In this episode of the podcast, I’m joined by Tim Meuchel. He’s a graduate engineer from Virginia Tech, and spent 12 years in the private sector managing large commercial construction projects from coast-to-coast for a 100-year old company. Tim’s plan from day 1 was to retire with that company until a series of events several years later led him to start considering other options. Tim kept his job but started discussing an exit strategy with his wife and circle of influence. These discussions continued for several more years until eventually he secured a contractor’s license and started a side business in 2007. Keys to being in the moment. Prepare Preparation is important. This is legwork completed before your experience takes place Adapt Nothing goes as planned. Being adaptable helps to combat something unforeseen ruining the moment or your day. Perspective Have a handle on what is important and what is not. What are the deal breakers and what can you let go or do without? Focus Minimizing distractions plays a big role in your ability to focus and keep yourself in the moment. Simplifying helps to avoid living in a constant state of chaos; a constant state of stress. Strategy Days Periodic goal setting gives you the ability to think big picture instead of dealing with detail after detail. When goal setting it's important short-term plans are in alignment with long-term goals. Periodic strategy days help prevent getting hung up on strategy every day. This frees up time to work the plan daily instead of creating the plan daily. This week’s guest is Tim Meuchel. Tim is the creator, bestselling author, and podcast host of The 10 Factor. Like so many successful entrepreneurs that you’ve heard me talk to here on the show, Tim failed his way to success. In 2008, he lost over $300,000 after resigning from a twelve-year corporate management career to pursue his side business full-time. His business grew exponentially, but one bad deal left Tim’s company almost bankrupt. Tapping into emergency funds, he fought back and restructured; resulting in a new profit producing model requiring less than 40% of the effort. Tim then reverse engineered his process, validated it with top entrepreneurs, and created a 10-Month Roadmap – The 10 Factor, that he now uses as the success blueprint to help others engineer their business around their ideal lifestyle, all of this while he gives back extensively to support the fight against Prostate Cancer. Where to Find Tim: Check out his book and podcast via the 10 Factor https://the10factor.com/ (website). On Instagram https://www.instagram.com/timmeuchel/ (@TimMeuchel) Show Notes: [3:00] minute: What was life like for you growing up and what were the beliefs around money and success that were instilled in you as a child? Middle class, tight knit family, very stable. Engineering was first love and work post college. [4:45] minute: Was entrepreneurship always in your mind or did it come about at some point? Watched his Dad lose his job as the number two person at his company. His pivot was to start his own business, and that was one of many seeds planted for Tim that entrepreneurship had its benefits. [7:00] minute: There’s a comfort that comes with managing your own destiny that comes with entrepreneurship would you agree with that? You get to create the lifestyle you want for you and your family, and that is what’s important. [8:30] minute: You leave a 12 year career to pursue your side business, tell me what that was and about the time when you almost lost it? Left because of extended travel that kept him away from his soon-to-be-wife, and because he knew he wanted to make the equivalent of two salaries so his soon-to-be-wife could stay at home for future children’s early life. Once he went full-time with his own contracting company it exploded. The business then started to eb and flow with what he could do on his own. One bad deal left the company nearly bankrupt. This is what led to sit down and create 10 Factor. [14:30] minute: What was your headspace like at this time, were you able to stay positive while you sat down to figure this all out or did you get into any bad places with that? Avoided any dark places because he knew he had already built something really fast and that gave him confidence that he could do it again. Worked backwards to reverse engineer what he needed to be doing to make the exact amount in the exact time he wanted. [16:45] minute: What so often kills businesses is too much opportunity, which is not what you expect going in, and it sounds like that is a large part of what you do now is help entrepreneurs figure out what opportunities are the right ones? Going to one thing and being the best at it, there are enough people that need that one thing that you can be wildly successful doing just that. Having the “right of refusal” and having control of your time. [21:00] minute: What is that first step, how do you in a practical sense get clear on what to be focused on? If your business is still around and profitable, you are closer than you think, just need some fine-tuning. A good coach would have gotten him to where he is so much faster, and now he has a coach year-round. [25:30] minute: There are an abundance of coaches out there, how would you advise someone to evaluate the coaches out there and find the right one for them? Someone will peak your interest, something that makes you want to talk...

Betting on yourself is scary for most entrepreneurs. Like it or not, as human beings we are susceptible to the influence of others. And we don't always trust our own ability to make the right choices. Saying Yes When Everyone is Telling You "No" A self-limiting or scarcity mindset can shipwreck our own growth in life and business. The longer we put ourselves in the box that society has created, the deeper we dig our own hole. Instead of just doing what we know is the best thing for us, the harder it becomes to say "yes" when everyone else is telling us "no". Yet, each generation has a forefront of leaders who challenge the box's envelope. These leaders get outside of the box and help push society to evolve and reach new limits. Are you one of these leaders in this generation? Are you someone who is betting on yourself against all odds? Clarity The reality is many people struggle with clarity even during the good times. So where does that leave you when times aren’t so good? Are you stuck? How do you keep going if you don’t know where you are heading? Imagine just for a minute that clarity is not possible for you… at least not right now. Maybe you are waiting on a test result that could be life changing; like cancer for example. Maybe you are going through a change to your normal; like a marriage separation leading up to a divorce. It’s times like these that you are just trying to get through the day and live in the moment. You have no idea if you’ll be able to travel, commit enough time to work, or in some cases even work at all. Plus during these times your confidence is waining, leaving your mindset in shambles. So, if this is you let me start by saying, you are not alone. And also understand there are times in your life, seasons if you will, when clarity is just not in the cards. And that’s ok. You have to: Keep your faith. Figure out who you are and what you stand for. This you never want to compromise, even during the darkest moments. Knowing who you are and loving yourself is more important than where you are going at this exact moment. Faith helps with this. Understand that you might have to make short term sacrifices for the long term reward or payoff. For example hanging onto your dead end job while you get a new business off the ground. Work life balance is a goal but is not always practical. That said, you should strive to build your business around your desired lifestyle or you have a much lower chance of ever achieving it. The perfect life doesn't exist! So why do so many on social media portray their life as perfect? Why do most rush to post the good stuff and refrain from posting the bad? And why when someone does have the courage to post the bad do the haters have a field day. I'm sure you've seen the hater comments, like... Why are they living their life through social media? Why are they airing their dirty laundry? Nobody wants to see their problems... Unfortunately, the societal peer pressure pushes social media users to appease the masses. If you put that into perspective the result is very cloudy. What is real life if most people only show their storefront on social media, while others are vulnerable and share more? How can we wade through the BS and figure out if our life is good, bad, or somewhere in the middle? Is is ok to compare social media lives with our own lives or could this cause problems? Spoiler alert... I just finished reading Napoleon Hill's book, Think and Grow Rich and the last chapter has five pages of self-analysis questions that he says should take you at least one full day to answer honestly and completely. Dialing through these questions put a lot into perspective. As you can imagine, when you really dig deep we all have issues. Nobody is perfect and everyone has lots of room to improve. So I caution you to enjoy social media but keep your guard up and understand that you probably aren't getting the whole story. Shifting mindset to leverage strengths and delegate weaknesses can be huge for the number of work hours your business requires. What would you give to have more of your time back and make more money? Let's start with a simple warm up series of questions. Are you busy or productive? When you see social media ads do you scroll past them, or do you find yourself constantly opting in? Do you spend your time on results focused tasks? Do you prioritize your days and schedule them to make sure they are 100% congruent with your journey and are helping to expedite reaching your goals? Have you ever watched a training multiple times? Have you read a book again? Have you watched a speech over and over? Are you mastering or just becoming a jack of all trades and master of none? Now, here’s some tougher questions... How is your mindset - your confidence and clarity? Do you know exactly where you are heading and do you know exactly the steps to get there? Are you following those steps or working randomly? Are you willing to do what it takes to achieve the shiny object so many people dream about but never make reality? Basically, you are testing to see if you are FOCUSED? Because if you are struggling with focus everything else becomes cloudy and less clear. This means you will be wasting valuable time and money which nobody wants to do... So, if you are struggling with focus I’d suggest you start there. Fix the focus and build your strong foundation first then get into everything else. Remember everything begins with focus which is why Focus is the first step in The 10 Factor. Here's a simple process to help take your mindset through a paradigm shift to what really matters to you. This exercise can be huge for your business as you’ve just done some basic deep thinking about where you want to be. Obviously you can go much deeper but this will give you a good jump start. List the ten activities you spend the most time on every week. This might seem like a lot but I bet you are handling a lot more than ten things each week. These might be things like time with clients, drive the kids to school, church, sales calls, clerical paperwork, cutting the grass, exercise. Number the activities from 1 to 10 with 1 being the one you enjoy the most and 10 the least. Rewrite your list in order, starting with 1 and finishing with 10. Your favorite activities will now be at the top of your new list. You’ll come back to this later so don’t throw this one away. Now, put an R next to any activities that drive revenue. Hopefully you’ll be able to put an R next to at least 3 of the 10 activities. Next, create a new list of only revenue driving activities. Number these activities in order from the ones you enjoy the most to the ones you enjoy the least. Rewrite the list in order starting with number 1 so your favorite revenue driving activity is at the top. Now, circle the activity that drives the most revenue. We are working towards where you should be spending your time. If that is the top activity you are ready to roll and should be making plans to double down and scale here. You can follow the steps of The 10 Factor to shed the load and scale. If the circled activity isn’t at the top of your list this is a potential scaling activity too; but you will likely want to lean harder on delegating. You should think about completing systemizing this activity so it’s not branded just to you handling it. Then you should make plans to delegate as soon as you can and free up more time for your favorite activities. It’s important to delegate because if it’s not as enjoyable to you it will be hard to sustain long-term. The next step is laying out your unique roadmap and follow the plan to make it happen. This is all spelled out in The 10 Factor. TUNE IN to the 10 Factor, Episode 75 - Tim Meuchel on Shifting Mindset to Leverage Strengths and Delegate Weaknesses. Cashflow is a critical part of any business. If you are an entrepreneur don't let anyone tell you it isn't. The harsh reality is when your cash starts trending in the wrong direction, your life and business can quickly fall apart. A business with positive cashflow and reserves has choices and when the money stops flowing your choices are limited. So as a business owner, what should you do when your cash on hand starts to dry up? Here’s some actionable steps you can take to get over the hurdle and get back on your feet sooner rather than later. For starters there are some common sense things you can do immediately. Just bear in mind, when you are in the heat of it they don’t always seem so true. Remind yourself you are not a failure. This is a bump in the road. Writing this down and saying it aloud are good ways to make this an intentional, focused exercise. Review where you are spending both time and money on things that don’t matter. Understand that everyone, even the best of the best, struggle with this. Lay out a plan to minimize these things. Tell yourself, you've made money before. You can do it again. Stop looking desperate and continue providing value. It’s amazing how many stories I hear about someone providing service and value in desperate times. Their service first efforts have lead to windfalls of money very quickly. The problem is most people quit before the windfall happens; or start looking desperate, which actually pushes the buyers away. Remind yourself that your family wants you. Yes, they might be disappointed to make short-term sacrifices but they want you. Money gives choices but it doesn’t guarantee happiness. That’s why some people are rich with lots and money and others are wealthy with a lot less money. Let that sink in for a minute. What can you do (legally) to generate some quick income? You might have to do something in the short-term that you don’t like doing to make money for the long term; just don't throw the towel in for your ultimate goals. Spending money on your personal development might seem like the worst thing to do in desperate times but it has proven time and time again to springboard huge successes. I talked about identifying possible financial redundancies in my book. Like it or not you might have to tap them at some point. That doesn’t mean you are a failure. Know going in you might have to go deeper in debt to get out of the hole. Do the math. If you get a job will you ever get your head above water. Remember living week-to-week doesn’t pay off old debts. If you are ready to take back control here’s the first 3 steps to focusing and getting your head above water. Understand your goals. Think about not just what you want, but why you want it and what it will take to get what you want. This is the beginning of Focus and changing your mindset to fit your goals. You need to position yourself to leverage your expertise for profit. Most people think this is spending more money and working more but it is actually slowing down and working less. Consistent result focused activity over time will make a huge impact in your life and business. Develop a realistic plan to take control of every minute of every day, prioritizing and time blocking everything. Tim Meuchel (pronounced ‘MY-kel’) is the creator, bestselling author, and podcast host of The 10 Factor. Using his ten-month Success Blueprint, Tim helps consultants and entrepreneurs create a thriving business built around their ideal lifestyle. Like many successful entrepreneurs, Tim failed his way to success. He lost $334,200 in 2008 after resigning from a twelve-year corporate management career to pursue his side business full-time. The business quickly grew 8X and within four months Tim’s wife quit her job as well. Ten years later she remains a Stay-at-Home Mom. Several years after its exponential growth a bad business deal left Tim’s company almost bankrupt. Tapping into emergency funds, he fought back and restructured the business; resulting in a new profit producing model requiring less than 40% effort. Seeing an opportunity to give back and help other struggling entrepreneurs Tim reverse engineered his process, validated it with top entrepreneurs, and created a ten-month roadmap – The 10 Factor. “This is reality. This is what life is like as an entrepreneur. Some days you are going to want to quit. Some months you are going to struggle to pay the bills. The phone is not always going to ring like it’s supposed to. Life happens. Business happens. And every seven or so years you are going to go through a major financial adversity. Everybody that I talk to; it hits in some capacity and it’s always at the worst time. And every seven years. Guess what? You are also going to go through a personal adversity. Maybe it’s a sickness. Maybe it’s a death. It could be something you didn’t know about your family that was uncovered. Maybe it’s just the part of life, the chapter that you are living at this moment in time. You know, when the finances and the personal adversities; when they start going 100 mph. You know what? It’s not easy. It’s not easy in the good times so when the bad times come… I’m just telling you this is what it’s like, so… There are things you can do to prepare yourself and to prepare your business for it. Not the if, the when, but it still doesn’t make it easy. Now, some seven year cycles might be a little better and some might be a little worse. On this episode, we sit down with entrepreneur and best-selling author Tim Meuchel. Tim shares his story of struggle and success while creating space for his priorities (his family) and offers a model to help design a business that is sustainable for your vision and life.
Tim Meuchel is the creator, author, and podcast host of The 10 Factor. The business quickly grew 8X and within four months Tim's wife quit her job as well. Ten years later she remains a Stay-at-Home Mom. Several years after its exponential growth a bad business deal left Tim's company almost bankrupt.
