Why does Vladimir Putin often say that the West is conspiring to weaken Russia? Historian James Crossland traces this narrative back to a British intelligence officer and a failed assassination attempt on Vladimir Lenin in 1918. The story is featured in his new book, Rogue Agent, from Secret Plots to Psychological Warfare, the Untold Story of Robert Bruce Lockhart. James takes us into Lockhart's psyche and lays out how a single moment in the dying days of Czarist Russia helped fuel a century of paranoia and rifts. Welcome back, ragers, to another explosive episode of History Rage! Today, host Paul Bavill is joined by Professor of International History at Liverpool John Moores University, Dr. James Crossland. James, the author of "Rogue Agent," returns to rage against the myth of British intelligence infallibility during the tumultuous period at the end of the Great War. Raging Against the Myth: Dr. James Crossland takes us through the intricate web of British intelligence operations in 1918 Russia, debunking the myth that British spies were infallible, and instead revealing a chaotic and often incompetent reality.Robert Bruce Lockhart: Explore the life of Lockhart, a young and ambitious British agent tasked with navigating the perilous political landscape of post-revolutionary Russia. The Lockhart Plot: Dive into the covert operation aimed at overthrowing the Bolsheviks, involving a mix of British, American, and French conspirators, and a plan that ultimately ends in disaster.Soviet Counterintelligence: Understand the role of the Cheka, the Soviet secret police, in outsmarting British intelligence and turning the plot into a propaganda victory for the Bolsheviks.Post-War Career and Legacy:Depression and Recovery: Lockhart's struggles with depression in the 1920s and his eventual return to prominence as a journalist and best-selling author.World War II Contributions: Lockhart's role in the Political Warfare Executive, where he helped shape British propaganda efforts against Nazi Germany.Lessons Unlearned: How the failures of the Lockhart Plot foreshadowed future intelligence blunders during the Cold War, such as the Bay of Pigs and the Cambridge Five.Guest Information:James Crossland's book: "Rogue Agent"Follow James on Twitter: @DRrJCrossland.Don't forget to leave a review for History Rage on Apple, Podchaser, Amazon, or wherever you can! Phil reacts to the emerging story of a possible new British political scandal. Having come to power partly because Boris Johnson fell foul of Britain's tough Covid rules, did our current Prime Minister break them too and, if so, should it even matter? Phil's article from 2022 is also relevant here. https://thecritic.co.uk/im-done-with-po-faced-politicians/Then writer James Crossland joins Phil to discuss his fascinating and exciting book about one of the most dramatic - and scandalous - British spy stories of all time.Sir Robert Bruce Lockhart was an impressive figure: a diplomat, intelligence agent, conspirator, journalist and propagandist who played a key role in both world wars. He was a man who charmed his way into the confidences of everyone from Leon Trotsky to Anthony Eden. A man whom the influential press baron Lord Beaverbook claimed ‘could well have been prime minister'. Lockhart placed himself at the centre of world changing event during the Russian Revolution - and very nearly died as a consequence. Yet he died almost forgotten and near destitute, a footnote in the pages of history. You can buy James' book, and all the books we feature on the podcast here in our special Scandal Mongers shop, along with thousands of others...https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/rogue-agent-the-troubled-life-and-dangerous-times-of-robert-bruce-lockhart-james-crossland/7624180?aid=12054&ean=9781783968046&Please follow James here...https://x.com/DrJCrossland***We now have a Thank You button (next to the 'three dots') for small donations that help support our work***Looking for the perfect gift for a special scandalous someone - or someone you'd like to get scandalous with? British actress and producer Gemma Arterton has led a long-running and diverse acting career, with many roles to her name. She made her film debut in the 2007 comedy St Trinian's and made her mark in the 2008 blockbuster Quantum of Solace as a Bond Girl. Since then, she's gone on to star in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Clash of the Titans, The King's Man, and Rogue Agent - and she stars in the TV series Funny Woman. Her newest role sees her playing a budding actress being blackmailed by a powerful critic in the 1930's-set thriller The Critic. She says she was drawn to the role when she first got word of it - and working with Sir Ian McKellen was a 'privilege'. "It was one of the biggest privileges of my whole life, really, working with him - so it was a no-brainer, really." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Robert Bruce Lockhart was one of the most extraordinary and unconventional agents of the 20th century. A British diplomat, spy, and propagandist, his life was one of scandal and deception - from the jungles of Malaysia to the streets of Moscow, he bore witness to some of history's most pivotal moments. He even took part in a plot to kill Vladimir Lenin and bring down the Communist regime.Today we're joined by James Crossland, Professor of International History at Liverpool John Moores University and author of 'Rogue Agent'. James tells us how this gifted yet flawed character went from a teenage upstart to a crucial Cold War intermediary and a master of psychological warfare.Produced by James Hickmann and edited by Dougal Patmore.Enjoy unlimited access to award-winning original documentaries that are released weekly and AD-FREE podcasts. Today it's the story of Charles and Heather Maude, a young ranch family in Southwest South Dakota that have found themselves indicted for theft of federal property over 25 acres of National Grass Lands that had been a part of this 5th generation ranch family since 1910. Rachel Gabel, spokesperson for the Maude family, is my guest as we unpack this story. In 55 days from a normal and civil meeting on May 1st with a Forest Service District Ranger and a US Forest Service special agent over decades old boundary discrepancies, the Maudes, out of the blue, found themselves summoned to appear in US District Court. They were separately indicted with a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison and fined up to $250,000 each. So, what happened here? What are the details behind this story? Why has there been little to no information made available by the Forest Service as to why they escalated this issue quickly without trying to find resolution? Why is it alarming to all of us in production agriculture? Is this reflective of the US Forest Service or a rogue district office and agent in South Dakota? Planet Poet-Words in Space – NEW PODCAST! LISTEN to my WIOX show (originally aired August 16, 2022) featuring Canadian poet Lisa Richter who reads from and discusses her poetry collection Nautilus and Bone, winner of the National Jewish Book Award for Poetry, the Canadian Jewish Literary Award for Poetry, and the Robert Kroetsch Award for Poetry. Pamela Manché Pearce, Planet Poet's endlessly interesting and erudite Poet-At-Large, also joins us on the show! Lisa Richter is a Canadian poet, writer and educator. She is the author of two books of poetry, Closer to Where We Began (Tightrope Books, 2017), and Nautilus and Bone (Frontenac House, 2020), winner of the National Jewish Book Award for Poetry, the Canadian Jewish Literary Award for Poetry, and the Robert Kroetsch Award for Poetry. Her poems have been nominated for Best of the Net and a National Magazine Award, and appeared in numerous publications and anthologies, including The Literary Review of Canada, CV2, The Malahat Review, The New Quarterly, Rogue Agent and Crab Creek Review. She lives and writes in Toronto. Canadian Jewish Literary Awards: "Nautilus and Bone (Frontenac House) by Lisa Richter is a poetic tour de force. It is a reclamation project of Jewish literary history as well as an act of radical empathy. A reimagining of the unconventional life of the celebrated Yiddish poet, Anna Margolin, this collection has all the ambition, romance, and ferocity of its subject, a moving exploration of how a wild spirit searches for beauty and love. We return to it with pleasure and admiration." National Jewish Book Award for Poetry: “In Nautilus and Bone, Lisa Richter races around the life and work of Yiddish-language poet Anna Margolin (1887 – 1952) until her “words are wilding.” The poetry supersedes the mere biographical and showcases the triumphs of the genre: in forms including sonnet crowns, centos, and homophonic translations, Richter keeps up with Margolin's escapades from Brisk to the Lower East Side. Poems such as “Flew the Peacock Off-Golden” combine iconic themes of Yiddish poetry with Richter's exuberant syntax: “above sleep I became the peacock/my restless eye flew away you bow.” Language flaunts itself across history — with epigraphs ranging from Lorca to Lizzo, the collection memorializes Margolin's legacy across time. Richter's exhilarating achievement doesn't merely bring Margolin to life — it dares the reader to live as fully as Margolin.”

With the widest release ever for an animated feature, DC League of Superpets takes £2.6m in the #1 spot. James found it consistently funny for young and old alike. He thought Netflix's true-life spy tale Rogue Agent with Gemma Arterton and James Norton gripping but was less impressed with Amazon Prime's true story Prizefighter: The Life of Jem Belcher. GoldenEye: Rogue Agent was truly a game for James Band fanatics. Some say it was meant ONLY for James Bond fanatics. Overall, the game didn't receive the best reviews, it really wasn't a bad game. Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

While James Bond going rogue was once a novelty, it's been a bit overused in the last few films.
In this episode of The Long View, I'm pleased to be joined by Jason Albert as we discuss the Chad Jensen classic game of Combat Commander: Europe. Along the way, we discuss what makes this game so unique, and the many expansions it has spawned since it was first released. Is this a wargame for you? Listen and find out! As a bonus, I review Rogue Agent and Fleet: Arctic Bounty at the end of the show. Is Rogue Agent your ticket to Blade Runner inspired fun, or is it a bust? What does Arctic Bounty add to the base game of Fleet? Is it worth picking up, or just expansion bloat? Tune in and find out! As an episode note, I have to warn that there was a slight Skype problem during the first segment of the show that creates a backgound hiss. Filtering did not work for this particular case, but I felt it was slight enough to not hold back the segment. Thanks for your patience! The Long View is a proud member of The Dice Tower Network. Check them out for a huge array of boardgame resources and podcasts! I also would like to thank my sponsor www.gamesurplus.com, your first, best choice for online game purchases. And thanks, of course, to YOU for listening!
