Episode 85 kicks off with the crew discussing Denzel Washington's new starring role in a Spike Lee joint titled Highest 2 Lowest, alongside A$AP Rocky and Ice Spice. This leads to a conversation about Denzel's greatness and legacy in acting. Resident thespian EverythingOShauN takes a deep dive into why Denzel considers himself a theatre actor first, before a Hollywood one. Next, the group unpacks Ryan Coogler's magnum opus film Sinners (spoilers ahead), and a heated debate quickly sparks between Trivelle and OShauN over Michael B. Jordan's performance playing twins “Smoke & Stack.” This disagreement opens up a broader critique of Jordan's entire filmography. As that conversation gains traction, XP jumps in to challenge the double standard in how Black actors are held to higher standards of excellence compared to their Caucasian peers, while dropping a controversial name to attempt to illustrate the point. After some well-deserved praise for Sinners, the crew breaks down Delroy Lindo's iconic performance, the film's hidden messages and spiritual layers, its commentary on the music industry, and Coogler's creative decisions around format and how they contributed to the film's success. During recording, NBA playoff games are unfolding live, interrupting the flow and shifting the conversation to real-time reactions. The Knicks edge out a win to go up 2–0, and Trivelle walks back his previous predictions about the Houston Rockets, offering new takes on their next steps. The focus then shifts to LeBron James, as Trivelle reveals a listener asked for him to be pressed about the viral LeBron clips from OShauN. A heated debate follows comparing peak LeBron vs. peak Jordan, with the cast reliving the highs and lows of LeBron's dominance in the league. They also touch on Jokic's continued excellence and Luka Doncic's need for growth. From there, the episode transitions to music headlines. The crew discusses Bobby Shmurda's alleged struggles with ticket sales, Busta Rhymes receiving his first Diamond plaque, and the major Afrobeats artists set to hit Scotiabank Arena in Toronto — Rema, Wizkid, and Davido. That is, until XP finds out in real time that Wizkid's show has been canceled, sparking a conversation about the significance of selling out arenas in markets like Toronto compared to London or New York. As the one-year anniversary of the biggest rap conflict of all time approaches, the gang reacts to the debate between DJ Hed (for Kendrick) and Mal (for Drake) on the Rory & Mal podcast. They dissect the arguments and the direction the battle took. Finally, after Rockstar Games once again delayed the generational release of GTA 6, they surprised fans with a brand-new trailer. XP breaks it down and reflects on the cultural impact a game of that scale holds. Trivelle closes out the episode with updates on football (including the Champions League Final), boxing, and more.

In West Africa, women are on the cutting edge of musical and cultural progress. This program looks at four singer/composers with roots in tradition and unique ideas about how to keep them current in the fast-changing milieu of today's African music. Mali's Fatoumata Diawara keeps her focus on messages, mixing traditional sounds and rock idioms to reach young audiences. Senegal's Aida Samb is finding new avenues for that country's trademark mbalax sound, including collaborations with Afrobeats stars like Wizkid. Elida Almeida of Cape Verde has emerged as a freewheeling composer, able to draw on whatever influences she likes, and it's working for fans of all generations. And Benin's Angelique Kidjo, never one to sit back on her many successes, has covered Talking Heads' 1980 album Remain in Light, in its entirety, re-Africanizing a rock classic for a new time. We'll speak with all four artists, and hear their latest music. Produced by Banning Eyre APWW #785

Reportage Afrique

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 4, 2025 2:58

After the release of the monster hit ‘Caro' with Wizkid, L.A.X (Damilola Afolabi) became a huge star. And he was only 18.He tells me the story of how he got that big break, how Wizkid changed his life… and why everything slowed down because his parents insisted he finish school and does his NYSC. Whatever that may have done to his momentum, he says he has no regrets. Returning to Nigeria, growing up with his grandmother taught him wisdom. We talk about: ● Why he left Wizkid, and why his leaving made Wizkid worried ● Why he continues to call Wizkid his Big Brother and why he thinks Wizkid has been on the attack in the past one year ● Why people think his energy and his career have slowed down, even though he is cleaning out concerts across Europe ● The heartbreaking story of how he found out his ex-girlfriend was cheating on him - and why he still begged her to stay ● How he paid her back for the cruelty he suffered - and what he learnt from that entire experience ● Why he sued the anonymous lady who accused him of sexual abuse and then recanted ● Why he takes life easy, no matter what other people are doing in the industry or on social media L.A.X. says he is a huge fan of the show and that's a big compliment, because he is without any doubt from one of the coolest guests I have ever interviewed on this show. Watch the full 1-hour episode now on withChude.com.And let me know what you think in the comments section below. ❤   Exclusive Patron-only Content Hosted on Acast. When Shopsydoo's (Adesope Olajide) father came to visit him in the UK he couldn't believe the life his son was living. He asked him - “You left a life as a prince to come and live like a pauper here?”But he stuck with his dreams for himself and his family. Now, no major Afrobeats concert in Europe and the United Kingdom is complete without Adesope. He is of the country's biggest hype men and MCs.  We talk about how that industry and that sound has changed over the years - from 2face and Psquare to Rema and Fireboy - changed the world and changed his life. “Black women didn't want to date us because we had Nigerian accents,” he tells me. “But now, because of Afrobeats it is now mainstream to be African, to come from Africa, to be part of the culture.”He says he will forgive Tiwa Savage and Wizkid because these pioneers made it possible for this change to happen. And he tells me the greatest lessons he has learnt from the great successes and great failures of Nigeria's music industry. Consider this a masterclass.
