PUBLIC VERSION. Comedy writer Mike Scollins (LATE NIGHT WITH SETH MEYERS, SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey so far. From his post-college days taking sketch and improv classes at Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB)… to the importance of finding his “people” and how those early relationships ultimately provided him with an opportunity to prove himself… to his very first paid gig writing jokes for a conservative talk show… to working as a guest writer on SNL for a season… to landing a spot on Seth Meyers' staff for LATE NIGHT… to the various things that can go wrong with table reads… to the hurdles of writing political satire during a time period where reality and common sense have gone out the window and the real-life cast of political characters is already saying and doing things too ridiculous to believe in the first place… to the importance of learning how to resist “punching down”… to what it's been like writing and performing for a nightly comedy show during the pandemic where he couldn't physically be in the writers room, couldn't be on set for every show taping, and couldn't have a live audience to react to the jokes… Scollins and the guys get extremely candid as they share their personal experiences from the development trenches with one another. The boys nerd out over their love of horror/comedies, Green and Scollins discover that they share something very special from their High School theater days, and Dr. Arwen gives one of the very best “Hollywood Therapy” sessions of her career when she provides emotional support to a filmmaker who feels ready to tap out on his dream. Or pigging out on some delicious street food. He studied at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, FAMU International in Prague, Czech Republic, Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB), and recently completed a 5 year training with teacher Stephen Book. His work spotlights underrepresented communities, and he splits his time working on thought-provoking, moving, socially relevant narratives and absurdist comedy pieces. He is currently developing a feature film about a trans-American road trip exploring a surrogate father-daughter relationship against the backdrop of America's current border and immigration crisis. Nardeep is also an accomplished actor. His recent credits include 911, SWAT, The Odd Couple, and recurring roles on Jane the Virgin and The Bold and the Beautiful. He is currently recurring on Legendary Entertainment and the Nerdist's show Orbital Redux, a revolutionary Sci-Fi show filmed and aired live, and is a heavy recurring on the Disney animated show Mira, Royal Detective, where he voices more than 10 characters. Check out Nardeep's IMBD and his new film (currently in preproduction) Land of Gold! Help crowdfund Land of Gold here: http://www.landofgoldfilm.com/ and https://seedandspark.com/fund/landofgold#wishlist. On this episode you will hear about: Nardeep talks about his film, Land of Gold (how the idea came to him, and why he chose this subject). How going on instinct sometimes helps you to be faster and more efficient. Why journaling is a critical tool for the creative process. The reasons you should create a project "bible" when you are creating anything (products, services, marketing campaigns, films, etc.). Why pen and paper is still the best medium, and why you should just keep scribbling your ideas down until you feel "ready." How to get feedback from your trusted advisors. Nardeep will give you the secret sauce for boosting your own creative energy and using your imagination.b Why you should never delete anything (when you're being creative). How improv can help you to be more creative and stay in the present moment. Why ultimately you need to just put your shit out there (perfection is the enemy of done). Nardeep and I get pretty deep, giving you some philosophy and motivation to get your projects going. Production Credits: The Self Made Strategies Podcast is a SoftStix Productions LLC jawn. Gargs Allard catches up with stand-up comedian and actor Brittany Brave. They discuss her personal history, current projects and the art of comedy. Bio from http://brittanybrave.com (brittanybrave.com): Brittany Brave is a NYC-based comedian, actress, writer, producer and host. Born in New Jersey and raised in Miami, Florida, Brave used these unfortunate facts to develop a line of comedy that is as animated as it is cerebral. Having both trained and performed at Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB), iO, Second City, The People's Improv Theater, Magnet Theatre, SAK Comedy Lab, Impromedy Miami and more of the world's leading schools, Brave has accumulated more than 15 years of on-stage experience with a focus on improv and sketch comedy. In 2017, Brave began to perform stand-up and was quickly named an Emerging Talent by TBS Network at the New York Comedy Festival, and two short years later (2019), the festival selects Brave to perform on their Best New Talent showcase at Caroline's on Broadway. In addition to Caroline's, Brave performs stand-up comedy nightly at Broadway Comedy Club, Gotham Comedy Club, Greenwich Village Comedy Club, LOL Comedy Club, Stand Up NY, Yonkers Comedy Club, Lucy's Laugh Lounge and more. She celebrated her first tour in fall of 2018 with LA-based comedian Josh Novey (Jay Leno, Amazon Prime). The two performed original comedy on the Nobody's Happy Comedy Tour, traveling cross the Northeast U.S., raising money for Stronger Than Stigma, a non-profit organization advocating for mental health awareness. Not only an acclaimed performer, but an accomplished producer, Brave runs two critically acclaimed, monthly comedy show's Improvised Tarot at QED Astoria and Rock Candy at Rockwood Music Hall. Rock Candy is the venue's only original stand-up comedy series and has welcomed the likes of Mark Normand, Harrison Greenbaum, Sean Donnelly and more, as well as praise from The New York Times for being a must-see weekend comedy event. Brave has made appearances on TBS, MTV, Sirius XM, The Jerry O. Show and The Wendy Williams Show, and local networks like NYC's BRIC TV and BalconyTV, in which she was the on-camera personality for the Manhattan and Brooklyn branches of the series from 2016-2018. Her comedy, specifically her material on gender dynamics and abuse, has been praised by ELLE Magazine, Ashton Kutcher's A-Plus, sheBOOM and Ciao Magazine. Brave, a survivor and open advocate for domestic violence awareness, co-hosted and produced the podcast, Violently Funny. She also launched and runs Cat Call (@wearecatcall), a live platform and organization committed to advancing female leadership and camaraderie. The organization has established partnerships with Bumble, Sofar Sounds, Deep Eddy Vodka, SassClass and more. Brave does all this and is still somehow only 4'11? What a crime.
