Life of the Record
The Making of LONG AFTER DARK by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - featuring Mike Campbell, Stan Lynch, Adria Petty and Ryan Ulyate

Life of the Record

In celebration of the new Deluxe Edtion of Long After Dark, the fifth studio album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Tom Petty connected with Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench to form Mudcrutch in Gainesville, Florida in 1970, they ended up relocating to Los Angeles. There they were able to sign a deal with Shelter Records, but Mudcrutch broke up soon after, leaving Petty under contract as a solo artist. Campbell and Tench began playing in a band with fellow Floridians, Ron Blair and Stan Lynch and they reconnected with Petty to form Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1976 with You're Gonna Get It following in 1978, and they built up a following in the UK especially. For their third album, they teamed up with producer Jimmy Iovine and spent many months recording what became Damn the Torpedoes. The album ended up being a breakthrough for the band, giving them mainstream success for the first time. They continued working with Iovine for their fourth album, Hard Promises. At this point, Ron Blair left the band so they brought in Howie Epstein on bass. They began working on their fifth album, which was produced by Iovine again. Long After Dark was eventually released in 1982. In this episode, drummer Stan Lynch describes where the band was at in this period when they had achieved their dream of success and were trying to figure out where to go next musically. Lead guitarist Mike Campbell explains his collaboration process with Petty for several songs where he would present a fleshed out demo for Petty to write lyrics to. Adria Petty describes being 8 years old when this record came out and shares her memories of this time when her father was writing from darker and more personal place than before. Producer and archivist Ryan Ulyate talks about the country leaning outtakes from these sessions and how Petty left high quality material off the record as he focused on structuring a cohesive album. With Long After Dark (Deluxe Edition), we get a chance to hear an alternative direction for the album that presages the more acoustic songs that Petty would embrace in his later career. From a dark and edgy sound to the record to Petty viewing songwriting as a job to experimenting musically with drum loops and synthesizers to engineer Shelly Yakus being an unsung hero to the band coming to the end of their work with Jimmy Iovine to welcoming the new format of MTV with the “You Got Lucky” video, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

I wanted to dig into that inherited narrative and reach for what I could.” The epistolary anthology is a collection of conversations that travel through time, exploring and celebrating womanhood in all its complexities. Silver City blends the folk twang of Helm’s childhood with gospel and soul, drawing inspiration from varied stories: the life of Helm’s great-grandmother, the story of a young fan struggling with substance abuse, Helm’s own life as a single mother and hard-touring singer. Recorded at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, New York, and produced by Josh Kaufman, the album finds Helm exploring themes of womanhood, single motherhood, and personal struggles, offering songs that are deeply personal and narrative-driven. With Silver City, Helm embraces the beauty of age, survival, and transformation through her powerful, story-rooted performances.

"Damn The Torpedoes" – volle Kraft voraus, damals wie heute. Doch der erfolgreichste Song des Albums wurde "Don't Do Me Like That". __________ Über diese Songs vom Album "Damn The Torpedoes" wird im Podcast gesprochen (21:19) – "Refugee"(31:02) – "Here Comes My Girl"(40:55) – "Even The Losers"(45:05) – "Don't Do Me Like That"(50:47) – "Louisiana Rain"__________ Über diese Songs wird außerdem im Podcast gesprochen (05:34) – "God's Gift To Man" von Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers(10:00) – "Depot Street" von Mudcrutch(11:34) – "American Girl" von Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers(50:08) – "Don't Do Me Like That" von Mudcrutch__________ Alle Shownotes und weiterführenden Links zur Folge "Damn The Torpedoes" findet ihr hier: https://www.swr.de/swr1/rp/meilensteine/tom-petty-and-the-heartbreakers-damn-the-torpedoes-100.html __________ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? I stand corrected about Jimmy Buffett's success, not to mention his impact on our culture. I mentioned on the radio show and podcast the numbers of recordings. Here are the facts: 32 studio albums, 11 compilation albums, 14 live LPs, one soundtrack LP and 67 singles! Jimmy was a very busy guy. He brought out the “party” in people. He also got melancholic. Like He Went to Paris. He wrote after meeting a musician, a one-armed veteran of the Spanish Civil War. It was a song he rarely played live and found out that Bob Dylan liked the song, and it was later recorded by Waylon Jennings and Doug Supernaw. Thank you, Jimmy and if you don't mind, save us a place in the next room. There's also a new journey we're on to hear where some successful artists were before they gained their star. Tom Petty's Mudcrutch, Ed King's Strawberry Alarm Clock and Skynyrd and so on. This time it's Gerry Rafferty, with 3 different groups. Good stuff. Fairly historical. Hope you like. Sure, there's a boatload of great LP cuts from the 60s and 70s. Your financial support of Tales Vinyl Tells is so appreciated from all who have already signed up and those who will in the future. DEV WULF The story of the native Houstonian begins with his hometown as the opening backdrop for a long journey in musical identity. From playing in bars on Saturdays and churches on Sundays, the Texicana frontman would gain a versatile understanding of multiple genres spanning from rock, hip-hop, blues, and country. Since his move to Dallas in 2008, the Americana singer would go on to open for national acts including Shane McDonald, Leagues, Grace Potter, Devon Gilfillian, Black Joe Lewis, Sir Earl Toon (Kool & the Gang), and Grady Spencer & the Work while performing with the band and as himself. While continuing his active work with Texicana, he is currently sitting in as a lead guitarist and vocalist for rapper, Moses Uvere. TEXICANA! “What would happen if we started a band together?” As Chris J Norwood and Dev Wulf recall, that's the resonating question at a round table in an old East Dallas bar; just audibly above an old cash-operated jukebox. Lakewood Landing would be the birthplace of a new idea between a trio of musicians and a few beers. The buzzing room of ideas would later evolve into an Americana outfit with joining members, Chris Pitts and Kelly Huffman, offering a unique rhythm section drawing from folk, rock, country, and jazz. Starting with little known icons, Big Star and Mudcrutch as influencing introductions, Texicana's early releases gave insight to their creative beginning with cover tunes, followed by their debut EP, No Good Reason. The Dallas Observer describes Texicana's nostalgic Americana and bluesy rock “as good for the soul,” during a time when COVID-19 closed down the country. Their latest offering, “Little Bit of Trouble,” continues to offer that good-for-the-soul feeling with songs that, as Central Track put it, “…feel like a trip down Elm Street with the windows down.” Texicana has gone on to win Best Folk & Americana Act and Best New Act of 2020 by the Dallas e-magazine Central Track, nominated Best Americana Act by the Dallas Observer, and winner of 91.7 KXT's Tiny Cake Contest. They've shared the stage with national acts Grace Potter, Devon Gilfillian, Black Joe Lewis, Southern Avenue, and Grady Spencer & The Work. Their EP, “Little Bit of Trouble,” is the latest to be released by Texicana and is available digitally wherever music is available. Today's episode is a very special one for me. I threw a hail mary and contacted Jon Scott a few weeks ago to see if he'd be willing to jump on a call with me to discuss Tom Petty and dig into his Memoir, Tom Petty and Me (My Rock n Roll Adventures With Tom Petty). To my delight, he agreed, and we recorded a long, wide-ranging conversation on the 18th of October. Rather wonderfully, this means that I'm able to release the episode on Tom's birthday by way of a small tribute. The conversation has been broken into two parts as I wanted to preserve as much of our discourse as possible as I thoroughly enjoyed it and hope that you will to! Please note that there is some profanity in this episode, which is all used in context of actual quotes from Jon's book.Make sure you check out Jon's website. If you're downloading this today, he has a two for one offer to purchase his fantastic book right now. I cannot recommend it highly enough and if you're a Pettyhead who hasn't read it, you're really missing out. In part one of their Tom Petty Heavy Hitters episode TJ2 of the Rock and Roll Heaven Podcast challenged their listeners to come up with a set list for one of Tom's pet projects, The traveling Wilburys. We thought about listing them on one of their social media sites. But as we reviewed The Traveling Wilburys Volume 1 and 3 and some of the non-Wilbury work the members of the super group produced, Sissi, Aaron and I decided to do a companion podcast with our own picks where we could talk about them. We navigated through some chaos and confusion about the nature of the task to come up with the following. Check the social media sites at the bottom for the complete lists... Rules - 4 songs by each of the members of the Traveling Wilbury's. These couldbe from any song the artist appeared on in any capacity. Wide open. In the case of George Harrison, Beatle songs were permitted (why wouldn't they be?). Petty's work with Mudcrutch? Absolutely! You get the idea. - 4 songs from the two albums the group released as a band. Pretty simple. - 4 encores. This one really went sideways. Both Aaron and Lisa claim I did not make the encore stipulations clear, so I will take the blame. In the end, we did a composite of 4 tunes we all mostly agreed upon. But if there was one aspect of this homework assignment we failed it was this one. 1979 - November: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers “Damn the Torpedoes”

What the Riff?!?

Damn the Torpedoes is the third studio album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and is the album where the group truly broke out into serious commercial success.  They had done well with their first album, with "Breakdown" breaking into the top 40, and "American Girl" receiving some air play.  But this album took the group to a different level.  Damn the Torpedoes was their first top 10 album, peaking at number 2 on the Billboard album charts for 7 weeks.  They were unfortunately kept out of the number 1 slot by the release of Pink Floyd's The Wall.Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are Mike Campbell on guitars and keyboards, Benmont Tench on keyboards and backing vocals, Ron Blair on bass, Stan Lynch on drums and backing vocals, and of course Tom Petty on lead, rhythm guitar, and harmonica.  Petty also produced the album.Damn the Torpedoes takes its name from Admiral Farragut's famous Civil War quote, but also reflects an attitude that the band was feeling.  At the time ABC Records was their distributor and assigned the contract to MCA.  Petty said that they couldn't assign the contract without permission.  MCA sued, and Petty declared bankruptcy as a strategic move to keep MCA at bay.  They finally settled by signing a new contract with Backstreet Records, which was an MCA subsidiary. The times were good for Petty's style of throwback rock and roll.  Disco was quite commercial and beginning to wane, and New Wave was just beginning its run.  MTV would also be a couple of years in the future.  The rock world was starved of solid rock and roll, and Petty was ready to step into the void with tight, radio-friendly singlesWe think this album is a winner, but as you know, even the losers get lucky sometimes! RefugeeThis is the second single from the album, released in January 1980.  It went to number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Petty and Mike Campbell wrote this, and it was one of the first songs Campbell wrote.  The song reflects the band's reaction to the pressures of the music business, and the struggle they had with MCA.What Are You Doin' In My Life?A deeper cut, this track is about a stalker girl that the guy can't make go away.  "Well, you're the last woman in the world that thrills me.  Now you got my girlfriend trying to kill me.  Honey, my friends think that I've gone crazy.  Can't you figure out that you ain't my baby?"Even The LosersBelieve it or not, this was not released as a single on the album outside of Australia.  There's a story behind this song.  Petty had a crush on a girl named Cindy in junior high school.  Years later in Gainesville, Florida, he hooked up with Cindy.  The next morning, Cindy told him their relationship consisted of only that night.  During that night, Petty realized that he needed to be in a rock and roll band, and this song sums up that night.Don't Do Me Like ThatThis is the first single from the album.  Petty wrote the song back in 1974 with a band called Mudcrutch.  This was Petty's first top 10 hit, reaching number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The singer relays the story of a friend who got his heart broken, and asks that his girlfriend not do the same.  I really like the sound of the organ on this piece. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Rose by Bette Midler (Main Theme from the motion picture The Rose)The song was a huge hit for Midler.  She played the main character, Mary Rose Foster, in this movie loosely based on the life of Janis Joplin. STAFF PICKS:You're Only Lonely by JD SoutherRob starts off the staff picks with a track  from Detroit born, Amarillo raised JD Souther.  His former roommate, Glenn Frey, sings backup on this song, along with Phil Everly and Jackson Browne.  JD Souther co-wrote a number of songs for the Eagles, which explains why this song may have a bit of an Eagles sound to it. Driver's Seat by Sniff N' The TearsWayne's brings us a one hit wonder.  It maintains a simple chord structure throughout, but builds in intensity as the song progresses.  Although we think of it as a driving song, the lyrics are really about disjointed feelings following a breakup, and not understanding how things would be over with someone you had been with so long.Good Girls Don't by The KnackBrian's staff pick was the follow-up to the massive hit "My Sharona."  Lead man Doug Fieger wrote this song in 1972, but couldn't get anyone to pick it up at the time.  He hated it by the time The Knack tried it, and they got it right in one take. Jane by Jefferson StarshipBruce brings us a hit from Jefferson Starship while Georgia native Mickey Thomas was front man.  It peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Bassist David Freiberg wrote the lyrics (along with Jim McPherson) inspired by an old girlfriend. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Is There Anybody Out There by Pink FloydWhen The Wall kept Damn the Torpedoes stuck at number two, Tom Petty told Westwood One, "I love Pink Floyd but I hated them that year."

¡Feliz Navidad! Mike Campbell, guitarist, co-writer and original Heartbreaker talks to Rick Rubin about growing up with Tom Petty, working on Wildflowers and about his new album, Wreckless Abandon, with band The Dirty Knobs. It’s the first band Mike’s ever been a part of without Petty - who he started playing with in the early 70’s in Mudcrutch. And it’s the first time Rick’s been able to catch up with Mike since Tom’s passing. They talk about their work together and how the Heartbreakers always managed to find new life ... plus Mike, for the first time, tells the story of how he wrote the riff for “Runnin' Down A Dream." From Memphis To Muscle Shoals & More. Una semana después, el día 19, llegará Bob's Back Pages: A Night Of Bob Dylan's Songs. J.D. Long Road Out Of Eden. Escuchar audio

Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

To celebrate the release of Tom Petty's Wildflowers & All The Rest box set, Rick Rubin connected with Heartbreakers keyboardist, Benmont Tench for a conversation. Benmont started playing with Tom back in Florida with a band called Mudcrutch. He stayed with Tom as they became the Heartbreakers, moved to LA, created some of the most memorable music of all time and was ultimately with him all the way until the last Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers performance at the Hollywood Bowl in 2017. Benmont is a massive talent who's also done plenty of work as a sideman for Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks, U2, Johnny Cash and a ton of others. Rick and Benmont talk about all of this and share memories of their time in the studio together. A Spanner in the Works. You Don’t Know How It Feels”. The Dirt And The Stars supone la primera colección de nuevas canciones desde que hace cuatro años publicó The Things That We Are Made Of. Escuchar audio

On his latest rock ‘n' roll adventure with Petty, Scott will be crisscrossing the country in October to join fans at celebrations in Gainesville, FL, where Petty grew up, and Los Angeles, where he landed 1974 in search of his first record deal with his band, Mudcrutch, and remained until his untimely passing as a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer rocked the music world two years ago, Oct. 2, 2017. We had the opportunity to interview The Shelters! The Shelters fan a fresh flame with classic fuel on their 2019 second full-length, Jupiter Sidecar [Warner Records]. Ebbing and flowing between rock ‘n’ roll roots, surf swagger, synth swells, and unassuming pop ambition, the Los Angeles based group—Chase Simpson [vocals, guitar], Josh Jove [guitar, vocals], and Sebastian Harris [drums]— thread it all together with catchy melodic hooks and handcrafted instrumentation.“In many ways, the record really shows we’re a California band,” affirms Chase. “There’s a bit of the beach. There’s a bit of the desert. There’s a bit of the seventies L.A. rock scene still around. We’re definitely old souls who have been exposed to great stuff—but we’re here in 2019.”“All of the sounds are old school gear played by live musicians,” adds Josh. “We’re a rock ‘n’ roll band open to combining a bunch of inspirations we love.”This approach quietly cemented them as a fan and critical favorite following the release of their self-titled full-length, The Shelters, in 2016. Produced by none other than the late Tom Petty, the debut garnered widespread praise from the likes of W Magazine, Rolling Stone, and Paste who noted, “The band’s sound successfully marries elements of ‘70s and ‘80s rock and roll with a modern flair.” Between the album release and dropping the Really Wanted You 7-inch a year later, the boys canvased the country alongside The Head and the Heart, Royal Blood, The Killers, Gary Clark Jr., Band Of Horses, BRONCHO, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch and more logging over hundreds of shows in two years. Meanwhile, the single “Rebel Heart” caught fire, racking up close to 14 million total streams. Not to mention, actress Juno Temple starred in the accompanying 2017 visual for “Gold.”While The Shelters have found a way to triumph again in the studio, they faced their biggest challenge in the wake of Petty’s tragic passing. For the first time, they found themselves in the studio without the producer who in many ways was the musical and spiritual compass for the band. Petty was even the initial catalyst for their union as a band, encouraging them to work hard at songwriting and offering them time in his home studio to hone their craft. Now with Petty gone, The Shelters returned to his home studio Shoreline Recorders in Malibu to mourn the loss of their friend and mentor; and in the process learned to rely on one another like never before.“When he was here, Tommy took the stance like Mr. Miyagi or Yoda,” continued Josh. “He knew we had it in us. We didn’t realize it until we got in there without him though.”“Starting was the hardest part,” admits Chase. “We’d been on the road for two years and hadn’t been writing songs. Tommy would take our heads out of the fish bowl and get us back on track. So, Josh and I leaned on each other.”“We definitely have something to prove,” Chase continues. “Obviously, we want to make Tommy proud. Even more so, we want to step out of his shadow and come into our own. We knew we had to do something exciting and different to carry on being The Shelters.”Chase and Josh spent over a year writing and recording at Shoreline. Each personally employed no less than twelve instruments, including tambura, analog synths, and more. As Chase honed his production acumen on Pro Tools, Josh explored his guitar under the influence of everything from Duane Eddy, Les Paul and Merle Travis, to Spirit, Television and The Stone Roses. With the framework in place, they holed up in Sunset Sound with producer Joe Chiccarelli [The White Stripes, The Strokes, Morrissey] in order to track Jupiter Sidecar. Rounding out the sound, Ken Andrews [Paramore, Nine Inch Nails] mixed the album and GRAMMY® Award-winning engineer Emily Lazar [Beck, The Killers] handled mastering at the Lodge.“We had worked hard in the studio prior to meeting Joe and actually kept about 75 percent of the original demos intact,” says Josh. “We had the spirit from what we did in Malibu and combined our experimental nature with Joe’s production. We needed a producer, and he really brought in some different ideas. We struck a push-and-pull sonically.”It becomes clear on the first single “You’re Different.” Sharp, yet fuzzy riffs entwine with a steady beat before culminating on a chantable hook and synth-sounding iridescent guitar solo.“‘You’re Different’ focuses on the power of individuality and also the struggle of change within oneself,” says Simpson. “It’s an internal conversation I have when I think about how I’ve changed over time, and through the experiences I’ve had in my life. It’s hard to know how you should feel about it – whether it’s something to embrace or fear.”Penned by Josh, “Waiting for Life To Begin” would be the last tune the guitarist shared with Petty. Heavy thoughts in the lyrics and sweeping strings underscore an urgent energy. On the other end of the lyrical spectrum, baritone surf guitar cruises through a synthesizer arpeggio, organ and tape echo on the immediately danceable “Tangled Up,” a song that celebrates “feeling so in love or over the moon you’re lifted out of this world.”Everything concludes on “Can’t Go Home.” Orchestral guitars and a driving rhythm build towards a final moment of clarity. “We wanted to push through hardship and not let anything stand in our way,” states Chase when considering the album closer. “We couldn’t go home, but we could start over. It was the final song I got to show Tommy before we went on tour. The chorus wasn’t right at the time, so I worked really hard to fix it and make it right. I proved I could do it lyrically.”In the end, Jupiter Sidecar marks the moment The Shelters become both who their mentor believed they could be and who they were meant to be all along…“These songs are really reflective of the place we were in,” Chase continues. “We pushed ourselves hard when writing and dug deep to capture the moment and the spirit of this band.”Now that their hard work in the studio is done for now, Chase reflects on The Shelters’ aims for the short and long term. “We’d love for a room of people to be singing these songs back to us. We’re just regular guys making music. If that happens, there would be nothing better in the world. We think Tommy would dig that.”Credits: Theme Song: Scott Russo & Design: Oscar RodriguezWe want to hear from you! Please email Tera@BringinitBackwards.comwww.BringinitBackwards.com

Before Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, classic American rock icons, they were just five kids from Gainesville, Florida who had driven cross country to Los Angeles with $200 and hopes of landing a record deal for their southern rock group Mudcrutch. Their ascent would be a slow one: the group signed with Shelter Records in 1974 and released a single, only to be dropped from the label. The band broke up. The band got back together and found themselves with a new opportunity to release an album — this time with a better name: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Released in 1976, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ self-titled debut is an amalgamation of styles and influences. It travels from classic blues to swampy country to classic ‘50s rock in songs that are abruptly short and full of anxious, pulsing rhythms that weren’t too deviant from the emerging punk scene. It’s no wonder people didn’t know what to do with them or how to classify them when the album was released. Though the album contains songs that are now staples of American pop culture, ingrained in our collective consciousness — songs like “American Girl” and “Breakdown” — it would be a few years before Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers cemented their status as household name rock stars — but it’s a status they’ve held onto. In this episode, we discuss the variety of musical influences on early Heartbreakers work, dive into Tom Petty’s sparse songwriting style, and talk about why Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ enduring, four decade long careers truly inspire us.

Benmont Tench, founding member of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, has played on nearly every Petty album over the years -- even the ones not credited to the Heartbreakers, such as Full Moon Fever and Wildflowers. His trademark keys are all over classic songs like "Refugee," "The Waiting," "Don't Do Me Like That" and so many more, which you can hear on the recently-reissued Greatest Hits 2LP set, now back on vinyl for the first time in over 20 years, with an alternate cover to boot! Tench is also a member of Mudcrutch with Petty and Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell (a group that pre-dates the Heartbreakers, who released and toured on their second album earlier this year) and has performed/recorded with a staggering list of music's elite, including Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, Emmylou Harris, Ryan Adams and Fiona Apple. Today, Benmont gives us one of the most passionate arguments for vinyl that we've been lucky enough to share on the podcast. There's plenty of Petty talk here, but Ben's strident defense of musicians getting their due, his concern about America's current "war on beauty," and his humility in having worked with some of the best songwriters in the business make this a must-hear episode. Ben's music can be found at benmonttench.com or tompetty.com. Follow Ben on Twitter @benchten and Instagram @benmonttench.
