Stuart Draper founded Stukent, an innovative ed-tech company that provides simulated internships for business students. Stukent started by focusing on high-quality digital marketing education for colleges and universities using up-to-date digital textbooks and content. They then added a simulation system for students to practice their digital marketing skills. Stukent grew steadily with less than $1M in outside funding, which helped them bridge the long and seasonal buying cycles of big schools. The team grew to over 100 employees and nearly $10 million in revenue serving marketing professors and their students. In 2021, they engaged with Vista Point Advisors, an M&A advisor firm, to shop the company to prospective buyers and investors, eventually getting a majority investment from Tritium Partners. Stuart describes the M&A process, what worked well, and how he transitioned out of the company after two years of continued growth. Podcast Sponsor – Cypress Growth Capital This week's podcast is sponsored by my friends at Cypress Growth Capital. For 15 years, Cypress has provided non-dilutive growth funding to bootstrapped SaaS founders, including many successful founders I've interviewed here on this podcast. Quote from Stuart Draper, founder of Stukent “When we officially sold a major part of our company to investors, we had a brief celebration. My CFO and I called each other and screamed as loud as we could on the phone in a fun moment. We got there, we did this. My family also took a big trip and I got a break. “But then it was back to work. I was still the CEO and I still run this thing and I've got new investors that also need returns. I'm going to go deliver for these guys. They gave me a big payday, so I'm going to make sure they have a win too. “After the second board meeting with our investors, I realized this is way harder than I thought. After eight board meetings and doubling the business again, I wasn't enjoying this as much anymore. The board meetings were hard for me. Prepping for them was super stressful. “So we found a new CEO for Stukent, and he's doing great. Now I get to sit back in my chair at the board meeting, listen in, share my advice and opinions and come back in three months.” Links Stuart Draper on LinkedIn Stukent on LinkedIn Stukent website Tritium Partners website The Practical Founders Podcast Tune into the Practical Founders Podcast for weekly in-depth interviews with founders who have built valuable software companies without big funding. Is AI content causing harm to websites? Let's find out! On today's podcast episode, Jaryd Krause will be joined by Steve Wiideman. Steve will share his winning SEO and content creation strategies. And he will also share his insights about AI content. Specializing in strategic planning for multi-location and franchise brands, Steve Wiideman, of Wiideman Consulting Group, considers himself a scientist and practitioner of local and e-commerce search engine optimization and paid search advertising. He is the author of SEO Strategy & Skills, a college textbook through Stukent. Wiideman has personally played a role in the inbound successes of brands that have included Disney, Linksys, Belkin, Public Storage, Honda, Skechers, Applebee's, IHOP, Dole, and others. Many of the mentioned projects place an emphasis on strategy, planning, and campaign oversight. Jaryd and Steve had a wonderful chat about the following: how most people are using AI the wrong way for their content creation, which is detrimental to their business and how you can create far better content with AI. How do I get free natural links to your website? And why is less content more valuable than volume? They also talked about creating amazing content that will allow you to win links away from your competitors and to your website. How to track your most important pieces of content: what to track and why? Lastly, Steve shares how long he and his team spent on a content brief for one article (this will shock you). He also shares a link to his content brief, which you can find in the show notes. Want to improve your site's ranking? Then, this episode is what you need! Tune in to learn more. While serving as an adjunct professor at UCSD and CSUF, Steve's also building the Academy of Search, while volunteering time to help improve transparency and industry standards as an agency trainer. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Steve Wiideman discuss:Why transparency is important Owning your mistakes Practicing transparency in hiring Focusing more on the value you give Key Takeaways:People won't feel bought into something if they don't know what the something is 100%. Make sure that there's transparency in the organization with your team and with your clients. Whenever you mess up or something doesn't go well, it's important to own it. Be honest, be genuine, and be sincere. You don't have to make such a big show about it, but you have to be vulnerable and admit what you did wrong internally and if necessary, externally as well. A good practice when hiring is to ask the person if they could talk about stories of them working with other people. If they could talk about it, then it's a really good sign. If you still feel uncomfortable, ask for more points of reference. Focus on being the best and having the most value to give, not just on being SEO-noticeable. Because if you are the number one result, but the information you give is basic and bland, eventually, the stats are going to catch up and your true search rank will show. "If you're afraid of your competitors taking your business, then you're not doing as good as them and you need to step up your game. Because in the digital marketing world, especially in SEO, your job is to be number one. Nobody goes to page two of Google. You've got to be so competitive that the competition comes to you." — Steve Wiideman See Dean's TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Steve Wiideman: Website: https://www.wiideman.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/seosteveInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/seosteveFacebook: http://www.facebook.com/wiidemanLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/seoexpert/ Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370 Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine Talla Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. This is the second episode in our Sales and Marketing Series. Steve Wiideman is a scientist, the author of a college textbook called SEO Strategy & Skills, an adjunct professor at UCSD and CSUF, and a practitioner of search optimization; working with companies like Disney, Honda, Skechers, Applebee's, IHOP and many more. The bottom line is if you want to learn about SEO, Steve is THE guy to talk to. When we were putting together this Sales and Marketing series, digital marketing and SEO was at the top of the list, and admittedly it was initially for selfish reasons. It's an area that I've struggled with, especially when building my own company, but I've also been in countless executive meetings and have seen very smart people get lost in a maze of metrics, money and goals. It really seems like it can be a difficult maze to navigate. That's exactly what we're trying to solve for on this episode. Steve breaks down so many important elements and tactics from website building and target audiences to understanding paid vs. organic search. This episode is heavy on strategy and action. On several occasions throughout our conversation he takes difficult to understand concepts and makes them not just easy to understand, but shares what to do and how to do it. He even has an offer at the end of the episode for listeners to get free access to his SEO Strategies course. I think there is still a lot to learn for me.” Note: This interview was recorded before my internship at Stukent ended. I have kind of procrastinated on editing this.
I recently finished up my internship at Stukent. The experience provided a ton of momentum and growth for me and I am anxious as to how to move forward from here. I decided to go on a walk with this as the main question in my mind. I came back with some solid gems of thought to ponder on and learn from. I wanted to share them with you in case these were some messages that could be useful for you too.1. "Don't wish for another timeline." - It is easy to compare our current lives to where we could possibly be if we had just done X or talked to Y. Sure, it is interesting to do so, but we need to make sure we take the energy from that thinking and transfer it into power to help out our current selves. If we do not do this we have, in a way, wasted that thinking power. The main thought with this is that some of the most important decisions of my life I have already made, and I am thankful I am where I'm at now. If I hadn't started a YouTube channel with my friends back in 2012 maybe I wouldn't have gotten into podcasting.... we just don't know. In this timeline I am assured that I am alive and although things are pretty chill, I am still here and I am thankful for that.2. "You just struck gold, why abandon the mine?" - This comes from an Adventures of The Book of Virtues episode. It came to mind completely out of that context, and I have been pondering on it since then. What I have gathered from pondering it is that I have dug SUPER deep in some parts of my life, and then not mined some of the gold that I found. This really is a powerful thought to me that for the networks, opportunities, and things I will do tomorrow I need to make sure I gather as much gold and learning as I can from those mines before they are closed up, and thus become only a memory, not something I am living in anymore.3. "I can plan a process and stick to it." - As I look back at my life the times where I was the happiest were when I was following a process or some kind of map that I had created for myself towards some desired end. Over the last few months I have made some big steps but they have not felt as empowering as I didn't have them in the scheme of a bigger plan for my overall growth. The most powerful thing with this for me is that I already have proof that I can create a plan and stick to it. The trick now is to come up with one that will truly help me here to venture from this moment and so on from here.

1. The 3 AM Comeback With Stukent – Freshman year – First SemesterIn 30 Minutes of intense, focused work I had a vision and an idea I wanted to share with Stukent. NOBODY was going to stop me from sharing that vision.I did all of that from my phone!!I started taking TONS of notesI could see the opportunity SO clearly it was ridiculousThat next day I was able to help with making a PowerPoint and presenting this idea to their VP of Marketing, Trevor Erickson.Their YouTube channel has been picking up some steam and some of my other ideas they said they’d already tried, but I was glad that I went for it. 2. The Race (Poem) – I heard this poem while I was on my mission trip, and it is still one that is very near and dear to my heart. It just goes to http://holyjoe.org/poetry/anon3.htm 3. Daniel and the Lion’s DenAt a young age Daniel was taken by King Nebuchanezzar and brought to serve a king. He was raised from this point to be one of the king’s wise men. All throughout that Daniel’s faith was needed, and he was able to receive a vision for the king. And Daniel’s faith was so strong, and it led him to the Lions’ den. He was delivered because of how Daniel 3:Daniel 3: Daniel was true to himself, and he was able to become a better version of himself. You can stay tuned to see how my comeback is going on my personal Instagram page @DreamChaserDallin Personal Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/dreamchaserdallin/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/yieldtodaywithdallinpodcast/FB - YIELD Today With Dallin Candland
