For years, health systems have been holding their breath to see if patient volumes would finally return to pre-pandemic levels. Because—per conventional wisdom--if volumes return, then so will operating margins. Right? Not so fast. In this episode, host Abby Burns invites Advisory Board experts Sebastian Beckmann and Elizabeth Orr to explore why with the positive volume forecast we see in our projections won't automatically translate to a healthy financial outlook. Two weeks ago on Radio Advisory, we told our listeners that the number one area of focus for health system growth is operational excellence, and a major part of that is capturing all of the revenue on the table from your medical group. Healthcare organizations have spent the last decade buying up medical groups and physicians, in part because of the “promise” of downstream referrals. It is a long-held belief that physician employment leads to higher referral integrity. But according to an Advisory Board data analysis, that doesn't hold true - just 55% of total referral revenue attributed to employed PCPs is realized in-network. This week, host Rachel (Rae) Woods invites Advisory Board physician experts Eliza Dailey and Colleen Wagner to unpack where referral leakage actually happens and share the real (and relatively easy) steps organizations can take to reduce referral leakage. Value-based care has been dominating industry conversations in recent years. Here on Radio Advisory, we talk a lot about best practices, how to make the right investments, and how to best prepare leaders for the future of value-based care. In this episode, host Rachel (Rae) Woods invites Advisory Board value-based care expert Daniel Kuzmanovich and Optum Advisory Service's SVP of value-based care, Erik Johnson, to discuss the mindset shifts they think leaders should be making when pursuing a sustainable value-based care strategy. However, recognizing the practicalities of life after graduation, Sarah ventured into advertising as a Strategic Planner, where she discovered unexpected parallels of the design process and understanding consumer behavior - thinking about product use and the consumer's experince of them. In Seattle, Sarah was accepted to the two year Pottery Northwest residency program, the last group of residents to be guided by the delight that is Wally Bivens. The promise and potential of higher education remain popular in good economic times and bad. Even more popular is the prospect of not paying full price for a degree! Amy and Mike invited educator Dr. Kuni Beasley to reveal some colleges that offer the best scholarships and financial aid. What are five things you will learn in this episode? Why does college cost so much and what are the best ways to lower out-of-pocket costs? How can families find low-cost colleges? Which colleges offer the best financial aid? Which colleges offer automatic, easily accessible scholarships? How can one earn institutional scholarships regardless of family income? MEET OUR GUEST Dr. Kuni Michael Beasley, the founder of Beasley College Prep, has a BS from Texas Christian University (GO Frogs!), an MBA from Oklahoma City University, a Doctor of Ministry in Greek and Hebrew from Tyndale Seminary, and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Arlington.  He has been helping students prepare for college for over 40 years.  Dr. Beasley has helped students enroll in the top colleges in the country including Harvard, West Point, Stanford, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Pepperdine, and MIT, with many on full scholarships.   Dr. Beasley has an eclectic background.  After earning his undergraduate degree, he served on active duty with the Army where he was the youngest commander in Europe in charge of a nuclear Field Artillery unit.  When he returned to the US, he oversaw Officer Training and developed several novel training strategies that won him a medal for his efforts.  While on active duty, Dr. Beasley earned his master's degree in fifty weeks by attending classes at night.  He left active duty to take a position with the Federal Reserve Bank where he was a Training Specialist, Management Systems Coordinator, and Strategic Planner.  While there, he worked on the new currency and applied creative ideas to operations and check processing.  From there, Dr. Beasley was the International Management Consultant for Caltex Petroleum overseeing executive development and strategic training for executives in 55 countries.   Dr. Beasley left corporate America to pursue a personal passion to coach football.  In his first year as a high school football coach, Coach Beasley's team won the 1994 Texas AAA state championship.  He returned to coaching in 2021 and led his team to the state championship game again. Seeing that many students were under-challenged, in 1996, Dr. Beasley started his own school in a rented Sunday School room at the First Baptist Church in Duncanville, Texas, with seven students.  By 2009, there were 22 schools from Springfield, Massachusetts to Hot Springs, Arkansas, to Palm Springs, California.  He initiated a College Readiness business taking his unique preparation process to the public and private school students.  His SAT and ACT prep programs were used in public schools in nine states. Dr. Beasley taught college for sixteen years at several institutions to include Northwood University, Dallas Baptist University, University of Texas at Arlington, and thirteen years at LeTourneau University.  He is credentialed to teach at the graduate level in 14 subject areas to include Business, Political Science, Public Administration, Urban Studies, Economics, Psychology, Geography, and Military History.  His Ph.D. is in Urban and Public Administration where he wrote his dissertation on the transition of the Federal Reserve in the late 80's.  He earned his Doctor of Ministry in Greek and Hebrew studies concurrently with his Ph.D.  Very few can bring a portfolio with military command, championship coaching, academic achievement, college teaching, school administration, and the innovative entrepreneurship to build a nationwide business. In this episode of the Talk Podcast, we'll be diving into the importance of celebrating those mini wins and small steps in our business that ultimately lead to our biggest successes. As entrepreneurs, it's easy to get overwhelmed with all the tasks and lose track of our progress. In a previous episode, I introduced the concept of "progress trees," a resource to track our progress in manageable steps. Just like how we celebrate every milestone when teaching our kids to walk, we often forget to celebrate the small milestones in our business journey. Set up a project manager An effective strategy that we use here at Enever Group to track and celebrate our mini wins is to have a project manager that helps us break down overwhelming tasks into smaller, achievable steps. We also utilise resources like The Marketing Planner and The Strategic Planner to stay organised and focused. Celebrating mini wins: an example Let me give you an example from our recent experience. We were updating our event calendars, and along the way, we celebrated various mini wins. Finding the right tool for the job was a significant achievement. Then, we celebrated the cost-saving we achieved by choosing the new tool. Each step, like installing it successfully, setting up images, and adding events, was a cause for celebration. Your mini wins matter Whether you're just starting in business or are well-established, remember that every small achievement is significant. Don't expect immediate success, instead, break your tasks into small chunks and celebrate each milestone. It can be as simple as ticking off your to-do list or treating yourself to something you enjoy. Future planning and reviewing results In addition to celebrating mini wins, it's crucial to focus on future planning and reviewing the results of your efforts. Create quarterly marketing plans and goals, and use tools like Metricool, Meet Edgar, Google Analytics, and VidIQ to assess your content's impact. Join our celebration Inside the Business, Business, Business Facebook Gropu, we have a weekly "yay and win" day, where we share and celebrate our wins, no matter how big or small. MAJ John Spencer (USA-Ret.) is the Chair of Urban Warfare Studies with the Madison Policy Forum. He served over twenty-five years in the U.S. Army as an infantry Soldier, with two combat tours in Iraq as both an Infantry Platoon Leader and Company Commander. He has also served as a Ranger Instructor with the Army’s Ranger School, a Joint Chief of Staff and Army Staff intern, fellow with the Chief of Staff of the Army’s Strategic Studies Group, and Strategic Planner and Deputy Director of the Modern War Institute, where he was instrumental in the design and formation of the institute. In today’s interview, MAJ Spencer returns to discuss what we’ve learned about LSCO, urban conflict, and the changing character of warfare from the last four plus months of Russia’s “special military operation” in eastern Ukraine. The following bullet points highlight key insights from our interview: Modern technology forces our societies, and those of our adversaries, to be more connected to the battlefield. As the Ukrainian “Tik-Tok” war demonstrates, such connectedness can allow actors outside of the war to leverage open-source intelligence to influence the conflict by providing either side with logistical support and operational advice. It is important to study wars firsthand to understand how they are evolving to the modern context; the U.S. military used to employ appointed observers for this mission. Given that the battle for Kyiv is a truly urban fight, there is much the Army can learn from the conflict. The battle for Kyiv demonstrates that, especially in an urban environment, terrain still matters. Ukrainians flooded rivers and destroyed bridges to canalize Russian invaders into chokepoints and kill zones, demonstrating an understanding of their environment unthinkable to non-natives. The Russian invasion also demonstrates the importance of civilian involvement in urban conflict, as volunteers collaborated to establish defenses in depth, targeting and ambushing their attackers. Here, too, technology played an important role. Images and messages from the Ukrainian government and their fellow citizens helped strengthen citizens’ resolve to defend their country. Today, Soldiers and their families are more connected by technology than ever, allowing them to live with a foot in each world. This feature of modern warfare is important as it prevents Soldiers from feeling isolated, but also gives civilian families a clearer understanding of the realities of warfare. What are we missing? Preston and Sayre are joined today with John Spencer–one of the world's leading scholars and experts in the field of urban warfare. He has studied, taught, and written about urban warfare for over a decade. John is the creator of The Mini-Manual for the Urban Defender and currently serves as the Chair of Urban Warfare Studies with the Madison Policy Forum. He recently served as the Chair of Urban Warfare Studies at the Modern War Institute at West Point, Co-Director of the Urban Warfare Project, and host of the Urban Warfare Project podcast. This was a great conversation coming from a scholar and warrior with first hand experiences on both fronts as Spencer has one of the most infantry resumes possible. Serving over twenty-five years in the active Army as an infantry soldier, Spencer has held ranks from Private to Sergeant First Class and Second Lieutenant to Major. His assignments as an Army officer included two combat deployments to Iraq as both an Infantry Platoon Leader and Company Commander, a Ranger Instructor with the Army's Ranger School, a Joint Chief of Staff and Army Staff intern, fellow with the Chief of Staff of the Army's Strategic Studies Group, and Co-Founder, Strategic Planner, and Deputy Director of the Modern War Institute at West Point. We hope you enjoy.

He has also served as a Ranger Instructor with the Army’s Ranger School, a Joint Chief of Staff and Army Staff intern, fellow with the Chief of Staff of the Army’s Strategic Studies Group, and Strategic Planner and Deputy Director of the Modern War Institute where he was instrumental in the design and formation of the institute. In today’s interview, MAJ John Spencer (USA-ret.) discusses the on-going war in Ukraine, urban warfare strategies employed by both Russian and Ukrainian military forces, the changing character of warfare, and what this portends for the future of conflict. The following bullet points highlight key insights from our interview: Both with respect to the current Russia/Ukraine conflict and with modern conflict in general, urban warfare strategies are critical. This is true whether the objective requires getting past urban terrain or involves an objective that is urban in nature. Despite Russia’s initial plans falling in line with traditional invasions, characterized by a large mass of forces that are then rapidly deployed in a “shock and awe” campaign, Ukraine’s combined arms approach to defense has prevented Russia from quickly gaining control of critical areas. Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs) and Man-Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS) have been very effective in this conflict due to Russia trading combined arms operations for speed. Russia’s rush to seize ground objectives in convoy without effectively utilizing their air superiority has led to many of their ground assets being destroyed. It is tough to find a recent battle where an urban area was not the strategic or decisive objective. As Antony Beevor once stated, “The age of combined arms maneuver on the open plain is over.” The conflict in Ukraine is challenging the idea that urban fighting can be bypassed. The Russia/Ukraine conflict is sending a clear reminder to the U.S. and allied forces that many of the lessons we’ve learned in the past— using combined arms in urban warfare, the dangers of emitting large Electronic Warfare (EW) signatures, and the importance of Command and Control — are all still relevant on the battlefield today. Information from around the world can be received in the combat zone and directly influence on-going kinetic operations. When Mr. Spencer observed the call for Ukrainian civilians to be added to the military force structure, he wrote a series of tweets on the most basic things civilian auxiliary forces could do to help in defending their nation (i.e., installing barricades at choke points along probable axes of advance to deter/halt Russian forces). He received videos proving that Ukrainian civilians had put his advice to good use, demonstrating that the information age is changing the character of war. Ukraine is capable of winning in urban warfare, because they do not have to actually defeat the enemy’s military power. In this

My guest today is Graham North, creator and head of Brand Camp at the iconic ad agency of Goodby, Silverstein, and Partners, the team behind Got Milk and many memorable campaigns. Graham just won “Strategic Planner of the Year,” and Jeff Goodby has said, “Graham is spearheading a new way of thinking and approach to clients' problems.”  But what excites me the most about talking with Graham is how he can bring a group of people together to focus on the present moment. He cares deeply about holding space and real human connection. He's taken that passion for connection and created not just an incredible career for himself, but a novel and inspiring way of thinking about how we make meaning. Graham has two interwoven projects we talk about today, Brand Camp and Real Talk. Brand Camp is an intensive program for companies to find their “North Star” and shift operations to focus on the tangible, results-oriented core of their business. Real Talk is a card game about getting to the heart of things, whether that's in a team at work or a group of folks at a party. While these projects might seem lighthearted, there's a brilliant core of meaning and depth. I hope you enjoy this conversation with my friend Graham North.

Kristine Oller guides successful creative professionals through the process of designing and aligning the next chapter of their lives and careers – always with an eye towards helping them expand their brilliance and increase their resilience. She is here to discuss a rather tricky topic for creatives: having enough money to really pursue your career. Sure you can get that stereotypical job waiting tables, but is that really going to fuel you, or stress you out more? What would it look like to have a truly amazing side business that gave you the resources you need (and more) to fully pursue your dream, and to lose the desperation of needing to book a role to make rent? And Kristine was in this exact position: working jobs that drained her, and she found something else that helped her thrive. Yes, she does have a course (link below), but this is not an hour-long sales pitch; we don't even mention the course! This is a fun and important conversation about how to sustain yourself as a creative until you get your next break, and the one after that and the one after that!
