“My successes tend to come after moments that felt like my biggest failures.” - Shannon RowburyIt’s easy to view great athletes through just the lens of their training and results. But in this episode, you’ll be reminded there’s so much more to a balanced life.Shannon authentically shares her thoughts on dance, recovery, competing, advocating, and parenting. Her intentional approach to every life endeavor is refreshing and inspiring.Show Notes(3:10) Life now, growing up with Grandma and Irish dance…(8:15) How did the performance aspect of dance translate into successes in running?(11:10) “The more that you can be present, and react to what's coming around you and utilize those strengths and skills that you've sharpened through training, that's when you have the highest likelihood of success.”(14:22) The family bonding experience of dance and sports…(17:16) A transition to running and the impact of a coach…(20:25) “The role of a coach is to lay the fundamentals... if you want to be good, if you want to be great, it's not going to happen at the end of high school. And probably not even at the end of college, it's going to happen through year after year of hard work... And it's teaching those lessons of how to show up and be a good teammate and ultimately reach that mountaintop over years of consistent effort.”(23:22) An injury and a career turning point…(24:51) “After feeling my feelings, which I did for a little bit, I really focused on understanding the root of the problem and making a thoughtful and patient plan to be back to my best fitness in a year from where I was rather than, "I have to be ready by the fall," or, "I have to be ready by indoors…" Let's just go through this recovery process in the way that it needs to be done.”(29:04) Getting “permission” to be patient…(31:31) The secret to getting the best out of yourself when the stakes are the highest…(35:28) “I describe it like the pendulum. You can't swing this way if you don't swing that way. And, so really trying to find that balance in life so that you can be ready and willing and in the right space, mentally, physically, and heart, when it matters most.”(36:00) Imagining More…(40:25) On deciding to be a Mom… “I wanted to make sure she knew that she was my first priority, and I'm trying to make sure that she doesn't ever resent running because it took me away from her. I try to include her in what I'm doing as much as possible. And it brings me such joy that she gets to interact with world champions and Olympians and incredible, incredible people.”(44:15) “If you create a structure for success, our women will come back and do amazing things, but we really need to make it a more supportive, inclusive system.”(45:42) What does Go Be More mean? “I'm really proud to have been someone that didn't let the norms around me set my expectations for myself and that instead it was really, how can I go be more? How can I be the best version of myself? And as much as possible, trying to define what that is, rather than what has been. And so to me Go Be More is being a trailblazer.”If you liked this episode, check out our interviews with Olympians Kara Goucher and Amy Acuff.Recorded April 30, 2021.References:Imagining More Foundation - websiteParity - website3-Time Olympian Shannon Rowbury Turning 2020 Into Miracle Season - TeamUSA.orgGuest:Shannon Rowbury - website | Instagram | TwitterHosts:Bryan Green - bryan@gobemore.co, maketheleapbook.comJon Rankin - @chasejonrankin, Go Be MoreLinks:Go Be More Podcast - Episodes | Instagram | FacebookGo Be More websiteGo Be More YouTube ChannelProduction and EditingCreatives Collective Marketing
“Replenishing, the stretching, icing, therapy, sleeping, and the mind frame are important. So for me, you know, even when you're sleeping you're training. I really believe it was a 24/7 job.” - Meb Keflezighi Today's guest is Meb Keflezighi, arguably the greatest marathoner in US history.Meb has been someone I've looked up to for more nearly 30 years! In many ways, I've been chasing Meb ever since I became a runner. My co-host, Bryan, and I got to catch up with Meb and dive into what makes him, well, Meb! Consistency, preparation and intention are words that can easily define Meb and how he approached his craft as a runner everyday. But it was how he framed these elements that led to sustained excellence for twenty years. This is what we explore in our episode with Meb today.Show Notes(4:26) Where are you right now?(6:13) What are the qualities that stand out in Meb, according to Bryan, Jon, and Meb(9:31) Approaching races with a boldness… “I'm not super comfortable for the last lap, so I got to make it count beforehand.”(11:41) Being a “chasee” and later becoming the “chased”... early college experiences that shaped Meb's mindset…(14:01) Developing patience, “...it is one goal at a time, one event at a time.”(16:06) Thoughts on risk versus reward…(18:02) What went into building a sustainable career?(21:08) Jon's recounting of watching the Athens Olympic Marathon and Meb's thoughts during the event…(24:43) “No athlete in history has probably done more drills than Meb.” —Coach Bob Larsen(26:50) “I'm going to plug your book here, Make the Leap. You have to be able to think better, train better, and all that comes to be run faster.”(28:56) Sharing about a devastating injury in 2008 and a new perspective…(36:07) Lessons learned while coming back from an injury…(38:43) “You know, it's mind-boggling what the body can do when it's in the right mind frame.” Meb and Jon reflect on past injuries and healing.(42:18) “...failure is just another building block towards a larger success in the future.”—Bryan - Meb shares habits that contribute to success.(45:38) Meb's relationship with UCAN… “The best thing you could do is get the right nutrition to help you accomplish whatever your goal is. Carrie interviews Olympian Alysia Montaño! They chat about food, racing during pregnancy, athlete sponsorship, and much more! Show notes for this episode can be found at ctollerun.com. Alysia Montaño Alysia attended Canyon High School in Santa Clarita, CA where she became a multi sport standout in basketball, soccer, and athletics. Under Tony Sandoval at the University of California Berkeley, is where Alysia will become the 800m specialist she is today. In 2007 as a junior, Alysia recorded the best season in Cal Berkeley history finishing undefeated and claiming both the indoor and outdoor NCAA titles as well as her first USA Championship title. Heading into the 2008 season, Alysia was ranked #1 in the USA and she was more focused then ever to make the Olympic team. Rounding out her senior year coupled with intense training, the pressure began to take a toll on Alysia and, throughout the indoor and outdoor season, a stress fracture formed in her navicular bone and finally gave in at the 2008 Olympic Trials. Alysia rehabbed in San Diego at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista during 2009 where she was under the watchful eye of Juaquim Cruz, Brazil's 800m '84 gold medalist. At the end of the year, Alysia realized Chula Vista was not the place for her so she made the move back to Berkeley to resume with Tony Sandoval. 2010 was Alysia's comeback year and she was back with a vengeance. Alysia started off the season by earning a bronze medal at the 2010 World Indoor Championships in Doha then went on to claim another outdoor USA title. Alysia finished the season with a PR and the worlds fastest time by winning Monaco's Hercules Diamond League with a time of 1:57.34. For the next three years, Alysia defends her title as USA Champion to go on and become a finalists in the 2011 World Championships(4th), 2012 Olympics(5th), and 2013 World Championships(4th). With disheartening finishes at every major event, Alysia decides to take the 2014 season off year to start a family. During pregnancy Alysia maintained fitness by continuing to run and at 34 weeks pregnant, Alysia decided to take advantage of her qualifying standard and enter into the 2014 Outdoor USA Championships just to have fun and advocate for fit pregnancies. Little did she know it would make headlines world wide and become a major topic of discussion on almost every news outlet. With some calculations of web analytics. Alysia's pregnant run had 5 times as many hits as all of her championship wins combined. In 2015 Alysia planed on slowly returning to form and use it as a building block for 2016, but Alysia surprised everyone (including herself). Claiming her first indoor championship in the 600m 6 months after giving birth, Alysia set the tone for 2015. In March at the 2015 World Relays, Alysia anchored the USA 4x800m relay team to an American Record with the fastest split of competition with a time of 1:58.90. In June, Alysia went into USA Outdoor Championships as an underdog because of a nagging injury. Alysia adjusted her game plan and changed her running style and advanced through each round running with the pack and against all odds Alysia claimed yet another USA title bringing her total to 7 and earning a spot on USA's 2015 world Championship team. Keeping her schedule light, Alysia opted for the Pan Am Games and earned herself a gold in the 4x400m relay and a silver in the 800m. In Beijing, China Alysia's 2015 World Championships were cut short; with about 200m to go in the first round, Alysia was tripped by a runner trying to pass on the inside thus bringing her down to the track.

Zenon Bilas is a 7-time USA Barefoot Water Skiing Champion. He has over 30 years of teaching all levels of water skiers, including national and world champions. He has performed barefoot shows and water ski clinics on four continents with stops in the USA, Sweden, Belgium, Brazil, Japan, Lebanon, and China, including one show for over 500,000 people in Yueyang, China. He has authored hundreds of articles on boat tests, product reviews, and water ski coaching tips. And, you may remember a certain cartoon tiger waterskiing in a TV commercial for Frosted Flakes….that was Zenon skiing as Tony the Tiger’s body double! Zenon and I discussed how he got started on the water, tips for training, finding a coach, and driving the boat for tow sports, innovation on the manufacturing side, and more. With all Zenon has done and continues to do, it was impossible to cover everything we wanted to get to. I really hope I can get him on again for a follow up episode (or two!). Enjoy! On what got him interested in being on the water…..We were fishing. We went to a pond in Chicago and it was fun. We did that, and that winter they had a show on fishing in the Northwest Territory and that really intrigued us. That made us go out and buy a 7 ½ horsepower Mercury outboard. We started going to Wisconsin Dells and fishing on the river. We would put the motor on a Jon boat and go fishing. On moving into bigger boats…..Like a lot of things, once you get into it, you get into it. We bought a 15’ Silverline and it had an 85 horsepower Mercury. It was kind of a sports boat and we went fishing. It served both worlds. We would go to a place on the river, put the boat on shore, and go fishing from the beach. Wisconsin River had stripers, walleye, and occasionally we caught sturgeons. I remember driving that boat. You hear of people now buying their first boat being a 50-footer. I didn’t think of it until now but we had a progression. From pond to 7 ½ horsepower to 85 horsepower. We started from the smallest and learned. On watersports entering the picture…..It was being at the right place at the right time. We were in the Wisconsin Dells and we went to the Tommy Bartlett Water Ski Show. I tried skiing the year before that and the cottage came with a pair of Cypress Garden skis. But we never skied before. For some reason, I was the one to try it. We tried it and tried it and I couldn’t get up because we didn’t know what we were doing. We went back to fishing. The next summer we saw the show and that was the game changer. I saw water skiing and jumping and all the tricks they did and barefooting really intrigued me. On going from not getting up to hooked…..We would also boat on Round Lake in Northern IL. My brother bought a pair of skis and he learned from a friend. And that friend said he would help me. I didn’t want to get up on skis, I was into fishing. He was insistent and he got in the water and showed me how the skis and my legs should be positioned. I was more comfortable with him in the water with me. The first try I got up 50 or 60 feet. We tried one more time and boom, I got around the whole lake. The coaching was a big inspiration. Going from trial and error to having someone with me. I think that coaching in any discipline is really important. The coaching for me was watching the ski show. I would watch it over and over. I had to go up the ladder. I learned to get up on two skis, then I learned to slalom ski, get up on a single ski. That all was self-taught. On training for skiing…..I remember skiing so much one Sunday that when I landed back at the beach I couldn’t move. Back then I didn’t know what I was doing. Once you start coaching people and writing about it, you start thinking about it. When I train I push myself but in a good way where I can’t get hurt. I’m a believer that if you stay within a certain range of technique and not over training, that it’s hard to get hurt. So, what I do is a push myself but I pace myself. I’m in tune with my body so I know when I need to stop or take a break. I can tell when I teach other people that they don’t have that sensitivity. On what you can do off the water to see improvement on the water…..If you’re gonna focus on one main thing it’s eating right. I’ve been through this, I’ve gone and skied a ton and gone to the gym and I was getting out of shape because I wasn’t eating right. Eating right is the basic foundation so that any training you do after that will be complemented. If you don’t eat right your training won’t be as effective. I know a lot of people do yoga, it’s great for stretching. I’m not a big fan of doing too much at the gym because I see people who are hardcore at the gym and then they get hurt. Any kind of workout should be a light workout, stretching exercises, yoga or pilates; those are all great for skiing. You want a high strength-to-weight ratio. On what to look for in a good coach…..Have someone who has a really good understanding of technique. It’s not trial and error. There’s a lot more information now. Someone who understands body position., how you should be on your skis and on your feet. Someone who has a deeper thought about it than let’s go out and try it. On how to be a good tow sport driver…..If you want to learn to be a good driver, the main thing is to listen to the skier. It’s not about you, it’s about the skier. You have to listen to what they want and develop a sensitivity to what they want. Then you have to become sensitive to the surroundings and waterways, to seeing speed and how you accelerate, that you’re not abrupt, and be aware of traffic around you. Your job is to drive for the skier in tow, not just to drive for fun. On innovation in boat manufacturing…..The innovation on boats keeps getting better. You’re seeing boats that do specific things better than before. Unlike a lot of other segments of boating, the water sports industry cares about the wake. Every wake is different. The slalom wake is different than the wakeboard wake, which is different than the hot sport right now which is the wake surfing wake. The tow boat companies are creating features in the wake to make the experience better for the person behind the boat. On similarities and differences across tow sports…..There are some differences but a lot of similarities. The biggest similarity is the balance point. Your body position is very key to all those events. The key element is to have your weight centered over the middle of your feet. Most people ski or wakeboard more heel heavy. You can do a small change in your body position which will put your weight over the center of your feet and that’s a focus in all water sports. On advice for getting started…..With boating or getting into tow sports, it’s coaching. Absolutely have someone coach you. Don’t do it by trial and error. It’s going to take longer and you have a really good chance of forming bad habits. It’s harder to get rid of bad habits than to teach someone good habits. Get coaching right now, today, whatever level you’re at. You’ll progress much quicker and you’ll enjoy it more! There was SO much I did not get to with Zenon and we will have to talk again. His experiences competing at the highest level of the sport, traveling the world, writing for various publications, getting back into competition at the age of 55 and more are all things we didn’t get to tackle.
In this episode of Keep Moving Forward I interview Team USA Track and Field Olympian and 7x USA champion in the 800 meters, Alysia Montaño. “No matter what happens, finish strong.” These words, spoken by the great Alysia Montaño, mean more to her today than they ever have before. After a fifth place finish in the 800 meters in the 2012 Olympic Games, Alysia was ready to forge ahead and claim gold in 2016. However, after a devastating fall in the finals of the Olympic Trials, Alysia saw her chances at pursuing this Olympics fade away. But she did not stay down for long. In fact, she didn’t stay down at all. Alysia picked herself up and crossed the finish line, inspiring all who witnessed the race that day. On top of being a 7-time USA champion, Alysia has faced much adversity in her sport, including the recent revelation that in her 800 meter race in the 2012 Olympics, both the first and third place finishers were found to have taken performance enhancing drugs; therefore cheating a podium finish away from Alysia. Through injury, setback, and competing with those who don’t respect the sport as she does, Alysia never faltered. She stayed positive and upbeat, knowing that every day is a blessing. She is the living embodiment of “keep moving forward” and it was an honor to have the opportunity to speak with her for this episode of my podcast. I hope that you enjoy my talk with the Olympian with the flower in her hair, Alysia Montaño. If you would like to keep up to date on everything that Alysia is up to, you can head over to http://www.alysiamontano.com/ and follow her on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter all @AlysiaMontano. Always remember, you can beat the odds and go the distance, if only you keep moving forward.
My guest today is Ronnie White, one of the top memory experts in the world. He's a two-time national memory champion, having won the USA competition in both 2009 and 2010. He also held the record for the fastest memorization of a deck of shuffled cards for 2 years - a shocking 1 minute and 27 seconds. Today, he trains individuals and corporations all over the world on how to better take advantage of their natural memory skills. Given my background in Memory, Speed Reading, and Accelerated Learning, I was eager to interview Ron and learn everything I could from him. We talk about mnemonic techniques, adaptations, and a lot of powerful learning strategies. Just a heads up, this episode is going to be a bit “technical,” and we're not going to dumb things down for you. If you're unclear on some of the terms, I suggest checking out our past episodes with Dr. Anthony Metivier, Nelson Dellis, and Mark Channon.
