Exploring Trauma and Recovery in Star Trek: DS9's "It's Only a Paper Moon"In this episode of Superhero Ethics, hosts Matthew and Riki examine Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's acclaimed episode "It's Only a Paper Moon" (Season 7, Episode 10). The episode stands out for its realistic portrayal of physical and psychological trauma as Ferengi character Nog returns from war with a lost leg and severe PTSD.How does DS9 differ from typical portrayals of trauma in media?Unlike most shows where characters quickly recover from injuries, DS9 takes the time to explore the authentic consequences of trauma. Matthew, who lost his own leg to amputation, provides unique insight into the episode's portrayal of Nog's experiences with a prosthetic limb. The episode examines how phantom pain can affect amputees and how others' awkward attempts at comfort often make things worse. Why does Nog retreat to the holosuite? When faced with his trauma, Nog finds refuge in a 1962 Las Vegas holosuite program featuring lounge singer Vic Fontaine. This controlled environment allows Nog to heal at his own pace without the pressure of others' expectations. The hosts discuss how Nog rediscovers parts of his Ferengi heritage during this healing process, using his cultural affinity for profit to help manage Vic's fictional casino. When does helpful support cross into harmful enabling? The episode delicately explores the transition between providing necessary space for grief and enabling harmful avoidance behaviors. As Nog becomes dependent on the holosuite, the show demonstrates how well-intentioned support can sometimes impede recovery when it prevents someone from ultimately facing reality.Additional topics covered:• The evolution of Nog's character from stereotypical Ferengi to complex individual• Vic Fontaine's unusual status as a self-aware holosuite character• Parallels to modern internet addiction and virtual escapism• How non-professionals sometimes provide more effective support than trained counselors• The frustration of seeing unrealistic injury recovery in action movies when you've experienced real trauma• The meaningful portrayal of Nog's temporary self-centeredness as a realistic trauma responseFrom "Just Another Character" to Central FocusThis episode stands out for placing two secondary characters—Nog and hologram Vic Fontaine—at its emotional center. The hosts praise the episode for its depth and nuance in handling difficult themes like trauma, recovery, and disability without falling into simplistic "good vs. bad" narratives about coping mechanisms. By focusing on these characters, DS9 delivers one of Trek's most meaningful examinations of the human experience. **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. It is with great sadness that I post this episode today. James Darren was a multi-talented actor and singer. From his iconic roles as Moondoggie in the Gidget films of the 60's to his starring roles in “The Guns of Navarone" and “T.J. Hooker,” along with his recurring role as Vic Fontaine in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” he wowed audiences around the world. Plus, with his Grammy nominated hit “Goodbye Cruel World,” he could do it all. And besides appearing on “Between the Lines” he was also a long-time friend. He passed this morning leaving millions of adoring fans with heartbreak. My wife and I are amongst them. In this episode we share so much of his kindness and talent that it should only bring back beautiful memories of this beautiful man.Support the show

This week, Bill & Dan look at the standout Season 7 episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, "It's Only a Paper Moon!" Nog returns to DS9 after losing his leg in the events of "The Siege of AR-558" in an effort to continue his recovery. Starfleet has put him on medical leave, but Nog wants nothing to do with the real world. He escapes into the holosuites and the Vic Fontaine program--but will he ever leave? Aron Eisenberg truly shines in this episode, and we'll talk about all the reasons why. Plus, we'll look at Nog's escapism and compare it to how many people--including us--have dealt with the pandemic the last couple of years. This is one you're not gonna want to miss, pally.

A plan is a beautiful thing, but how often do they actually go without a hitch? Never in this week's episodes! First up: Vic Fontaine's program has sprung a mafia-themed "jack-in-the-box" and it's going to take a classic heist to save the day in "Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang"! After that, Section 31 rears its ugly head yet again and Bashir thinks he has a scheme that can finally take them down in "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges"! Staying hidden this week is key on DS9. First up: Gul Dukat may have slithered his way into being Emissary of the Pah-wraiths, and might be hiding out with their cult on the decaying Empok Nor, but as always, he just wants Kira to admit what a cool guy he is in "Covenant." After that: with the pressures of war mounting a still-convalescing Nog decides to hide himself away on the holosuite with Vic Fontaine in "It's Only a Paper Moon." Also this week: the power of not giving a sh*t, Potsie, and the existential horror that is being Vic Fontaine. [Timestamps: "Covenant": 00:44; "Paper Moon": 43:57]

Nog recovers from the devastating wound that he received in an unorthodox way- by hiding in a holo-suite with Vic Fontaine. He may've only been a digital algorithm animated by photonic particles but his affable nature, velvet voice and tender street smart wisdom won over fans and star fleet officers alike (not to mention his way with the ladies) Now in the year 2020, the bad boys of podcasting are back to give Vic his due. Is he a beloved fan favorite or a contrived plot device? They discuss the power of music against the Dominion and unravel the twisted thread of fate that binds Vic Fontaine and Khan Noonien Singh. Computer, load Bashir 62.
The real-life Vic Fontaine, who is a real person, is featured in the episode. More proof the blurb guy at Netflix only watches the cold open and lots of Holodeck talk. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-measure-of-an-episode/message

Welcome to Twenty Dollars a Day, the podcast where we explore our favorite fictional characters in the Star Trek universe! Nathan and Eppy discuss the holodeck-hosted heist in S7E15 Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang. Vic Fontaine's lounge is suddenly taken over by a hidden variable in his always-on program, the bridge crew has to pull together to help out their holographic buddy. A loving homage to films like Ocean's Eleven, we really enjoyed both watching our friends make and execute on a plan, and the opportunity to talk about a holodeck episode that doesn't stem from technological disaster. Happy April, everyone! We're happy to take our third annual look at Star Trek holodeck episodes that follow on the themes of our first love, The Rockford FIles. Hope you enjoy it! We're hitting the old familiar places this week as we revisit "It's Only a Paper Moon"!New York Times bestselling author David Mack returns to the show this week to discuss an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine that explores one man's struggle to come to terms with loss and fear. Nog has survived the Siege of Ar-558 but at the cost of his leg and his self-confidence. When he turns to the holodeck for escape, he'll find that Vic Fontaine is more than just a singing hologram and that the key to life isn't winning or losing but choosing to continue playing the game. When Aron Eisenberg passed away in 2019, the world didn't just lose a husband and father and friend to many Star Trek fans; it also lost a performer of surprising depth and passion. Aron was a man who had experienced tragedy in his own life and when called upon to portray Nog's suffering, he imbued the role with an honest emotion that makes this one of DS9's finest hours. Not to be outdone, veteran performer James Darren brings his charm and musical talents to a role that is so much more than a holodeck subroutine. "Moon" is an episode that showcases two of the series's "supporting cast" but is an episode vital to Deep Space Nine's themes of the cost of war and the healing that comes after. On this episode, we talk about the conception and creation of "Moon" from Dave's perspective as co-writer, the original "Everybody Comes to Quark's" pitch, the episode's rarified status as one of Trek's few "sequels", the bravery of Aron Eisenberg as a performer, the toll that combat takes on servicemen and women, the multi-talented James Darren, the sometimes convoluted way in which TV writers collaborate, and the lack of individual ego in the writing staff that elevated the show's material. We also discuss having Ron Moore leave you hanging, "'Touched By An Angel' meets 'The Equalizer'", having your sub-plot take over the story, the apparently forgettable films of the '30s, the aesthetic of orthopedia devices in the Federation, Hitler walking out of your Axis and Allies hologame, "Commando Geordi", holodeck doggie bags, Dave talks about the things he tries to avoid when writing Trek, his work on "Lower Decks", and he shares a life-threatening experience that helped inspire the episode! There's no magic left in this steak!Follow Dave on Twitter and check out his other work!http://www.twitter.com/davidalanmackhttp://www.davidmack.proPre-order Dave's latest Dark Arts book, "The Shadow Commission"!https://amzn.to/3a34zm6Please consider becoming an organ donor!http://www.organdonor.govLearn the story behind your favorite Trek stories with Backtrekking!http://www.twitter.com/backtrekkingCroon with us on Facebook and Twitter and the Just Enough Trope Discord!http://www.facebook.com/eistpodhttp://www.twitter.com/eistpodhttps://discord.gg/UeytGNPBuy us a new casino on Patreon!http://www.patreon.com/eistpodSubscribe to the show on iTunes!https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/enterprising-individuals/id1113165661?mt=2

Remember, like, 10 days ago when we were all pretty sure that our dumbshit president stumbled ass-first into a war with Iran? Well, I do. And, my good friend, Ken Culver and I used it as a launching point(pardon the usage) to talk about heavy topics and trying not to go insane from the weight of our stupid world, how best to express ourselves, and let others express themselves in the ways they need. Notes: The Star Trek: Deep Space Nine character name I couldn't remember was "Vic Fontaine." The comic book issue I am referencing is Amazing Spider-Man vol. 2 #36.

Aron Eisenberg passed away and its heartbreaking to us and the Trek community, so we fast forward to season 7 and pay a drunk space nine tribute to Aron Eisenberg and his work on the show by talking about, "It's only a Paper Moon." one of our favorite Nog episodes. I'm joined by Drunk Space Nine Alumni, Mike Mann a.k.a. Manndroid who keeps things on track very poorly but aptly by being the Designated Runabout Pilot tonight.Special Note: Excuse all the sniffling, Starfleet boy had allergies to cheap wine.

The Rules of Acquisition: A Star Trek Deep Space Nine Podcast
War is hell. Sisko and crew get put in the middle of it. What does the end of History and the 90s have to do with this episode? WELL WE'RE GONNA TALK ABOUT IT. Salts vs Boots. Tuco Salamanca! Will Robinson! Neoliberalism! Why was this such a hard episode to get made? Is this a facile argument about war in general? Is the question of whether the war is just or necessary an important one to ask for this story? Contrast this to City on the Edge. Framing alien species against humans. Does Quark here epitomize an ideology that we've grown beyond? Hell is for Heroes. And that ain't us. Heinrich Colbe has some cred though. Leave Worf out of this one. Remember PCU? Does this suffer for the lack of Star Trek aspirations? Is the sermonizing about war is underthought? Rule 34 again: War is good for business. He almost changed the line. Nicole wasn't going to beam crouched. What songs do the troops play before battle? Oh Vic. Some of us hate you. Star Trek even turned the Beastie Boys into Vic Fontaine. Is Tuco Vargas? In praise of technobabble. Turns out with an episode this good we have to critique what it says, not how it says it. A violent instrument plays jazz of rage and sorrow on this week's Short Game. Ape Out is an intense top-down musical beat-em-up from developer Gabe Cuzzillo. We discuss the game's "virtual drummer", Saul Bass inspired art style, and hear a LOT from Nate about Star Trek's Vic Fontaine.
In Episode 15 of Random Trek Review, Matt and Andrew swing into the 1960s as they review the Deep Space Nine episode "It's Only A Paper Moon". They discuss the smooth ways of Vic Fontaine, the holodeck safeties, Nog's humanity, Star Trek's ability to transcend entertainment and much more! Subscribe on iTunes
The Rules of Acquisition: A Star Trek Deep Space Nine Podcast
There's a new self aware Hologram in the world of Star Trek. Deep Space Nine gets its resident nostalgia laced crooner and self help guru. Vic Fontaine, ladies and gentlemen. First off. What we liked about this. Then… all the rest. A self aware hologram? What makes him so special and different from Moriarty? Who is the brain genius auteur responsible for this? Remember swing? Is this a boomer episode? Who shot down the production until they final were able to cast this episode? How do the actors feel about the relationship finally kicking off? What does she see in him? How much of her side of it is missing? What are other ways to hook them up? Space drugs? We wrangle with season 6. Can we figure out what's going on? How toxic is it to overly romanticize things, such as the past? A common Star Trek problem? Does this predict incel culture? Shakaar: Total Chad. We take a small break to do a mini Gilmore Girls podcast before wrapping it up. Are we too tough on Vic? On Odo and Kira? Ira Stephen Behr? Welcome to another wild and wacky episode of everyone’s favorite DS9 Podcast! We’re delving deep into this serious and heartfelt episode about Nog dealing with the horrors of war by escaping into a world of fantasy, specifically Vic Fontaine’s 1960s Las Vegas nightclub, but we’re ALSO blowing the lid open on the legend of Jimmy Dar Dar, the greatest podracer of all time and TRUE winner of the Boonta Eve Classic, something you WON’T find in the history books! Beyond that, we’re also talking about superhero roller coasters, the 1994 Best Picture nominees, some classic Final Fantasy games, Clydes, The World of Vic Fontaine, an amazing reimagining of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and so much more! We will NEVER APOLOGIZE for the things we do, and neither should you for loving them!
Westworld and the Holodeck. A state-of-the-art entertainment complex where you can live out your wildest dreams, surrounded by people who look, sound, and even feel like flesh-and-blood. The sixth-season TNG episode “A Fistful of Datas” tips its (cowboy) hat to the 1973 film Westworld, in which a robot gunslinger runs amok in a Wild West fantasyland, terrorizing the hapless players whose fun day out has just turned into a nightmare. In this episode of Primitive Culture, hosts Tony Black and Duncan Barrett discuss the connections between Westworld’s amoral theme park and Star Trek’s holodeck. We consider the risks human beings will take for excitement, the moral cost of creating artificial beings for exploitation in games of sex and violence, and whether such complex systems can ever truly be kept under control. We’ve got bumpin’ jamz, party whistles, a crowd of friends that just won’t shut up and a 100% guarantee that someone is going to get topless during this episode! Not only that, but Kevin’s twin brother Paul is joining us because, wouldn’t you know it, it’s his birthday too! In true party fashion, we’re all getting together to talk about the moral gray area that Vic Fontaine walks in order to bring two hearts together, which characters from Deep Space Nine we would cast in various roles in Cheer’s, how gosh darn awkward and alike we are to Odo and so much more. It's Only a Paper Moon. Events in Star Trek—even tragic ones—rarely have lasting consequences. Deep Space Nine changed that with arcs that took place during the Dominion War. In particular, in the final season, Nog's injuries in battle led to a deep exploration of the lasting impact of a single moment in time—and they did it with the usual DS9 mix of serious commentary and humor. In this episode of The Ready Room, we're joined by Zachary Fruhling and Matthew Rushing to discuss Nog's retreat to the holosuite, his struggle to come to terms with the physical and emotional damage of his experiences in “The Siege of AR-558,” and the counseling tag-team of Ezri Dax and Vic Fontaine who brought him back to reality. In our news segment, we discuss additional shooting (reported as reshoots by most media) for Star Trek Beyond, a special agreement between CBS and Paramount that dictated a six-month post-film waiting period for Star Trek's return to TV, and Rod Roddenberry joining the new series as Executive Producer. Elementary closes out a run of strong episodes with a Law & Order: Criminal Intent pastiche that limps to the finish. Also, Deep Space Nine goes on a weird bender, with an episode all about Vic Fontaine, an episode about Ezri that's great until it's about Ezri anymore, and the (thankfully) final mirror universe episode, which is hot garbage.
Two hours and twenty-five minutes. Strap in, kids.First, we celebrate the glorious return of Elementary, with its third season premiere, "Enough Nemesis to Go Around." Between the magic bullet magnets and sidewalk baton dueling, we reaffirm just how much we love this show. Then, we move on to a glorious banquet of Deep Space Nine episodes. To wit:"In the Pale Moonlight" - Perhaps the most legendary episode of the entire series -- and J.'s favorite -- sparks an impassioned discussion of its true merits. Is the confessional structure a showy distraction, or is it key to the episode's impact?"His Way" - Never mind that shit, it's VIC FONTAINE, Y'ALL. There are a hundred reasons why this episode shouldn't work. And yet..."The Reckoning" - Is this a Star Trek episode, or a mural painted on the side of someone's van in 1978?And finally, we discuss the Mad Men episode "Shoot" with what little voice we have left. Stop the presses, Pete Campbell is a dick.Next week, we finish the first season of Veronica Mars, with "M.A.D.," "A Trip to the Dentist," and "Leave It to Beaver," plus the Mad Men episode "Long Weekend." And Elementary, too. We better stock up on lozenges.
Welcome to another pulse pounding episode of SFP - NOW.This week Raissa and Ian discuss last weekends episode of 'Doctor Who' and what implications it could well hold as the new series winds down. Our featured interview this week is with none other than Singer and Actor James Darren who is best known to SciFi Fans as Vic Fontaine from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine or as Dr. Tony Newman from the classic sixties television show 'The Time Tunnel'.So zone out and tune in for another brain frazzling episode of SFP-NOW. Vic Fontaine and DS9's Jazz. Deep Space Nine benefited from more of a hands-off approach from the studio compared to the other series. And the moment at which the writing staff really knew they could do whatever they wanted was when they introduced Vic Fontaine and no one said "stop." In this episode of Melodic Treks, Colin takes you on a trip to Quark's Bar to spend some time with DS9's King of Swing. We talk about the "man," his music, the effect he had on those around him, and, of course, we venture into Vic's real-life counterpart, James Darren—who, in addition to working with the DS9 crew, also worked with none other than William Shatner. Thankfully, in that case, no singing was involved.
His Way Commentary. Odo spent much of the series brooding over Kira, and it seemed like he was never going make the move. As it turns out, all he really needed was a little jazz and a push from a well-intentioned lightbulb. In this episode of The Orb hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing bring you a commentary for “His Way” and discuss how Odo went from a square to a cool cat, how easy holograms make practice perfect, and how Vic Fontaine's premiere on the show was not only the perfect fit for DS9 but also helped the Constable break our of his shell.
Vic Fontaine. Deep Space Nine always marched to the beat of its own drum, but with the introduction of a 1962 jazz lounge in the sixth-season episode “His Way” the show began to swing, too. Vic Fontaine was only on the show for a short while, but in the ten episodes in which he appears or is mentioned he became a key part of the family and touched the lives of the entire crew. He tickled the eardrums of the audience, too… and probably made you tap your foot once or twice. In this episode of The Orb hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing take a look at the guy who knew what he was—a light bulb—and how the leading man of holoprogram Bashir 62 added so much to the uniqueness of DS9 and helped provide some of the show's most touching moments.
Badda-Bing Badda-Bang. Just before Deep Space Nine wrapped up with a ten-episode arc that resolved the Dominion War, the crew took one last moment to cut loose and enjoy themselves—and they did it in the name of one of their dearest friends. He may be nothing more than photons and forcefields, but Vic Fontaine influenced the lives of almost everyone on DS9 in a positive way. So when his hotel was bought and his livelihood threatened, Miles, Jules, and the rest of the crew knew they had to help. In this episode of The Orb hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing join in the holographic fun to discuss Vic, his role on the station, Sisko's issues with 1962, and why Starfleet could learn a thing or two from Ezri's choice of outfit.
Photonic Lifeforms. TNG had Moriarty. DS9 had Vic Fontaine. But Voyager... had the motherload. From the EMH to Michael Sullivan, were these characters real or were they just lights and computer programs? In this episode of To The Journey, Lorrie, Charlynn, and Tristan go in deep to tackle the topic of photonic life; but instead of answering the question they may just create a few more.
