This week, Brad Garoon and Jake Ziegler team up with Mike Noyes and Charlie Peterson from the 'Random Acts of Cinema' podcast for a deep dive into the cinematic world of 1979. And opinions are SPLIT. Brad's choice the group is Albert Brooks' directorial debut "Real Life," an under-the-radar satire that presciently critiques the rise of reality television. On the flip side, Jake recommends "Moonraker," a James Bond adventure that takes the franchise to outer space, a place some wish it would have stayed. Luckily, Charlie is a Bond maniac and has plenty to say in the movie's defense. Listen to Random Acts of Cinema. Other movies discussed in this episode: Live and Let Die (1973), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), Stalker (1979), Alien (1979), Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Rust Never Sleeps (1979), Phantasm (1979), Star Trek: The Motion Pictures (1979), Zombie Flesh Eaters (1979), The Castle of Cogliostro (1979), The Brood (1979), Vengeance Is Mine (1979), My Brilliant Career (1979), The Jerk (1979), Dracula (1979), Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), Apocalypse Now (1979), The Muppet Movie (1979), The Black Hole (1979), Saint Jack (1979), Going in Style (1979), Rocky II (1979), The Warriors (1979), Never Say Never Again (1983), Octopussy (1983), Lost in America (1985), Broadcast News (1987), Defending Your Life (1991), Eat Drink Man Woman (1994), Die Another Day (2002), Big Fan (2009), Going in Style (2017), Annihilation (2018), Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken (2023), Albert Brooks: Defending My Life (2023).
In this episode of DreamMachine, Arun and Patricia discuss about the 2023 DreamWorks animated film Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. Ruby Gillman is a 16 year old teenager who is trying to fit in at her high school, but is restricted by her mother whenever she goes to activities involving with water. One day when trying to ask her crush to the prom, he is knocked into the water. Ruby rescues, but realizes that she's a kraken. Chelsea, the most popular girl at the school, is a mermaid and befriends Ruby since they're outcasts who hide their true identity. Ruby learns more about her lineage and Chelsea convinces Ruby to locate a trident so the long battle between mermaids and krakens would end for good. When the film premiered in theaters, it was a box office bomb making $46 million dollars out of a $70 million dollar budget. Critics and viewers hated it calling it a mediocre film that gave away too much on its trailer and a genuine disappointment after DreamWorks made a massive comeback with The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish a year prior. What did Arun and Patricia think of the film? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/old-school-lane/support

With Empire in administration, closing half their cinemas, James Cameron-Wilson finds it hard to be positive. Pixar's Elemental at #1 is a forced morality tale while Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is creaky and overlong. Insidious: The Red Door at #5 is merely blah while Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken at #8 is devoid of wit or flair. James is only enthusiastic about The Flash at #10. Learn more about your ad choices. To celebrate the season 3 finale, I'm joined by Grammy winning composer Steph Economou! Steph's latest score is for the Dreamworks animated film Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. As such, we primarily talk about Steph's score, including her choice to approach the score with a "cinematic dream pop" palette, implementing unique instruments like conch shells and the Bohemian Cristal Instrument, and the daunting nature of this being her first feature animated project. Of course, we also talk about her Grammy win, taking home the first ever Grammy for "Best Score Soundtrack For Video Games And Other Interactive Media" for her score to Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarök, as well as the challenge and excitement of scoring for videogames broadly (among many other things). I found Steph's score to be really exciting, in no small part because it's so distinct. While the "cinematic dream pop" sound ends up being particularly fitting for the film's underwater/nautical setting, it's an unusual choice for film music broadly, even more so for a family animated film. Those that know me will know by now that moving the sonic needle in media music is something I love to see, but so often it's done in indie films or in horror; for this to happen in a bigger-budget, mainstream film is great! Hopefully it's a trend that can continue. Steph mentions that the filmmakers gave her a lot of leeway right of the bat when it came to the score's palette, and she took full advantage of it. Even though she felt a bit daunted at first, with this being her first animated feature, she mentioned her two approaches in getting past it: "I just try to write music that I know I'll be proud of later” and “you just gotta put your head down and do it; but the fear makes you better.” Things we can all live by. You can find out more about Steph on her website. Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is currently in theaters and Steph's score, as well as many of her other scores, is available digitally on all major platforms.

MINISODE: Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken (2023) PLOT TWIST! Benevolent sea creature season isn't over just yet. Cullen and Hannah talk about Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, a movie they both thought would be very shallow and not good. Turns out, it's got deep layers of pro-xenophia propaganda, complex multi-generational mother-daughter relationships, and enough surface-level anti-mermaid discourse and Disney deconstruction to turn this minisode into, well, an episode. Check out Camp Oracle, a four-episode, live D&D campaign series Cullen is hosting with Outside In Theatre. It premieres Tuesday, July 18, at 7PM PST/10EST on Twitch at twitch.tv/outsideinthtr. In this episode, I got to chat with Kirk DeMicco and Faryn Pearl, the director and co-director of DreamWorks Animation's latest film, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. As with most films, what we see onscreen is only part of the story. If you look at the math, Kirk's last directorial project was Vivo, released around 2 years ago, which means Ruby was a sprint from when he came aboard - pun intended. This film is refreshing in that it's focussed on a young female protagonist, and the entire thread of the story focusses on 3 generations of women - well, kraken women. The production design on this project was just beautiful. I understand the focus and fawning over experimental looks in recent films, DreamWorks films included, but design and shapes take centre stage here for a really cool look that I enjoyed. Combine that with awesome bioluminescence and you've got a beautiful looking film. Ruby is Faryn first co-director role, and Thoroughly enjoyed chatting with her and Kirk and hope you enjoy it!- - Please like, rate, and comment on your favorite podcasting platform and share the episode on social media if you enjoy it.If you have any comments or suggestions please get in touch. I wasn't especially familiar with Liza Koshy's work on Vine, YouTube, and other social media platforms the first time I covered one of her feature films, but that certainly changed after our brief chat for her summer 2020 release, Work It. A big ball of infectious energy and positivity, it was immediately clear that Koshy's star was going to continue to soar, and also that she'd be an ideal guest on Collider Ladies Night. Three years later, the time has finally come, and not only did she not disappoint, she far exceeded Ladies Night expectations.Koshy voices Margot in DreamWorks Animation's Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, the human best friend of the title character voiced by Lana Condor. When Ruby discovers she can transform into a gigantic kraken, she does what far too many high school students do with a quality that makes them different; she goes to great lengths to keep it a secret, even from her very understanding and supportive BFFs. However, when the new girl at school, Chelsea (voiced by Annie Murphy), turns out to be an evil mermaid with the power to destroy her hometown, Ruby knows exactly what she needs to do to keep her friends and family safe — fully unleash the kraken. With Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken now playing in theaters nationwide, Koshy joined me for a Ladies Night chat to recap her journey from becoming a Vine powerhouse to a full-blown movie star, amassing a considerable filmography a mere 10 years into her time in Los Angeles.
