Despite its long and rich history, the ukulele has often been snubbed or dismissed as a novelty instrument by the music world. But over the years, rock stars have embraced the guitar's smaller cousin, from Elvis Presley to the Beatles to Taylor Swift. Kim Chakanetsa meets two women who turned their love for the ukulele into a successful musical career. When Taimane was gifted a ukulele at 5 years old, it was the start of a musical journey that would take her from busking on the streets to appearing on the world's biggest stages. She is now considered one of the world's leading ukulele players and is based in Honolulu, Hawaii. Zee Avi is a singer-songwriter, ukulele player and guitarist from Malaysia. Zee taught herself to play music when she was a teenager and she got her first record deal at 22, thanks to a video that she posted on the internet back in 2007. Her songs have appeared in numerous TV shows and films. Produced by Alice Gioia and mixed by Donald MacDonald. In this episode we talk about the Smiths compilation album Hatful Of Hollow. We talk about the Smiths in general and a whole bunch of other stuff. Does anyone actually read these show notes? I feel like I'm writing to myself. I use to write long emails to my boss. I suspected he wasn't actually reading the whole thing, so I started to insert lyrics for songs in the middle of paragraphs to see if he would say something. He never did. So I knew he wasn't reading all of my emails. Anyways, if you've made it this far check out Zee Avi's self titled album. We talk about it on this episode. Got a great Morrsey cover on it. https://www.discogs.com/Zee-Avi-Zee-Avi/master/882351 We also discover that Chris Smith is a supporter of the show! Thanks Chris that's so cool! There are aspects of life that we typically see as something we should encourage people to do, like fostering and/or adopting children. We all want to see these children find love and belonging in a home. What happens when one of Jehovah’s Witnesses happens to be the foster parent? This is one person’s story of being introduced to the cult through a foster parent. Taira begins her journey into it at the ages of nine through eleven and it created a bond between herself and her foster parent, but also Jehovah, and that would stick with her for years as she searched for a permanent family. This is a really interesting personal story that gives insights into a situation that is very seldom talked about, and I think that there are lessons to be taken away from it. There are obvious issues such as the impact on a child that is seeking unconditional love and belonging only to find themselves in an extremely conditional relationship with Jehovah’s Witnesses. The song that Taira chose to represent her journey is Honey Bee by Zee Avi. Speaking of music, you can listen to the Shunned Podcast Spotify playlist here for all of the songs chosen by guests of the show. Zee Avi (@zee.avi). Never thought she'd give us the time of day but she graciously said "Yes. I'm down" and here it is, episode 23. Zee put out a new single recently called "Who Are You?" which you should check out on her social media platforms but she didn't come on the pod to talk about music. She walks us through her transition from fashion school to music to signing with Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records and hanging out with Jack White. No biggie. Just Jack White from The White Stripes. Zee also tells us about her undying love for Dyson vacuum cleaners. It's the Zee Avi episode yall! Take some damn notes.

The success of Malaysian-born singer-songwriter Zee Avi is an increasingly familiar but noteworthy story: Avi was discovered after she posted a few songs on YouTube. Within two months, she was signed to release her self-titled debut. Here in this intimate Tiny Desk Concert, Avi sings three hushed lullabies, including what has become one of her signature songs: a cover of Morrissey's "First of the Gang."
