William Santana Li is the co-founder and CEO of Knightscope, a company focused on reducing crime in America with robots. He is a veteran entrepreneur and former executive at Ford Motor Company. He is also the founder of GreenLeaf, a company that grew to become the world's second-largest automotive recycler. Here are some key insights from this week's show: - Founders are laser focused on one objective and their message never changes. - Always pick something you are deeply behind and support it irrationally. - The key to making it is having single minded focus to get up and keep going after what you want, knowing there is no going back. - It is important to think of every problem cross functionally and see the company as a whole. - The world of startups works on three things: People, cash, and relationships. - The ability to say “No” starts from scope clarity. - Failure to say no can be a BTE (Business Terminating Event). - Use attitude, stamina and grit to brush off every setback. - A company's success relies upon its employee's willingness to achieve whatever needs to get done. - Raising capital from the right set of investors is important to blossom in the long run. - Deciding on board members solely based on who wrote the largest check, without having the long-term interest of the company in mind, is a poor way of setting up a governance structure. - The Founder's diet is comprised of getting punched in the face for breakfast, kicked in the stomach for lunch, body slammed for dinner, and then you got to wake up the next morning with the big smile on your face, get on the camera, and go back at it again. Some robots, such as surgical robots, do precision work in ways a human being can't. Others can do tedious, repetitive tasks fast and consistently, freeing people to do more productive work. And now we have patrol robots to keep us safe. They patrol a specified area and raise the alarm whenever they spot something suspicious. The biggest strength of such robots is that they can collect, store and analyze a lot of data as they patrol. A question that probably comes to mind when one hears of this is, does that make them better than security guards? In this episode, the second part of two, Ed Bernardon interviews William Santana Li, Chairman and CEO of Knightscope – an advanced security technology company that makes fully autonomous security robots built to deter, detect and report. Motorola also pioneered the automotive electronics industry, from the first mobile radios in police cars in the 1940s to automotive electric controls and semiconductors in the 1970s.   Clip from Seg. 4 - FULL SHOW: HERE       BRT S03 EP21 (120) 5-22-2022 – Fighting Crime & Providing Security using AI Robots by Knightscope w/ William Santana Li   Knightscope – More coverage, at a lower price. How much are you willing to invest to ensure the security of your community? Every year, crime has a $2 trillion negative economic impact on the U.S. economy. And if you added up all the cops, jails, the handcuffs, all the hospitals, and all the blood, sweat and tears – there seems to be this enormous hidden tax that society tries to ignore. Today's guest, William Santana Li, has an ambitious goal to cut that in half. William is the Chairman and CEO of Knightscope, an American security camera and robotics company with operations across the country. In this episode, Erik Cabral talks with William about how technology has the power to improve the security in the country. Through Knightscope's autonomous security robots (ASRs), different institutions and establishments can cover a lot more ground, working hand in hand with law enforcement officers to make this nation a safer and better place. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: The impact of crime on the economy The role of technology in the security industry Why 95% of startups fail Knightscope's available products The different tools and features of ASRs Opportunities for scaling Episode Highlights: The Role of Technology Our country is over 200 years old and the first role of the government is to protect its citizens. Yet somehow, we allow this kind of nightmare to happen every single day in almost every single community. The founders of our country would never have expected us to build a society where we're going to school, to work, or to a movie theater that literally came with the risk of being shot or killed. Knightscope is building a unique set of technologies – a combination of four impactful things over the next decade around self-driving autonomous technology – self-driving, robotics, artificial intelligence, and electric vehicles. If you can combine all four of those into something quite compelling, you can give law enforcement officers and security guards smart eyes and ears for them to do their jobs much more effectively. Focus on the Mission 95% of startups fail. Part of the reason is the CEO is not willing to stay focused because they're always looking for the next shiny object. This is the reason William only focuses on building products within the security industry. Because he knew that if he had to automate everything to target the total addressable market, then he would lose the ability to focus on execution. If 95% of startups fail, you need to take the market risk, the technical risk, and the execution risk away. So why would you be adding more? Knightscope is the only company in the world that gives you the level of difficulty to understand what it means to put a robot out in the field in the rain, at night, with people, cats, and dogs and everything. Plus, they need to get this thing to work, and so, not having that focus will only make things more difficult. Talking about AI and technology innovations to enhance the safety of a local environment is often a sensitive topic, but it is increasingly necessary to become more involved in it. On this episode of Before IT Happened, Donna talks with two AI entrepreneurs about how they're using AI-powered robots to make us safer. Stacy D. Stephens and William Santana Li join the show to cover some topics around the future of safety, such as situational awareness within law enforcement, misconceptions in our sense of privacy and the urge to address these issues now.  Before any world-changing innovation, there was a moment, an event, a realization that sparked the idea before it happened. This is a podcast about that moment — about that idea. Before IT Happened takes you on a journey with the innovators who imagined — and are still imagining — our future. Join host Donna Loughlin as her guests tell their stories of how they brought their visions to life.   JUMP STRAIGHT INTO: (01:30) - Introducing Bill and Stacy from Knightscope, a company that develops autonomous security robots to combat crime - “Chrysler had donated an engine, but none of it was working. So my assignment for the semester is like: Hey, there's all these parts here. There's a dynamometer. Get the engine on the dyno and set it all up.” (07:59) - Careful what email you reply to: How Bill and Stacy decided to build a security company together - “As a police officer, I'd always thought these cars that we ride around in, they're not designed or engineered to be police cars.” (13:07) - Situational awareness within law enforcement and how the Knightscope robots can help to make the US one of the safest countries in the world - “This is not a popular thing to say, but we just don't have enough officers and guards to do the job appropriately.” (19:08) - Behind Knightscope's software: How can machine learning technology be applied to law enforcement? - “It's not like you have to constantly monitor what's going on, the robots and the software are doing a lot of that heavy lifting for you.” (26:39) - Adapt and evolve: The complex process of launching Knightscope technology to the world - “There will be more incidents. You're not going to go build this and not have things go wrong. The important thing is how do you handle it when things do go awry.” (32:40) - The need for security technology education, traditional investment issues and the notion of losing privacy - “By bringing all of the people in who this is going to affect, they actually have ownership of the technology before it ever even arrived.” EPISODE RESOURCES:  Connect with Knightscope CEO William Santana Li on https://twitter.com/WSantanaLi?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor (Twitter) and https://www.linkedin.com/in/williamsantanali/ (LinkedIn) Connect with Knightscope Executive VP Stacy D. What are your options if you have a real business but there is a lack of engagement from venture capital?  In 2015, Congress implemented Title IV of the Jobs Act, which was intended to provide a process for startup companies to sell stock to the general public while remaining a private company.    Why haven’t you hear about this process, knows as a Reg A+?  The provisions of Reg A+ allow a company to raise up to 50 million, but there are compliance regulations, audits, SEC-mandated disclosures.  But the opportunity to sell stock to the public and create an investor base for funding future growth expands the opportunities for the startup community to develop new sources for funding. My guest on this topic is William Santana Li, the Founder, and CEO of Knightscope, a company that provides autonomous robots for security services.  When Bill was not able to secure venture capital funding, he decided to use the Reg A+ process for a mini-IPO.  In this podcast, Bill will lay out the process, the motivations, the surprises and the due diligence he encountered.
