A&M have with Sodi-Tech. They trust us and know that we will supply a machine that will do the job and support their goals for the future.” Over the years the company has acquired everything from the AQ537L, AQ750L, AQ750LH and AQ900L through to the AG60L, AG80L, AG100L, AQ35L, AL60G and the most recent ALC600G. Looking at the latest ALC600G machine that is just been installed, Lee Finch continues: “This machine offers us a new facility where we can ‘turn and burn' using full 8-axis controlling. When we are looking in the market for new machinery, myself and the other directors at A&M will evaluate what we are looking for and what we are trying to offer to our customers. We also need to identify how our business is going to get the benefit from that purchase. The more advanced technology that Sodi-Tech can offer, then there is more technology that we can offer to offer our customers - and this is how we have arrived at this 8-axis ‘turn and burn' machine. It gives us the facility to offer a new service to the market.” Sodick's ALC600G range of machines that are referred to as ‘turn and burn' comes with a new standard – the ‘iGroove' edition with a wire rotation mechanism. This patented innovation rotates the wire during the skim-cut operation so that workpieces are machined from top to bottom with the ‘unconsumed' surface of the wire. Conventionally, wire electrodes are controlled solely by tension and running speed, while being constrained by a die. Sodick's iGroove rotation mechanism provides additional control over the wire, resulting in increased surface quality and improved geometric accuracy, whilst at the same time minimising wire consumption. From a specification perspective, the machine incorporates linear motors and absolute precision linear scales in the X, Y, U and V axes with an X, Y and Z axis travel of 600 by 400 by 350mm and a U and V axis movement of 150 by 150mm. With a maximum wire speed of 420mm/sec that cuts with speed and precision in a 1050 by 710mm work tank, the ALC600G is a precision high-speed performer with a compact footprint to suit any machine shop.

The Throstle Club is a programme produced by Black Country Radio Xtra and presented by Norman Bartlam and Bob Downing. It is a monthly programme which looks back on the long and proud history of West Bromwich Albion featuring interviews with former players and reminiscences from supporters of the club. The studio guest is well known Baggies man John Homer. The key interview is with former Albion player Lyndon Hughes. He talks about his early playing days as a lad in Smethwick and about his astonishing recovery from having a kidney removed - which could have ended his career in the early 1970s. Following the recent Malta v England game, we have a feature on Albion players who also played for clubs in Malta, including a look at a Floriana, a club that won the Maltese League under the inspired leadership of former Baggies man George Shaw. Special thanks go to Kenny Roberts of the Floriana media team and Maltese Albion fan Conrad Chircop of Look Back in Albion facebook page. Comradeship amongst lifelong Albion fans is a common thing, and this is exemplified by a dedicated group who have been to Fuengirola in Spain in memory of former Albion supporters; Richie Brentnall and Geoff Waters. This hour-long programme was first broadcast on Black Country Radio and is also available on the Black Country Xtra On Demand service.

Bear Bookshop aims to be a place that develops and encourages a child's enjoyment of reading, love of learning and sense of wonder, and to help children and parents experience the joy of reading and learning. “THE HAUNTED SMETHWICK BATHS” and More Strange But True Tales! #WeirdDarknessIN THIS EPISODE: A 1930s art deco swimming pool is not the first place you think of when people mention the most haunted places in the country. So why is this 85-year-old building bursting at the seams with spirits and specters? The answer to that is not any easy one to give.  (The Haunted Smethwick Baths) *** They look strange, there's a weird otherworldliness to them, when encountered people often find the've lost hours of time with no memory, and the beings are often known to abduct people in the middle of the night. It sounds like I'm describing alien abduction – but the same, all of it, can also be said of fairie folk in European legend. Is it possible there is a connection? Could the mythical fairies of old actually be the extraterrestrials we tell stories about today? (The Extraterrestrials Want Twinkies) *** Elsie Eiler pays taxes... to herself. Women's lives were transformed in the Black Country between 1945-1968. During these years of prosperity and full employment new appliances relieved some of the domestic drudgery that had dominated domestic life in earlier years. For the first time many working class families had the income to buy new cookers and other appliances - many of which were made in Black Country factories. At the same time the landscape was changing for the better.  Derelict land was being reclaimed and most importantly the region's notoriously poor housing was being systematically swept away. And for young people there were new schools and plenty of well paid jobs for both girls and boys with many companies keen to hire apprentices. In these post-war years the Black Country was truly forging ahead. Simon Briercliffe, a historian and author based at the Black Country Living Museum (BCLM) discusses this vibrant period and describes how it will be celebrated in the exciting new extension to the BCLM currently under construction. The Black Country (1945-1966) The post-war years transformed the Black Country of the English Midlands. The region was a driving force in the country's industrial recovery and this was a golden era of working class prosperity with full employment and high wages. But it was also a time of social tension.  The region's industry desperately needed labour to satisfy continuing demand. Attracted by the promise of high wages, an increasing number of men came to the Black Country towns like Smethwick and Wolverhampton from the Caribbean and the Indian Sub-Continent to fill these jobs. Racial tensions grew, fuelled and encouraged by some local politicians. Simon Briercliffe, a historian of the Black Country based at the Black Country Living Museum (BCLM) discusses the causes of these tensions with our publisher, Mike Gibbs. The Chance Brothers and Company glassworks began producing glass in 1824 at their facility in Smethwick, West Midlands, England. Before too long, the company became known as the best glass manufacturer in Britain. In addition to producing sheet glass, Chance Brothers perfected methods of manufacturing optical glass for telescopes. In 1848, Chance Brothers began working on the manufacture of Fresnel lenses for use in lighthouses. A first-order lens was created and displayed in the Crystal Palace at London’s Great Exhibition of 1851. James Chance worked with Trinity House to adjust the lenses already in British lighthouses so that they were more efficient. The Chance Glassworks and canal. courtesy of Chance Heritage Trust. The company’s lenses were eventually used in approximately 2500 lighthouses worldwide. The lenses were all sizes, including 13 hyper-radial lenses, which were the largest ever used. Chance Brothers also became involved in the production of prefabricated cast-iron lighthouse towers. In addition, they made lanterns and other components for lightships, and clockworks used to drive the rotation of lenses in lighthouses. After the violence directed at black people in Nottingham and Notting Hill in the 1950s, and the naked racism expressed in Smethwick during the 1964 general election, a group of pioneering West Indians came up with a simple and defiant riposte: Carnival. In Queens of Chapeltown, Colin Grant goes behind the scenes of Carnival to its Leeds West Indian HQ in Chapeltown - amidst the glue guns, sequins and feathers - to capture that moment of extraordinary transformation, 50 years on: the birth of a tradition which, for one weekend in August, would wash away the bad taste of anti immigrant sentiment with a burst of colour and flash of exuberance that would forever change Britain. Grant travels to Leeds to talk with the pioneers and celebrate the endurance and growth of Carnival. Produced and presented by Colin Grant.

How industrial pollution affected the lives of Black Country folk

Well-known Black Country broadcaster, Graham Fisher explores the true human cost of pollution caused by rapid expansion of 19th century industry in the Black Country. He talks to Dr Janet Sullivan, Honorary Research Fellow at The University of Birmingham who has made a unique study of the impact of the industrial revolution on the health of the people of Oldbury. She has revealed how what we now know as “acid rain” regularly fell on the town and how the water supply was poisoned by 150 000 cubic yards of toxic waste in “Blue Billy” next to the river. While many employers recognised some of the implications of pollution, no-one really understood its consequences or how it could be controlled. Some believed that toxic fumes could effectively be stopped by paling fences and others argued that taller chimneys would overcome the problem of pollution; not realising that it just moved it to the next town. Meanwhile, for decades children died while workers were disfigured and crippled by handling the toxic chemicals used in industries such as glassmaking.
