Claremont is exemplary in its charitable efforts. Claremont's chapter of the Children's Foundation of America is among the most enduring and effective of our charity organizations. In this informative and uplifting interview, CFA's Volunteer Coordinator, Christina Garcia, highlights some of their many community-based programs that help children in need so that they may lead healthy, productive lives. Many events that residents and visitors attend each year are put on by Claremont's CFA, with the invaluable help of Christina's many dedicated volunteers. The events are all aimed at filling the gap between the children's true needs and what public funding is able to provide. In this episode, Christina describes how these events - the Toy Drive, The Beer and Wine Walks, Holiday Heroes gift drives and the popular CFA Charity Golf Classic, as examples - have become anticipated, well-attended annual traditions enjoyed by Claremont residents and visitors while providing opportunities to measurably improve children's lives. Listen to the episode, then maybe contact Christina or meet her at one of the events. When you do, mention how much you liked her turn on Claremont Speaks, of course, and take her up on her invitation to volunteer or support the CFA - something you'll never regret.Visit the Children's Foundation of America Websitehttps://childrensfoundationofamerica.org/Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. Everyone in Claremont is affected by the growing homelessness population in one way or another. At a recent Claremont meeting with representatives from Claremont PD and the City Staff, one key question was "What can be done - right now?" to solve the homeless problem in the Village business district. Anne Miskey, President and CEO of Union Station Homeless Services and a nationally recognized expert on ending homelessness, took a turn at the microphone to help answer this and other important, related questions. Spend an hour with Anne to understand how the right temporary and permanent housing programs really can work; truly be the catalyst to changing the lives of the unhoused and improve the quality of the community as a whole. As objective proof that these programs perform so well, she invites those who would like a tour of other successful programs, or just to ask questions, to contact her directly. And when you do, don't hesitate to mention how her episode persuaded you to investigate further, get the facts, and think critically about this growing problem in Claremont - and all across the country.Anne Miskey's LinkedIn profile, which highlights her many credentials and accomplishments: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anne-miskey/Contact information:Email: amiskey@unionstationhs.orgWebsite: https://unionstationhs.org/Address: 825 E. The US, and Claremont specifically, have experienced an increase in reported instances of antisemitic and other hate crimes recently. Most Claremont residents condemn such actions, but there are still those who cling to the mistaken and irrational beliefs that have been around for thousands of years. The Jewish Federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys, led by their Executive Director, Jason Moss, firmly believe that antisemitism and all forms of hate and "othering" can be overcome. Jason and his dedicated staff are taking a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach to stopping antisemitism and defending, supporting and improving the lives of the Jewish communities in our area, The Jewish Federation's efforts are paying off, however he cautions that success will be found in playing "the long game" - tenacious and consistent efforts over time -if they are truly to educate and change the hearts and minds of those who don't understand that everyone is more similar than different. In this candid and forthright interview, Jason details the many creative and effective ways their dedicated staff pursues in helping their members live the best Jewish life they can and combat antisemitism (and all forms of "othering" hate) where it arises. They seek to build relationships, educate and and work towards forming a coalition of groups to counter those who commit the damaging and atrocious acts that make the news all to often lately, and invite listeners to join their fight on whatever level they can. After listening to this episode, take a moment to visit the Federation's website and learn more about all the different community activities they offer, from cooking to stand-up comedy, to see if there is something right for you. Dr. Evaggelos Vallianatos, one of Claremont's many authors and resident authority on broad spectrum of topics, including zoology and the history of science, has worked on Capitol Hill and at the US Environmental Protection Agency for almost three decades. Dr. Vallianatos took a break from his research and writing to give Claremont Speaks some insight into how the EPA started and what the early days were like, and the corruption and duplicitous research that has happened since, including how President Biden might best make the most on his pledge to rebuild and restore the EPA to being honest, transparent and effective - in short, fulfilling its original purpose. In this episode, Dr. Vallianatos focuses on the over-use of pesticides and the deleterious effects that multi-billion dollar corporations' "EPA-Approved" neurotoxins have on bees and other animals, and human children and adults. As a counter measure, he highlights the many advantages of consuming exclusively Certified Organic food,, including recommendations for the CUSD to help our students be as healthy and able to learn as possible.A returning guest on Claremont Speaks, Dr. Vallianatos never fails to bring new perspectives and valuable insights on his topics, relating what one might think are only national/federal issues back to Claremont, his home of many years. Invest in listening to this episode and taking Dr. Vallianatos' recommendations to heart, and enjoy the ROI in terms of a longer, healthier life.Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. Key questions in selecting a candidate include "Do I really know them, and will they truly represent my vision, values and objectives for the school district?" In this candid and personal interview, Aaron Peterson reveals his path to this point, his personal stake in CUSD's success - including the education of his own children - and answers those questions in sharing his hopes and vision for the direction and future of the Claremont Unified School District. Vying for the vacated Trustee Area 4 board seat, Aaron, without hesitation or equivocation, eloquently provides insight into his positions on some of the most important and often controversial issues facing the CUSD today, including DEI, book banning and "teaching to the test."For anyone who has yet to make a choice, or is genuinely concerned as to who, really, they are putting at the helm of their student's education, this episode is required listening. Aaron's extraordinary interview will be of value to anyone looking to decide which candidate is best to earn their vote. In the ongoing evolution of the housing project slated for the site of the former La Puerta school, many aspects have changed, some several times. Eric Nelson, Vice President of Community Development at Trumark Homes, has been collaborating with Claremont's schools, city staff, residents and other stakeholders for over three years, aiming to get a project most everyone will like and approve to construct. Eric was previously a guest on Claremont Speaks (April of 2021, Click here to listen) Eric has returned to Claremont Speaks to provide updates on the project's evolution, clarify the current status (May, 2023) and de-bunk some of the misinformation surrounding the project. He then provides a look at the different directions the project may take in the future, given Trumark's stated intent to file a supplemental building application under a provision of Senate Bill 330, which guarantees expedited approval if the developer sets aside 20% of the new units for low income buyers. Although Mr. Nelson describes this as a "bookmark", he elaborates on why it is not Trumark's preferred option. For anyone affected by this project - whether neighbors, prospective home-buyers, or those concerned about the funding to the Claremont School District, Eric Nelson's insight into the project and what they are aiming to do for the community should be on your "required listening" list of podcasts. Sometimes the catalyst that drives an epiphany is almost accidental, yet can bring out the very best in people, and puts them on the course to what they are sure is their true purpose. For Dr. Wen Chen, her awakening happened after a conversation with one of her colleagues regarding the events of Tiananmen Square, in 1989. Until that conversation, she believed the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) line; that nothing much had happened, and the students and people were the ones who attacked the soldiers. After seeing the videos, she realized all she had been told had been a lie, investigated further and discovered the limitless deceit and corruption of the CCP.She simply could not do nothing. After learning the truth - experiencing a kind of "awakening" - Dr. Chen is now actively educating people about the real conditions and practices in today's China. Claremont Speaks was fortunate to have Dr. Chen tell her story to this point, then discuss the state of the situation in China today and the CCP's goals for the future. Anyone who believes communism is, somehow, the better system, owes it to themselves to listen to Dr. Chen's recounting of the unbridled evil - murder for profit - which is conducted daily by the CCP. Conservative estimates are that upward of 80 million lives have been taken by harvesting organs, which are then provided to the CCP's elite or sold to wealthy transplant patients in China, the US and around the world.Dr. Chen has much more to tell, and Claremont Speaks would like to have her back. She asked that listeners suggest what they would like to know about the real China, which will be the topic for her next visit. There is a direct relationship between the value of living in Claremont and the quality of Claremont's schools. In an effort to maintain and strengthen that link, Alex McDonald MD is running for Claremont Unified School District (CUSD) in the Special Election for Trustee, District 4 to be held on July 25, 2023. Alex was able to take a short break from his busy schedule as a CUSD parent and his practice as a family and sports medicine specialist to answer some of the most pressing questions about his perspectives, plans and strategies should he be elected. In this very personal and forthright interview, Alex reveals that he, by personal experience, knows what it is like to be a patient with critical needs and a student with special educational requirements. As a physician, more than most, he sees the direct and collateral results and benefits of a good education , as well as the disadvantages and damage that poor education can cause. As a result, as CUSD's D4 Trustee, he can focus on solving the many crucial issues facing the students, faculty, administration and board. Alex openly and honestly takes on a variety of very direct questions about the toughest current topics, such as critical race theory, gender identification, gun control and shooter/lock-down drills, childhood obesity and diabetes due to today's diet and exercise habits, drugs in the schools, and the immediate, if not crisis-level need for increasing the physical, emotional and mental health of our students. As a physician who has made a career of healing others, he believes that his education, experience and his many successes bring an extra layer of unique qualifications that he can apply directly to improving the quality and effectiveness of the education which CUSD students receive. For anyone who has or, actually is, a student in the CUSD system, and especially if you are in District 4, this interview should be considered required listening before meeting him at a public meeting or Candidate Forum, and certainly before casting your vote.=================================For more information, visit Alex McDonald's CUSD campaign Website:https://www.mcdonald4cusd.com/ Email:mcdonald4cusdPlatform:https://www.mcdonald4cusd.com/dr-alexs-platformOn Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/McDonald4CUSDOn Twitterhttps://twitter.com/mcdonald4cusdOn Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/mcdonald4cusd/Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. Political activist/Grass Roots advocate Mike Netter joins Claremont Speaks to discuss key topics, including the recall efforts of Governor Gavin Newsom and District Attorney George Gascón. Energetic, informed and interesting, his passion is to create a better political landscape for California and the "ordinary" people in it. Mike is one of the driving forces behind the recent recall efforts of Gavin Newsome and George Gascon. Mike, along with others, decided to launch a recall of Gavin Newsom when they noticed California was going downhill. In this ultra-candid and honest conversation, Mike unreservedly emphasizes the importance of ordinary people using common sense and the low-cost/free data and other tools at hand to take action in order to make a difference. He covers many of the issues California is facing, such as a lack of water, a poorly protected power grid system, crime, and homelessness; and stresses the importance of people taking action on these issues in order to continuously improve California - and particularly Claremont - and get us off the slippery slope on which we find ourselves.Mike is the Vice Chair of Rebuild California, a non-partisan grassroots, groundswell movement. Their mission is to take action where government officials have failed the voters and citizens. The goal is to stop looking to our government for solutions to the problems we all face and take constructive corrective action and rebuild California. Three members of the activist group Claremont Streets for People - Ross Pringle, Buff Brown, and Nic Lucio - took the opportunity to introduce themselves and the Streets for People group, then explain their strategy to reach their goal of making the city and its streets safer and more enjoyable. As strong advocates for bike and pedestrian safety, they put forth how residents have a proven pent-up demand for cycling in Claremont, and that safer streets would help achieve that, along with a multitude of collateral upsides, including the benefits of exercise, lowering congestion, reducing transportation and living costs, and increasing the amount of economic activity in the city. As long-time cyclists and Claremont residents, they are stakeholders - as are most residents and visitors to the city - in increasing bike ridership, much as has been done in Culver City, for example, The progress and improvements are directly attributable to many factors, including smart, focused leadership and bike-conscious street and thoroughfare engineering. Streets for People hopes to help change Claremont by breaking California's long-time focus on moving cars at the expense of cyclists and pedestrians. The group invites everyone to join them, in any capacity, to help elevate Claremont to becoming and inspiration and aspirational standard in this regard. There is conclusive and convincing evidence that this can be done, and is well worth the efforts. Visit their website, attend their monthly meetings and find out how you can be a part of one of the most essential and beneficial changes Claremont can make. ========================Websitehttp://claremontstreetsforpeople.org/EmailClaremontSP@gmail.comResource PageCLICK HERE to Sign up to join this important and timely movementHelp make Streets for People a reality in Claremont! Nutritious, healthy plants surround us--in our neighborhoods, where we work, and where we call home. For Claremont's Earth Day Celebration on April 23, expert forager Douglas Kent is leading a foraging tour of Claremont, hosted by Sustainable Claremont as part of its continuing effort to make Claremont a more sustainable community. Doug started eating weeds in 1979 and has never looked back. Since 2008, he has been teaching the techniques of foraging and wildcrafting at Cal Poly Pomona. In this episode - somewhat of a preview to the workshop - Doug highlights several plants - weeds to some - that grow just about everywhere, and are seldom recognized as the healthy foods they really are. Plants people walk past every day, and usually try to destroy or prevent, are actually better for eating than much of what is found in the produce section of your grocery store. In Doug's workshop/tour, he will showcase ways to protect yourself, the most common foraged foods, and delicious treats that are often missed in the San Gabriel Valley. Along with six other books, he is the author of “Foraging Southern California: 118 Nutritious, Tasty Edibles to Harvest in Bulk,” Doug is one of the nation's leading authorities on this topic, and received both his masters degrees from Cal Poly Pomona; one in Regenerative Studies and the other in Landscape Architecture. He is the principal of Douglas Kent & Associates in Orange, and is an adjunct professor at the John Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies at Cal Poly Pomona.========================================Get Tickets:https://www.eventbrite.com/e/urban-foraging-workshop-tickets-543297035057https://allevents.in/claremont/urban-foraging-workshop/10000543297035057Learn More about Douglas Kenthttps://experts.cpp.edu/member/douglas-g-kent/https://www.anfractus.com/Contact Douglas Kentnewair@mindspring.comFind Doug's cited book on Amazon.Foraging Souther California: 118 Nutritious, Tasty and Abundant Foodshttps://www.amazon.com/Foraging-Southern-California-Nutritious-Edibles/dp/1591939151/ref=sr_1_3Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. Assembly Bill 1482 (“TENANT PROTECTION ACT OF 2019″) and Claremont's proposed ordinances, which could further enhance the level of tenant protection provided, have presented Claremont's City Council with some unique opportunities and some difficult decisions. Katie Wand, the city's Assistant to the City Manager, is one of the key researchers on this topic and chief organizer of Claremont's public outreach efforts on this matter. Katie and the City's staff have made every effort to reach out to those most affected by these ordinances, all to support fact-based, fair and reasonable recommendations to the council. Katie was able to bring the benefit of her exhaustive efforts to Claremont Speaks to break down and explain the many issues and collateral effects surrounding the ordinances, should they be enacted in the last council meeting of April 2023.Landlords, tenants and, really, any residents who are directly or indirectly affected by these ordinances owes it to themselves to listen to Katie's unbiased and straightforward discussion of the bill, ordinances and their many possible affects to all involved. Claremont: the city of trees, bees and PhDs. Human trafficking and prostitution are not usually the first thing people associate with the city's name. However, like nearly every other city in the US, Claremont has its share......and the problem is rapidly growing. Antonio Bestard is inarguably one of the area's top defense attorneys, especially among those focused on defending those accused of Human trafficking and Prostitution, among other crimes. He is one of only three Certified Specialists in Criminal Law, per the State Bar of California, Board of Legal Specialization in the Pomona Valley. His combined educational and trial experience - including trying over 400 criminal cases in over four decades as a Private Attorney - stands as testament to the authority and validity of the perspectives, analysis and suggested solutions he offers in this frank and cogent interview.Mr. Bestard was kind enough fit an interview with Claremont Speaks into his otherwise full schedule to introduce himself further to the community, accurately describe the real situation at-hand and offer his own expert insights and real-world recommendations on how Claremont and its residents might begin to solve this complex and daunting problem. Claremont Speaks is taking a new direction. Attorney Antonio Bestard's interview, where he freely and honestly shares the considerable value of his experience, and then offers his real-world recommendations on how Claremont can truly begin to mitigate this activity, is the perfect pivot-point. This episode is a must-listen for everyone concerned with maintaining Claremont as the premium-quality community it is known - and continually strives - to be. Please share this episode, and contact Antonio for more information and/or should the need arise. The issues that come before the City Council in Claremont are often complex, nuanced with underlying rules, considerations and trade-offs of which most citizens are unaware. Whether to keep Claremont's parklets is no exception. Katie Wand, Claremont Staff's Assistant to the City Manager, offers up the results of her research, highlighting the many facets involved in whether Claremont keeps their Parklets - the outdoor dining areas permitted and built as a measure to allow restaurants to continue operation during the COVID pandemic. Many of the patrons of Claremont's Village have come to like the outdoor dining experience they provide, but not everyone is looking to keep the parklets in perpetuity. Now that regulations regarding emergency measures due to COVID are sunsetting, the decision to keep, remove or construct a compromise regarding the parklets comes before the City Council.Ms. Wand does an expert and detailed deep-dive into the subject, revealing the many considerations, rules and regulations which will affect the parklets ongoing presence, versus returning to pre-pandemic form. However you feel about the parklets, this episode is a "must listen" to fully understand the requirements, costs and benefits involved in the ongoing success of the outdoor dining experience many now enjoy.================================For more information, visit the City of Claremont's website: https://www.ci.claremont.ca.usOr visit City Hall: City of Claremont207 Harvard Ave., Claremont, CA 91711Phone: 909-399-5460Follow at https://twitter.com/CityofClaremontOr contact Katie Wand directly KWand@ci.claremont.ca.usFeedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. Marshmallows are reported to have been invented in Egypt, around 2000 BC. Four millenniums later, Lani Fox - owner of Rosemallow Artisanal, a small batch artisanal confection company - has taken marshmallows to the next level. Opening last year, Lani has been creating exciting, innovative and seasonal desserts using ingredients grown in her own garden and/or selected by Johanna Teissere, Farm Director and Master Gardener at Uncommon Good, from their farm-fresh fruits, vegetables and other produce. Their collaboration has raised marshmallows from their familiar spots in hot cocoa or on graham crackers to being an irresistible new dessert with unusual flavor pairings. If you try some of their best sellers, such as loquat and fennel or lavender and mint; or those emulating cocktails, like grapefruit spritzer or Spicy Chocolate Almond Liqueur, you'll understand why Rosemallow Artisanal's specialties have become so popular, so quickly. Take a few minutes to listen to the genuinely passionate and enthusiastic Lani and Johanna as they recount the creation of the business and their journey to this point. And, when trying some, please let Lani and Johanna know you enjoyed their episode; there's likely a smile and sample in the bargain.=======================================Visit Lani's website for more informationwww.rosemallow.comEmail: rosemallowartisanal@gmail.comor text/call 909-833-3205Stop in to see Johanna Teissere at their Claremont Uncommon Good farm and Earthen Office, located at: 211 W. Claremont is regarded by many as "where you go for what you can't get anywhere else", which only starts to describe the offerings at 2023's Common Good International Film Festival. After a COVID-related hiatus, the festival is returning , better than ever. Festival leaders, eloquent spokespeople (and mega-movie-fans) Jeremy Fackenthal and Jim Fahey share the purpose and goals of the festival and its sponsor, The Center for Process Studies. Jeremy and Jim provide highlights about the festival's genesis and over twenty year history, discuss its current iteration and do a deep-dive preview of several of the "don't miss" movies being showcased. Especially interesting is the explanation of how and why the 10 movies that are to be shown, February 17-20 at the Laemmle Theater, were selected.Aiming for more than just entertainment, the festival's film choices are intended to leave one thinking long after the movie is over, and aims to raise questions about the topic and story...which can be discussed after the film in an open forum, in some cases with the directors themselves. For those searching for a higher level, unique and an thought provoking movie experience, this year's Common Good International Film Festival is sure to be the holy grail you seek.======================================================Visit Common Good Films:Website: https://commongoodfilms.orgYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Common+Good+FilmsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/CommonGoodFilmFestival Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/commongoodfilmfestival/And Jim Fahey's Blog, which includes more insights and reviews of current cinematic offerings, including The Festival's movies:https://airplanemode.substack.com/Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. Dr. Deepak Shimkhada, PhD, returns to Claremont Speaks to provide some insight into four new books he has either written or been a chief collaborator. As way of recording the highlights of his nearly eight decades of extraordinary experiences, Dr. Shimkhada chronicles many of his best memories in Nepal to California: A Life of Adventure and Memories. He recounts growing up in a small village near Mt. Everest, his transition to Kathmandu, Chicago and then Los Angeles, Dr. Shimkhada takes the reader on a ride of discovery and adventure that few are privileged to experience. Dr. Shimkhada recently completed one of his long-term projects, the translation to English of Sylvain Lévi's monumental work Le Népal: Étude Historique d'un Royaume Hindou, published in French in the early 1900s. Published as Nepal: Historical Study of a Hindu Kingdom from the original French manuscript, it has stood the test of time as the standard for scholarly work on Nepal. In addition to his own children's books, Deepak has assisted and guided his young family members in writing their first books. The Boy from the Planet Zobur, by Sanjan Mahalingam, is a vivid and captivating cautionary tale about the consequences of mis-treating the environment.Just Keep Going, by Rohin Relan, weaves an inspirational story about growth and the power of family, and includes elements of soccer - popular in Nepal. The starts in Kathmandu, a city familiar to Dr. Shimkhada and his large, multi-generational family.Smart, eloquent and engaging to listen to, this insightful review of works is entertaining and informative even before reading them. Each is available through Amazon - the links above will take you directly to the specific Amazon web-page. Enjoy the interview and Dr. Shimkhada's latest works, and when you see him in and around Claremont, don't hesitate to tell him how much you enjoyed them.===========================================================Deepak Shimkhada, Ph.D.Adjunct Professor, Chaffey CollegePresident, Indic Foundation (www.indic.org)Email: dshimkhada@gmail.comAmazon Author Twitter: @dshimkhadawww.deepakshimkhada.comwww.nepalmemoryproject.comhttp://nepalmemoryproject.com/Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. The Antikythera Mechanism, an astronomical computer probably crafted in Rhodes in the second century BCE, is regarded as being the first precision, gear driven calculator and the forerunner of modern computers. Found by sponge-divers as a corroded lump in a 2,100-year-old Roman-era shipwreck in the early 1900's, it is one of the most advanced examples of technology ever discovered from the ancient world. The level of genius revealed by this wondrous mechanism has fascinated and astounded historians for decades. A historian of science and a staunch environmental advocate, Dr. Evaggelos Vallianatos returns to Claremont Speaks to relate how the mechanism was created, lost, found and then studied and investigated. From that foundation, he extrapolates the implications to what today's society could have been had the mechanism and the guiding philosophies and purposes that created it been allowed to flourish. This interview provides a window into how the achievements and lessons of the past speak loudly as cautionary tales regarding the efforts and pursuits of technology today, and how crucial it is to continually measure the ongoing advancement by whether it is truly good for all of society, not simply to enrich corporate coffers.Caution: listening to this episode may foster a deeper curiosity about the Antikythera Mechanism and how ancient Greek philosophy, if applied to today's technological advances, might very well help, instead of continue to damage, today's environment.==============================================For more on the Antikythera Mechanism Dr. Vallianatos' book, The Antikythera Mechanism: The Story Behind the Genius of the Greek Computer and its DemiseAvailable on AmazonDr. Vallianatos' presentation on YouTube:https://youtu.be/8nNbiLf2_FsTo contact Dr. Vallianatos, please email claremontspeaks@gmail.com.Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. Kathryn Mora - a popular writer for The Claremont Courier and one of the most favored by Claremont Speaks' listeners - returns to the microphone to relate a story about a recent outpatient visit in which the staff illustrated some of the all-too-common treatment of those who, as Kathryn delicately puts it, "have had a lot of birthdays." Her experience in one of Claremont's otherwise best medical facilities showcased what can go wrong as a result of culturally ingrained behavior towards older people, and serves as a metaphor for the condition throughout society - which doesn't have to be that way, In an effort to offer suggestions for improvement, all in the spirit of constructive criticism, Kathryn spotlights an interactive style people often use. Though they mean well, the practice is actually quite destructive in its own way. With that as the framework, she offers sage constructive criticism and suggestions that most anyone can begin using right away, and would inarguably benefit both parties.Give Kathryn's short but truly heartfelt episode a listen, and see if her experience seems similar - and all too familiar. Heed her nudge to take action, and take advantage of her offer to help - maybe if/when the next incident occurs, the factors for change can be more easily put in motion, with a measurable improvement as the outcome.==========================================Kathryn invites anyone who would have had a similar experience and would like to discuss it to contact her by email: kathrynmora@gmail.comor visit her Facebook Page:https://www.facebook.com/kathrynmoraand contact her using Facebook MessengerFeedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. The Random Shorts series is an effort to post the several short but enjoyable interviews that, unfortunately, had to be temporarily set aside (not forgotten) due to life, time and scheduling constraints. As everyone was leaving the Happy Crowd's last concert, likable and witty Nancy James accepted the invitation from our roving interviewer to take the mic. She briefly discusses how much she and her family enjoyed the Happy Crowd that night and over the years, where she's from and what brought her family here, and then opined on her favorite of Claremont's many great qualities. Listen and enjoy the brief but sparkling repartee with Nancy, who was so casual and friendly as to leave one wanting to hear more. One warm evening, during the summer concert series, when most everyone else was not so interested, Claremont resident and experienced competitive cyclist Miguel Farer was kind enough to take the microphone and talk with Claremont Speaks' undaunted roving interviewer. His interview deserves to be enjoyed, so it is released now among the Random Shorts series. As a very nice surprise, Miguel spoke about his long and interesting career as a top-rated cyclist - competing with Lance Armstrong and Greg LeMonde. He highlighted some of his experiences, interactions with the GoaTs, and talked about the incredible bikes he's ridden - all while relaxing and enjoying a root beer float out in front of Bert & Rocky's ice cream emporium. MIguel's short interview - edited for sound quality improvement and filler-word reduction, but little else - is effortlessly entertaining, giving a little peek into a sport and a culture not everyone sees from the inside, as Miguel had done for decades. Miguel's discussion spotlights a career of cycling most only aspire to, and hints that in Claremont, you never really know who you might be sitting next to on a street corner bench. This interview is just the kind of rough gem that our mobile agent is hoping to find when walking around Claremont, looking like a microphone-laden nomad. If and when you spot him at the local concerts and other events, don't hesitate to step up, extend a hand, and ask for the opportunity to tell Claremont and the world whatever you've always wanted to say.Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. During the year, the hardworking staff at Claremont Speaks sometimes ventures into the wilds of Claremont, armed only with a field recorder and a couple of microphones, in hopes of speaking to everyday people about everyday stuff.Unfortunately, sometmes a few of these random, short interviews get superseded due to time and scheduling constraints. This series - Random Shorts - is intended to wrap up what has been an exceptional 2022, and air those worthy and real interviews, in their natural state, as much as is practicable. This interview, with the lovely and talented Lori and her conversational companion Hector, was conducted during the height of the Happy Crowd's last performance. Although most of the background sounds have been masterfully mitigated, the conversation is real and unedited. The pair discuss their careers, growing up in Claremont, how Claremont's people are accepting and friendly more so than elsewhere, and a myriad of other short topics. These Random Shorts are intended to simply give the people that choose to speak a chance to be heard. Look for more of the best of 2022's Random Shorts to come. For 2023, if you see the Claremont Speaks' interviewer walking around - easily identifiable by the fashion-forward "Claremont Speaks" T-shirt and a handful of recording gear - be ye not shy; step up, say hi, and ask to talk about...whatever is on your mind.Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. Claremont loves their dogs; they go everywhere with them, and during a trip through the village, not seeing one being walked would be odd. Among those, few are more famous and beloved than "Ezer the Bagel", the star of a new book series from parent, teacher of 30+ years and new author Marisa Nicely. Marisa/Ezer's new book is one of those rarities that both entertain but also carry an important and profound message that helps children with important life skills, such as: self worth, awareness of self and others, resilience, courage, caring and purpose. Marisa recounts the highlights of her journey to fulfilling her lifelong goal of writing children's books, and this first volume completely validates that effort. "The Rescue" already has readers asking for more; the second book is written, due to publish in the spring. Expertly illustrated and carrying a strong message anyone can enjoy, "Ezer the Bagel" is destined to becoming a "must-have" addition to any family's library. Marisa's stories of her life, her journey to this point and then how the book came to be are beyond engaging, but second only to reading the book itself - preferably aloud to others. Marisa and Ezer are welcome visitors when they do "story time" at schools, libraries and for "kids of all ages" - such as those at Pilgrim Place. Enjoy the episode and the book, and share both with everyone you know, If you tell Marisa and Ezer how much you enjoyed both, you'll get a big smile and an enthusiastic tail-wag, respectively, guaranteed. ============================Contact Marisa through Ezer's website: https://www.ezerthebagel.com/contactTo book a visit with Marisa and Ezer: https://www.ezerthebagel.com/book-visitOR...Contact Marisa and Ezer By email: hello@ezerthebagel.comVisit them onFacebook and Instagram (@ezerthebagel) pages to keep current on what they're doing and where they'll be.Visit 42nd Street Bagels in Claremont for a delicious "Ezer" Bagel DogTo purchase the book, visit: Amazon Barnes & Noble BAM! Claremont's business community is made up of many unique, specialized retail destinations and relatively few mega-corporate businesses; no "big-box" stores, no large malls, and few classic "fast food" establishments. Claremont resident and entrepreneur Matt Zartuche, CEO of Paymintz Merchant Services Solutions, set aside a few moments to explain how having the right set of business tools and support is essential in competing with the large businesses and optimizing what is an ideal environment for entrepreneurs, small retailers and other growing businesses. Running a small business is tough enough. To be optimally competitive, most solo-preneurs and small, hardworking, clever business owners could use help with the innumerable important, but time-sucking tasks and headaches - payment processing, sales tax collection/reporting, and creating and growing one's on-line presence and sales volume, as a few examples. Matt explains how automating and streamlining these processes frees the owners to build on the core strengths of their business, and provides an example of how one business increased their volume by several hundred percent. These services also help enterprises classified as "high risk" - debt collection and cannabis/CBD products for example - get access to the kinds of financial services that they absolutely need and are often denied. If only for the information and education, every small business is encouraged to listen to this episode. Matt invites all to contact him (no obligation) - to answer any questions and learn how these products and services could be customized to render the absolute most from all your efforts. Claremont is rich in many resources, not the least of which are the smart, active and involved residents. One of the most prominent is Evaggelos Vallianatos, Ph.D , an ecopolitical theorist and environmental strategist, historian and outspoken activist in the fight against global warming. He describes this struggle as a matter of life-and-death for us all. In the first of what is planned to be a series of forthright and pointed interviews, Dr. Vallianatos posits that Claremont could, should - must - be a leader in this fight, and how Claremont could lead by example. Claremont's leadership in this regard - if the city leaders, businesses and residents so choose to accept the challenge - would benefit Claremont environmentally, financially, and by increasing the value of living in the city, all while making valuable and effective local contributions against global warming. One may not be able to change the world, but the measures to change things locally are well within reach.Dr. Vallianatos' Contact Information:evaggelosg@gmail.comhttp://vallianatos.blogspot.comhttps://www.counterpunch.org/author/evaggelos-vallianatos/https://muckrack.com/evaggelosvallianatosSelected Highlights of Dr. Vallianatos' Biography:Experience: Capitol Hill, 1976-78: International politics of food and agricultureUS Environmental Protection Agency, 1979-2004: environmental regulation, human and ecological risks of pesticides and industrialized agriculture, benefits of organic farming alternatives to industrialized farming, climate changeTeachingDr. Vallianatos has taught at several universities, including Pitzer College and California Polytechnic University, Pomona.Books by Dr. Vallianatos (Amazon Links)This Land is Their Land: How Corporate Farms Threaten the WorldThe Antikythera Mechanism: The Story Behind the Genius of the Greek Computer and its Demise Poison Spring: The Secret History of Pollution and the EPA Fear in the Countryside: The Control of Agriculture in the Poor Countries by Non-Peasant Elites. During a vocal civil demonstration in late September, a group of Iranian-American women sought to raise awareness of the fate of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year old Iranian woman that was beaten into a coma, and later death, by the Iranian government's "Morality Police." The ironically named enforcement group took exception to how Amini was wearing a head scarf...with tragic results. Mandana Mojaverian, a Claremont resident, student and activist, took a few minutes out to talk to Claremont Speaks and explain what exactly happened, how things really are in Iran, what should be done about it, where NOT to find the truth and who should - and should not - get involved. She also recounts her journey to Claremont and some of the unexpected cultural differences she encountered along the way.Mandana's group's protest in September, along with many, many across the US and the world, recently appear to have been quite effective. The Wall Street Journal reported on December 4, 2022, that Iran's Attorney General, Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, stated that Iran had "disbanded its so-called morality police and is considering altering the requirement that women cover their heads in public." Mandana cautioned against too readily accepting that said by US news sources, but this seems to be generally corroborated by other sources. To Mandana and all those who voiced their opposition to Iran's actions, this shows that the combination of free speech - and the willingness to "say something" - can contribute to real change. You are invited and encouraged to return to Claremont Speaks any time.Wall Street Journal: Iran Disbands Morality Police, Considers Changing Hijab Laws, Official SaysFeedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. As a final cap to the day, a small group of local professors were kind enough to take a few minutes to get acquainted and provide their insight and impressions of the race, the value of a dog as a co-runner, and being in the Turkey Trot every year since the beginning. These learned folks touched on what they thought was the real value of higher education and considered creating a special classification for the participating population that have a "canine co-racer" - for that special class of runners that take their dog(s) everywhere...as well they should.Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. Claremont is a destination for many who seek to appreciate a variety of art forms, and among the most valued are independent films. Movie theaters were severely impacted by the pandemic, most vulnerable among them has been independent films. Vince Turner, however, is working to revive the movie-going experience by providing unique and interesting short-form, independent films in his weekly Claremont Film Festival. Showing first-rate, curated films selected from hundreds each week, Vince provides Claremont a movie experience in keeping with and befitting the city's tacit theme "Claremont, for what you just won't find anywhere else." Among the recent and upcoming selections are films about the cultural hurdles encountered when a Chinese auto parts company opens a factory in Ohio, sending a rocket/space probe to retrieve samples from an asteroid, and a documentary on the conflict in Ukraine in 2014 - the predecessor of the situation today.Vince offers his broad and ambitious perspectives on the social importance of the in-theater movie experience - postulating that one crafted "from Claremont, by Claremont, for Claremont...might be able to sustain itself simply because it would have the community effect." This and other insights, coupled with his anecdotes on starting the film festival and what it takes to produce it each week, make this episode one for all of Claremont. For those then motivated to attend the showing of his curated collection of movies each week, let Vince know you appreciate what he's doing and how much you liked his turn at the mic on Claremont Speaks.==================================================Contact Vince Turner for more information, location, movie titles and showtimes:vince@schoolbiz.comFeedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. In the crisp Thanksgiving morning of 2022, Claremont Speaks went to the Sunrise Rotary Club's Annual Turkey Trot, seeking to talk to those involved with the event. The ace pattaloog/sneaker-head team from Lucky Feet Shoes of Upland, Nichole and Kevin, were doing their best to educate and entertain the throngs of runners and those cheering them on. With their unrivaled command of footwear technology - and a dose of humor - they took a few moments to talk kicks with Claremont Speaks, and impart some little known facts about the importance of choosing the right shoe - or clog - and how it can affect one from the ankles up - even jaw alignment.=====================================Lucky Feet Shoes, located near Target in the Colonies Crossroads shopping center.Website - https://luckyfeetshoes.com/pages/upland1883 N. Before and, especially, during the pandemic, women in the Claremont artistic and business community needed help staying motivated, competitive...and profitable. Seeing a need, Elizabeth Preston, of Elizabeth's Art Studio created The Claremont Creative Connection; a tenacious and determined group of strong and talented women who were simply not going "give up" when the going got rough. Instead, Elizabeth has brought them together to share and benefit from one another's unique talents, skills, insight and encouragement. In this captivating round-table interview - first in a series to come - Elizabeth and many in her group of businesswomen - artists, curators, therapists, creators and more - introduce themselves, their background, the set of circumstances which brought them together and more. They then focus on how they are prospering far better as part of the group. Each member's story is honest, open and engaging, and shows how the group has been one of their key success factors in weathering the pandemic and succeeding since. They each invite the women entrepreneurs in Claremont (and surrounding areas), to listen to this episode, then explore participating in the CCC, and consider the benefits of sharing your own unique skills, experience and talents.==========================================Elizabeth PrestonClaremont Creative Connectionhttps://www.elizabethsartstudio.com/empreston6@gmail.comRobin Driscollhttps://rdphotoservices.com/robind@rdphotoservices.comZoe Tebeauhttp://zoetebeauestatesales.com/ Zoetebeau@aol.comSonya StumpSonja Stump Photographysonjastumpphoto@gmail.comKathleen McCallkathleenmccallartist@gmail.comPomona Valley Art Association/Gallery SOHOhttps://pvaa.net/Stevie Gomez Blairstevie.blair@gmail.comGina Carlsonhttps://www.yarnaholicstore.com/browncarlson@gmail.comLorri AngusLorri@innerbalanceholistic.comhttps://innerbalanceholistic.com/Angela MacArthurenchantedlilys240@gmail.comKristina MarlerKristinalmarler@gmail.comChristine Franconeonmoonartsupplies@gmail.comFeedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. Among the many, many traditional and iconic events in Claremont each year, The Claremont Sunrise Rotary Club's Annual Turkey Trot is consistently one of the most anticipated, fun and well-attended. Gabe Millar, a prominent Sunrise Rotary member and one of the folks you always see at just about every function in Claremont, was able to join Claremont Speaks to share the details of the 15th annual Claremont Sunrise Rotary Turkey Trot.Besides being a fun event, Gabe recounts the benefits to the Claremont Community and the help that the national and international Rotary group provides to people truly in need; such as shelter in hurricane devastate areas and food and supplies to people in war-ravaged areas including Ukraine. The sense of community combined with knowing that the entry fee is going to make Claremont and elsewhere measurably better is part of why Claremont looks forward to "The Trot" each year. No longer constrained by the pandemic, this year's hybrid event allows runners to choose between the traditional in-person race on Thanksgiving morning or a virtual race on a course of their choosing. Give Gabe a few minutes by listening to this episode, and then consider joining Claremont's fall classic in the heart of The Village on Thursday, November 24, 2022. And you'll surely see Gabe, and when you do, please let him know how much you liked his episode on Claremont Speaks.=================================================Claremont Sunrise Rotaryhttps://www.claremontsunriserotary.com/Sign up for the Claremont Turkey Trothttps://claremontturkeytrot.org/ Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. In the middle of the current race for the Claremont Unified School District's Board Seat for Area 4, experienced classroom educator and sixteen year CUSD School Board veteran Steven Llanusa took some time to respond to today's tough, complicated questions facing the Board, the staff and the students. Given the importance of the issues at hand, Steven Llanusa took Claremont Speaks' challenge to eclipse the level of the popular group forums, Steven embraced the opportunity and took full advantage of this open and completely unrestricted platform to provide direct, cogent answers - straight from his decades of experience and his heart - on topics that parents, students, faculty and staff...and most of Claremont...would surely place at the pinnacle of importance. The value of his experience, empathy and abilities is evident as he discusses school funding, critical race theory being taught (or not) in the schools, banning of books in the library vs. required reading, the value and harm of different levels of active shooter drills, mental health programs for the students and the impact/value of the School Resource Officers on the students as a few examples. If you care about Claremont's schools, this is the "must-listen" episode of this year's CUSD Board election. After listening and gaining a better understanding of this candidate, vote from a more informed vantage point. But DO vote, please. And when you see Steven, in the store, at a meeting or even in the park at the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, please take a few seconds to tell him how much you liked this CS interview.=======================Steven Llanusa's Contact Information:Email: stevenllanusa@gmail.comCampaign Website: tiny url.com/lea 2022Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. In the November 2022 election, to Claremont and La Verne, the contest for Director, Division III, of the Three Valleys Municipal Water District may be one of the most important. Seeking to take the area into the future is Javier Aguilar, an experienced and highly educated Senior Regional Planner with the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG). Javi has analyzed the data surrounding our current water situation - declining supply and prices rising faster than incomes - and believes, for the future, there are changes that can and need to be made. In this very candid interview, Javi - self-described as non-political and practical - outlines his vision for innovation and taking new directions will provide the needed solutions to our dilemma. He brings to light remedies at the local and regional levels, looking at breaking away from the practices of the past and treating the water that we have like the valuable resource it inarguably is.Recorded in one of Claremont's most popular, if not acoustically friendly restaurants, the ambient noise affected the sound quality. However, it did not tarnish Javi's core messages in the least. In answering each question, his interest, his knowledge and his passion for serving the community where he grew up comes through with crystal clarity. This episode is another must-listen for those who understand how water is one of the most fundamental components to the quality of life here and want to make an informed decision - and have a voice - on the direction(s) to be taken in the years...generations, really...to come. After listening, suggest to your friends they listen as well, and contact Javi with your questions, concerns or just to tell him how much you enjoyed this interview. And then be sure to vote. Outspoken and active, Mayor Jed Leano has spent the last four years being a catalyst for change. Brian Bowcock, the long-serving, incumbent candidate for Director of the Three Valleys Municipal Water Department, Division 3, brings over 60 years of experience and insights on the history, present state and future directions and decisions for the Southern California water industry. Brian draws on his wealth of hands-on experience gained from serving in many positions over dozens of years. Brian started working on water projects, as many do, in high school, operating a pickaxe and shovel, After ascending up through the ranks in a variety of positions, Brian moved to the TVMWD and has accumulated a long list of accomplishments ever since. He describes how the industry evolved, where it is now, and - most importantly - the future direction. He explains his choices on whether to mine for water at Bonanza Springs vs. capture, recycle and reuse local water - probably the most contested issue of this election.Regardless of your candidate preference, everyone with even a moderate interest in what goes on beyond the tap will enjoy this episode. reat stories and information for anyone interested in the local water industry. Once you have listened to Brian's episode and considered the importance of this election on the direction for sustainably supplying clean, safe water at the best price for our area, send Brian a message to let him know how much you learned and enjoyed his episode...and that, no matter which candidate you prefer, you will vote.Brian's Facebook Pagehttps://www.facebook.com/brian.bowcock.9Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/bowcock.brian/
Jeff Hanlon, a first-time candidate for Board Director of the Three Valleys Municipal Water District (TVMWD), Division 3, is is keenly concerned about the effects of climate change and how it will impact Claremont's water sources. He is beyond certain that continued reliance on the philosophies and methods used for the last century or more - prospecting and mining new, but unsustainable natural water sources - is a bad short term "fix" that will eventually leave the region high and dry, so to speak. In this interview, Jeff points out that this is one of the most important races in the election - the choices made in November will affect nearly every aspect of society, housing, growth, and value in Claremont and the surrounding area for generations to come. He presents the underlying realities and facts supporting his reasons for promoting the changes needed, and then explains why he is the best choice to bring them about.Listen to Jeff Hanlon's episode, then visit his website or contact him directly for more information. When you do, please tell Jeff that after listening to this episode you responded to his call to action to get educated. Get the information you need to make an informed voting decision - then vote. Claremont's Mayor Pro Tem, Ed Reece is one of the city's core group of people who are focused on, and dedicated to service to the community. In doing so, Ed is visible and known to the community through his past work on various committees and commissions, and over the last four years as a member of the City Council. Most who know Ed Reece now are unaware of the full measure of the unplanned life-experiences and challenges, and the choices he faced and made along the way. In this very personal and open interview, Ed traces his path and details his life-story, revealing the many obstacles - some life-threatening - that he's overcome along the way - that have influenced and shaped the tenacious public servant who is seen at nearly every council meeting, event, holiday celebration and city function as well as a full schedule of work behind the scenes.Ed's primary, if not sole objective for this interview was to let the listener get to know him, the "Real Ed Reece" that maybe not everyone fully does. We put aside the issues of the Council, the City, and the upcoming campaign for office, for now, to focus on that alone. After enjoying this episode, you'll agree that objective was met and doubly surpassed, and in doing so, set the bar considerably higher for similar interviews to come. Enjoy Ed's story, and then be sure to thank him for telling it on Claremont Speaks.

Claremont's Wendy Ramallo thought she had found "it" several times over - California's sun, law school, working at Los Angeles high-profile law firms, Washington DC, the Robert Kennedy Memorial, working with Father Greg Boyle (founder of Home Boy Industries) among other key positions. These all had both financial and spiritual rewards. However, she knew there was something...more. Her innate passion for doing something for someone else, combined with her skills as a lawyer and experience working on gun violence issues was catalyzed by the Uvalde, Texas shooting incident. She almost involuntarily reached out to Moms Demand Action to assist, knowing she had to do...something. Wendy founded the Pomona Valley group as a way of exponentially increasing the local difference she could make. Wendy was kind enough to press "pause" in her packed schedule one cool, quiet morning and join Claremont Speaks at Studio des Arbres d'Ombre. She recounts the life-journey that brought her to Claremont and then become the spark and driving force...or local coordinator...driving the PVMDA's efforts to reduce gun violence. CAUTION: Listening to Wendy's inspiring, motivational episode may cause an uncontrollable urge to get involved and help however you can. Side effects may include a penchant for eliminating accidental/suicidal gun deaths and a partiality for voting for true "gun sense" CUSD and City Council candidates.Contact Wendy: WendyRamallo@gmail.com Moms Demand Action - website: https://momsdemandaction.org/- on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MomsDemandActionCA/Father Greg Boyle's books on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/s?k=father+greg+boyle+books&crid=R5VAA228X40G&sprefix=Father+Greg+%2Caps%2C145&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_1_12
Clayton Becker has accomplished more than most in the years since graduating from Claremont High School, but to some, locally, he may be best known for his thoughtful, strong and data-backed responses and letters in the Claremont Courier. Recently, a column by Pomona College Professor Stephen Marks regarding water conservation prompted Clayton to submit his own insightful, circumspect and somewhat pointed response. Reading this, Claremont Speaks immediately invited Clayton to expand on his points to thoroughly explain and clarify his points, and really give Claremont, analogously, the rest of the story. Clayton provided his own fresh insights into Claremont's Housing/Water considerations, including recommendations for actions everyone can take, right now and in the future, to keep the water situation all of Southern California faces from unfavorably altering our city. Clayton delivers an educated, informative and yet entertaining interview - a "must-listen" for anyone living/owning in Claremont - now and for the foreseeable future, and is concerned with whether the limited water supply will affect the housing that's here now and yet to be built.Clayton Becker graduated from Claremont High School in 2016 and went straight to Columbia University in NYC, where he earned his Bachelor's Degrees in Economics and Political Science in Columbia's Dual BA program, both in NYC and France, Graduating Magna Cum Laude. He is now pursuing his PhD in Political Science at UCLA. For this podcast, however, Clayton can truly be considered "a student of Claremont." He grew up here and attended CUSD schools, met his fiancé here, and still calls Claremont home even while living in LA. At Columbia, his papers focused on and/or used Claremont as the study subject, focusing on the effects of districting and other topics. For those reasons and more, he should be regarded as one who truly understands Claremont, inarguably better than most.Clayton's Courier Letter (July 28, 2022)https://claremont-courier.com/opinion/opinion-water-zoning-and-the-suburban-ponzi-scheme-67106/ Clayton Becker's Linked-In page, detailing his wealth of education and breadth of experiencehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/clayton-becker-26238699/ Resources mentioned during the podcast:Arbitrary Lines: How Zoning Broke the American City and How to Fix Ithttps://www.amazon.com/Arbitrary-Lines-Zoning-Broke-American/dp/1642832545City Beautiful - YouTubeCity Beautiful is a YouTube channel dedicated to educating everyone about cities and city planning. The Concerts in the Park are a summer staple in Claremont, and The Happy Crowd has been one of the most beloved groups for over three decades. On August 11, 2022, The Happy Crowd - Hai, Smarty Marty, Collie and Kenny - graced the Memorial Park Bandshell for their final show, but were able to take a few minutes to talk to Claremont Speaks before commanding the stage and delighting the crowd...as always. The Happy Crowd spoke on how they started, and what a great ride it's been ever since. Most appreciative of Claremont - which they regard as "home" - they've loved all the enthusiasm they've received over all the years, from their first show to the last - both in the Memorial Park Bandshell. People who saw The Happy Crowd when they were young brought their kids and grandkids for the privilege of seeing their final show. The fans had their Happy Socks on and eagerly let the Happy Crowd whisk them away. Fans of all ages were singing along, dancing and spinning...enjoying their signature music, humor and overall upbeat and positive entertainment to the max. In this all-too-short interview, their message of affection and gratitude towards Claremont and their fans still comes through with crystal clarity, and this would be the show they would remember for the rest of their lives. ===================================================Independent Music Awardshttps://independentmusicawards.com/artist/the-happy-crowd/ On Amazon:Gettin' Happyhttps://www.amazon.com/music/player/albums/B0014DNHW0Happy Sockshttps://www.amazon.com/music/player/albums/B001120OBG
Given the drought situation at present, taking measures to reduce residential and personal water consumption only seems to make sense. However, adding hundreds of single-family homes and thousands of people makes those individual water conservation efforts seem like a "demoralizing exercise", according to a Claremont Courier submission by Stephen Marks, the Elden Smith Professor of Economics at Pomona College, In this detailed interview, Professor Marks describes, discusses the points from his published opinion piece in the Claremont Courier article on some of the key issues related to Claremont's/Southern California's need for water conservation while also serving the need for increasing affordable housing, and how the strategies of supply, conservation and pricing affect the affordability of new housing. Stephen's insight and positions echo the sentiment of many in Claremont and the surrounding area, and his ability to frame and explain the problem and analyze the various solutions make this episode - the second of three on this topic - particularly valuable to anyone wanting to truly understand a different perspective on the conservation efforts we are now being forced to take.=================================================Stephen Marks' Opinion article in the Claremont Courierhttps://claremont-courier.com/latest-news/opinion-water-conservation-is-a-demoralizing-exercise-66952/
In the first of three interviews focusing on whether the objectives for more - and more affordable - housing in Claremont are a good idea, or even possible, in the face of the drought SoCal is now experiencing. In the first of thee interviews on this topic, LIam Dillon, a star staff writer for the Los Angeles Times and (fellow) podcaster on this topic, shares the results of his investigative research into whether Southern California can continue to build more homes without a matching increase in the available water. Liam's passion is trying to uncover and solve the big problems that affect daily life in neighborhoods, and adequate water supply being intuitively in opposition to building new homes is key among those problems.Water supply has become one of the chief points of opposition to the construction of new homes in Claremont (and elsewhere). Liam expands on his LA Times article "Does California have enough water for lots of new homes? Yes, experts say, despite drought" where he takes the position that SoCal can add homes and residents without overtaxing the water supply. Liam explores the societal trade-offs, the measures everyone can take to help SoCal use water more efficiently and effectively, and the new technology available to cut wasteful consumption - saving residents money in the bargain. For those concerned about new home construction - at every level - impacting available the available water supply to people at all levels, this series of interviews could not be more germane. To come are two local contributors to the Courier, who also offer expanded, yet cogent discussions spawned and driven by their necessarily limited Courier articles on this topic. =======================================Liam's Website:https://www.liamjdillon.com/Liam's Emailliam.dillon@latimes.comGimme Shelter - Liam's extraordinary podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/gimme-shelter-the-california-housing-crisis-podcast/id1280087136Gimme Shelter Episode referred to in this episode, on this topic:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/gimme-shelter-can-california-build-millions-of-new/id1280087136?i=1000569598298
