Will Roe from The Times & Sunday Times - Who Killed CJ Davis? and Ben Williams from Rokkwood Audio return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Will’s choice The Dawn Wall. The Dawn Wall is a 2017 documentary about free climber Tommy Caldwell who, along with Kevin Jorgeson completed the first free climb of El Capitan in 2015. This was a 19 day climb and is considered one of the hardest climbs in history. The documentary is fairly standard in that we start with young Tommy in the Colorado Rockies learning to climb, then in a bizarre turn of events in 2000, Tommy and his then girlfriend Beth Rodden were captured in Kyrgyzstan by rebels. After returning from the traumatic kidnapping Tommy loses a finger in an accident and his marriage breaks down - it’s then he decides to take on El Capitan. Scores [supsystic-tables id=212] The Dawn Wall is a story of commitment and determination - plus a lesson in pooping on a cliff face. Not recommended for anyone with a fear of heights! Recommendability for The Dawn Wall is pretty high, lower scores for repeat viewing and small screen (the documentary curse strikes again!) give an overall score of 3.60. What do you guys think? Ben Williams from Rokkwood Audio and Will Roe from The Times & Sunday Times Stories of Our Time podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Ben’s choice The Peanut Butter Falcon. The Peanut Butter Falcon is a 2019 coming of age/odd-couple road movie starring Shia LaBeouf as Tyler (angry, on the run, misunderstood) and Zack Gottsagen as Zak an escapee from a care facility with Downs Syndrome, trying to follow his dreams) and Dakota Johnson as Eleanor as the care facility worker sent to being Zak home. Thrown into the paths of the unlikely friendship is John Hawkes Duncan who is chasing Tyler for money owned and revenge and Thomas Haden Church as Zak’s hero the wrestler The Salt Water Redneck. The Peanut Butter Falcon was the sleeper hit of 2019, it is impossible not to be caught with its Twainesque charm and laidback pace, helped by genuine chemistry between its two leads. The casting of Zack Gottsagen is a welcome move towards inclusivity in mainstream film and you’d be dead inside to not be moved by his optimism and humor. Scores [supsystic-tables id=193] Helped with having a runtime of 98 minutes, The Peanut Butter Falcon scores very highly on recommendability from everyone and pretty high on the small screen too to score 4.46 overall. Highly recommended! What do you guys think? Have you seen The Peanut Butter Falcon? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below! Will and Chris return for Episode 59 and we’re reviewing Will’s choice Nebraska. Not a documentary on the Bruce Springsteen classic album but the 2013 Alexander Payne comedy drama starring Bruce Dern. Part road trip, part snapshot of Middle America and part portrait of dementia, shot in black and white Nebraska is funny, poignant and a fantastic vignette of a dysfunctional extended family. Interestingly this was the first film Payne wasn’t directly involved in writing, yet it feels very much like he could have. It’s very hard not to love this film, the cinematography is beautiful, the whole cast is superb, it’s very, very funny, warm and moves along at a lovely gentle pace. We also discover the most watched films by Chris and Will are Mrs Doubtfire and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid respectively. Scores [supsystic-tables id='61']Overall Nebraska scores a very deserving 4.28 from Flixwatcher and guests and there was a lot of love for it from Twitter too. Highly recommended. Its Episode 52! Kobi and Helen are joined by Chris and Will to review Bernie (Chris’ choice), the 2011 black comedy from Richard Linklater starring Jack Black. The bizarre true story of mortician Bernie Tiede (Black) who amongst making the dead look glamorous also has a penchant for elderly widows and ends up becoming an unlikely companion for a very rich widow, Marjorie Nugent (Shirley MacLaine) and SPOILER ends up killing her. The film is a mix of straightforward filmmaking and mockumentary with talking heads from real life people from Carthage, Texas and sort of played straight and then sort of played for comedy by Black. The film was strongly received in American after its release but seems to have barely been seen or heard of by UK audiences - and there is good reason why. Its weird - given that it is a true story - about murder - the comedy feels weird and doesn’t achieve what it presumably intends to do and because the comedy is so weird it doesn’t work as dramatisation. One really for Jack Black completists only. Scores [supsystic-tables id='54'] Unsurprisingly Bernie doesn’t score highly in any category, scoring 2.9 by Flixwatcher but more love was given from Twitter. Seen it? Send us your review @flixwatcherpod What do you guys think? Have you seen Bernie? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!
