Joseph Dolce; born October 13, 1947) is an American-Australian singer, songwriter, poet and essayist. Dolce achieved international recognition with his multi-million-selling novelty song, "Shaddap You Face", released worldwide under the name of his one-man show, Joe Dolce Music Theatre, in 1980–1981. The single reached number one in 15 countries. It has sold more than 450,000 copies in Australia and continues to be the most successful Australian-produced single worldwide, selling an estimated six million copies. It reached No. 1 on the Australian Kent Music Report Singles Chart for eight weeks from November 1980. 1947–1977: Early year Dolce was born in 1947 in Painesville, Ohio, the eldest of three children to Italian American parents. He graduated from Thomas W. Harvey High School in 1965. During his senior year, he played the lead role of Mascarille in Moliere's Les Précieuses Ridicules for a production staged by the French Club of Lake Erie Frie College, which was his first time on stage, acting and singing an impromptu song he created from the script. The play was well-received and his performance was noted by director Jake Rufli, who later invited him to be part of his production of Jean Anouilh's Eurydice. His co-star in Les Précieuses Ridicules was a sophomore on a creative writing scholarship at Lake Erie College, Carol Dunlop, who introduced him to folk music, poetry and the writings of William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway. Dunlop later married the Argentine novelist Julio Cortazar. Dolce attended Ohio University, majoring in architecture, from 1965 to 1967 before deciding to become a professional musician. While attending college at Ohio University, in Athens, Ohio, he formed various bands including Headstone Circus, with Jonathan Edwards who subsequently went on as a solo artist to have a charting hit song in the US ("Sunshine"). Edwards subsequently recorded five Dolce songs including, "Athens County", "Rollin' Along", "King of Hearts", "The Ballad of Upsy Daisy" and "My Home Ain't in the Hall of Fame", the latter song becoming an alt country classic, also recorded by Robert Earl Keen, Rosalie Sorrels, JD Crowe & the New South and many others. 1978–1984: Move to Australia, "Boat People" and "Shaddap You Face" Dolce relocated to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, in 1978 and his first single there was "Boat People"—a protest song on the poor treatment of Vietnamese refugees—which was translated into Vietnamese and donated to the fledgling Vietnamese community starting to form in Melbourne. His one-man show, Joe Dolce Music Theatre, was performed in cabarets and pubs with various line-ups, including his longtime partner, Lin Van Hek.  In July 1980, he recorded the self-penned 'Shaddap You Face", for the Full Moon Records label, at Mike Brady's new studios in West Melbourne. When in Ohio, Dolce would sometimes visit his Italian grandparents and extended family—they used the phrases "What's the matter, you?" and "Eh, shaddap", which Dolce adapted and used in the song. He wrote the song about Italians living in Australia and first performed it at Marijuana House, Brunswick Street, Fitzroy in 1979. It became a multi-million-selling hit, peaking at No. 1 on the Australian Kent Music Report Singles Chart for eight weeks from November 1980,in the UK from February 1981 for three weeks, and also No. 1 in Germany, France, Fiji, Puerto Rico, the Canadian province of Quebec, Austria, New Zealand and Switzerland. Dolce received the Advance Australia Award in 1981. The song has had hundreds of cover versions over the decades including releases by artists as diverse as Lou Monte, Sheila (France), Andrew Sachs (Manuel, of Fawlty Towers), actor Samuel L. Jackson and hip-hop legend KRS-One. In 2018, the first Russian language version was released by two of Moscow's most popular singers, Kristina Orbakaite and Philipp Kirkoroy. The song has been translated into fifteen languages, including an aboriginal dialect. By February 1981, it had become Australia's best-selling single ever selling 290,000 copies, entering the Guinness Book of World Records and surpassing the previous record of 260,000 copies by Brady's own "Up There Cazaly". "Shaddap You Face" has continued to be licensed and recorded by other artists and companies since its release in 1980 with its most recent appearance, in 2021, as part of the US series The Morning Show (aka, Morning Wars in Australia.) Follow up single, "If You Wanna Be Happy" was released in 1981 and charted in Australia and New Zealand. In December 1981, Dolce released the album Christmas in Australia, which peaked at number 92 on the Australian chart. 1984–present With Lin Van Hek , he formed various performance groups including Skin the Wig, La Somnambule (1984) and the ongoing Difficult Women (1993). Van Hek and Dolce co-wrote "Intimacy", for the soundtrack of the 1984 film The Terminator, now part of the US Library of Congress collection. He was a featured lead actor in the Australian film Blowing Hot and Cold (1988). He has continued to perform solo and with Van Hek as part of their music-literary cabaret Difficult Women. In 2010, two of his photos were selected for publication in the US journal, Tupelo Quarterly. Since 2009, he has been a prolifically published poet in Australia. In 2010, he won the 25th Launceston Poetry Cup at the Tasmanian Poetry Festival. His poems were selected for Best Australian Poems 2014 & 2015. He was the winner of the 2017 University of Canberra Vice-Chancellor's Health Poetry Prize, for a choral libretto, longlisted in the same year for the University of Canberra Vice-Chancellor's Poetry Prize and included in the Irises anthology. He longlisted for the 2018 University of Canberra Vice-Chancellor's Poetry Prize and was included in the Silence anthology. Victoria's concerning outbreak of the highly infectious Delta strain of Covid-19 has been linked to a returned traveller, though questions remain about how it leaked into the community. The outbreak, known as the West Melbourne cluster, now has at least 14 confirmed cases linked to it, all of which are the Delta strain.Victoria's Acting Premier James Merlino confirmed authorities have now found a genomic match between this cluster and a returned traveller who entered hotel quarantine on May 8 after arriving from Sri Lanka."While we have a genomic link, we do not currently have an epidemiological link, and further investigations are under way to see if we are able to establish any contact between the returned traveller and these families," he said."There's currently no definitive understanding of where a transmission events may have occurred but we are investigating all possibilities from the plane to travel to hotel."Victoria recorded two new locally acquired cases overnight, bringing the total number of infections in the state's outbreak to 85.There was also one case confirmed in an overseas traveller currently in hotel quarantine. It comes after 11 new infections were confirmed yesterday, with two of those reported late on Sunday.'Four main theories'The returned traveller tested positive to the virus the same day he arrived in Melbourne and was transferred from the Novotel Ibis quarantine hotel to the Holiday Inn health hotel on May 14 before being released from quarantine on May 23.Investigations have so far revealed there were 24 people on the same plane as the case, with all crew and passengers testing negative.Of the 268 staff who worked at the Ibis hotel on May 8 and 9, and the 360 staff at the health hotel, there were no positive tests identified. All 12 residents housed in the same Novotel Ibis have tested negative.Deputy chief health officer Allen Cheng said this suggests there has been transmission either directly from person-to-person or indirectly via unidentified cases to the family and the community."The investigation is continuing but there is four main theories and some of them are more or less likely," Professor Cheng said."The first possibly is that the case transmitted to or was infected by someone — another passenger on the plane — and that person has gone on to infect someone in the community."The second possibility is that the case transmitted after he left hotel quarantine. The third is that the case transmitted to a staff member somewhere along their journey from the airport to transport to the first hotel to transport to the second hotel and then out to the community, and then the fourth possibility is that the case transmitted to a hotel resident who has then transmitted to the community after their quarantine stay."The West Melbourne cluster has become a focal point in the race to contain Victoria's outbreak because of how fast the variant can spread.Victorian chief health officer Professor Brett Sutton said the variant was "more dangerous" than others and that 75 per cent of people catch the strain when there is a case living with them.He said that means the state is "racing against the clock" to contain it.Melbourne lockdown still on track to liftMelbourne's two-week lockdown is set to end at 11.59pm on Thursday (local time), with senior Victorian Government sources telling the Herald Sun they are very confident there will not be another extension. However, the one thing that could force authorities to keep lockdown restrictions in place would be a significant rise in mystery cases.Eased restrictions similar to those currently in place across regional Victoria are expected to be introduced in Melbourne once the lockdown ends and could include caps on private and public gatherings, density limits for venues and businesses and mask-wearing indoors.Prime Minister Scott Morrison added his voice to the growing number of people calling for an end to Melbourne's lockdown.The...

The Victorian government is facing increasing pressure this morning to lift Melbourne's lockdown amid a string of low case numbers in the state and as the city enters day 11 of its fourth lockdown. All eyes will be on Monday's numbers after officials in the state refused to budge on Sunday despite pressure from fed-up Victorians and business groups to end the lockdown early.Victoria recorded four new positive local cases of Covid-19 on Sunday, including two in aged care, but the risks posed by the Delta variant are forcing officials to be cautious.Acting Victorian premier James Merlino said lockdown is likely to run until midnight Thursday, citing the highly infectious Delta variant covid mutation which has struck 10 Victorians already.Mr Merlino said the state is living in a “different environment” with the new variant compared to its lockdown last year.“There's a reason why public health is so concerned about the Delta variant,” he said. “It is much, much more infection than what we were dealing with last year.”“The last thing we want to see is this variant of the virus getting out, and becoming uncontrollable,” he said.“I want to get there as quickly as you do.”Mystery still surrounds how the cluster began in West Melbourne with “health investigators” scouring sequencing results from labs across the country. The outbreak in West Melbourne has grown to 10 cases of the Delta variant with a primary school teacher the latest to test positive.Mr Merlino said his “expectation” was by the end of lockdown on Thursday, “we'll be in a position to have further easings of restrictions in regional Victoria and careful easing of restrictions in Melbourne.”He went on to say the decision would be based on public health advice.“We've just got to drive this thing to the ground.”“We do not have the luxury of picking and choosing the public health advice that we receive a stop in I hate going into lockdown, like every single Victorian I want to be out of lockdown as quickly as possible, the way to do that is for people to get tested, for people if you are eligible to get your vaccination, for people to follow the rules.”But the financial pressure is increasing day by day for both businesses and residents. A survey by Tenants Victoria showed 66 per cent of respondents said they were financially impacted by lockdown. An estimated average loss was $817.Deputy chief health officer Allen Cheng said lifting the lockdown was a “day by day proposition” but added that Thursday's planned easing of restrictions, was “our expectation”.“If we can, we will,” he said of it potentially lifting early.Mr Cheng said health authorities are examining cases carefully and working with other labs to see if there is any further information that can be obtained from specimens regarding the state's hunt for the delta variant outbreak.Chief executive of the Australian Industry Group Innes Willox has called for the Victorian government to devise an immediate path out of lockdown to save the state's businesses.“This lockdown has been marked by exaggerated language and doomsday prophesies from Victoria's health leaders that have not come to pass,” he said.Currently, he says it's costing the economy nearly $360 million.Last week, Professor MacIntyre told the ABC's Patricia Karvelas the variant spreading in Melbourne is “more transmissible” and “more contagious” and that it has a particular mutation that's “more likely to make it more vaccine resistant than that strain, so that's a big concern”.“There's more virus in the air, we know that SARS Covid-2 is airborne so an area where someone has been indoors might be more at risk with this particular virus.“The biggest risk is breathing in the virus through contaminated air indoors, in settings that are poorly ventilated.“The stakes have been raised with this variant because we know its more transmissible.”“The pandemic is worse today than it was a year ago and there are new variants emerging regula...

Erika Gofton is an artist based in Melbourne, and her work is fundamentally about empathy.  She is especially interested in exploring the intersubjective relationship of mother and child, in particular that liminal state of adolescence; the heightened internal fear and anxiety of being close yet distant in the same breath. Erika is also the founder and Director of The Art Room, an independent art school in West Melbourne.  In this episode we discuss art education in depth - from Erika’s challenging experiences at university to creating art classes and sharing what she wishes she’d learned at art school with her students. We also chat about how becoming a mother has positively impacted her practice, community, honesty and being an introvert.   / Erika’s TWS portrait and interview is on our website at thiswildsong.com.au/erika-gofton/ / See Erika’s work at erikagofton.com / Learn more about The Art Room the-art-room.com.au   Music: Rapture by Myfawny Hunter myfanwyhunter.com Editing: Alana Helbig alanahelbig.com   To support TWS and continue the conversation go to patreon.com/thiswildsong If you like what you hear please Subscribe, Review and Share!

Rick Shea is the owner of our local comic book store Famous Faces And Funnies and he agreed to sit down and talk to us about the current state of the comic industry, what is selling in his store, and what he thinks the future holds. FFF is really no bullshit the best comic store I've ever been in, and I always hit the local bookstores wherever we travel. The staff knows their stuff, are always friendly, and the place is just cool. Who else has a giant Bender painted on their wall? I ask you who else? During the talk we dive into whether comci book movies sell books, the mistakes Marvel have made, and many more subjects.
