Patreon.com/RememberTheGame Everyone around RTG Industries knows I love the NES, and the best games in the NES library are practically royalty around here. That exclusive list includes the Mario trilogy, both Contras, a ton of Mega Man, and of course, the legendary Mike Tyson's Punch-Out... I have been trying to beat this game on and off for almost 35 years and still haven't reached the top of the mountain. For the longest time, Soda Popinski was my kryptonite. I couldn't beat him as a kid, and he just held court over me (is that a term?) every time I went up against him. I've finally slayed that demon, but the illusive Mike Tyson victory still evades me. For now, anyway. But that doesn't matter. Modern tough games make me crazy, but NES tough games are my torture of choice. I don't think I'll ever get tired of playing Punch-Out, and every couple years I fall into its clutches and spend a month or two swearing at little ref Mario. It's practically a perfect game and I'll tell you why on this episode. And before I get knocked out, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks where most of our listeners are located, so I share some stats. Is there a genre of game I discovered later in life and fell in love with? And what 5 Switch games would I recommend to a newcomer? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Patreon.com/RememberTheGame I can't believe it took 261 episodes to talk baseball on this show. I'm hanging my head in shame. But what better way to right that wrong than by talking one of the best ball games of all-time in Ken Griffey Jr Presents Major League Baseball for the SNES?? I couldn't give half a damn about baseball when I was a kid, but I still liked the video games. Black box baseball on the NES was fun, and Extra Innings on the SNES was a good time, but Griffey was always my jam. I loved the home run derby, the simple controls, and thanks to The Simpsons, I even knew who the guy on the box was! My buddy Brad (NBA Jam, Contra) returns to the show this week to talk another sports game. Another GREAT sports game. It's all about hitting dingers this week, fuck yeah! Also at Wheaton High School, Lou and his friends wrote the school newspaper “The War Whoop,” developing a flair for journalism. That led Lou to the University of Minnesota's journalism program. His senior year, Lou won the national William Randolph Hearst championship in San Francisco — establishing his place early-on as a national-level storyteller.Lou spent three years at KELO in Sioux Falls, S.D., reporting on stories such as the state's first execution in 60 years — a year after it was dramatically halted at the 11th hour. As the cops and courts beat reporter, he covered trials such as Daphne Wright's killing and dismembering of a fellow member of the deaf community. Pay attention and you might catch Lou talking about the case on various national cable crime shows. From Sioux Falls, Lou moved to the Sonoran Desert in Tucson, Ariz., along with his wife Emily, also a reporter. In Tucson, Lou helped launch FOX 11 News at Nine, anchoring the newscast for four years. Along the way, he covered the attempted assassination of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, along with many hot-button border issues. After moving to Buffalo, reporting and anchoring weekends for WIVB, Lou continued to compile awards for his work — through New York State Associated Press, NY Broadcasters Association, and NY Emmys. But his finest awards came in 2013, when Lou and Emily welcomed home their little Buffalo baby Violet, and in 2016 when her little brother Westley was born.In 2015 the family moved to Minneapolis where Lou reports at KARE 11, home of the finest storytelling journalism in the country. At KARE 11, Lou has been at the forefront of some of the nation's biggest stories, leading the coverage of the death of George Floyd and the trials for the officers charged with killing him.One particular story that resonated was the kidnapping of 13-year-old Jayme Closs and her subsequent escape after 88 days in captivity. After covering the criminal case that followed, Lou produced an eight-episode podcast, “88 Days: The Jayme Closs Story,” which peaked in the top 10 on the iTunes Charts. In Feb. 2023, Lou's first true crime book was published by Post Hill Press. “Vanished in Vermillion” flips the script on the genre and reveals all the ways the 40-year search for two missing teenage girls went horribly wrong. While free time is harder to come by with a little one in the house, Lou still enjoys playing Tecmo Super Bowl on NES, competing in fantasy football leagues (including one since 1999), watching NFL football, and archiving home movies and photos from the good old days. Sports games are weird, because "old" sports games, like NHL '13 or Madden '14, are completely worthless today. But "older" sports games, like NHL '94, NBA Jam, and Tecmo Bowl, are timeless. Absolutely timeless. In twenty years, nobody will be playing this year's Madden game, but people will STILL be hosting Tecmo Bowl tournaments. THAT'S how good this damned game is. I didn't play a lot of sports games as a kid, aside from hockey and wrestling, but I'm slowly making up for lost time in my old age. Tecmo Bowl happened to find it's way to the top of the list, and holy hell, I get it now. I get all of it. The tournaments. "No Bo". Why people still play these games over Madden. It's just, immaculate. So simple to learn, so fun to play. I'm mad at myself for not playing it sooner. My buddy Brad DID play Tecmo Bowl as a kid, and we almost got through an entire episode without arguing with each other, because we both just agree that this game slaps, and it should have gotten an episode of RTG a long time ago. It's time to right that wrong. And before we Bowl some Tecmo, I serve up another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, I lay out my stance on reproduction cartridges of retro games. What do I think of the situation with Vince McMahon right now? And do I have any interest in attending E3 in person anymore? The year was 1990 and I, 8 year old Phil Ranta, was going through my regular Friday night routine at Blockbuster of renting a Nintendo game that I could play non-stop until school on Monday, or at least as much as possible before my brother booted me off of the system so he could play Tecmo Super Bowl. Now when you're 8, decision-making tactics are a bit different. I knew I liked Mega Man. I knew Mega Man games had a frame around the box with a red Capcom logo at the top. So when I saw a box with the same logo, I assumed it had to be decent. That game: Yo! Noid, the game based on Domino Pizza's mascot. It was….fine. I probably went out and played with the neighbor kids. Sadly. But Domino's knew what they were doing. Kids were playing Nintendo all day every day. Kids eat a lot of pizza. Get them to play a branded game and maybe they'll spend more time telling their parents to order Domino's despite the Ninja Turtles Pizza Hut relationship. And now we have the metaverse, where the promise is the dynamism and real-time interaction of social media with the stickiness of gaming. So much like Domino's in 1990, the brands want to stay in front of this trend. We've seen Taco Bell drop an NFT collection, we've seen Nike sell virtual shoes, and Samsung building stores in Decentraland. I wanted to figure out how you even start to talk to a brand about this. Is it all about the press? Do they goal against it like other digital marketing? And who actually builds this stuff? Our guest Christopher Neff, that's who. As the VP of Creative Technology and Innovation at the community, he guided Samsung 837X, a Decentraland experience with games, NFTs, and a lot of buzz. Avoid the Noid, but don't miss this conversation.FOR MORE INFO:Host Twitter: https://twitter.com/philrantaShow Twitter: https://twitter.com/NFTStoriesPodYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwuexPh0bx-6jXQMRv3iq1gCopyright 2022 - We Are Verified, LLC

Chalk's very own "gambling guru," Chad Ford, is back with lots of thoughts on JJ Watt signing with the AZ Cardinals, the LV Knights' short-lived marketing partnership with a sports picks service, and Bedlam basketball! The guys also look ahead to UFC 259 this weekend and the mega-card for that big PPV! But the main topic of this pod is the NBA, and in particular, the All-Star weekend in what will certainly be a "different" format given the circumstances. The guys talk NBA standings at the proverbial "halfway point", and the guys draft their own fantasy squads from the All-Star lineup for this weekend! All that, plus some "memory lane" references to Chad's big victory in the Tecmo Super Bowl world championships a few years ago!!!

This was definitely one of the more fun episode to date. First, Josh Holcomb, trombone extraordinaire of the red hot band, Lucky Chops joins us to discuss his career in music, the band's recent success, educating music students, and playing music in subways and on street corners. If you have not checked out Lucky Chops, you should definitely commence googling immediately. Check out Josh and co at www.luckychops.com Later, a man by the name of Dave Murray, hops on the show to discuss the creation of the largest and longest Tecmo Super Bowl championships, Tecmo Madison. Dave was a really fun interview. If you loved Tecmo Super Bowl as a kid, or even now, this is a must listen. Visit www.tecmomadison.com to get an idea of what goes into such a tournament. We also talk about Burlew's trip toa Cape May ghost tour, moral dilemas, Scott ripping his pants at a wedding, and welcome out newest sponsor, Sleepovation. Such a fun episode. History of Awesome is an epic 38-part trip down memory lane - each episode we're covering a new year's most important, influential, or just-plain-awesome movies, games, TV shows, comics, and more. Up next is 1991. The Super Nintendo finally made its U.S. debut with Super Mario World, but Sega hit back with Sonic the Hedgehog. Meanwhile, movies like Beauty and the Beast, The Silence of the Lambs, and Terminator 2 offered very high quality (albeit very different) moviegoing experiences. Other discussion topics include Street Fighter II, Tecmo Super Bowl, and Final Fantasy II.
On an all-new The Mad Cap Hour, the whole gang returns from their cross-country Thanksgiving adventures: John and Jamie recap the pros and cons of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, while Mark recounts his daring showdown with a rhinoceros. Tweets abound as the topic of Greatest Video Game Ever is introduced, and the crew discusses the merits of Madden 2013, Tecmo Super Bowl, and anything at which Jamie can claim victory. Dumb crook news, confused New York cabbies, and Mike Tyson's Punch-Out...it's the perfect remedy for your triptophane hangover: The Mad Cap Hour, watch it only on the Toad Hop network!
