Our conversation today for Tourism Tuesday - Shenandoah County edition - with Kary Haun also includes Katie Mercer, Director of Marketing & Events for the town of Woodstock, and Zach Hottel, archivist at Shenandoah County Library. We learn details about the Civil War Trails® marker that was recently installed in Woodstock. The marker tells the story of the “Valley Turnpike,” which was influential in the movements of both sides during the Civil War. The sign is located at 135 N. Main Street, adjacent to the parking lot for the municipal office. Zach explains the research that goes into each of these markers and how locations are chosen for them. Civil War Trails® has been working with communities since 1994 to share their stories and connect visitors with small towns and big stories across a network that now spans six states. Travelers look to Trails to put them in the footsteps of the generals, soldiers, citizens, and the enslaved who found themselves in the midst of this Civil War. Learn more on their website: https://www.civilwartrails.org/ Katie gives details for a few upcoming events that will happen in the next few months: Woofstock & Shenandoah Valley ArtFest. She discusses the need for vendors at each event and shares plans to host a talent competition at ArtFest. Stay updated on Woodstock events by visiting their website: https://woodstockva.gov/ and follow them on Facebook. Zach gives details for Shenandoah County Heritage Day happening on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at the New Market Fire Hall on South Congress St. in New Market. Kary reminds listeners that the next Shenandoah County Tours will take place on Wednesday March 20th and will feature an art activity & tour of Woodstock. Can Dogs Hunt Ghosts?BOOK DESCRIPTION:"This might be one of the month's, if not the year's, sweetest books — zaniest, too.” ―The Washington Post"A hilarious addition to the dogoir canon.” ―People"Perhaps the greatest love story ever told.” ―Refinery29 "The feel-good book the world needs." —PopSugar From one of the Internet's most original voices, a hilarious journey through the odd corners of obsessive dog ownership and the author's own infatuation with her perfect dog Peter. The author met Peter in the spring of 2017. He -- calm, puppy-eyed, with the heart of a poet and the soul of, also, a poet -- came to her first as a foster. He was unable to stay with his previously assigned foster for reasons that are none of your business, but which we will tell you were related to frequent urination. The rescue needed someone free of the sort of responsibilities that would force her to regularly leave the house for either work or socializing, and a writer was the natural choice. Thus began a love story for the ages. The Particulars of Peter is a funny exploration of the joy found in loving a dog so much it makes you feel like you're going to combust, and the author's potentially codependent relationship with her own sweet dog, Peter. Readers will follow Peter and his owner to Woofstock, "the largest outdoor festival for dogs in North America," and accompany them to lessons in Canine Freestyle, a sport where dogs perform a routine set to music, creating the illusion that they're dancing with their owners. From learning about Peter's DNA, to seeing if dogs can sense the presence of ghosts, The Particulars of Peter will give readers a smart, entertaining respite from the harsh world of humans into the funny little world of dogs.Readers will accompany this lovable duo through exciting trips, lessons, quiet moments of connection, and probably a failure or two. By fusing memoir and infotainment, The Particulars of Peter promises to refresh the perennially popular dog lit category in a scrumptiously bighearted barnstormer of a book.

Bill Shelton on Positive Messaging in Purebred Dogs This three part series was recorded at Woofstock, where Bill Shelton judged a Best in Show. Bill Shelton imparts his wisdom in part one of a three-part series from a wide-ranging conversation about positive messaging in purebred dogs. People respond to positive messages, Shelton said, which will allow us to change perceptions within the general public. Words like preservation and purpose bred dogs change the paradigm of purebred that can have negative connotation. “Look what shelters have done,” Shelton said. “They used to be known as the dog pound and mongrels. Look at it today, shelter, rescue, adoption. What fabulous words they use. We still use all these draconian words like kennel, breeders and purebred. They are accurate, but we need to move past them. Even the boarding industry has recognized the anthropomorphized words and have day care and stylists instead of kennel runs and groomers.” We as breeders and exhibitors have the responsibility to take back the conversation and can’t rely exclusively on the American Kennel Club to do the work for us, Shelton noted. “I don’t use the word responsible any more because 30 people have a different understanding of what that means,” Shelton said. “Purpose bred means that not only are the dogs bred for intellect and the way they look and predictability, they are bred intentionally by people who care about them.” The term preservation breeder opens up the opportunity for conversation in the community, Shelton said. “The paradigm has to change,” Shelton said. “We’ve focused so much on dog shows, that we began to believe that is the most important thing. What’s really important is that you and I as dog breeders supply the demand of happy, healthy family companions.” Accountability “As breeders we are taking accountability,” Shelton said. “We are the ones taking responsibility from cradle to grave. Rescue started in the halls of the AKC and parent clubs. This is one of the reasons we find only five percent identifiable purebreds in shelters.” We have to assimilate different perspectives rather than pushing against them, Shelton said. We need not to demean people but rather encourage them to understand what preservation breeders are doing, including producing a quantitative predictability of health. Final Thoughts from the Legends: Juniors, New Judges The final installation from the Pure Dog Talk Friday Night Forum at Del Monte Kennel Club in 2017 with Pat Trotter, Dorothy Macdonald and Kim Meredith. Judge following and “fly-ins” Dorothy – won’t put dog down if they followed. If I liked him best, will go up every time. Don’t put up just because he’s there. Don’t keep track of it. Dog didn’t write the ticket. Kim – if an exhibitor brings consistently the best dog, will put up. Pat — Judge on the day. Only thing you’re thinking about. Who remembers where you were last week. Juniors judging Kim – very favorite thing to judge. Look for juniors to be like what I see in the ring. Not a lot of grandstanding. Smooth, confident. Don’t like it when they fake smile at me. Hands of gold. Dorothy – I’m here for dogs. Decided not to judge them. I want the dogs. It’s the only thing I’m there for. Pat – What I look for. Young person with a dance partner, in sync with each other. Right athletic ability for dog they’re showing. Judge on how they move a dog. If the breed calls for a loose lead, I want it to be shown appropriately for the breed. Want the child to be tuned in to dog. Move front from elbow, hind quarters from hock. Want in condition. No Dandruff, dirty teeth, ungroomed, fat. Show your dog, only look at judge enough to know what’s going on. Look at your dog. Dress appropriately. Age appropriate. Want to improve handling – go watch juniors. Talking to dogs in the ring Kim — Whatever it takes your dog to do its best Dorothy – so long as it doesn’t disturb the other dog Pat – like to see people talk to their dogs. Dogs hear well. Don’t have to talk loud. Believe in communicating with dogs. It’s a relationship. Provisional judging & soliciting assignments Kim – old school. Never solicit. For our cluster, I rarely get solicitation. Depends on how you approach. Face to face makes a difference. In this day and age, judges need permit assignments. If judges are willing to fly in and judge for 3-4 $/dog. What’s your reputation? Are you respected in your breed? Can you run on time? Dorothy – in talking to other judges, never asked anyone myself, others asked for me. Help each other. Pat – Bottom line, it’s not just what you do after you get the badge, what you did before that. There are people promoting themselves to do judging far beyond their experience. Entitled to use acquaintances and friends. Need to get past fear of rejection. People who aren’t prepared to judge breeds they’re judging are also allowed to solicit. Sad state for the sport. Legends part 2: What NOT to do, Too Many Dog Shows and More Today’s episode is a continuation of the conversation at the Pure Dog Talk Friday Night Forum at Del Monte Kennel Club in July 2017. Our panel includes Pat Trotter, Dorothy Macdonald and Kimberly Meredith. The conversation continues with questions from social media via live stream and the live audience. Topics covered include: Thoughts on realignment/expansion of groups – realignment to FCI Kim – hope it never passes – 10 groups in a big cluster would be very difficult – time and costs would be prohibitive Dorothy – no need to follow fci Uncropped dogs in cropped breeds Kim – doesn’t affect me – don’t pull ears up on uncropped Great Danes. Dorothy – don’t mind which way they go, just judge them as they are, would prefer no cropping, but have never faulted in judging Pat – defer to breeder judge – Vince Mulligan Decline in entry numbers, too many shows in one weekend… ideas to rein in # of shows &/or bring in more participants Kim – horse is out of the barn. 200 miles is nothing. AKC approved Too many shows, too close together. It’s a dilemma. Now what do you do? Damage has been done. Show in Chile… FCI subsidizes. AKC approved all the shows… should they supplement these clubs? Dorothy – the barn door got left open, has evolved… akc will have to rescind licensing. Only solution. They made the mistake, they should bear the solution. Pat – I think the most innovative person I’ve seen is Kim… what she’s done w/ Woofstock …. Requires more than 2 shows to get the entry up. Is the dog that wins BIS the best dog in the show Kim – whoever’s judging BIS thinks it is Dorothy – put up the one they thought was best, others might not agree, there are as many opinions as people watching. There are no redos…. Pat – more than one bis when the dog I thought would beat me, didn’t get there. Faux pas for exhibitors/what not to do Kim – very little that irritates me. Except being late. Be there, be prepared, certain breeds are notorious… even if I don’t enjoy them, I enjoy their dogs Dorothy – excessive roughness from the handler. Pay attention. Keep dog in the shade Pat – abuse of bait vs use of bait … trying to look at dog’s mouth, shoving bait in its mouth…. Throwing bait… start handling dogs when it stops handling itself… grandstanding… I want to see the dog, not the handler… tendency for handlers to overstretch the dogs… let the judge & steward know if you have multiple dogs & have to change. Pam Bruce: Memories and the Essence of Style in Purebred Dogs Pam Bruce and Michael Canalizo get groovy at Woofstock. Pam Bruce, fourth generation Canadian dog fancier, joins host Laura Reeves in part one of a wide-ranging very personal interview on history, people, judging, breeding and the essence of “style” in purebred dogs. The quintessential dog person, Bruce shares stories and humor and insight reminiscing about the legends of the sport – Michelle Billings, Jane Forsyth, Anne Rogers Clark, Michael Canalizo, Ginny Lyne, Dick Meen and many more. Bruce finished her first dog, a Maltese, at four years old. Her family owned Maltese and later Lhasas. Perhaps best known for her association with Canalizo and thehttps://puredogtalk.com/canalizo-ghosts-of-the-past-and-breeding-for-the-future-pure-dog-talk/ ( Grandeur Afghans), Bruce breeds Airedales today. Bruce and Canalizo in competition with Ch. Tryst of Grandeur and Ch. Yours Truly of Grandeur. Allowed to Brush In a lifetime of “doing hair,” both brushing and hand stripping, she finds that the two coat types develop balance. “You brush away and pull towards, so the actions balance each other out.” Steeped in the tradition of learning from the ground up, Bruce talks about the tasks that she was “allowed” to do as a young girl. Generational standing gave her no “out” on the grunt work. Being trusted with tasks like cleaning pens and brushing dogs was an “earned” privilege. Being the first person at the dog show was a badge of honor, Bruce noted. Describing her work day as an assistant with one particular handler, she would have all toy dogs bathed before 8 am, dry them in order of their ring time and then work through the bath and blowout of the poodles, Afghan and Lhasa. Pam Bruce showing Ch. Yours Truly of Grandeur to Best in Show. Bruce describes the origin of her understanding of focus, being meticulous, and taking care of the dogs first. “One thing I learned,” Bruce said. “I don’t remember a bad word being said about anyone or their dogs. Everybody has a talent and something to bring to the table. You should never ever speak of anyone poorly because together we make up what is this passion for all of us, which is this sport.” Teamwork to keep breeding dogs As one of the few remaining active connections to the days of big kennels, Bruce continues to emphasize dog shows as an evaluation of breeding stock. “Those big working kennels had numbers,” Bruce said, “but that afforded us the ability to learn the quality (of the dogs).” Pam Bruce with her homebred Airedale. Lacking those facilities in today’s society, Bruce said teamwork picks up the slack. Sharing in a network of other Airedale breeders, “I can go back to the people working with me and get what I need.” “Breeding is about the artform, the intrinsic qualities of the breeds,” Bruce said. “The best indicator of what you’re going to get is what you’ve had. Quality begets quality. You need to have foresight. I’m always breeding three generations ahead.” Support this podcast
