Grace Yan learned early in life that to make your dreams come true, hard work and determination are two keys to success and that there are no shortcuts. After her family immigrated to Canada from Manila, Philippines in 1980, Grace saw first-hand the effort and hours it required to make her family's small business in Calgary a success. Grace's dad Gil and mother Arceli have been major inspirations in her life. Her mother – who was a math teacher in the Philippines – demonstrated that it's possible to be successful in more than one calling, serving as a registered nurse at three different Calgary hospitals in a career spanning 40 years before her passing in 2015. Grace initially pursued a career as a paralegal in 1991, helping people from all walks of life. She branched out into a successful career in real estate with several firms and is currently a Director of Sales and Marketing at Coldwell Banker MC Commercial. Through both professions, Grace has developed several valuable skills, including the importance of collaboration and the art of negotiation. They continue to serve her well today, and will be an asset as the next Mayor of Calgary. Emile Gabriel's father was his first role model. Despite knowing that he had only a few months to live, he continued to work tirelessly to the last minute in the service of others. As a doctor, he was dedicated to his community, especially the poor, whom he chose to treat for free. He passed away at the young age of 42, due to kidney disease, but passed on his commitment and passion for serving others to his children (Emile was 11, 1/2 years young at that time). His mother, a widow, trying to learn how to cope with this tragedy, left alone with the responsibility of raising six young children on her own with a small pension, remained a strong loving example for her children. Her sacrifice, wisdom and guidance molded her children into strong, persevering individuals with a deep desire to give to others and to look for solutions. As a young person, Emile was instilled with the values of giving to others and motivated by his parent's inspiring examples. As an immigrant, he came to Canada with just $200 in his pocket. In order to support himself, he took jobs like working in a bakery, paint manufacturing firm, warehouses, loading docks, and security officer at Calgary Airport. With his Civil Engineering degree, he worked with Alberta Transportation, building Highways, Bridges and Airports. During that time, he went to the University of Alberta to upgrade his knowledge in transportation. As an entrepreneur by nature, he took a leap into the business world, started a small paving company, followed by starting his own businesses in the food industry (coffee trucks and small food kiosks at the farmers market). His first-hand personal experience, made him sensitive to other Calgarians' struggle in making a living, building a life and providing for family. Throughout his learning journey, he took advanced courses in cities' planning and transportation at both Universities of Alberta and Calgary. Later, he obtained a PhD degree in Project Management Specialization from the University of Calgary and works now as a management consultant providing service to a variety of firms and organizations. This combination of knowledge and experience makes him a good fit to lead a growing city like our city of Calgary. A born-and-raised Calgarian from the southeast community of Dover, Jeromy's family story is one of hard work and sacrifice. Jeromy's father arrived in Canada in 1957 as a refugee from communist Hungary, and his mother traces her roots to settlers who emigrated from Eastern Europe to homestead and build a better life. Jeromy learned from a young age that anything is possible if you are willing to roll up your sleeves and work for it. His early years included delivering flyers at the age of 8 years old, bussing tables, laboring in an Ogden shingle factory and working his way through school. Jeromy and Bryon shared the same passion when it comes to endurance sports (Triathlon) and attempt to make the connection between 'racing' and the perseverance and discipline that is required to be a leader in Calgary. Today Bryon will Interview one of Calgary's Mayor Candidate Ian Chiang. Ian migrated to Canada in 1987 from Brunei and after he met his wife but his sister have been living in Calgary for five years. So e they choose Calgary as their first Resident. Ian was doing engineering design and drafting. After graduating he got a job and was being part of a project in a city, Bonnie Brook, which was a city project in a wastewater Treatment plan. Ian believes that there are different managers for each department or jurisdiction, he want to inspire them and remind them what really is their role for the city of Calgary. Is it for the money only? Ian is really focus on the youth of Calgary, he also want to encourage their future as a citizen of Calgary to do better.

Ken Crockett's been a builder from the day he was born. He grew up in a family business that included renovations; new home construction and custom log homes. One of his very first jobs was in a local home hardware store, loading customer vehicles and preparing deliveries. This was his beginning in the building industry, and he hasn't looked back once. Bryon had the great opportunity to chat with the award-winning YYC author, Marcello Di Cintio … Marcello is a Marda Loop resident and the author of five books, including Walls: Travels Along the Barricades which won the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing and Pay No Heed to the Rockets: Palestine in the Present Tense, winner of the W. O. Mitchell City of Calgary Book Prize. Di Cintio’s magazine writing has appeared in appeared in publications such as The International New York Times, The Walrus, Canadian Geographic and Afar. Di Cintio has served as a writer-in-residence at the Calgary Public Library, the University of Calgary and the Palestine Writing workshop. One lucky winner will have an opportunity to dedicate their own park bench for a three-year term.
