On April 9, 2025 Theater of War Productions presented its third installment of a new long-form journalism series at WNYC. The acclaimed actors Oscar Isaac (Dune, Ex Machina), Kathryn Erbe (Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Oz), and Bill Camp (The Queen's Gambit, The Night Of), performed “I Don't Want to Die”: Needing Mental Health Care, He Got Trapped in His Insurer's Ghost Network, written by Max Blau for ProPublica, to frame a powerful conversation about health insurance, ghost networks, and the challenges many Americans face accessing mental health care when they need it most. More information and a video recording are at https://www.wnyc.org/story/i-dont-want-die Theater of War Productions presents community-specific, theater-based projects that address pressing public health and social issues. In honor of Veterans' Day, we're revisiting an episode of Art Works that tells the origin story of the transformative project  Theater of War Productions. Co-founded by classicist, translator, and director Bryan Doerries, Theater of War began with a simple yet profound concept: presenting staged readings of Sophocles' plays Ajax and Philoctetes to military communities as a means of addressing both the challenges veterans face and the lasting impact of war on families and relationships. In this episode, Doerries recounts how he was inspired to bring these ancient military tragedies to contemporary audiences, believing they would unlock conversations around trauma and healing. With excerpts of performances by actors Bill Camp, David Strathairn and Adam Driver, this episode explores the initial journey of Theater of War and its impact on military communities, offering insight into how ancient drama opens pathways for veterans to process their experiences.  Now, with over 20 specialized programs, Theater of War Productions reaches diverse communities worldwide, addressing not only the struggles of veterans but also broader public health and social justice issues, including homelessness, racialized violence, and natural disasters. Doerries also discusses the arts' power to heal, showing how storytelling and shared experience allow individuals to confront, process, and share pain. Theater of War taps into this capacity, creating safe spaces that support connection, resilience, and recovery.

With the holiday season comes Terminus descending into scheduling hell, as is tradition. We like to think of it as a fun mystery, like opening presents on Christmas morning: when will the new episode arrive? Will a random bonus episode get released with zero notice? How blackout drunk will one or both hosts be? To answer in order: right now, maybe at some point, and neither, unfortunately. But to that last query, maybe we should have been, considering just how demented and gorked the majority of the music on today's episode is. To wit: Onslaught Kommand, a Chilean war metal band rooted in primordial death, grind, and d-beat traditions whose thirst for gore is matched only by their hunger for rumbling bass. Next: the return of Geheimnisvoll, first featured on Terminus in 2020, on a split with Russian newcomers КaБah (pronounced Kaban for our Occidental listeners.) Geheimnisvoll further iterates on its Franco-Finnish-rooted sound, now pushing more toward the former than the latter, with epic melodies tempered by an austere, scowling mood. КaБah takes a very different route: glum, hermetic, minimal, and seemingly equally influenced by both Ildjarn and primitive industrial. Either side should be sufficient to upset roommates, housepets, and any vegetation within a hundred yard radius alike. Following is the arrival of the second full length from a band mentioned only by TBMG in hushed whispers: Wrok. Infamous legends of the Dutch underground, Wrok play the most putrid and primordial of raw black metal exclusively, jerking and lurching through track after track of basement noise hell, reflecting an era and style of black metal now seemingly forgotten except by the most wretched among us. The song structures are nearly incoherent, the melodies are an afterthought, and the production is merely the word LOUD repeated a dozen times, and it's one of the coolest things to happen all year. 0:00:00 - Intro/Onslaught Kommand - Onslaught Kommand (Godz ov War Productions) 0:23:12 - Geheimnisvoll/КaБah - Split (Nithstang Productions) 1:05:47 - Interlude - Warwulf - “Follow The Wolves to My Grave,” fr. The Greeks understood that adolescence is a time of infinite possibility. Does our current narrow definition of achievement truly enable our kids to access that wide variety of opportunities? Our guest is Bryan Doerries, founding and artistic director of Theater of War. Bryan explains how the Greeks trained their young people for the vicissitudes of life and empowered them to express themselves. And while they trained their youth for participation in either the military and/or civic affairs-they balanced this with encouraging and empowering their youth to explore the world and take risks, so that they could and would experience challenges, engage their creativity and problem solving skills, struggle with discomfort on the physical and emotional levels, and be informed and emboldened to make difficult decisions. Adolescence is a time of dynamic change. Neuroscience has shown that not only are their bodies changing rapidly through the twenties, but their brains are still developing into their mid-20s. This is the time, the teenage years into young adulthood, where they should be exposed to a range of situations, experiences and opportunities so that they can flourish, even in the face of disappointment or mistakes.Perhaps we've put up too many guardrails around them?

What if our experience of ancient Greek plays, rather than involving stultifying boredom, could instead evoke powerful emotions? Bryan Doerries–author of many books involving ancient Greek plays and Artistic Director of Theater of War Productions–talks with Julie and Eve about the tragic loss in his life that caused Greek plays to suddenly begin “sp[eaking] directly to me as if they've been written for me.” As a director, he has since sought “audience[s] that have experienced the extremities of life”--he's performed at hospitals, for the military, in prisons, for addicts, and for the survivors of natural disasters. Bryan discusses what it is about ancient Greek plays that make them resonate all these centuries later. He also details why the audience discussions that follow the play can be more meaningful than the performances themselves. Finally, Bryan explains how the protocols of theatergoing today are a “kind of violence.” Bryan Doerries is a writer, director, and translator. His theater company presents dramatic readings of seminal plays and texts to frame community conversations about pressing issues of public health and social justice. He has received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Kenyon College. And he was named Public Artist in Residence for the city of New York. Bryan's most recent book, which offers a contemporary translation of ancient Greek tragedies, is Oedipus Trilogy: New Versions of Sophocles' Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone. Okay, here's the thing: recording this episode was grueling. Not because of the records but because of various technical issues which led to us wrapping up recording at 4 in the morning, which was just like hell, and not in the cool way. It gets a little weird and delirious. I'm still tired. I might be tired forever. Here's what you get: Apparition of Sunlight is in part the sequel to Fin, one of TBMG's favorite USBM bands, and it doesn't disappoint. Their debut demo/EP/what have you is a brilliant if brief explosion of outlaw rock with a bunch of crazy guitar technique and a brilliant dual vocal performance and if you like this show you probably bought it already, but just in case you haven't, please do so now. You won't be disappointed. Beastlurker plays melodic black/death that sounds like if Sacramentum was the soundtrack to a house party at the beginning of a teen slasher movie and it's very fun. It's self-aware, over the top, and extremely technically accomplished. Satan has the fastest motorcycle in the world and he wears extremely big sunglasses. Ild exists to dissuade you of the notion that being a Norwegian peasant would be somehow cool or fun- it's music about being cold, tired, and concerned that you won't have enough bread to make it through winter. Like the record, our review is weird and wandering and offers more questions than it does answers. It's a bleak experience but one with a lot of depth that keeps you coming back for more. 8 Hour Animal is a weirdo mix of various industrial and noise styles and a good chunk of the review is just us figuring out how to describe it to an audience of metalheads. It's all over the map in extreme electronic music but mixes in just enough extreme metal structures and textures that it sometimes sounds like listening to Godflesh at quadruple speed in a wind tunnel, and if that doesn't sound inherently cool to you I don't know what you're even doing here.   0:00:00 - Intro/Terminus News 0:13:35 - Apparition of Sunlight - Wilt of Roses Crimson (Tour de Garde) 0:50:52 - Beastlurker - Celestial Henchwhores Aflame (Godz of War Productions) 1:36:19 - Interlude - Thy Primordial - “For Fires to Burn,” fr. It's double episode day, boys! In addition to a sprawling interview with Lori Bravo of Nuclear Death is your regularly scheduled session of extreme metal discussion. This episode features four records with numerous crossing threads which will be familiar to regular listeners- the resurgence of cavernous black/death metal, the atavistic urges of primordial extreme metal, and the concept of songwriting sprawl vs. clearer organization. As usual we pride ourselves on our lack of approachability, and today's records will undoubtedly satisfy the tastes of anyone who wants their metal weird and monolithic. Starting the session is the new EP by Denmark's Broder, a barbaric attack of primitive black/death metal from the Korpsand Circle. Broder resembles many things around the edges- war metal, Celtic Frost, primitive deathrash- but finds its own identity in its abstraction. This is a short record that punches far above its weight in sheer intensity and aggression, and is an absolutely essential listen for those whose favorite parts of extreme metal from when it was first slithering out of the primordial ooze. On a completely different note is Luminous Veil, who perform a thoroughly eclectic style of... symphonic post-black with breakcore elements? Its constituent parts are as diverse as possible, but they add up to a whole with a distinct vision. Joyous explosions of arcing riffs, chiming synths, and hyperspeed drum machine theatrics make for a record which will undoubtedly be divisive, but likely exactly what a few people have been looking for their whole lives. After our break comes two sides of the cavernous black/death coin. First up is Serpentrance, a Russian band who imbue the traditional sounds of Profanatica and Archgoat with a granite slab of minimal, crushing doomdeath. Other bands play; Serpentrance churns with a terrible weight and certainty which brings to mind some of the ugliest parts of modern doom and sludge. You know it's good when even the fast parts sound slow, like the band is struggling to complete a song while being waterboarded. Concluding the evening's festivities is a listener submission. Thaumaturgy also plays a cavernous style of black/death/doom metal, but coming from a radically different direction, more interested in pointelistically etching out abstract, colorful riffs like a Jackson Pollock interpretation of Onward to Golgotha. It's abstract and vertiginous music more concerned with dizzying the listener than crushing them, but when the final car on the rollercoaster starts its descent, the G-forces equal that of any better known ride.   0:00 - Intro/Terminus News feat. “Remember,” Bryan Doerries likes to say in both physical and virtual gatherings, “you are not alone in this room — and you are not alone across time.” With his public health project, Theater of War, he is activating an old alchemy for our young century. Ancient stories, and texts that have stood the test of time, can be portals to honest and dignified grappling with present wounds and longings and callings that we aren’t able to muster in our official places now. It’s an embodiment of the good Greek word catharsis — releasing both insight and emotions that have had no place to go, and creating an energizing relief. And it is now unfolding in the “amphitheater” of Zoom that Sophocles could not have imagined.Bryan Doerries — is co-founder, principal translator, and artistic director of Theater of War Productions.
