This week I talk with my good friends, Cody Vermillion and Ryan Ross. Two faith leaders and entrepreneurs from San Diego CA. We talk about our beliefs around work, family, creativity, our passion for serving humanity, and how we are all made for more. You'll see why I chose them to be a part of this series on Beliefs. And I can reassure you that after knowing them for years, they are the real deal. They “live out” what they believe. No matter what beliefs you hold or where you are in your faith, my hope is you will find a comfortable seat at this table. So, pull up a chair. May you find value and inspiration as we talk about what it means to live more valiantly as we address what limits us and dare to believe in the “more” we each long for. Ryan and Cody are doing something unconventional… quite uncommon, actually. Hence, the name of their work, UNCMN Creative, and their ministry, Uncommon Good. We keep trucking along with our series reconsidering the fundamental pillars and principles of Catholic Social Teaching, the same first run of shows we started with when we began the UnCommon Good on Iowa Catholic Radio 8 years ago. Today we deal with the Dignity of Persons, and how that plays into things like the Imago Dei, Human Rights, and how the primacy of the human person alters how we consider any other social question. We keep rolling along with our Reconsideration of the first series of shows we started with 8 years ago when the UnCommon Good began! Today we explore the Preferential Option for the Poor, hopefully dispel the flat or of base understandings of the concept, and try to shine a light on the brilliance of this distinct principle in the consideration of Catholic Social Principles. Bo Bonner is the Mission Officer at Mercy College of Health Sciences in Des Moines, IA and the Co-host of the UnCommon Good. He recently reposted a brief statement on strengthening the will, which began, "When it comes to the will and the spiritual life, much emphasis is placed on immediately turning away from temptation with a decisive act of will. Indeed, asceticism is rooted in this hope, that saying 'no' to things, even good ones, will make our wills no longer weak but, with the grace of God, able to withstandthe onslaughts of the tempter in every day life. But in some ways in contemporary spirituality discussions this has been hi-jacked..." We talk through his post and explore ideas about avoiding extremes when it comes to forming the will, and land on some practical, achievable ways of growing in holiness.
Geoffrey Bateman, a NetVUE faculty fellow and NetVUE scholar, has written extensively on the topic of supporting our LGBTQIA+ students in their vocational journeys. In our conversation, we explore strategies for mentoring queer students and discuss how to build inclusive practices in vocation work, both in classrooms and across campus. By taking action in local environments, listening for shifts in professional pathways, and honoring all facets of identity, educators can help individuals and communities to flourish. As part of the practice of vocational exploration, “walking the talk” by connecting to community groups and organizations can build resilience and foster relationships with those on the margins, supporting the well-being of all.

Marshmallows are reported to have been invented in Egypt, around 2000 BC. Four millenniums later, Lani Fox - owner of Rosemallow Artisanal, a small batch artisanal confection company - has taken marshmallows to the next level. Opening last year, Lani has been creating exciting, innovative and seasonal desserts using ingredients grown in her own garden and/or selected by Johanna Teissere, Farm Director and Master Gardener at Uncommon Good, from their farm-fresh fruits, vegetables and other produce. Their collaboration has raised marshmallows from their familiar spots in hot cocoa or on graham crackers to being an irresistible new dessert with unusual flavor pairings. If you try some of their best sellers, such as loquat and fennel or lavender and mint; or those emulating cocktails, like grapefruit spritzer or Spicy Chocolate Almond Liqueur, you'll understand why Rosemallow Artisanal's specialties have become so popular, so quickly. Take a few minutes to listen to the genuinely passionate and enthusiastic Lani and Johanna as they recount the creation of the business and their journey to this point. And, when trying some, please let Lani and Johanna know you enjoyed their episode; there's likely a smile and sample in the bargain.=======================================Visit Lani's website for more informationwww.rosemallow.comEmail: rosemallowartisanal@gmail.comor text/call 909-833-3205Stop in to see Johanna Teissere at their Claremont Uncommon Good farm and Earthen Office, located at: 211 W. David Brower | Uncommon Good: Serving Your Church | 1 Corinthians 12:12-31 | The Church has always been more than just a place where we worship and learn; the Church is the people who attend it. When we serve the Church, we're not just filling a role at an organization, we're acting as part of the body of God's people. We will close the series called Uncommon Good with a reminder that the love of God for his people, and the love of God's people to each other is at the heart of service. The post Uncommon Good: Serving Your Church – #SEVERNONLINE appeared first on Severn Covenant Church.
Aaron Mayhew | Uncommon Good: Serving Your Neighbor | Luke 10:25-37 | Jesus gave the world an ideal example of what it means to love and provide service to your neighbor in the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Although we aren't always confronted with obvious examples of when our neighbors are in need of our service, there are things we can do to be vigilant for opportunities to serve in the name of God. The post Uncommon Good: Serving Your Neighbor – #SEVERNONLINE appeared first on Severn Covenant Church.
David Brower | Uncommon Good: Serving at Work | Genesis 1:26 - 2:3 | The topics of work and labor are in the public spotlight right now as issues of fair pay and reasonable expectations of employers and employees alike are debated. It's a good time to remind ourselves of what the Biblical view of work is, and how the faith that Christians have should drive their attitudes and expectations about their jobs. The post Uncommon Good: Serving at Work appeared first on Severn Covenant Church.
Aaron Mayhew | Uncommon Good: The Foundation | Jeremiah 29:1-14 | In the midst of uncertainty, God told the remnant of his people not to give up celebrating the joys of life: Growing good food to eat, falling in love and getting married, making homes and having children. The exile they were experiencing was going to end, and in the midst of it, God did not want them to lose sight of their future renewal. It is tempting to abstain from the things we consider blessings when we perceive that times are hard, but God says that there is hope in continuing in these celebrations. Nancy Mintie, the founder of the Inner City Law Center and Uncommon Good , returns to Claremont Speaks to reveal her lifelong passion for writing poetry about her reflections on social justice and the nature of life and spirituality. In her new, first book "Poems for a World Yet To Be." she shares how her ideas have developed over a lifetime devoted to service and justice, and traces the outline of the world that she hopes to see emerge as people awaken to the beauty and power of what people can create together. To provide a special treat for our listeners, Nancy brought together several of Claremont's most interesting and eloquent women to join her in reading aloud some favorite passages and exploring their origins and meaning. Folk music legend Ellen Harper; former Pilgrim Place board director and Napier Initiative administrator Janet Evans, and popular singer, actress and prolific author Eileen Flaxman delight listeners by bringing Nancy's poems to life with riveting, heartfelt and genuine voicing. Each creates vivid imagery such to be ample cause for re-listening, several times over.In her signature self-less style, the proceeds from the sale of her book will be donated to Uncommon Good, to further assist and provide food for low income communities and the unhoused. Nancy's brilliantly crafted prose creates a lasting impression that stays with one long after the reading is done, and instills an appetite for more. Inarguably one of Claremont Speak's most popular guests, Nancey invites the listeners to enjoy the articulate and engaging readings from "Poems for a World Yet To Be" and then share the podcast and book with their very best friends.------------------------------------------------------------For more about Nancy Mintie:Inner City Law: https://innercitylaw.org/history/Uncommon Good: https://uncommongood.org/To visit Uncommon Good 211 W. In the first half of the 20th century, the disease known as poliomyelitis panicked Americans. Just like COVID today, polio stopped ordinary life in its tracks. Tens of thousands were paralyzed when the virus attacked their nervous systems. Many were left unable to walk. In the worst cases, people's breathing muscles stopped working, and they were placed in an iron lung, a large machine that fit their entire bodies from the neck down. Vaccines brought an end to the epidemic in the 1950s, and gradually, iron lungs became obsolete. The last ones were manufactured in the late ‘60s. Today, there are two people in America who still use an iron lung. One of them is Martha Lillard. This is her story. *** This story has support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and listeners like you. Music from Blue Dot Sessions, Epidemic Sounds, and the song “Iron Lung” by Taylor Phelan and the Canes. This week's sponsors include Uncommon Good, go to uncommongoods.com/diaries for 15% off.

How do you talk to your kids or loved ones about God when you feel like you don't have all the answers? When you have big questions of your own? How about when the story books and church lessons don't seem to fit with what you know about faith, and God, and Jesus? Author Matthew Paul Turner began writing children's books because he faced those same challenges in talking to his own kids about God and faith. Listen in as we hear his story, and talk about some great ways to engage discussions of faith for our kids, and even ourselves! What if we weren't afraid of questions? What if we embraced the idea that God delights in us? What if we were curious? What if we stepped into a bit of whimsey? On a personal note, our whole team and our kids have been blessed by Matthew's books. We highly recommend them! And... We say it every time, but this was such a good convo! Don't miss it. :)And don't miss Matthew's latest book: What is God Like? , co-written by the late Rachel Held Evans.Check out Matthew's other books at matthewpaulturner.comFind Matthew on social media @matthewpaulturnerSupport the show (https://uncommongoodsd.com/give)
In a fascinating and informative interview, Nancy Mintie, the Executive Director of Uncommon Good - a Claremont-based organization focused on "Empowering families through education, medicine, and the environment", recounts her selfless and generous, lifelong path of service to, and advocacy for those in our society who often need help the most and yet have the least access to it. Immediately after graduating from UCLA's Law School in 1979, Nancy moved to the Catholic Worker soup kitchen and set up her first law practice inside a rusty construction trailer there. She began offering free legal services to the neighborhood. Ever since, Nancy has provided free legal representation and assistance, defended civil rights while creating jobs and making available nutritious, local-grown produce therough her innovative farming program. Her stories of success using creative and effective measures to help others help themselves and improve their quality of life are inspiring, refreshing and motivating. Nancy Mintie shows that clever solutions to problems combined with tenacious effort, effecting change for the better really does work. =====================================================================To volunteer, contribute or get more information, visit the Uncommon Good websitehttps://uncommongood.org/For more information, contact:Nancy MintieExecutive DirectorUncommon Good211 W. Most of us love the idea of grace for ourselves. In theory, it's great for others, too. (Until we have to give grace, that is). But have you ever thought of grace as scary? Well, we think a real understanding of grace can be frightening for those of us who love to control and measure our own growth and progress. Join the team as we struggle through this concept of scary grace...We also mention our new Uncommon [good] Spotify Playlist. It's a collection of songs that have been meaningful for us in this 2020 life. AND it's collaborative, so you can add songs to it! We'd love to hear what songs have been keeping you sane and giving you hope these days. Besides going to school with Pam Martin at MCHS, we worked together for years and years at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. In fact she trained me in my first position in the Food and Beverage Department.
