This week on Select, we tap into the raw energy of Tunisia's underground scene with XZ5000. The Swiss-based DJ and producer's sets are notorious for being abrasive and unexpected, weaving gritty textures with playful grooves that keep the dancefloor on all toes from start to finish. In this mix, XZ5000 spins a genre-hopping mix that kicks off with slow-burning ambient soundscape before unravelling into a labyrinth of jagged percussion, warped techno patterns and trance-flecked basslines, embellished with broken rhythms and noise textures. The set features a selection of eclectic tunes, such as Felix Fleer's ‘Eden Prime', Isabel Soto and Kevin Ferhati's ‘Wildflower' and Chlär's ‘Cipe Ortni'.

“It's a big picture approach. I love it because our kids are going to have a future.”The phrase “more than the sum of its parts” shouldn't really apply when the parts in question are as significant in their own manner as Wildflower Beer, Organically Greenwood and Voyager Craft Malt. Yet there can be no denying that these pioneering operations are stronger together – their impact magnified by their ongoing collaboration.Since first discovering each other, the trio – respectively a brewer favouring native, wild and organic ingredients, a farmer exploring innovative regeneration techniques, and a maltster of world-beating ingenuity – have encouraged each other to push their ideas further, to chase their wildest dreams, and to inspire others along the way.We sat down with two of them – Wildflower's Topher Boehm and Organically Greenwood's Chris Greenwood – at an event conceived by the third, the Stu Whytcross-curated Grainstock. They told us about their first encounters, the friendship forged between their families, the exploration and experimentation they've enjoyed together, and their hopes for the future of grain, regen farming, sustainable brewing practices and the planet itself. They're fascinating and eloquent guests who take us from brewing with saltbush in Belgium to old man Ivan and his crop-enhancing “voodoo juice” with plenty of insight and laughter along the way.Due to some unexpected and insurmountable gremlins in the system, which we only discovered three hours before this episode was due to be published, there's no full intro this week. Will and James had discussed the week's news – two more venue closures in the local beer world, a fledgling brewpub changing tastes on the Murray, and the new “Northern IPA” style – but instead you just get a brief word from James before the main course. We're always keen for feedback on the show, which you can provide here (just don't mention this week's intro), as well as nominations for good beer citizens in our Have You Done A Rallings? campaign and wonderful breweries you'd like to see named Bluestone Yeast Brewery of the Month. A new study led by scientists at Durham University has uncovered that commercially sourced wildflower seeds, widely used in meadow creation and biodiversity projects, could unintentionally harm native wildflowers in Britain. Researchers focused on red campion (Silene dioica), a familiar and widespread species often included in wildflower mixes and found that plants from commercial seed suppliers are not the same as those growing naturally in the wild. The importance of protecting native wildflowers The team grew seeds from ten wild populations across Great Britain alongside two commercial seed sources in controlled garden experiments. They measured plant size, flowering patterns, and genetic variation. The results revealed clear differences where commercial plants were larger and more vigorous than wild ones, a sign that cultivation has already shaped them. Although both commercial and wild plants showed high genetic diversity, the commercial ones were genetically distinct, suggesting they come from narrow or shared origins. This distinction matters because if commercial plants are planted on a large scale, they may cross-pollinate with local wildflowers. Such gene flow could reduce or even erase local adaptations that wild populations have developed over centuries to cope with their unique environments. In the long term, these risks making populations less resilient to pests, diseases, or climate change, and may change the way ecosystems function. Lead author of the study Dr Adrian Brennan of Durham University added: "The results show that it is important to consider within-species variation." The study confirms that even a common and abundant species like red campion is vulnerable to being altered by restoration practices. If this can happen to such a widespread wildflower, the risks may be even greater for rarer or more isolated species. The findings underline the need for restoration projects to use local, genetically varied seed to maintain the natural patterns of diversity that underpin healthy ecosystems. With wildflower planting becoming more popular across the UK to support pollinators and enhance biodiversity, the research issues a timely warning. The authors call for urgent, evidence-based guidelines to inform seed sourcing policies. They suggest that projects should follow the precautionary principle, unless proven otherwise, restoration efforts should use locally sourced seeds rather than mass-produced commercial stock. This work adds to a growing body of evidence that well-meaning restoration can have unintended consequences. By providing a case study of red campion, the research also offers a framework for assessing the evolutionary impacts of restoration in other wildflower species. What if the cure for our anxious, overconnected lives is right outside the door? In this deeply human conversation, Ruth Chou Simons—artist, author, and mom of six—joins Ginny to explore how beauty, especially in nature, becomes a real antidote to hurry, worry, and screen-saturated living. From Jesus' invitation to “consider the lilies” to the way wildflowers preach resilience, individuality, and dependence, Ruth shows how getting outside forms our souls as much as it strengthens our kids. You'll hear vivid stories: morning glories as a picture of friendships that ebb and bloom; the extra-beautiful columbine as a reminder not to shrink back; the ache of a changing home as children launch, and the bluebell pointing us toward a truer, lasting home. Ruth also shares the moment her son suffered a serious mountain-biking injury—and how she painted wildflowers in the ICU, choosing to shift her gaze from fear to the faithful Gardener. Together, she and Ginny talk about making unhurried lives in hurried times, giving our families “dosing and spacing” for wisdom, and packing a small “to-go” kit of tactile hobbies so we reach for creation, not just a screen, when life turns. Listen in if you're longing for a gentler rhythm, a sturdier hope, and a practical way to invite beauty into your ordinary days—starting with one walk, one flower, one moment of attention. Tezza Barton bootstrapped the Tezza app from a two-person passion project into a 25M+ download, $38M/year creative-tech brand—with just 15 employees and zero paid ads for the first four years. In this interview, Tezza breaks down the scrappy path from negative bank balances and collage kits in a 250-sq-ft apartment to building a category-defining editing app and community that creatives actually love. From community-led growth and brand-first product design to pricing pivots, lean teams, and culture-shifting collabs, you'll learn exactly how she scaled profitably while staying fan-obsessed and creatively uncompromising. What you'll learn from this interview: • How Tezza grew a bootstrapped, creator-led app to 25M+ downloads and ~$38M revenue • The community-first playbook: DMs, feedback loops, and building demand before launch • Product-led marketing: naming filters (e.g., “Wildflower”), seasonal drops, and experiential launches • Pricing and retention: recovering from a bumpy subscription rollout and increasing LTV • Why a lean, high-leverage team can out-execute bigger competitors • Collaboration strategy: pitching value, co-creating effects, and tapping partner audiences • Creative brand building: designing an app like a beauty brand, not a utility • Where AI helps (ops, grunt work) without replacing human taste, curation, and intent By the end of this interview, you'll walk away with a proven roadmap to build, market, and scale a profitable consumer app—so you can turn audience insight and great creative into durable, compounding growth SAVE 50% ON OMNISEND FOR 3 MONTHS Get 50% off your first 3 months of email and SMS marketing with Omnisend with the code FOUNDR50. The Kankakee mallow is one of the rarest plants on the continent, according to the Smithsonian Garden in Washington D.C. It's a pink flower that grows on tall stalks and is native to just one small island in the middle of the Kankakee River, about an hour south of Chicago. But when botanist Rachel Goad paddled over to take a look back in 2014 with a group of native plant enthusiasts, instead they found an island overgrown with invasive honeysuckle. Was this special native plant gone for good? Perhaps, if not for the efforts of a small group of volunteers, initially led by conservationist Trevor Edmonson. “Hearing the phrase that the Kankakee mallow only grows on this island — anywhere in the world, like that is the extent of its remaining natural habitat — is such a draw for anybody, especially someone early on in their career,” Edmonson said. Today, reporter Claire Keenan-Kurgan from the Points North podcast at Interlochen Public Radio guides us on this floral rescue mission. Kansas is a big place, and not one particularly well-known for national park destinations. But that doesn't mean you should overlook the Sunflower State. In the closing days of September, as the country seemed destined for a government shutdown, the Traveler's Kurt Repanshek and Patrick Cone headed into Kansas to visit some of the parks there to better understand their role in the National Park System. And we were not disappointed. Back in 2022 Kurt made a similar trip, and stopped at Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in the Flint Hills of central Kansas. During that stop Ranger Eric Patterson gave Kurt a wonderful tour of the preserve and explained its history. Eric has moved on, but during Kurt and Patrick's recent visit Heather Brown, the preserve's chief of interpretation, sat down with them to discuss the preserve in general and the tallgrass prairie specifically. During their swing through Kansas, Kurt and Patrick also headed to Nicodemus, a well-off-the-beaten path destination in the National Park System, one so far off the beaten path that the state of Kansas does Nicodemus National Historic Site a tremendous disservice by providing very little signage showing you how to get to Nicodemus. But stay determined and you can find the site. While the Park Service only claims five buildings at Nicodemus, and only two are open, the history of how the townsite was founded in post-Civil War America by more than 300 previously enslaved peoples is an uplifting history of self-determination, grit, and perseverance. What follows are two conversations they had with rangers – before they were furloughed when the government shut down – at the two sites, LueCreasea Horne Horn at Nicodemus National Historic Site and Heather Brown at Tallgrass prairie.
Welcome to another Retrospective episode, this time about wildflowers. This was originally recorded in 2019 as part of the radio show, Digging in with Master Gardeners on 90.7 WGXC FM. The content is still very relevant today, so we've repurposed it for our podcast format. In this episode, Tim and Jean sit down with Tracey Testo-Smith, Agroforestry and Natural Resources Program Manager at Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Columbia and Greene Counties. Tracey considers the Agroforestry Resource Center in the Siuslaw Teaching and Model Forest as her “specialty.” She leads frequent forest walks, and Part I of this interview is a chat about the wildflowers she observes. She explains the Siuslaw Forest's evolution from a logging resource to one of four model forests in the New York City/Catskill Watershed area. The forest is an education source and is frequently open to the public. So, when you want to learn about wildflowers and attend one of Tracey's walks, what should you expect? Tracey says to keep in mind three main features of most : wildflowers are; petal number and symmetry (odd or even number); leaf arrangement, whether opposite, alternate or whorled; the edges of the leaf, whether the margins are entire, toothed or lobed. With these three basic observations, you can begin to “key out” an iID for the plant you're looking at. Newcombe's Wildflower Guide is Tracey's favorite reference book. On her walks, Tracey likes to point out the more subtle flowers, while still admiring the showier “stars”, of course. There is also a grey area about non-native introduced flowers that have coexisted peacefully with the natives for, in some cases, centuries. These are acknowledged for their beauty and usefulness, too. In the Spring wildflower walks, the Ephemerals show off. These are plants with a specific lifestyle habit of appearing early in the year, growing to full maturity and producing seeds before disappearing, plant and all, until the next year. Tracey points out that sometimes plants are misnamed as ephemeral but arent because the foliage perseveres into the summer. One example of this is the Hepatica. A field trip, whether into the Siuslaw Forest or, often, the Hudson CCE campus, consists of the group gathering and reviewing how to use field guides before venturing outside to explore. Phone apps are discussed as well. Tracey admits a partiality to the Springtime. She points out that at that time of year, we're hungry for color and fresh plant life as the forest reawakens. When Tim asked about the rarest plant she'd observed, she described the green fringed orchid, a very subtle beauty that seems to “move around” from year to year. It's listed by the state as not “rare”, but “vulnerable.”Some plants are hunted, specifically ginseng. Once almost eradicated because of its value to herbalists and over-harvesting by landowners and poachers alike, wild stands of the plant are often kept secret by those who find them. Ginseng planbts typcally don't thrive when transplanted, so Tracey warns against thinking you can bring them home to grow them in “safety”. In fact, she advises against digging up any wild plant... it's usually a death sentence because its growing requirements are very specific. Other threats beside loving them to death (moving them) include climate change and invasive plants. Climate change interferes with the interrelations between plants, birds and animals that had evolved over millennia, when outside temperatures are no longer predictable by seasons. With extremes occurring more often, it stresses plant life. Invasive plants outcompete native plants for resources by sprouting earlier and lasting later into the seasons. The other major threat to wildflowers is deer browse. Tracey describes experimental “exclosures” build within the forest and observed over a number of years for effect on the plant population. There is an opportunity for citizen scientist volunteers to participate in the AVID program (see website link in the resources). Another way to participate is via the iMap invasive app, reporting on discovery and reporting of invasive plants. What is it that makes a state park special? It's a question I've asked my self countless times since I began exploring Pennsylvania's public lands in 2021. For some it's deep, meaningful history to indigenous cultures, to early settlers or even to industry. For others its beautiful features like waterfalls, old growth forests and scenic vistas. And for many it's the landscapes that allow them to hike, bike, paddle, birdwatch, hunt, fish and more. For me, I've found that parks I deem special share a lot of these components. I want some history. I want something beautiful to look at. And I want a park that provides me with the opportunity to explore and discover. One of those places for me is Salt Springs State Park. Located less than 10 miles from the New York border, Salt Springs State Park is special. Now, I can't guarantee YOU will find it special, but I think it's pretty damn cool. Here's a quick list of some of thing things I think are special that we'll delve further into this episode. It's got an old growth forest, three waterfalls, meadows, historic buildings, pre-colonial and early-American history, fascinatin geology, hiking trails, camping and so much more. But best of all, it's in the middle of nowhere. So your hikes won't be disturbed by road noise and it's likely you wont find a crowded park. Wouldn't that be nice for a change. Salt Springs State Park is special and it should be near the top of your list if it's not already. Yes, it's a bit of a drive depending on where you live, but the best places are always worth the extra time it takes to get there. On this episode, I speak with Lee Dillon. Lee is the manager of the Lackawanna State Park Complex which includes Salt Springs State Park. I didn't want to start the new season in earnest while I was away as I knew I wouldn't have as much time to prep and barely any to record and edit, so I wanted to get a special episode and was trying to think of what to do to ease into the season. These two dates in 2002 completely destroy the conventional wisdom that you don't go to see a "legacy act" to hear music from their new record. Hearing this album played live in this way almost makes it the only way to think about this tour. Imagine if the Heartbreakers had put on similar performances for albums like Long After Dark, Wildflowers, and Hypnotic Eye. Even if you performed them as part of a mini-residency, hearing albums in their entirety in this way gives them a much more cohesive resonance that is lost if you cherry pick two or three singles. You can check out the entire performance here : https://youtu.be/yLl2_JIlKpsDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThe theme song is provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. When you have two guests on one show, you're going to get a variety of topics, especially when they have such diverse interests as tennis great Patrick McEnroe and Broadway icon Melissa Errico. The two, married 26 years, take us on a very friendly and relaxing jaunt through a very old-timey English castle (that somehow has a sauna and Pilates room), various off-the-beaten-path tourist spots in Italy, plus Frankfurt, Copenhagen, and Capri, home of those pants. And we get in plenty of discussion of tennis, which you can enjoy without keeping score (in that weird tennis way), running, or grunting. You can just lie down and let the anecdotes wash over you. Patrick tells us that his older brother, John McEnroe, has recorded a sleep story for a major sleep aid app, but that will cost you money and our show won't. Also, while Patrick will definitely send you to sleep, we have a hard time believing the same about John, having seen him get really super mad at line judges.Listen to Melissa Errico's album Lullabies & Wildflowers on the streaming service of your choice.Go to www.maximumfun.org/join and select Sleeping with Celebrities to support our show.Hey Sleepy Heads, is there anyone whose voice you'd like to drift off to, or do you have suggestions on things we could do to aid your slumber?Email us at: sleepwithcelebs@maximumfun.org.Follow the Show on:Instagram @sleepwcelebsBluesky @sleepwithcelebsTikTok @SleepWithCelebsJohn is on Bluesky @JohnMoeJohn's acclaimed, best-selling memoir, The Hilarious World of Depression, is now available in paperback.
