Chuck Todd breaks down the Texas primary results and finds a political landscape that should terrify the Republican establishment. Ken Paxton and John Cornyn are headed to a runoff on the GOP side, but the headline number is stunning: Democrats posted a higher overall vote total than Republicans in the Texas primary, a seismic signal in what has long been the country's biggest red state. He credits Talarico's viral Colbert moment with giving him a massive boost, notes that Latino voters broke decisively for Talarico over Jasmine Crockett — who ran an unconventional campaign and is unlikely to concede quickly — and argues that a Paxton vs. Talarico general election would genuinely put Texas in play. He walks through the strategic calculus: history favors Paxton in a runoff, Cornyn has outperformed polling but a Cornyn nomination would draw less national Democratic investment in the race, and Democrats should have the budget to compete in Texas regardless — because Texas is "nice to have" for Democrats but "must have" for Republicans, and if Democrats win even once there, it opens the floodgates. He also flags Dan Crenshaw losing after failing to secure Trump's endorsement, the razor-thin two-vote margin for the state senate campaign in North Carolina, and a broader pattern of bad developments piling up for the GOP — capped by Trump stoking voter skepticism with an unpopular Iran war. His verdict: this is the worst possible start to an election cycle for Republicans, because it's easy to start a war and very hard to end one. Then, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Josh Seftel joins the Chuck Toddcast to discuss All the Empty Rooms, his devastating Netflix documentary short that chronicles the untouched bedrooms of children killed in school shootings since Sandy Hook. Seftel describes a country that has grown numb to over 100 school shootings just this year — where the reporting cycle moves on before victims' stories can truly be told — and explains how the simple, visceral act of standing in a dead child's bedroom forces viewers to feel something that statistics never could. He reveals that many parents have kept these rooms exactly as their children left them, preserving even the smell, creating what amounts to sacred spaces frozen in time.Chuck draws the parallel to the decision to show Emmett Till's open casket, and Seftel argues these painful stories must be told regardless of how uncomfortable they make us, because imagery can be more powerful than the spoken word. What makes the film's approach so striking — and so strategically effective — is what it leaves out. The word "gun" is never mentioned, a deliberate choice to avoid triggering the political reflexes that shut down conversation before it starts. And it's working: Seftel shares that a Second Amendment enthusiast changed his mind after seeing the photos of empty rooms, and even a Sandy Hook denier reached out after watching. The film's funders didn't want to make money — they wanted to make change — and Netflix's global distribution has given it a massive reach. Seftel says the conversation has to start with one simple question — "How do we keep kids safe at school?" — and that the film intentionally got better as it got shorter, stripping away prescription and polemic to let the silence of those rooms do the work. We'll be back on March 15 with an all-new season of How God Works! In the meantime, we're excited to share one of our favorite episodes — our very first live event. If you ask people what they think about religion, you often get one of two answers: Religion is the source of war, violence, abuse, and hypocrisy OR a route to love, kindness, tolerance, and mercy.Put another way, it's either what divides us or it's the thing that can actually bring us together. In a country deeply divided over social, political, and moral issues that seems to be moving further apart by the day, the answer's not likely to be a simple one. How God Works held its first live event in December to explore just that. Why does something that has the potential to connect us so deeply also have the ability to divide us so profoundly? And, regardless of what we believe, is there something we can learn from what religion gets right to find a way to come together? In a wide-ranging and often moving discussion, Dave spoke to a panel of leading spiritual thinkers and social scientists who have experienced both sides of the issue, including Central Synagogue Rabbi Angela Buchdahl, award-winning author and Christian Historian Diana Butler Bass, The University of North Carolina's Deepest Beliefs Lab director Kurt Gray, and The Aspen Institute's Religion and Society Program's executive director Simran Jeet Singh.

This Vermont Conversation was originally published on Nov. 23, 2022.Santa Claus is coming to town. But the person shimmying down the chimney may not be the rotund, bearded white man who has long played the role of St. Nick.“Santa Camp” is a new documentary from HBO Max about an effort to diversify who represents Santa Claus. The story begins at the annual summer camp of the New England Santa Society, which represents more than 100 Christmas performers. The Santas realized that they need to look more like some of the communities that they serve. So they welcomed three new Santas: Chris Kennedy, a Black Santa from Arkansas; Levi Truex, aka Trans Santa, from Chicago; and “Santa Fin” Ciappara, a Santa with spina bifida who communicates via an iPad, joined by his mother Suki Ciappara, both from Barre.Santa Fin always dreamed of being Santa in a parade. The movie captures the day in December 2021 when his dream came true and he sat in a sled pulled by elves in the River of Light parade in Waterbury. “Believe in your dreams and don't give up,” he said. "Be kind to people who are different."For some, diversity is a threat. Kennedy set up an illuminated, inflatable Black Santa Claus display in his yard. Soon after, he received a racist letter. That motivated him to become Black Santa. “You're not going to steal my joy,” he told The Vermont Conversation. "I'm appealing to families who want diversity and want to see themselves represented or their adoptive kids want to see themselves represented. That's what I'm here for. I'm not here for the naysayers,” Kennedy said said. The documentary showed the “Proud Boys” protesting Trans Santa Levi Truex outside the Chicago church where he was greeting children last year. Truex talked about violence directed against LGBTQ+ people, which continues to rise. The FBI reported that 2023 was the second year in a row that more than 1 in 5 of all hate crimes were motivated by anti-LGBTQ+ bias.“We've always experienced hate. It's what makes us resilient. It's what makes us get louder and push harder,” he said. “The more that we feel the pressure from the hate, the more we're just going to be even more visible and more open. It's just what needs to happen.”Truex believes that Trans Santa makes a difference, especially for the LGBTQ+ children who visit him. “I don't have an agenda to make your kids trans or whatever. My agenda is purely to spread joy and just be a good person, to be a good human. And to treat people with respect and dignity and just spread the love of Christmas,” he said.

The bullet that nearly took Donald Trump's life has clearly changed the man painted by the media as a selfish and bullish billionaire. Before the world, President Trump spoke at the Republican National Convention softly and calmly, bridging a gap to voters desperate for a courageous leader who loves America and wants to lift up her people. As word spreads of Joe Biden's alleged withdrawal from the race as soon as this weekend, Trump accepts the Republican nomination with the largest lead yet over the incumbent president.
Reageren? What's the deepest connection that can be forged that can unite us across cultures and continents? Let's challenge the narratives of division perpetuated by the media and society. In a world seemingly torn apart by race, gender, geographical boundaries, and superficial affiliations, this episode explores the profound unity that can be found through a special connection offered by Jesus. In Romans chapter 15, Paul encourages the church to maintain her unity once again. It turns out, this was quite a challenge for early Christians. I'll give you some examples of what was happening in the local congregations… The church in Galatia was known for its legalism. The church in Corinth was divided because some were tolerating the kind of sins that many unbelievers didn't tolerate. The church in Pergamum was splitting because Christians were marrying pagans and it appears their pagan gods were being introduced. Many of Paul's letters aim at preventing division due to doctrinal perversion. Some scholars believe that the church in Rome was the most fragmented of all. Primarily, because it existed in the heart of the Roman Empire at a time when Christianity was out of favor. Nero was torturing Christians and some researchers say that early Christian martyrs were turned over to Nero by other Christians. The motivation behind this was envy, jealousy and rivalry. Churches have been known to divide over the smallest and most insignificant matters. So it's little wonder that three times Jesus prayed for our unity. The request came at a remarkable time in his life. We don't wake up knowing when we are going to die. Jesus did. He knew exactly how much time he had. What does he do with his last 24 hours? He spends time instructing his disciples and he prays. More than once, he prays for our oneness. Paul urges the strong not to become a stumbling block to the weak by exercising liberties that might cause the weak to stumble. If they are walking in love, the strong will gladly surrender the exercise of their liberties for the good of the weak. The benefits our liberties offer are so small, and the blessings for limiting our liberties are so great that this should not be an agonizing decision. There's an aphorism you might be familiar with: “Might makes right.” What this refers to is society's view of what is right is determined by those in power. The Christian ethic upends this. Those who are strong have an obligation to the weak. They are not to victimize the weak but to come to their aid. All for the sake of unity.
Whether it was on the Selma bridge, in Cairo, the stadiums of South Africa, the legislative chambers of England and India, or the executive halls of America, President Obama strove to reshape the mores of a globalized society away from separation, extremism, oppression, and bigotry towards a politic that stood for not only human rights, but also an understanding that rights can only be fostered through a sort of collective understanding of agency and responsibility that opened the door to future possibilities. Most importantly, President Obama not only acted as Uniter in Chief during a time of social unrest, racial tension, and turmoil, he also was the main leader for tumultuous social reform that brought the United States of America out of the worst recession from 2008-2011 since the Great Depression. Additionally, President Obama acted not only as a social reformer, but also as an advocate for political and social democracy through the period of the Arab Spring. Through his reform efforts and advocacy, he provided an inherent meaning to millions in the Arab world with aspirations towards self-determination for democratic governance while also navigating and espousing equality for millions in America on the question of economic inequality through the Occupy Wall Street Movement that started in 2011 as well as highlighting racial inequality that was brought to the forefront of American political reality through the Black Lives Matter Movement that was founded during his presidency in 2013.
The Uniter-in-Chief delivered the annual State of the Union address last week. We share our takeaways from that speech and the reaction to it. Out west in California, Katie Porter joins the likes of Stacey Abrams and other election-denying Democrats in claiming her failed Senate bid was "rigged." Was it? Or is she just unpopular? In economic news, we discuss Joe Biden's $7T budget, inflation and the likelihood of rate cuts, plus the return of earmarks. And then, finally, we wrap up with some climate change alarmism, because why not? Season 18, Episode 16: Set Review (Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth) Morde and Manacymbal join forces to analyze the best Modern cards from Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth. Very few of these cards seem flashy enough for 2023 Modern, but heed Tolkien's advice: all that is gold does not glitter. A brave little hobbit, such as Rosie Cotton of South Lane, might have the right stats to enable a new infinite combo, and the interactive value provided by Orcish Bowmasters gets more powerful in older formats. A legendary land cycle has generous activated abilities, and Equipment decks get a new toy in Forge Anew. Will any of these cards break in to the brutally powerful Modern meta? Let's find out! If you ask people what they think about religion, you often get one of two answers: Religion is the source of war, violence, abuse, and hypocrisy OR a route to love, kindness, tolerance, and mercy. Put another way, it's either what divides us or it's the thing that can actually bring us together. This podcast episode is an audio recording of the event in its entirety. If you'd rather watch than listen, a video of the event is available here.
Pastor Bob was honored last week by receiving the Uniter award from The White House. The “Uniter” award was presented to select Americans for working to bring their communities together across lines of religious, political and other differences to prevent acts of hate-fueled violence, promote healing where such violence has had devastating consequences, and build unity. So, it is fitting that on this week's Journal Session - Pastor Bob details out what the Bible says about being a peacemaker, a uniter, a bridge builder and why this type of work is important during this moment in time. Take a listen. Show Notes: Bob Roberts presented with Uniter Award from White House Bold Love Podcast Website About Bob Roberts Jr GlocalNet Website
Today's show rundown: How much of a mess can the Democrats create and blame it on the republicans? Mid terms are close, and Biden is making speeches in front of his red wall with Marines flanking him. How can you have screwed up the country these past 2 years, but claim that anyone who voted for Trump is a terrorist. Biden mentioned Maga Republicans 13 times. There is polling data telling The Left they need to keep Trump in the news. If they keep Trump top of people's mind, they have nothing without Trump. If the Democrats will lie to us about Jan 16th, and how Maga Republicans killed multiple people...what will they NOT lie to you about. They re trying to portray the term conservative as radical...this makes no sense...conservatives by definition want to maintain...not change. The Maga Republicans are not a danger to this country, they are a danger to the Democrats. These crazy left people are saying that it was the Republicans that closed down the schools for voting / during the election, and it was them who opened everything back up. The Democratic Party is betting on two things....one - that you are stupid, and two - that you will take the information the main stream media feeds you, and believe it is truth. They really think you are stupid. The Judges order from the Mar a Lago raid says that Biden is the one who had requested the documents in question, but didn't Biden tell us he found out about raid on TV like the ret of us? Mark takes us back to the COVID Vaccine - from the 2nd month that COVID was on the radar we at BFT have said there would not be a vaccine.
Joe Biden delivered his most alert, coherent speech in years...possibly ever. Unfortunately he's only on his A game when he's impersonating a dictator and declaring war on half the country. The White House is responding to relentless Republican charges that it wants to "defund the police" by embracing the message that there are, in fact, politicians angling to starve law enforcement of needed money: congressional Republicans. The White House launched the counteroffensive as advisers push to shore up President Joe Biden's low approval on crime and fight an attack that could damage Democrats in the midterm elections next year.
The boom that North Carolina has experienced in the past 12 years has been due to the fiscal reforms enacted by the GOP after it won the legislature in 2010. Until then, Democrats had controlled state government (and most local ones) since Reconstruction. Their record of low taxes and high growth have earned them the legislative majorities they hold. Last night in Pennsylvania, President Joe Biden delivered a rambling, confusing, and confused speech where he tried to rebrand the Democratic Party as the party of law enforcement. He accused Republicans of inciting violence by criticizing the raid and search of Donald Trump's Florida home. He also alleged that his "MAGA friends" were supporting the people who stormed the US Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
