Geomagnetic solar storm
POPULARITY
The first solar flare ever observed was also by far the biggest yet seen. But such a monster storm will happen again. And when it does, it’s unlikely that even a single spacecraft in Earth orbit will come out unscathed. And many could be destroyed. The benchmark storm so far was the Carrington Event. It was observed by British astronomer Richard Carrington, in 1859. He saw a brilliant flash of light erupt from a dark sunspot. The eruption produced beautiful displays of the northern and southern lights. It also zapped telegraph wires, disrupting transmissions and even starting fires in some stations. Scientists at the European Space Agency recently simulated what would happen to satellites if such a monster storm hit us today. They concluded that it would be bad – really bad. Over a period of about a day, GPS systems would fail. Satellite instruments would glitch or fail, entire satellites would be destroyed, and some ground stations would be knocked out. Earth’s outer atmosphere would expand dramatically, dragging satellites down. That would increase the risk of collisions, and reduce the time in orbit for any survivors. Operators can take some actions to protect their satellites. But that requires good forecasts of space weather. And future satellites could be equipped with better shielding. Even with those precautions, though, no satellite would be unaffected by the fury of a monster storm on the Sun. Script by Damond Benningfield

Redoing this one because it's the forty year anniversary of the recording of the song Forty Years. A quick note from Joe Jackson's website - where, incidentally, you can't listen to his music any more. (You could when I first published this podcast episode, and I wanted to include the notes that were here before, but that particular one isn't true any more. Or at least, not right now.) http://joejackson.com/release?page=release&album_id=36852 "I want to clear up two myths about this record which still crop up all the time. Myth 1: During the live recording of the album, the audience was forbidden to applaud. Fact: There was plenty of applause. We were just playing a lot of unfamiliar material, and recording it for an album, so the audience were asked to hold it until they were sure a song was finished. They understood this and there was no problem. Myth 2: It's a double album with a side missing. Fact: This was my first album to be released on CD, where the running time was not an issue. I was having a hard time deciding what to leave out for the LP, though, and I suggested making a 3-sided one, and selling it for the price of a regular album. Much to my surprise, the record company said yes. So rather than a side missing, you got an extra side. Critics, of course, hadn't had to pay for it." And as long as I'm mentioning John Brown below, I'll note my personal belief that he saw the Carrington Event (really, he couldn't have misssed it) but also that he may have seen the red sky as a good omen for the raid on Harper's Ferry. In any case, Forty Years was recorded 40 years ago, in January 1986. That turned out to be a notable year, in particular with the Chernobyl nuclear incident which was one of the turning points that led to the end of the Soviet Union. The song mentions Berlin, D.C., and "where I come from" (England/United Kingdom), but not Moscow. The Soviet Union would be gone 7 years after the song was recorded. -------------- Starting from a 1986 song about how attitudes had changed in the time since World War II, a look at the passage of time, and how it affects the way people think about history. You can listen to Big World on Joe Jackson's site - "Forty Years" is track 9: http://joejackson.com/music&album_id=36852 Information about the album, including recording date (January 1986) and release date (March 1986) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_World https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_v._John_Brown Charlestown, Va. 2nd December, 1859. Our planet's magnetic shield is deteriorating rapidly, creating a dangerous vulnerability to solar storms of unprecedented power. Throughout history, events like the 1921 New York Railroad incident and the 1859 Carrington Event wreaked havoc on early technology. Cultures across continents left warnings through winter solstice rituals and megalithic structures designed not for worship but as sophisticated energy channeling systems during cosmic upheavals. Their stone warnings remain while our understanding fades. Military documents like CONPLAN 8888 reveal government preparations for phenomena beyond power outages. The magnetic north pole races toward Siberia at increasing speed, while the South Atlantic Anomaly grows larger each year. The approaching plasma event threatens to do more than disable our technology—it will transform reality in ways our ancestors deeply feared.

The election is Tuesday, so now is as good a time as ever to contemplate the slow unraveling of American democracy. Will this be a fair election? Will Congress certify the election results? Could a solar storm a la The Carrington Event take us back to a world without electricity or internet before the results are in? Tune in and find out!
A powerful solar flare recently occurred, but fortunately, it did not have a significant impact on Earth. However, it serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of solar flares and their effects on our planet. The solar flare was classified as a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) and was traveling at three times the normal CME speed. This increased speed meant that the flare had the potential to cause significant disruptions to Earth's magnetic field and potentially damage electronic systems. The most disruptive solar storm ever recorded was the Carrington Event in 1859. #brightside Credit: Shockwaves on The Sun: by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, CC BY 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/... https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi... We see the sun every day as it rises and sets... it's one of the few constants in life. But it's a very dynamic body, throwing minor temper tantrums regularly. As it happens, we're at the peak of its 11-year cycle of activity and there's a lot going on! Dr. Alex Young, the Associate Director for Science in the Heliophysics Science Division at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, joins us to talk about the sun, solar activity cycles, the recent solar storms that have given us auroras and some communications blackouts, the science from the Parker solar probe, and much more. Don't take the friendly Mr. Sun for granted--join us for this fascinating episode! Headlines: NASA's accidental broadcast: A simulated medical emergency on the International Space Station was mistakenly aired for 8 minutes, causing brief panic before clarification. Spacewalk canceled: Just before a planned spacewalk, NASA canceled the event citing spacesuit discomfort, with few details provided. Voyager 1 update: The spacecraft is now sending back data from all four of its working instruments, a remarkable feat for the 47-year-old probe. Remembering Bill Anders: The Apollo 8 astronaut, known for the iconic Earthrise photo, passed away at 90 after a private plane crash. Main Topic - Our Friendly Mr. Sun: Heliophysics defined: Dr. Young explains that heliophysics studies the sun's atmosphere and its interactions with Earth and the solar system. Scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration observed a cluster of sunspots on the surface of the sun this week. With them came solar flares that kicked off a severe geomagnetic storm. That storm is expected to last throughout the weekend as at least five coronal mass ejections — chunks of the sun — are flung out into space, towards Earth! NOAA uses a five point scale to rate these storms, and this weekend's storm is a G4. It's expected to produce auroras as far south as Alabama. To contextualize this storm, we are looking back at the largest solar storm on record: the Carrington Event. Want us to cover more about the sun?
