Alan Steinfeld Welcomes Robert Schoch to New Realities In this episode of New Realities / Portal to Ascension Radio, host Alan Steinfeld welcomes geologist and author Robert Schoch for a wide-ranging conversation about ancient civilization, the Great Sphinx, John Anthony West, solar outbursts, and what the past may reveal about humanity's future. Alan introduces Schoch as a geologist whose work helped bring geological analysis into controversial archaeological questions, especially through his redating of the Great Sphinx. Schoch explains that he teaches at Boston University, holds a PhD from Yale in geology and geophysics, and believes there was an earlier sophisticated cycle of civilization dating back to at least around 10,000 BC. John Anthony West and Symbolist Egypt Alan and Schoch spend significant time discussing the late John Anthony West, whom Schoch describes as both a close friend and research collaborator. Schoch explains that West was not a conventional academic Egyptologist, but had spent decades studying Egypt, astrology, symbolism, and the work of R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz. Together, they discuss the symbolist view of Egypt, which argues that the ancient Egyptians were not primitive animal worshipers, but encoded sophisticated spiritual, philosophical, and symbolic knowledge in their texts, monuments, and religious imagery. Schoch says West often criticized conventional academics for missing the deeper meaning behind Egyptian symbols. Meeting West and First Seeing the Sphinx Schoch recounts how he first met John Anthony West through a faculty member at Boston University who arranged for West to give a talk and then introduced him to Schoch. West had been looking for an open-minded geologist to evaluate whether the Sphinx showed signs of water weathering. Schoch says he was cautious at first and told West that photographs were not enough; he would need to inspect the site in Egypt. In 1990, West invited him to Egypt for a reconnaissance trip, and Schoch says that within seconds of seeing the Sphinx, he recognized weathering patterns that appeared to be caused by rainfall and runoff rather than Nile flooding. Water Weathering and the Recarved Head A major part of the interview centers on Schoch's geological interpretation of the Sphinx. He argues that the body and enclosure show evidence of water weathering from precipitation, which would push the monument's origins back to a much wetter period before the modern Sahara. He also says he immediately noticed that the Sphinx's head was too small for its body and not weathered in the same way, leading him to conclude that the current head was likely recarved from an earlier, more weathered head. Schoch says he believes the original head may have been a lion or lioness, later reshaped into a dynastic human head when the Sphinx was reused or reappropriated. Egypt, Western Civilization, and Ancient Continuity Alan and Schoch also discuss Egypt's influence on later civilizations. They note that Greek philosophers such as Pythagoras and Plato acknowledged learning from Egyptian traditions, and they connect Egyptian symbolism with later religious and cultural forms, including Judaism and Christianity. Schoch and Alan discuss parallels involving Isis, Horus, Osiris, the ark, the altar, the Virgin Mary, and the Christian mass, presenting these connections as part of a larger continuity between Egypt and the foundations of Western civilization. Schoch frames the ancient Egyptian tradition as one that preserved deep symbolic and sacred knowledge, not merely mythology or primitive belief. The End of the Last Ice Age and Solar Catastrophe The conversation then turns to Schoch's theory that a major solar outburst around 9700 BC helped end the last Ice Age and devastated an earlier cycle of civilization. Schoch argues that the Sun became highly active, producing solar eruptions, coronal mass ejections, atmospheric disruption, radiation, vitrification, torrential rains, massive flooding, and rapid climate change. He distinguishes this from comet-impact theories, saying he believes the evidence better fits solar activity. In his view, the Sphinx's water weathering, worldwide flood traditions, and the collapse of earlier civilizations may all connect to this solar-driven catastrophe. Atlantis, Zep Tepi, and Gobekli Tepe Schoch links his Sphinx work with broader questions about lost civilization. He discusses Zep Tepi, the Egyptian “first time,” and says that astronomical and geological evidence may point to a period around 10,500 BC. Alan asks about Atlantis, and Schoch explains that he treats Atlantis less as a single geographic puzzle and more as evidence, through Plato, of a sophisticated civilization or cultural memory that existed before the end of the last Ice Age. Near the close, they also discuss Göbekli Tepe in Turkey, which Schoch says provides independent evidence of sophisticated civilization before 9700 BC and helps answer critics who once asked for another early site comparable in significance to the Sphinx. Solar Risk, Technology, and Modern Vulnerability Alan asks whether a similar solar event could happen again, and Schoch says he believes another major solar outburst is not only possible but inevitable over geological time. Schoch warns that modern technological civilization is extremely vulnerable to coronal mass ejections, solar flares, and electromagnetic effects that could disrupt electrical grids, communication systems, electronics, satellites, cars, pipelines, and nuclear power facilities. He compares the potential danger to the Carrington Event of 1859, which damaged telegraph systems, and says today's dependence on electronics makes modern society far more vulnerable than earlier cultures. Preparing Philosophically, Spiritually, and Practically Schoch says that although governments may be aware of solar risks, ordinary people face difficult practical questions because modern infrastructure is not easily protected. He suggests that going underground or shielding systems beneath rock could help preserve some technology, but acknowledges that society cannot simply move underground. He and Alan discuss the need for communities to think ahead, prepare mentally and spiritually, and consider both practical resilience and philosophical readiness. Schoch says ancient Egypt's concept of sacred science may be important here because it joins science and spirituality rather than separating them. Closing with Ancient Knowledge and Future Questions Toward the end, Alan describes Schoch's work as a bridge between alternative culture and academic research. Schoch says studying the past is not only interesting for its own sake, but may reveal knowledge, warnings, technologies, and spiritual insights left by earlier civilizations. He points again to the Great Pyramid, the Sphinx Temple, and Göbekli Tepe as evidence that ancient people may have possessed both spiritual and technological sophistication beyond what mainstream timelines usually allow. On September 1st of 1859, Richard Carrington was studying the Sun, as he did every day. The British astronomer used a small telescope to project an image of the Sun on a screen. That allowed him to map the dark features known as sunspots. But on this day, Carrington saw something he’d never seen before. Bright features mingled with the sunspots. They were the first solar flares ever recorded – and still the most powerful. So the outburst is called the Carrington Event in his honor. Carrington also linked the flares to brilliant auroras seen across the globe the following day – the first observations of space weather. Carrington was born 200 years ago today, in London. He originally studied theology, but became hooked on astronomy. He joined an observatory, but left after a couple of years. He built his own observatory, in Surrey. Carrington watched the skies both day and night. He compiled star catalogs. And he made the most impressive studies of the Sun to that time, revealing some crucial details about the Sun. For one thing, it rotates faster near its poles than at the equator. For another, during the 11-year sunspot cycle, the spots move from middle latitudes to near the equator. Carrington eventually had to give up his research. When his father died, he had to take over the family brewery. His health failed as well. He died in 1875 – a pioneer at studying the Sun. In 1859, the largest solar storm in recorded history took place. Known as the Carrington Event, it produced a massive geomagnetic disturbance blamed for disrupting the telegraph system. The website Space.com says, “It’s been conjectured that a storm on the scale of the Carrington event, if it happened today, could cause an internet apocalypse.” The ominous word apocalypse intrigues us. It’s the Greek title of the book of Revelation (apokalupsis). But the word doesn’t only mean a catastrophe or the end of the world. As the title Revelation implies, it also refers to an unveiling, a revealing. The book opens, “The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place” (Revelation 1:1). Revelation reveals Jesus as the Lamb of God, a term John uses more than twenty-five times in Revelation to describe Him. The book also reveals Christ as one whose “eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters” (vv. 14-15). When John first saw the Lamb of God, he “fell at his feet as though dead” (v. 17). But this Lamb touched him and said, “Do not be afraid. . . . I am alive for ever and ever!” (v. 18). Rather than fearing any apocalypse, we can embrace Revelation for showing us the glorified, resurrected Christ. He’s the one we worship.

What if the most important warning in human history was written 3,600 years ago, buried in a text that most scholars refuse to examine, and is pointing directly at our lifetime? The Egyptians called it "The Destroyer." The Celts called it "The Frightener." The Sumerians called it Nibiru. The Book of Revelation calls it Wormwood. The Hopi called it the Blue Kachina. Tonight's guest says they are all describing the same object, and it is coming back. In 1983, I was in high school, and my science teacher read the news to our class that NASA had just identified a new planet in our solar system. The only thing left to do was name it. Years later, in my one and final interview with Zecharia Sitchin before his death, I told him that story. His response stopped me cold. He said, the question is not what they will name it. The question is, what would the consequences be if the information were made public. That question has haunted me ever since. And tonight, we may finally have the answer. On December 26, 2012, five days after the world laughed off the Mayan calendar date, Marshall Masters was watching a live volcanic webcam in Costa Rica, and he saw something that changed the course of his life. He spent the next decade building an orbital model for what he calls the Nemesis Mini-constellation system, a brown dwarf star he believes is our Sun's binary twin, orbiting on a 3,600-year cycle, and closing in on Earth right now. His most recent book contains a prophecy timeline from 2024 through 2037. A pole shift around 2030. A five-event sequence that includes a deep impact in the Atlantic, days of darkness, a reversal of the Earth's rotation, and solar events that make the 1859 Carrington Event look like a flicker. Dr. Paul LaViolette has argued that the Carrington Event was not a simple coronal mass ejection but the result of a galactic superwave. The first solar flare ever observed was also by far the biggest yet seen. But such a monster storm will happen again. And when it does, it’s unlikely that even a single spacecraft in Earth orbit will come out unscathed. And many could be destroyed. The benchmark storm so far was the Carrington Event. It was observed by British astronomer Richard Carrington, in 1859. He saw a brilliant flash of light erupt from a dark sunspot. The eruption produced beautiful displays of the northern and southern lights. It also zapped telegraph wires, disrupting transmissions and even starting fires in some stations. Scientists at the European Space Agency recently simulated what would happen to satellites if such a monster storm hit us today. They concluded that it would be bad – really bad. Over a period of about a day, GPS systems would fail. Satellite instruments would glitch or fail, entire satellites would be destroyed, and some ground stations would be knocked out. Earth’s outer atmosphere would expand dramatically, dragging satellites down. That would increase the risk of collisions, and reduce the time in orbit for any survivors. Operators can take some actions to protect their satellites. But that requires good forecasts of space weather. And future satellites could be equipped with better shielding. Even with those precautions, though, no satellite would be unaffected by the fury of a monster storm on the Sun. Script by Damond Benningfield

I was having a hard time deciding what to leave out for the LP, though, and I suggested making a 3-sided one, and selling it for the price of a regular album. Much to my surprise, the record company said yes. So rather than a side missing, you got an extra side. Critics, of course, hadn't had to pay for it."   And as long as I'm mentioning John Brown below, I'll note my personal belief that he saw the Carrington Event  (really, he couldn't have misssed it) but also that he may have seen the red sky as a good omen for the raid on Harper's Ferry.  In any case, Forty Years was recorded 40 years ago, in January 1986. That turned out to be a notable year, in particular with the Chernobyl nuclear incident which was one of the turning points that led to the end of the Soviet Union. We see the sun every day as it rises and sets... it's one of the few constants in life. But it's a very dynamic body, throwing minor temper tantrums regularly. As it happens, we're at the peak of its 11-year cycle of activity and there's a lot going on! Dr. Alex Young, the Associate Director for Science in the Heliophysics Science Division at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, joins us to talk about the sun, solar activity cycles, the recent solar storms that have given us auroras and some communications blackouts, the science from the Parker solar probe, and much more. Don't take the friendly Mr. Sun for granted--join us for this fascinating episode! Headlines: NASA's accidental broadcast: A simulated medical emergency on the International Space Station was mistakenly aired for 8 minutes, causing brief panic before clarification. Spacewalk canceled: Just before a planned spacewalk, NASA canceled the event citing spacesuit discomfort, with few details provided. Voyager 1 update: The spacecraft is now sending back data from all four of its working instruments, a remarkable feat for the 47-year-old probe. Remembering Bill Anders: The Apollo 8 astronaut, known for the iconic Earthrise photo, passed away at 90 after a private plane crash. Main Topic - Our Friendly Mr. Sun: Heliophysics defined: Dr. Young explains that heliophysics studies the sun's atmosphere and its interactions with Earth and the solar system. Solar activity cycle: Currently near solar maximum, the sun is exhibiting increased sunspots, solar flares, and coronal mass ejections. Space weather impacts: Solar activity can affect technology, causing communication disruptions, satellite damage, and even power grid outages. Solar observation: A variety of spacecraft monitor the sun, including NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory and NOAA's GOES satellites. Parker Solar Probe: This groundbreaking mission is providing unprecedented data about the sun's corona and solar wind. Solar magnetic field: The sun's magnetic field flips every ~11 years, which can lead to increased solar activity during the transition. Carrington Event: This 1859 solar storm remains the benchmark for extreme space weather, causing telegraph systems to catch fire. Scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration observed a cluster of sunspots on the surface of the sun this week. With them came solar flares that kicked off a severe geomagnetic storm. That storm is expected to last throughout the weekend as at least five coronal mass ejections — chunks of the sun — are flung out into space, towards Earth! NOAA uses a five point scale to rate these storms, and this weekend's storm is a G4. It's expected to produce auroras as far south as Alabama.
