While Truth Fairy is away, Dr. T hosts this episode solo, welcoming Scott Hill, author of “Confrontation with the Unconscious: Jungian Depth Psychology and Psychedelic Experience”, who completed his PhD with a dissertation titled ‘Building a Jungian Framework for Understanding Psychedelic Induced Psychotic States' at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Dr. Hill shares his early transformative encounters with LSD in 1967, which, though initially ecstatic, devolved into psychologically traumatic events. These experiences led him on a lifelong journey of self-exploration, academic inquiry, and healing.  Scott shares his journey very openly with Dr. T and they discuss how Scott's return to academia in Cailfornia, studying under Stan Grof and Ralph Metzner, deepened his understanding of his own experiences. They examine how Jung's concepts of the collective unconscious and archetypes reflect in intense psychedelic states. Scott details how key reading, Holotropic Breathwork, a medicine circle. and an MDMA-assisted therapy session at Burning Man, and MDMA-assisted therapy all helped heal his ongoing flashbacks.  Dr. T and Scott Hill share a deep and revelatory conversation, at the end of which Scott expresses gratitude for the path he was forced onto in spite of how painfully it began. He describes writing and academic research as transformative tools and identifies scholarship as a spiritual practice in its own right. “Confrontation with the Unconscious: Jungian Depth Psychology and Psychedelic Experience”, Dr. Hill's book, is now foundational in psychedelic psychotherapy circles, and his insights are key to understanding much about psychedelic psychology. “As I read about the myths of Gilgamesh, Inanna,, Job and Christ, I was struck by the resonance between passages in those myths and my difficult psychedelic experiences. Given the Jungian view that myths are expressions of the archetypal unconscious, and given the resonance I experienced reading those myths, I started to wonder whether my terrifying trips, and perhaps those of others, might be understood, in Jung's words, as experiences of an archetypal nature.” - Scott Hill About Scott Hill:Scott J. Hill, Ph.D., lives in Sweden, where he conducts scholarly research on the intersection between psychedelic studies and Jungian psychology. Tim Read is a doctor who has lived in Brunswick since the early 1990s. A passionate climate change activist, Tim was elected as the state MP for Brunswick in 2018 and became the first Greens MP for the electorate. Tim is a little outside of the artist, designer and entrepreneur guests we usually have on the show. However, we felt that policy design and the high-level implementation of design ideas through state parliament was an interesting process to unpack and discuss on the show. In this conversation we covered the process for policy ideas to become law and legislation, the power of public health to drive change in other sectors such as energy policy, welfare/homelessness, social housing and transport and what Tim's day to day life is like when working as a state MP.

We talk about the difference between spiritual crisis and psychosis; how modern psychiatry is broken; and why psychiatrists should undergo psychedelic therapy. Additionally, we explore the difference between being in process and processing; how our triggers are an opportunity to step into our healing journey; the role of relationships in our healing; how to help shift culture and community to better support people in crisis; how to support people in psychotic delusion (without colluding in their delusions); and the point at which we should involve psychiatric intervention. Content Warning: Trauma, fear, physical pain memoriesDr. T and The Truth Fairy discuss a book by Tim Read and Maria Papaspyrou called “Psychedelics and Psychotherapy: The Healing Potential of Expanded States”, and really dig into two chapters in particular. One of these chapters involves the topic of therapists and substance use in underground psychedelic work: should the therapist take medicine with the client, and if so how much and when? They address chapter four of the book which involves the excluded and repressed unconscious and how integration, through therapy and medicine, can assist when the unconscious is carrying an immensity of experiences. The Truth Fairy shares insightful stories from her practice and Dr. T refers to what Jung called ‘the transcendent function'. This is a thoughtful and informative episode exploring a very wonderful book.“I think that it really, as therapists doing psychedelic assisted therapy, I know that there, I'm sure there's some clinical situations where it's an absolute no-no for therapists to do the medicine, a booster dose. And I do think it has its rightful place. But if you're in a period that you're very sensitized, and there's a lot coming up for you, or you've done a lot of your own medicine work recently, and you are quite open and raw, and you're still integrating yourself, I think those are the times to be wise and perhaps hold off and not do any.” - The Truth FairyResources mentioned in this episode:“Psychedelics and Psychotherapy: The Healing Potential of Expanded States” by Tim Read and Maria PapaspyrouMDMA5MEO-DMT4-AcO-DMT3-MMCKetamineJung: the ‘transcendent function'---Punk Therapy: website |email

This talk was given at the Rebel Wisdom Festival in late May 2020.   A spiritual emergency is a period of intense and extended disturbance to a person’s ordinary sense of self and reality, which can involve psychotic-like symptoms such as mania, ego-dissolution, a heightened sense of meaning, hallucinations and a confusion of inner and outer worlds.   These experiences can be treated as symptoms of chronic brain disorders requiring psychotropic medication. However, they are better understood as attempts by the psyche to seek greater wholeness. If properly handled, they can be transitions to greater maturity, flourishing and wisdom.   Jules Evans is a philosopher and author, his most recent book is 'Breaking Open: Finding a Way Through Spiritual Emergency', with psychiatrist Tim Read: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Breaking-Ope...   Jules Evans' website: https://www.philosophyforlife.org/

Jules Evans appeared on the podcast last time to discuss his two previous books: Philosophy For Life And Other Dangerous Situations and The Art of Losing Control. In that episode, we talked at length about the benefits of Stoicism, and also where reason-based philosophical frameworks might be lacking if one wishes to experience a rich, integrated human life. We dove into topics like meditation, eastern philosophy, and psychedelics as useful additions in our psychological toolkit. When I asked Jules what he was working on next, he explained that he was in the process of co-editing a book with psychiatry expert Tim Read all about spiritual emergencies. Considering I am involved in the psychedelic and spirituality space, I was surprised to find that I knew very little about this important topic. 30, years ago Stanislav Grof and his wife Christina wrote a book called Spiritual Emergency where they defined this phenomenon as follows: One of the most important implications... is the realization that many of the conditions, which are currently diagnosed as psychotic and indiscriminately treated by suppressive medication, are actually difficult stages of a radical personality transformation and of spiritual opening. If they are correctly understood and supported, these psychospiritual crises can result in emotional and psychosomatic healing, remarkable psychological transformation, and consciousness evolution. With the resurgence of psychedelics and increased popularity of spiritual practices, information on how one might recognise and navigate their way through a spiritual emergency has never been more important. In this episode of the HighExistence Podcast, Jules and I discuss the book he edited on this topic Breaking Open: Finding Your Way Through a Spiritual Emergency. I have read the book, and I can't express how important I found it. If you are in any way interested in pursuing spiritual transformation, this book book is indispensable.
