About This Episode: Del Bigtree is one of the preeminent voices of the vaccine risk awareness movement around the world. He is the founder of the non-profit, Informed Consent Action Network, and host of a rapidly growing internet talk show The HighWire, boasting over 33 million views to date. Del's multi-pronged approach incorporates legal, legislative, and media actions to expose the fraud, lies, and conflicts of interest that have allowed the pharmaceutical industry to evade standardized safety testing for vaccines. This collusion between government agencies and the pharmaceutical industry, now the most powerful lobby in Washington, has led to a dramatic increase in vaccine injuries, estimated to be as high as 5.9 million cases per year in the US alone. Despite mainstream media sources such as the New York Times and Washington Post blame so-called “Anti-Vaxxers” for the growing trend of vaccine hesitancy, Del has focused the spotlight on the real issue – the shocking lack of credible vaccine science. Del's foray into the vaccine issue was anything but intentional. After spending a decade celebrating great doctors, cutting edge surgeries and medical breakthroughs as a producer on The Dr. Phil Show and the CBS medical talk show, The Doctors, it was a routine investigation into the story of a whistleblower at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that catapulted Del into the vaccine debate. When every news agency in television, including The Doctors, refused to cover the story of Dr. William Thompson, a senior scientist at the CDC who had provided over 10,000 documents to support his claim that the agency had destroyed scientific evidence proving a connection between vaccines and autism, Del put his career on the line and left network television to make one of the most controversial documentaries in history: Vaxxed: From Cover-Up To Catastrophe. The film became a worldwide phenomenon when it was abruptly removed from the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival lineup under unprecedented pressure by the festival's medical sponsor, The Sloan Foundation. Del is now one of the most sought after public speakers in the natural health arena, often gathering audiences in the thousands who travel from around the world to be inspired by his unique blend of passion, wit, and scientific expertise. He has worked directly with the likes of Robert Kennedy Jr., Robert DeNiro, and Jenny McCarthy, and was an official member of the 2017 Kennedy Vaccine Safety Delegation at the National Institute of Health arranged by President Trump. He is the recipient of multiple awards including an Emmy Award as a producer on The Doctors, Best Drama at the New York Television Festival, and the Health Freedom Hero Award from the National Health Freedom Federation, the oldest natural health organization in America. He has appeared on several primetime news networks including ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX and has been interviewed by countless radio and Internet personalities ranging from Tom Hartman to David Knight of Infowars. Above all, Del is most fulfilled by his work with the brave mothers and fathers of vaccine injured children who are marching on state capitols around the nation to stop Big Pharma's push to forcibly inject every American citizen with vaccines, a product the Supreme Court has described as “unavoidably unsafe.” Find out more about Del at: The HighWire - https://thehighwire.com/ ICAN (Informed Consent Action Network) - https://www.icandecide.org/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/delbigtree The HighWire on Rumble - https://rumble.com/c/TheHighWire Check out our YouTube Channel: Jeremyryanslatebiz See the Show Notes: www.jeremyryanslate.com/959 Sponsors: LinkedIn Jobs: Post your first job for free linkedin.com/cyol MyPillow: Use the promo code: CYOL to get up to 60% off https://www.mypillow.com/ Audible: Get a free 30 day free trial and 1 free audiobook from thousands of available books. Katie Tibaldi is a writer, director and producer born and raised in Michigan. She also has the distinction of being childhood best friends with the host, April Wolfe! Between working on shows such as Broad City, Nurse Jackie and Damages, Katie's already worked on over 300 episodes of television. She’s currently producing the documentary feature Street Fighting Men, which will be distributed by First Run Features later this year. Her work on that made her a 2016 Sundance Institute Doc Fellow. She’s also Co-Producer on truTV's Emmy-Nominated comedy series, At Home With Amy Sedaris. She recently directed the independent half-hour comedy pilot, Ian Owes U, that had its world premiere at the New York Television Festival in July. She is also the writer, director and executive producer of Seeking Sublet, a comedy series with 9 full episodes debuting later this year. The series has been showcased by MovieMaker Magazine, Script Magazine, Tumblr and Funny or Die. The movie that Katie has chosen to discuss this week is the vampire mockumentary, What We Do in the Shadows. Katie and April discuss the improvisational style of the film and how it contrasts with that of Amy Sedaris on her show, At Home With Amy Sedaris. They also dissect the anatomy of comedy; how jokes can age badly, what makes a physical joke work, and grounding comedy in reality. Plus, they discuss vampire movies in general, and how even though something's been made a million time, it can be made unique by simply adding a personal touch. Pulling Your Hair Out: Conversations About The Writing Process
Growing up, Thomas Reyes' Filipino immigrant parents moved a lot. He attended seven different schools, and lived in Las Vegas for seven years, all by the time he was in middle school. As an only child, he could make friends easily, but sitcoms became his surrogate siblings. He attended UCLA and after graduating, instead of going to law school, he studied sitcom writing at UCLA Extension. He has held a variety of positions in both scripted and unscripted television and has written for ISAtv as well the BuzzFeed series Ask an Asian. He has also written for the Disney ABC Talent Showcase and the CBS Diversity Sketch Workshop. He was a semifinalist at the Austin Film Festival and New York Television Festival. He recently completed the Warner Bros. Television Writers’ Workshop and is currently Staff Writer on the upcoming half-hour dramedy American Woman which will premiere in early 2018 on the newly launched Paramount Network. "[The professor] tore my script apart. It was brutal but it was a great lesson in not being precious... It's fine. I can go back to the drawing board and I'll still have more ideas, I'll still have more pages to write." • Thomas Reyes on Twitter and his website • American Woman (Paramount Network) • Warner Bros. This interview was packed with great stories of how Greg brings to life the many projects he is working on, and shows you that you have to keep working on new things with good people to get ahead in the business. From shadowing Steve Levitan on Modern Family to pitching his project to executives at the CW network it was really amazing to hear all about Greg's experiences. There were many little morsels of advice for writers, but one thing is for certain Greg is great at keeping in touch with people he meets, keeping those connections, treating those around him with respect, and believes that hard work will pay off -- you just have to work on a lot of different projects. We mention several of Greg's works, including Worst Birthday Ever, Don't Tell Larry and Bad Dad. Worst Birthday Ever can be seen on CWSeed.com (you must download the app,) Don't Tell Larry is being screened October 11, 2017 at the Bahia Club in Echo Park, Los Angeles, and Bad Dad is being featured at the New York Television Festival, October 26, 2017 at the Helen Mills Theatre in Chelsea, New York.
My next guest is an old college friend of mine who has pursued her childhood dreams of becoming an actor. Nina Mehta is an actor, writer, and creative dreamer who turned her passion into her profession. As an ensemble member of the renowned theater and film production company, The Collective, she has appeared in numerous media productions, including being a regular cast member of The Amy Schumer Show. On this episode, we discuss her unlikely journey from being an environmental studies major to hustling her way into theater by following her dreams. We also discuss the challenges of being an actor as a minority, why artistry has always been in her family blood, and what it takes to break into a highly competitive industry. All this and more on today’s episode. Now, That’s Unusual. About Nina Mehta Growing up in northern New Jersey, Nina Mehta loved the creative arts. She was actively involved in theatre in high school, but stepped away from acting in college to pursue Environmental Studies at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. Mehta returned to New York after graduation and worked a ‘regular job,’ but the voice in her head kept calling her back to the performing arts. Mehta studied acting professionally under Terry Knickerbocker at the William Esper Studio from 2003-2005. She completed the two-year program in the evenings while working for Time Inc. With the economic downturn in 2008, she was laid off from her marketing job at Time – and serendipitously connected with The Collective NY, a newly formed performance ensemble comprised of other Esper Studio graduates. She began attending the group’s Collective Monday workshops, and became an official member of the troupe in March of 2009. Mehta’s first film, Finding Priya a Prom Date, won several short film awards on the 2008-2009 festival circuit, and she also appeared in The Call Center, an official pick at the 2009 New York Television Festival. She has played several roles on the sketch comedy show Inside Amy Schumer, and most recently appeared on Girls. Mehta continues to work with The Collective NY, serving as a writer, director, producer, and member of the permanent ensemble. Key Interview Takeaways The beauty of acting is in the storytelling. Mehta fell in love with drama watching television as a child because it opened up her imagination, and she found it creatively stimulating in that it could both act as a mirror of her own experience and introduce her to new people and experiences. Listen to that nagging little voice in your head. Mehta got away from theatre to pursue Environmental Studies in college, but once she had gotten comfortable in the working world, the nagging little voice in her head started calling her back – and she is grateful to have been relaxed enough to hear it! The more ‘of color’ you are, the tougher you have it in the world of theatre, film and television. Mehta recognizes that she has been lucky to have been cast in a number diverse roles. Acting requires a thick skin. You will hear ‘no’ more than ‘yes,’ so it is necessary to simply do your job well in the audition – and then let it go once you leave the room. 98% of casting involves elements that are out of your control. To prepare for an audition, read the script – a lot – with someone you trust and get feedback regarding how you come across. Mehta is trained in the Meisner technique, which suggests that how you say the lines on the page may change based on what your scene partner gives you in the moment. ‘Having the other person break up with you sometimes is helpful.’ Mehta had continued to work her day job while she studied acting, but being laid off in 2008 gave her the chance to pursue theatre full-time. This led to her involvement with The Collective and her friendship with a number of talented people, including Amy Schumer. Graduates of the William Esper Studio receive the parting advice to ‘create your own work’ as a way of taking control over one’s career,

I used to do bonus episodes of the show somewhat regularly called "Field Guides" where I'd talk to people about the actual steps they took to create a project or about a specific topic around the theme of creating things for a living. Like, I talked to Abbi and Ilana about how they actually made the Broad City webseries (back before it was even a TV show!) - and the idea is to try and demystify making TV, videos and other creative things on a professional level. Today on the show I talk to Terence Gray, the founder and executive director of the New York Television Festival, and Ian Thake, the director of programming for the festival. Founded in 2005, The NYTVF is a pioneer of the independent television movement, connecting its community of artists with leading networks, studios, agencies, production companies, and brands. Terence, Ian and I get in deep about the origins of the festival, how somebody starts a festival in the first place, as well as thoughts and tips on indie TV and the television development process! MILLENNIAL PARENTS is a creative collaboration between filmmakers Natalie Irby and Jake Greene. The weekly web series is inspired by Jake’s life as a defenseless new father. Jake Greene (Co-Director, Writer) has two boys under three years old. When he’s not pounding coffee or trying to keep his kids out of the street, he writes and develops television and web projects. Jake is also a Millennial author and keynote speaker. His first book, “Whoa, My Boss is Naked” was an irreverent career guide for entry-level Millennial employees. Now, as an entry-level Millennial parent, Jake doesn’t have time to write silly books so he makes silly videos instead. Natalie Irby (Co-Director, Director of Photography, Editor) is an award-winning filmmaker and an introverted rock band back-up vocalist. Through her production company, Corner to Corner Productions, Natalie seeks to direct and produce captivating dramatic content such as, “Almost Perfect” (director), an official selection of the Los Angeles Women’s International Film Festival, and also inspire progressive dialogue with films such as the documentary, “Will to Change” (executive producer), a collaboration with Blue Magnolia Films, which won the “Most Transformative Film” award at the 2014 Crossroads Film Festival. She enjoys writing screenplays and original scenes for actors as well. She is learning to “lighten up” through her involvement with comedic content, even engaging in laughter from time to time. Natalie and Jake’s previous collaboration, “Hot and Bothered” won the “Best Short Film” award at the 2013 Twin Cities Film Festival and was the only comedy to screen at both the 2013 New York Television Festival and the 2013 Independent Television Festival.
