Far on the outskirts of the big, bad city where Eraserhead probably took place, in the black and white foggy haze of White Plains, Robert, a painter, struggles with the sudden demise and grisly resurrection of his best friend, a Rabbit named Shadow. Now, all Robert wants to do is take the-girl-next-door Sydney to the Jovial Halloween Ball and have a good time. But it's hard to have fun when your best friend aspires to be a rock n roll singer and won't stop eating the people you know. The story is named after the song "My Shadow" by Jay Reatard off his debut solo album, "Bloodvisions." Interview with NOBRO

We had the pleasure of interviewing NOBRO over Zoom video! Montreal's fierce rock quartet NOBRO released a new single "Better Each Day" via Dine Alone Records, mixed by two-time Grammy Award-winning engineer Dave Schiffman (Vampire Weekend, Adele). The anthemic track kicks off with the powerful set of vocals — "I spend my whole life running away…" — before culminating into the pounding drums, shredding riffs, and blistering vocals that NOBRO have become known for. A video directed and produced by Jeremy Shantz, Jenn Wade, and Daniel Esteban, and shot in the band's hometown of Montreal, will be released on October 13."I was experiencing some kind of crisis at the time of writing 'Better Each Day,' and if I remember correctly, it was a 'writing music' one," reflects vocalist and bassist Kathryn McCaughey. "There are times when songs come streaming out of you as though they wrote themselves into existence, and other times it can be as challenging as getting two purebred Persian cats to mate. I was sitting in our producer's studio when he suggested I might like a little jingle he wrote for a commercial that never got used. I thought it was dope and voila, this song was born. One day, you're punk as fuck, and the next, you're playing old unused car commercial jingles." New tour dates have been announced for NOBRO, who join Tokyo Police Club in the U.S. this November, then Billy Talent in 2022 for 10 dates across Canada.Featuring McCaughey's confident, cocky yell and blistering bass lines, Sarah Dion's signature backbone drums (McCaughey claims drummer Sarah Dion will "go down in history as one of the best drummers in the entire world"), killer riffs from guitarist Karolane Carbonneau, and sweeping keyboard licks and bongo solos from master of percussion Lisandre Bourdages, NOBRO have become a rock 'n' roll force to be reckoned with."I wanted to play this type of music but there wasn't a lot of women who wanted to play it. I wanted to be in the most kick-ass all-female band ever," says McCaughey. Resilient and tough, NOBRO are aware that they will face skepticism as part of the omnipresent sexism in the scene they inhabit, but that only spurs them on. "We said we would do it one way, and so we made sure that we were always doing it that way," she continues.McCaughey founded the band almost as a challenge to herself when the aftermath of a relationship with a prominent Montreal musician made her determined to be "more than just a footnote on this person's Wikipedia page." She realized she possessed all the tools to express herself in her own voice and to shape her own destiny. All that was needed were fellow musicians who felt the same. As fate has it, they were all nearby shaping their own destiny, mastering their instruments, ready to shred as hard as they could, and were ignited when they found each other. With co-writes with members of METZ and Fast Friends under their belts, as well as an EP titled Sick Hustle released in 2020 on Dine Alone Records, NOBRO are well on their way to achieving their goal. Their music video for "Don't Die," animated by Greg Doble, amassed a number of accolades including: Best Short Animation at Monster Flix Awards, Best Music Video at Hollywood Horror Fest, Best Music Video at Another Hole In The Head, Best Horror Music Video at Horror Bowl Movie Awards, Silver Award at Los Angeles Animation Film Festival, and Honorable Mention at Santiago Horror. Inspired by the likes of Jay Reatard, The Damned, and Royal Trux to name a few, NOBRO are unafraid to wear their influences on their sleeve. They cut their teeth on the road with bands like FIDLAR, PUP, and Charly Bliss, and more recently played their biggest venues to date on an arena tour with Alexisonfire and The Distillers. Call them punk rock if you like, but its long-held perceptions are just some of the things NOBRO are here to challenge — in the loudest and most exciting way possible. We want to hear from you! It's back to school time for the saucy boys as we spotlight a new school year, pandemic edition. Coronavirus politics seem to infect everything, including the school reopenings in Georgia, where craven meets crazy as admin and parents conspire to keep the masks off and the kids in the crowded classrooms. With infection rates up, it's all part of the real time biology lab experiment known as Covid-19 American style. When the kids go to school and get infected, well the governing powers of the Georgia school districts say it's all just hands-on learning. Speaking of power, as one of our HAG patron philosophers Michel Foucault reminds us, the writing of history itself is an act of power, and whether it is a power used to liberate or condemn depends on who is telling the story and for what purpose. Our special guest this week, China scholar and Carnegie Mellon University professor Benno Weiner, discusses communist China's own machinations with history over the course of its decades long nation-building projects. What does it mean to be Chinese, and will the ethnic minorities who live in the borderlands of China's vast geographical periphery, ever see themselves as genuine members of a Chinese nation? Do the governing authorities have a legitimate historical claim that they should? Or is it simply a matter to be decided by power? From Dallas, Georgia to Xinjiang, China - the HAG team keeps you socially distanced and globally connected. This week's music: Jay Reatard, "I'm Watching You"; Run the Jewels, "Talk to Me"; Protomartyr, "Modern Business Hymns"

THE TOUGH SHITS "Late Bloomer" Burning In Paradise Burger Records (2019) https://burgerrecords.11spot.com/the-tough-shits-burning-in-paradise.html The Tough Shits are a rock and roll band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Their unique sound is a sonic missive to their garage forefathers, without being strictly, just another scuzzy rock band. Their musical influences are informed of: The Rolling Stones, KISS, Sam Cooke & The Clash. Their stylistic influences come directly from bands similar to the New York Dolls. They have shared past bills with touring bands like Jay Reatard, Redd Kross, Mikal Cronin, Meatbodies and every good band that’s passed through Philly.Philadelphia's perennial champions of cult rock anonymity, The Tough Shits remain, through line up changes, life mismanagement, and general personal turmoil, a band of brothers. Forever walking the line between celebration and self-loathing, the juvenile and the genuine, they combat their cynicism with open hearted enthusiasm for writing and performing their offbeat songs. Operating under the belief that the odds are stacked ever too high against any hope of success, they long ago learned the onlytrue path is to follow their own erratic muse, and above all, to make each other laugh in the face of failure. Their new album Burning In Paradise peels back the surface and reveals new dimensions of feeling and 'sad magic.'The Tough Shits’ first new album in 8 years “Burning In Paradise” is out worldwide on Burger Records on March 22, 2019! “The Tough Shits are so half-assed about being a ‘successful’ band that it's almost heroic. Though they rarely play outside Philadelphia and they have the self-promotional instincts of a pile of bricks, they've amassed a small but fervent cult of admirers drawn in by their genius-level pop hooks and infectious attitude of not giving a single fuck in the whole world.” -Chicago Reader

On this episode of Memphis Musicology, we explore the brief yet amazing life of James Lee Lindsey Jr., better known by the stage name Jay Reatard. Before his untimely death in 2010, Jay was a blazing force in the worlds of punk and garage rock who left behind a legacy of crass genius that won’t soon be matched. We also discuss musician Pat Hare, the man whose blistering and heavily distorted guitar playing from the 1950s helped to lay the groundwork for heavy metal.

You should definitely check out their fantastic 2016 album “Willow’s Weep,” which this track is from.  Ain’t It Funky Now — Jimmy McGriff You know we love the funky 1970s deep cuts — Jimmy McGriff is no exception.  La Fat Fur — Connan Mockasin & Devonté Hynes We were already big fans of Devonté Hynes’ project Blood Orange, and we love this unique collaboration he did with New Zealand-born psychedelic pop artist Connan Mockasin.  Fig in Leather — Devendra Banhart Venezualan-American Devendra Banhart makes some of the most unique genre-blending indie music today. We love this upbeat track from his latest album.   No Tears to Cry — Paul Weller The former leader of The Jam, one of Great Britain’s premier rock acts in the 70s and 80s, comes back with his own grandiose rock n roll.  Summer Madness S.A. — Karriem Riggins Talented multi-instrumentalist and producer Karriem Riggins effortlessly blends jazz, hip-hop and more in his unique work.  Words to My Song — Dry Bread Dig this dark and funky deep cut from Cyril “Dry Bread” Ferguson.  Breathing Underwater — The Barbaras The Barbaras are a fantastic lost surf-punk gem from Memphis, who worked to record their music with influential rocker Jay Reatard before his untimely death in 2010, with the result that only one album of tracks (discovered posthumously in his archives) was ever released.  Endless Talk — Wild Flag Wild Flag was a short-lived rock supergroup made up of members of Sleater-Kinney and others, led by Carrie Brownstein (if you don’t know her from music, you know her from Portlandia!) If I Had a Hammer — Billy Preston Legendary organist and Beatles collaborator covers this American classic (originally by Pete Seeger) in a groovy instrumental way.
