At varying levels, Walker and Henry have some updates to share on what they have been and will be up to this summer. Walker is in Traverse City for the summer working towards a new path with our friend and coworker Trey Wren, and Henry is continuing to play as much good golf as possible and juggle a number of balls. We are also joined today by Trey Wren to discuss what he has been up to at High Pointe, what he and Walker have coming up in the next few months as well as beyond, and more. Hope you all enjoy this conversation. Thanks for the support as always! Dr. David Hughes brings the word this week from 1 John 5:9-13 about "Summer Life".
Winter in the UK is either mild and damp, or cold and windy - and who would want to be outside as a gardener at this time of year - well Saul and Lucy for one, as this time of year is some of the busiest in all the 12 months. While the garden may be slumbering, Head Gardeners and their teams are beavering away on major jobs, garden renovations, cleaning and tidying the years clutter and making plans for 2024. So join us every week to see what we're up to in the cold months in our work and home gardens. If there was any sign that Lucy was at the opposite ends of the earth then the weather (in true Talking Heads style) would be it. While Saul has put on the extra layers and woolly hat due to winter finally catching up with the UK, Lucy is sunbathing in +25C heat in the Australian summer. But the pair are still enjoying their gardens and plants - as dry weather means pruning is Saul's main focus and the beauty of the Hunters Valley means wine, chocolate and cheese is Lucy's! If you've listened to almost any contemporary preaching, including at Life Church, then the likelihood is you've been influenced to some degree by Timothy Keller. Keller, who passed away last month, had a remarkable ability to communicate, a deep love of Jesus and committed much of his life to making the deepest and most profound truths of the Bible accessible and understandable. One such example of this was in the way he redefined the well-known parable in Luke 15 as a story of a ‘Prodigal God'. Over the next few weeks our Life Groups are going to be working thought Keller's study in Luke 15 and discovering why he recast the parable as that of the Prodigal God.

Today's question is a fun one. What's saving your life right now, specifically when it comes to summer? It could be anything from a favorite product to a spiritual practice, a fun new show, or a meaningful relationship. When it comes to naming what we love this summer, everything counts. And when it comes to decision making, it's fun to name these things. It's great to know what helps me come alive, what makes me smile, what's something I'm loving right now. All of these questions, though they may feel small, inform our next right thing more often than we might realize. Listen in. What's up what's up everyone?! Hope you guys are all doing well and having a nice summer! I definitely know mine's a busy one, but still a fun and developmental one. I was just wondering, what do you think about when summer comes into mind? Is it a time to relax and have fun or grind time for those in school, like high school? There's so much going on even when we get a little break time outside of school or work, but somehow we still need to always stay on top of things and my friend from school, Anika, is joining me in this episode to talk about life as cabinet members, basketball players, just normal teens, and more! We talk about our summer experiences, but of course it doesn't mean it's like that for everyone. Even so, do you resonate with anything we're saying? What do you think about what we have to say? We sure do have a lot to share! :) Btw...remember, these conversations aren't edited! They're meant to just be real and humane just like how life should normally be outside the world of technology! ---- Let's all meet Anika Kasula! She's an incoming junior with a "somewhat active schedule" this summer according to her "standards." From clubs to sports, she's involved in many activities that she has truly come to enjoy. More often than not, however, she finds herself gravitating toward fun and entertainment than work, but overtime, she has learned that overcoming such obstacles and figuring out what is best for one is a journey; it's meant to be a journey. "Sometimes it just takes a bit of trial and error to help you decide the path you want to take!" "You don't have to be in Varsity to enjoy a sport or in cabinet to be the best. You are you and doing what you love is what matters. What summer really is all about is not about what you should do, but what you can do and what you enjoy. If we have the time to live life to the fullest, let's just keep living like there's only one way to go -- up!" - Alyssa Truong ---- And remember, feel free to contact POP through so many ways! Decided to mix it up and drop an episode on Wednesday. It's also my birthday -- so HEY, HEY! A lot of this stuff is still top of mind for me. With everything going on, wanted to spend some time discussing summer sobriety. For some, the summer is like any other season but I know for me, I was hella social in the summer (birthdays, being out, late nights) so when I got sober I had to shift my expectations on how I thought summers should be. First, there are no hard and fast rules. These are some of the things that worked for me but like most things when it comes to recovery -- it's not one size fits all. Being Self Compassionate!Y'all know I love me some Self Compassion and I'm still all the way up in that. I leaned all the way into it because I realized there was SO much that I didn't know. While the thought of that would typically feel me with dread -- last summer, I really just embraced it. Surprisingly, it was freeing! You are new to all of this. You won't have the answer. Some things you won't even think about until you're in the situation. Totally valid. "You don't know, what you don't know."Have a Plan!Planning is not just for trips or work. I know we all want to go out, turn off minds and have fun but if you're navigating early recovery. PLAN THAT SHIT OUT. Some things that I did: brought my own beverages. That way I didn't have to worry about not having something to drink, someone spiking my drink, or accidentally picking up something that had booze in it.Another thing: I had someone come with me OR had someone I could call that knew my deal that I could talk to during or after the event. There's no shame in asking for help -- if you need it. Also, if it gets old for you. You can change your mind and get the hell out at any time. It can happen before you attend, you know you don't want to go. Back out of it. While you're there? If it gets too much, totally fine to get up and leave. You have to do what is best for you. Find New Activities!Yes, I know we are all creatures of habit on some level. We want to feel like we're part of a group and diversifying out of that can fill us with dread. But friends, going outside your comfort zone and trying something new and proposing it to your social circle can be such a huge benefit! Not just to you but even your friends! You may end up really enjoying something that you would have side-eyed before. You may also meet new people at those places and that may be helpful to you too, especially if it's a sober activity. Just know, you will trip up at times. You will get triggered. It's just life but if you have some tools going into most situations, you can learn to navigate. However, it's normal. There isn't something wrong with you, we all go through it. You will learn (and become stronger) each time. It's all about what works for you, your health, your mental state, your recovery. Do what you need in order to feel safe. -----And as always, thank you for listening to my lovely show. If possible, I would love for you to review me on iTunes, Google, Stitcher -- anywhere, really. From the man that brought us ‘Where Did You Go? (Summer Love)’ – we have a brand new anthem for the Summer, called ‘Summer Life’! The man in question, Regi (aka DJ Regi aka Regi Penxten). This past weekend (Saturday, 5 October 2019) on the Coca-Cola Top40SA, Carl Wastie called up the Belgian DJ-producer, who happens to spend quite a bit of time in South Africa, to find out about his new single, which features vocals from Jake Reese & OT. During their chat, Regi revealed just how much he loves South Africa - and the Western Cape in particular; as well as the immense pride he felt the first time he heard ‘Where Did You Go? (Summer Love)’ playing on South African radio, explaining that he was driving through Sea Point, tuned in to Kfm 94.5 and all of a sudden, he heard his single. Carl and Regi also spoke about possible collab opportunities for local vocalists on the Belgian's future projects and by the end of the conversation, it sounded like the two had an appointment for the next time Regi is in South Africa.

Summer rolls along and we have new shows to talk about. Could it be this season is magically devoid of CGI problems? Only time will tell. We try to figure out how cells work. We have DJ tells us why slapstick is bad, Kate tells us why Tokyopop is bad, Kestrel tells us why homophobia is bad, and Cain is indifferent about Evangelion. And tangents... lot’s of tangents. Plus even more news from SDCC.
