Slam the Gavel welcomes Heather Bendl to the podcast. Heather is originally from Round Lake, Illinois but now resides in the Daytona, Florida area. She has four children ages 18, 17, 13, and 8. She was married to their father Justin Serlick from 2003 to 2013. Upon her divorce she was awarded sole custody of the oldest three. Justin Serlick refused to move out of Heather's home with her children after the divorce and he continued to emotionally and physically abuse the children and Heather. In 2017 Heather had her fourth child with Justin, this was not a planned pregnancy. In fact, she was in school full-time working on her Bachelor's of Science Degree at UW-Parkside in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Justin was taking advantage of Heather after she would take her Ambien to sleep. Heather had tried over the years to get Justin to move out of her home but his mother had threatened Heather over the years that if she removed Justin from the home she would make sure Heather never saw her children again......Non-Profit Email Address:JusticefortheSerlickChildren@gmail.comNon-Profit YouTube Channel:https://www.youtube.com/@JusticefortheSerlickChildrenNon-Profit FB Page:https://www.facebook.com/JusticefortheSerlickChildrenSupportshow(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)Maryann Petri: dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.comhttps://www.tiktok.com/@maryannpetriFacebook: https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/guitarpeace/Pinterest: Slam The Gavel Podcast/@guitarpeaceLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maryann-petri-62a46b1ab/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536 Twitter https://x.com/PetriMaryannEzlegalsuit.comhttps://ko-fi.com/maryannpetri*DISCLAIMER* The use of this information is at the viewer/user's own risk. Hello to you listening in Round Lake, Curtis, Michigan!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga.Things in this country are upside down and backward in ways we have never ever seen before. Is that good? No! It's a nightmare. What do we do now? I'm glad you asked.First off, you can rely on me to be here with you and for you. Thanks to your devoted listening this global podcast is edging close to 200,000 plays. There will be stories and more to inform, delight, inspire, and motivate in the days ahead. As to, “What do we do now?” get comfy and relish Colorado Poet Laureat Andrea Gibson's Letter to a Friend. Click HEREor read the letter in the Episode NotesPractical Tip: Pay particular attention to how grief and fear can give way to relief, clarity, what needs doing, and how to go about it. Ask yourself: “What is my job in this moment? What do I specifically have to offer? Where can I be of most use and service to others? How can I creatively, actively participate in pulling the arc of the moral universe toward justice for all?A tight bundle of sticks cannot be broken as easily as a single branch. We are in this together. Our lives are in our hands. More than ever before this is our opportunity to cherish life and work for it! Colorado Poet Laureate Andrea Gibson's Letter To A Friend After the ElectionBy Andrea GibsonNovember 16, 2024Architects of ChangeFriend,I am writing about the text you sent the morning after the election. “What do we do now?” you asked. My first response was to stare blankly at a blank wall for an hour. But I've had a week to sit with it, and here's what I want to share:Last April, after two years of chemotherapy, when my oncologist told me the cancer was now considered incurable, I felt the expected fear and grief. But something I didn't tell you was this—I also felt relief. Why relief? Because when I heard the system say, “We can't save you,” it was the first time since my diagnosis that I felt as if my life was in my hands. Watching the election, I felt something similar: grief, fear. Then this thought—Our lives are in our hands. They always were, but it's clearer than ever now.I think I've told you about my friend Liza. She was one of the most committed activists I've ever known. She built her life like an altar to social justice. She was also a Buddhist. A couple of weeks before her death, when asked how she wanted to be remembered, she said, “Just don't let anyone say I was the best at anything. It's so obnoxiously American.” As we look for creative paths forward, I want to beg “the left” to stop tearing each other to shreds over who is The Best at fighting for change. When we allow our egos to do our heart's work, what needs to get done doesn't get done. I understand that people are frantic for a clear and direct answer. But it's so important to choose curiosity over certainty in a moment that asks us to create something entirely new. This is that moment.I keep asking myself, “What is my job in this moment? What do I specifically have to offer?” It's empowering to ask those questions because no one's job will be the same. There were many years of my life that I did not feel I was actively participating in change unless I was in the streets protesting. As my health worsened, I knew that wasn't where I would be of most service. Creatively explore where you might be most useful. Throw a What's My Job party and explore the question with your community. Friends may reflect a specific talent or gift they see in you that you haven't yet recognized. My friend Oak, (great name, I know) used to say, “If we can't imagine it, we can't create it.” Right now I'm putting active energy into imagining what's possible. What does a compassionate world look like? What would it feel like to wake up every morning to a planet fueled by community and not capitalism? When I'm glued to my phone doom-scrolling the news, it's almost impossible for me to creatively imagine, but anytime I've got my feet in the grass I open in a new way. Even in a city, you can notice the way your body changes with the seasons. You can mirror the earth's steady and persistent pace. Save the seeds of an apple. Grow veggies in plant pots in the windowsill of your apartment. Feed a stranger. Drive a neighbor through the sunshine to a doctor's appointment in another state. Never forget how alone we are not. The moss, the mountains, the redwood tree, the marigold, the mourning dove calling for her love's return—are our allies. Every natural thing in this world is invested in the peace of this world. All that is good and gracious whispers, “We are with you.”I keep thinking about something I learned in my early 20's—the rural poor are more likely to survive a catastrophic world event than the wealthiest billionaires. It's really out of touch to use the word educated to refer solely to college-educated people. Everyone is educated in their own unique way and those of us who had the privilege of attending college are very often the least educated in regards to understanding that we are not just connected to nature, we are nature. To not know that is to be disconnected from our power source. Two decades ago, I was partnered with a journalist who was reporting on the invasion of Iraq and the occupation of the West Bank in Palestine. What she'd witnessed was horrific, but she was deeply struck by the gratitude of the people in comparison to those of us living in relative safety in the US. Since that time, I have understood that the most grateful people in the world are rarely those who appear to have the most to be grateful for. I hope we each feel a deep responsibility to be grateful for our lives through this time, to wholly cherish every morning we are alive to see the sun. I know the upcoming years will be challenging. But if the upcoming years are also cherished, they will be less challenging.I understand why so many people are sharing what they think we should be feeling right now. Though there is love at the heart of that demand, there is no such thing as a moral emotion. No one owes the world their misery. What we owe is our active participation in finding creative and compassionate paths forward. Every activist I have ever known who believed they owed the world their unhappiness has burned out. If we consciously fuel our joy, if we put our attention on the world's beauty, we will have far more strength and stamina to show up to the world's pain.We need stamina. The 73 million people who voted for Trump appear to be more energized than ever. And it's clear to me that the narrative that every Trump voter is “ignorant and hateful” is hurting our movements. 95% of our marginalized friends have at least one family member they deeply trust who voted for Trump this year. Most people, regardless of how they are voting, believe they are voting for a better world. There is a terrifying amount of hate in our country, yes. But there is far more fear. Hate is the end of a conversation. Fear isn't always. I've been on the lookout for moments when an honest and respectful conversation might reach the root of someone else's fear. These conversations can surface big emotions. A lot of what we're navigating right now can, so I've been thinking of ways we can come together to build inner resilience. There is so much we can learn from each other in regards to working with difficult emotions to minimize the time we are undone by them. I'll say it more bluntly—we can't be chronically destroyed by microaggressions and also be people who can organize around the violent deportation of millions of our community members or any other inhumane cruelty expected. This moment in history isn't only about rooting in our values, it's about rooting in our tenacity, courage, and strength. Here's to our tenacity, courage, and strength, friend. I know so much feels heavy right now. It is heavy. But never forget that our hearts are community gardens. I think we'll all start seeing how much we have on our side once we each begin to see how much we have to give.Love, Andrea Originally published November 14, 2024 in “Things That Don't Suck: One Poet's Quest to Uncover What Shifts When We Shift our Attention.”You're always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe and spread the word with a generous 5-star review and comment - it helps us all - and join us next time!Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out Services I Offer,✓ For a no-obligation conversation about your communication challenges, get in touch with me today✓ Stay current with Diane as “Wyzga on Words” on Substack and on LinkedInStories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present Quarter Moon Story Arts. A young woman is found dead on the floor of a Tijuana hotel room. An ID in a nearby purse reads “Atlantis Black.” The police report states that the body does not seem to match the identification, yet the body is quickly cremated and the case is considered closed. So begins Betsy Bonner’s search for her sister, Atlantis, and the unraveling of the mysterious final months before Atlantis’s disappearance, alleged overdose, and death. With access to her sister’s email and social media accounts, Bonner attempts to decipher and construct a narrative: frantic and unintelligible Facebook posts, alarming images of a woman with a handgun, Craigslist companionship ads, DEA agent testimony, video surveillance, police reports, and various phone calls and moments in the flesh conjured from memory. Through a history only she and Atlantis shared—a childhood fraught with abuse and mental illness, Atlantis’s precocious yet short rise in the music world, and through it all an unshakable bond of sisterhood—Bonner finds questions that lead only to more questions and possible clues that seem to point in no particular direction. In this haunting memoir and piercing true crime account, Bonner must decide how far she will go to understand a sister who, like the mythical island she renamed herself for, might prove impossible to find. “A haunting, mind-bending memoir. . . . riveting.” —New York Times “A mixture of biography and true crime, this narrative . . . offers more plot twists, shocking revelations and shady characters than most contemporary thrillers.” —NPR Betsy Bonner is the author of the poetry collection Round Lake. Is your confidence in yourself, or in God? Do you value the counsel of others? Are you aware of your blind spots? In this episode, Pastor Mark Carter and special guest Pastor Gary Ricci discuss how to remain humble as a leader, keeping the focus where it belongs: Jesus. Love the Bible Leadership Podcast? Consider becoming a Patron for as little as $3 per month!Show Notes:Welcome to BLP. Today, Pastor Carter interviews Gary Ricci, founding Pastor of New Hope Christian Community Church in Round Lake, Illinois. In 2009, Gary was sent from his Associate Pastor position at NorthBridge church in Antioch to start New Hope. Coincidentally the same summer Carter planted his new church, about a block away. In this episode, Carter and Gary discuss how to remain humble as a leader, keeping the focus where it belongs. 1. You need this. Beware of blind spots. // With success, it’s all too easy to give yourself the glory. Everything may be going well and you’re getting even receiving compliments over other pastors, but don’t let the admiration of others go to your head. The draw to compete with, and ‘win one over on’, other pastors can lead a belief that your strengths are more important, inflating your ego. Pay attention and don’t give in to the desire to be better than another person. Illusion of self-sufficiency. // You’ll no doubt be supported by a team of other leaders, staff and maybe other pastors, all with different strengths than yours. Because your weaknesses are balanced and filled by the strengths of others, it doesn’t mean you don’t have weaknesses. When you think your strengths are the most important strengths and your weaknesses are the least important; it’s all too easy to overlook the contribution of others and inflate your own worth to the organization/church. Don’t focus only on what you do, but appreciate others’ strengths and remember your strengths don’t make you better than anyone else. Face your weaknesses. // There will be areas where you’re less competent and need help, we all have weaknesses. When things aren’t going well, and you’re hit with on-going challenges, take time to acknowledge and be honest about how your own weaknesses contributed. Examine whether your confidence is built on what you can do versus what the Lord can do. When you rely and try to build success only upon your own skills and strengths, you’ll find you fall short, we all do. Realize what you need is the supernatural, not natural. Unity and vision must be Holy-spirit led; Jesus needs to work through the church, it’s foundational. Further, scripture is your ultimate guide, spend time with the Lord, in the word, and pray and listen for wisdom.Character matters. // Even if you have all the pre-requisites for your position, on paper, your character has to be there too. Failure is part of the humbling process. If you believe the successes you see are because of only you, alternatively you’ll believe the failures are also because of you. This thinking can bring you down very quickly. Or, you may blame others that your plan wasn’t carried out exactly according to your directions. Depend on Jesus and realize none of us are competent, success comes from the Lord. He grows us through our failures. Acknowledging and valuing the gifts the Lord has instilled in others, aids in your humility journey. Ask yourself if, “Am I here to support others, and make it about them, or make it about me?” As you come to the end of yourself, pray for the Lord to bring people to the church. Let the Lord write his name on it, give Him the glory. This is the Lord’s church, remember that He is planting it.Allow others to speak into your life. // Intentionally seek out wise mentors, put yourself around people who are smar

The first main stop on our 2019 camping trip out West (which Trevor is calling our Ultramarathon Sufferfest Extravaganza) was the beautiful Charlevoix Marathon along the shores of Lake Michigan. This was my 58th marathon, 45th state, and 4th fastest marathon. The day went better than I expected and I managed to squeak out a BQ and get 1st place in my age group. Let me tell you all about it . . . Race Recap: The Charlevoix Marathon The 13th annual Charlevoix Marathon was held on Saturday, June 22nd, 2019. They also hosted a half marathon, 10k and 5k the same day.Pre-race: Packet pick up was available on Friday afternoon and early race morning. The packet pick up and race finishing area was held at Bridge Park in historic downtown Charlevoix, adjacent to the famous draw bridge. Traffic into downtown Charlevoix was very slow but once we got there getting my bib, shirt, and reusable race bag was very easy. Angie and Trev in Charlavoix After scoping out the race area and getting my bib we strolled around the beautiful lakefront and then headed to our campsite which was located about 15 miles away. I spent the rest of the day taking it easy and getting my race kit put together.Race Morning: Since the marathon start time was at 6:30am (and I like to be early) we decided that I would drive myself to the race. So, if you’re envisioning Trevor and the kids out on the course cheering me on or waiting at the finish line that didn’t happen. Look at this tiny race bib! There was plenty of free downtown parking on race morning. I got there around 45 minutes before the race started and had my choice of spots. There was also plenty of time to use the port-a-pots and head over to the start area. A listener named Mike who was there for the half marathon found me and we had a nice chat and got a picture. I also saw MTA member Heidi at the start. She and her sister were doing the 10k which started at 7:15 a.m. The race had a good announcer and sound system and they solicited a volunteer from the crowd to sing the National Anthem (since their scheduled person called in sick). The weather was clear and mid-50’s at the start and the early morning light was beautiful. I lined up just behind the 3:45 pace group and waited for the starting gun. I felt excited to be there with just the right amount of pre-race anticipation. The Course: The start line is on Bridge Street just beyond the draw bridge which opens every 30 minutes. Lake Michigan was visible just to the left and Round Lake to the right. For the first three miles we went through some nice shady neighborhoods before winding out of town on a paved bike/walk path. The course is an out and back so that makes it more predictable than a point to point courses. You know anything that goes up on the way out will be down on the way back and vise versa. The course is mostly flat with a few rolling hills. There was one hill in the earlier miles that I briefly walked because I didn’t want to elevate my heart rate too much at that point. The course ventures around the local ski mountain Mount McSauba, down tree lined roads, along the lakeshore, and then the turn around point was at Little Traverse Bay. There were a couple miles of the course on a wooden bridge that was a nice change on the legs. I can see why Runner’s World Magazine named the Charlevoix Marathon as one of the best “small town marathons” in the United States. The course stayed nice and wide throughout and there was plenty of room to run. This felt like a big contrast from previously running the London Marathon where it was crowded the whole way. There were stretches that I wasn’t running around anyone but there were also plenty of sections where I leap frogged other runners who were around the same pace. The course is advertized as fast and flat (unless you’re from Florida says the race info). They also advertize a high rate of BQ’s on the course. In 2018 19.6% of marathoners BQ’d and this year 16.4% BQ’d. Aid Stations: There weren’t many spectators out on the course so it was nice to see the friendly people at the aid stations. The aid stations were located approximately every 1.5 miles and had water and sports drink. A few locations also had extras like candy and there was even a bacon stop. Since the course was out and back the bacon stop was located at mile 3 and 23 and I didn’t feel like testing my body with it at that point. For my fueling I used Generation Ucan snack bars (one 30 minutes before) and ½ bar every 5 miles. I also took some electrolyte capsules. I was also drinking a cup of water at each aid station and dumping one on myself to stay cool in the later miles. Use the promo code “MTABQ” to save 15% off your order. Or if you’re new to UCAN, save 25% on your first order with code MTA25”.Finish Line: During the marathon my mantra was “keep pushing.” This kept me from getting comfortable at a pace and slacking off (and also helped keep my mindset strong). My legs felt strong although I did have some glute soreness which I took as a good sign that they were doing their job (and not giving me hamstring pain). I was happy to have a surge of energy to run the last mile with a 7:58 pace. I had a strong finishing kick the final 0.2 miles to cross the finish line in 3:39:25. This was my 58th marathon and 45th state and 4th fastest marathon (haven’t run faster for 5 years). My split for the first half was 1:48:40 and 2nd half split was 1:51:06. Overall, I was 88/364 and the 21/168 female. In addition to squeaking out a BQ (my qualifying time is 3:40). The finish line was located back in historic Charlevoix. There were a good number of spectators cheering runners to a strong finish. The men’s winner for the marathon was Leo Foley with a time of 2:42:46. The female marathon champion was Rachel Whipple with a time of 3:07:30. The half marathon male champion was Will Schrantz with a time of 1:13:44 The female half marathon winner was Shelby Kelsh with a time of 1:23:27. The marathon had a total of 364 finishers. The half marathon had 719 finishers. The 10k had 279 finishers. And the 5k had 359 finishers. The post race area was past the bridge in the downtown area where they’d hosted packet pickup. For food and drink options they had water, chocolate milk, licorice, fruit snacks, bananas, apples, chips, popcorn, pizza, and rice krispie bars. Runners reclined on the grass out in the sun to eat their food, wait for family members, and to participate in the post-race award ceremony.MTA Meet Up I drove back to our camper and was able to get a shower before we headed back to Charlevoix for the MTA meet up at The Villager Pub. It was awesome to get to meet Dan Beard from MI who ran the marathon, Heidi from MD (who was coming off an injury that prevented her from doing the marathon and walked the 10k) and her sister Wendy who walked her first 10k, and sisters Karen and Beth from MI who did the half marathon as part of their training for an upcoming marathon. MTA Meet Up After the race I met up with another MTA listener from the Traverse City area named Amy. She’d run and did great in the 5k and it was fun to talk with her. Since my phone died she graciously became my personal photographer. I went and checked my time and was shocked to see that I finished first in my AG (40-44). However I wasn’t able to stick around for the award ceremony because I needed to get back to Trevor and the boys. I also met up with listener Tina and her husband Mike (who was a great at cheering out on the course). Tina also finished 1st in her AG and BQ’d. with MTA listener TinaHow to Keep Pushing in a Marathon I mentioned that I started the marathon around the 3:45 pace group but quickly passed the group because there was too much talking and it was hard for me to focus. I guess I just wasn’t in the head space for being around a group the whole marathon (maybe because I’d basically had no privacy or alone time in the previous 5 days as we traveled with the camper). I put on an audiobook (which I find helps keep my mind engaged without the adrenaline spikes that music can provide) and listened to that until my phone died around mile 15. My strategy going into the race was to run as strong as possible and leave it all there. That was one reason why I kept a fairly aggressive pace in the beginning. I had just come off reading the book Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins and that really helped me be in a good place mentally. For those who aren’t familiar with him, he came from a very rough background of poverty and abuse and went on to become a Navy Seal and general bad ass. He’s a very extreme personality who is driven to find the limits physically and mentally (he also went through Army Ranger training, set the pull up record for 4,230 pull ups in 24 hours, has run the Badwater 135 numerous times, etc.) While I don’t endorse his way of training because he absolutely trashes his body, he shares a lot of great mindset strategies and tips. In fact he starts out the book with a solo mission that goes like this: “Situation: You are in danger of living a life so comfortable and soft that you will die without ever realizing your true potential. Mission: To unshackle your mind. Ditch the victim’s mentality forever. Own all aspects of your life completely. Build an unbreakable foundation. Execution: Read this cover to cover. Study the techniques within, accept all ten challenges. Repeat. Repetition will callous your mind. If you do your job to the best of your ability, this will hurt. This mission is not about making yourself feel better. This mission is about being better and having a greater impact on the world. Don’t stop when you are tired. Stop when you are done.” -David Goggins There’s a lot of language in the book but it’s also fascinating and a great way to dial in a stronger mental game. My Training “Please share your goals, pacing strategy, and any adjustments you made during the race.” -Peter My goal going into this marathon was to have a strong race and finish as sub-4 as possible. I had a lot of confidence coming off the London Marathon 7 weeks ago that I could at least do that time (3:59) or better. After London I took 2-3 weeks for easy running and didn’t do any runs over 90 minutes during that time. Then I had time to do a 17 mile (2:30) long run and 20 mile (3:05) long run before doing a 3 week taper before this marathon. Both long runs were run in fairly warm conditions on a hilly course and I averaged around a 9:35 pace. So this didn’t give me a lot of information on how my body would do on a flatter marathon course. I’d lost about 6 more pounds since the London Marathon so I knew this would also be a factor in my favor. Are you still using the Hanson’s Marathon Training Method? -Debbie When we did the episode about how we were training for the London Marathon I mentioned that I was loosely basing my training off the Hanson’s Training Method. So, I need to clarify that I never strictly followed this method. But I did take some features and incorporate them into my training. That would include running more days per week, going into my long run with my legs somewhat fatigued, and capping my longest run at 3 hours. Since the London Marathon I’ve been doing most of my shorter training runs on the treadmill because my allergies have been so bad. I also find that it’s easier to keep my pace slower for easy runs on the TM because there isn’t the variation in terrain. I’ve been keeping up my schedule of core and lower body strength training, getting regular massage, and getting lots of sleep. My Pacing Strategy I can’t say that I had much of a pacing strategy going in to the Charlevoix Marathon. I wanted to keep my effort level fairly steady in the first 20 miles so that it was challenging but not exhausting. From experience I know that I can usually muster a few strong finishing miles so I had the mental confidence going in that I can be strong after mile 20. One of my go-to mantras is “I’m stronger after mile 20.” I’ve also heard some coaches say that the first half of a marathon is through mile 20 and the second half is the final 10k. I started just behind the 3:45 pacing group thinking that it would be a nice stretch goal. However, like I mentioned, I decided early on to pass that group because it felt too wearing to listen to the constant chatter. I figured at some point that I might end up seeing them again. I tried to take advantage of certain features of the course like opening up my pace a bit on downhill sections. A couple times I glanced down to see my pace, saw it was pretty fast for the early miles, did a body scan (breathing, muscles, etc), and hoped I wouldn’t regret that pace later. I think every marathoner worries occasionally about a fast first half coming back to bite them. I’ve certainly blown up plenty of times later in a marathon. But I knew that my energy felt solid and the cool morning was working to my advantage so I wanted to capitalize on that as much as possible too. Mentally I tried to maintain a balance of being focused but not obsessing over the little things. It’s a temptation during a marathon to fall back to the pace of least resistance and I was determined to fight that. My mantra every time I felt any negativity or doubt creep in was “you’re okay, stay hard.” I also kept telling myself, “keep pushing.” I was able to reel in a couple runners who had gotten ahead of me during the race and that felt good. It’s okay to let a bit of competition creep in as long as you’re careful to keep the big picture in mind. Most of us aren’t racing for 1st place so it’s important to not let your ego get the better of you by racing people mid-race. Around mile 20 I was trying to do some calculations in my head and figured that if I could keep sub-9:00 miles to the finish I would finish around 3:40. But math is hard during a marathon so I didn’t obsess over my pace and just kept pushing. With 3 miles left I realized that I had a good chance of finishing sub 3:40 which would be a BQ if I kept up my pace. But I never allow myself to get overconfident until I’ve actually crossed the finish line. with MTA listener Mike At mile 24 MTA listener Mike unexpectedly showed up to run the last couple miles with me. One thought I had was “I can’t let him see me whimp out in the last couple of miles.” Despite pushing hard up a final hill I still had enough in me to have a good finishing kick for the last 0.2 miles. It was almost unbelievable to look down and see sub 3:40 on my watch. I got the biggest post-marathon high feeling so happy and grateful for such a strong marathon. When I got over to the timing table and saw my official time of 3:39:25 along with the news that I was first in my age group it was icing on the cake. Zenon Bilas is a 7-time USA Barefoot Water Skiing Champion. He has over 30 years of teaching all levels of water skiers, including national and world champions. He has performed barefoot shows and water ski clinics on four continents with stops in the USA, Sweden, Belgium, Brazil, Japan, Lebanon, and China, including one show for over 500,000 people in Yueyang, China. He has authored hundreds of articles on boat tests, product reviews, and water ski coaching tips. And, you may remember a certain cartoon tiger waterskiing in a TV commercial for Frosted Flakes….that was Zenon skiing as Tony the Tiger’s body double! Zenon and I discussed how he got started on the water, tips for training, finding a coach, and driving the boat for tow sports, innovation on the manufacturing side, and more. With all Zenon has done and continues to do, it was impossible to cover everything we wanted to get to. I really hope I can get him on again for a follow up episode (or two!). Enjoy! On what got him interested in being on the water…..We were fishing. We went to a pond in Chicago and it was fun. We did that, and that winter they had a show on fishing in the Northwest Territory and that really intrigued us. That made us go out and buy a 7 ½ horsepower Mercury outboard. We started going to Wisconsin Dells and fishing on the river. We would put the motor on a Jon boat and go fishing. On moving into bigger boats…..Like a lot of things, once you get into it, you get into it. We bought a 15’ Silverline and it had an 85 horsepower Mercury. It was kind of a sports boat and we went fishing. It served both worlds. We would go to a place on the river, put the boat on shore, and go fishing from the beach. Wisconsin River had stripers, walleye, and occasionally we caught sturgeons. I remember driving that boat. You hear of people now buying their first boat being a 50-footer. I didn’t think of it until now but we had a progression. From pond to 7 ½ horsepower to 85 horsepower. We started from the smallest and learned. On watersports entering the picture…..It was being at the right place at the right time. We were in the Wisconsin Dells and we went to the Tommy Bartlett Water Ski Show. I tried skiing the year before that and the cottage came with a pair of Cypress Garden skis. But we never skied before. For some reason, I was the one to try it. We tried it and tried it and I couldn’t get up because we didn’t know what we were doing. We went back to fishing. The next summer we saw the show and that was the game changer. I saw water skiing and jumping and all the tricks they did and barefooting really intrigued me. On going from not getting up to hooked…..We would also boat on Round Lake in Northern IL. My brother bought a pair of skis and he learned from a friend. And that friend said he would help me. I didn’t want to get up on skis, I was into fishing. He was insistent and he got in the water and showed me how the skis and my legs should be positioned. I was more comfortable with him in the water with me. The first try I got up 50 or 60 feet. We tried one more time and boom, I got around the whole lake. The coaching was a big inspiration. Going from trial and error to having someone with me. I think that coaching in any discipline is really important. The coaching for me was watching the ski show. I would watch it over and over. I had to go up the ladder. I learned to get up on two skis, then I learned to slalom ski, get up on a single ski. That all was self-taught. On training for skiing…..I remember skiing so much one Sunday that when I landed back at the beach I couldn’t move. Back then I didn’t know what I was doing. Once you start coaching people and writing about it, you start thinking about it. When I train I push myself but in a good way where I can’t get hurt. I’m a believer that if you stay within a certain range of technique and not over training, that it’s hard to get hurt. So, what I do is a push myself but I pace myself. I’m in tune with my body so I know when I need to stop or take a break. I can tell when I teach other people that they don’t have that sensitivity. On what you can do off the water to see improvement on the water…..If you’re gonna focus on one main thing it’s eating right. I’ve been through this, I’ve gone and skied a ton and gone to the gym and I was getting out of shape because I wasn’t eating right. Eating right is the basic foundation so that any training you do after that will be complemented. If you don’t eat right your training won’t be as effective. I know a lot of people do yoga, it’s great for stretching. I’m not a big fan of doing too much at the gym because I see people who are hardcore at the gym and then they get hurt. Any kind of workout should be a light workout, stretching exercises, yoga or pilates; those are all great for skiing. You want a high strength-to-weight ratio. On what to look for in a good coach…..Have someone who has a really good understanding of technique. It’s not trial and error. There’s a lot more information now. Someone who understands body position., how you should be on your skis and on your feet. Someone who has a deeper thought about it than let’s go out and try it. On how to be a good tow sport driver…..If you want to learn to be a good driver, the main thing is to listen to the skier. It’s not about you, it’s about the skier. You have to listen to what they want and develop a sensitivity to what they want. Then you have to become sensitive to the surroundings and waterways, to seeing speed and how you accelerate, that you’re not abrupt, and be aware of traffic around you. Your job is to drive for the skier in tow, not just to drive for fun. On innovation in boat manufacturing…..The innovation on boats keeps getting better. You’re seeing boats that do specific things better than before. Unlike a lot of other segments of boating, the water sports industry cares about the wake. Every wake is different. The slalom wake is different than the wakeboard wake, which is different than the hot sport right now which is the wake surfing wake. The tow boat companies are creating features in the wake to make the experience better for the person behind the boat. On similarities and differences across tow sports…..There are some differences but a lot of similarities. The biggest similarity is the balance point. Your body position is very key to all those events. The key element is to have your weight centered over the middle of your feet. Most people ski or wakeboard more heel heavy. You can do a small change in your body position which will put your weight over the center of your feet and that’s a focus in all water sports. On advice for getting started…..With boating or getting into tow sports, it’s coaching. Absolutely have someone coach you. Don’t do it by trial and error. It’s going to take longer and you have a really good chance of forming bad habits. It’s harder to get rid of bad habits than to teach someone good habits. Get coaching right now, today, whatever level you’re at. You’ll progress much quicker and you’ll enjoy it more! There was SO much I did not get to with Zenon and we will have to talk again. His experiences competing at the highest level of the sport, traveling the world, writing for various publications, getting back into competition at the age of 55 and more are all things we didn’t get to tackle.
