Lightning Labs announces a new protocol to bring new use cases to Bitcoin

Lightning Labs, the company behind the Lightning Network, has developed a new protocol that can help introduce more use cases to the Bitcoin network, the company's CTO Olaoluwa Osuntokun announced April 5, noting that he designed the protocol, dubbed Taro. According to Osuntokun, Taro's integration will enable the issuance of assets and collectibles on the Bitcoin network. The protocol will also allow all Lightning Network participants to enjoy the benefit of Lightning's nearly free, almost instant, global transaction capability. All this without having to put up with BTC's current volatility. Essentially, the protocol will introduce assets like stablecoins to the Bitcoin network, letting BTC adopters increase or dial down their exposure to volatility. This feature will be especially beneficial for populations that have a low tolerance for BTC's volatility, due to their socioeconomic status. Leveraging Taproot To unlock these functionalities, Taro will use Taproot — the latest update to the Bitcoin network that became active in November 2021. Taproot enhanced the security, privacy, and transaction throughput of Bitcoin. Additionally, it introduced smart contract capabilities to Bitcoin's blockchain. By leveraging Taproot, Taro can also depend on Bitcoin's Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus model to ensure the correct ordering of transactions and mitigate the risk of double-spending. Explaining why Lightning Labs seeks to integrate Taro, the company's CEO Elizabeth Stark said, One of our core tenets at Lightning Labs is solving real problems for real people, and we've talked to myriad community members in emerging markets who've told us what a big difference stablecoins on bitcoin and Lightning would make in their economies. Slow but steady growth While protocol development maintains the Bitcoin fundamentals, conservative changes create room for what developers can build on Bitcoin and the Lightning Network. Taro's relationship with Taproot demonstrates such changes. At the moment, BTC functions as a commodity. However, the combination of Taro and Lightning Network brings the flagship cryptocurrency even closer to serving as a means of payment. Recently, Wyoming Senator Cynthia Lummis said BTC would quickly become a means of payment. Her belief stems from the fact that BTC came out of a whitepaper that didn't include means of payment. However, Lightning Network filled this gap by providing a payment method for BTC. To this end, Lummis believes such advancements will ultimately lead to further innovation in the payment space.

Goldman would then have until April 15 to respond. “Because the Fourth Circuit remanded this case to the District Court to address only the issue of standing, the parties shall not file any motions or other pleadings beside those listed above,” Novak wrote in his ruling. (read the March 21 order)For more information, read Graham Moomaw’s report on Monday’s hearing in the Virginia Mercury. City seeking input on Fifth Street safetyCharlottesville is pursuing Smart Scale funding for improvements to Fifth Street Extended as part of an overall effort to prevent future fatalities on the roadway. The city is looking at the area between Old Ridge Street and Harris Road. “This study focuses on improvement concepts that target known needs, reduce community impacts, and address all modes in a cost-effective manner,” reads the introduction. “Projects and solutions may be considered for future funding through local, regional, state and/or federal transportation programs — but not without first getting YOUR INPUT!”According to an information sheet on the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission’s Smart Scale page, there is no scope or cost estimate for the project. “Charlottesville identified the need for a project between Cherry/Elliott and Harris Roads in the 5th Ridge McIntire Multimodal Corridor Study, in Streets That Work, and in the Bike and Pedestrian Master Plan,” reads that page. “Considerations for the application include redesigning the intersection, enhancing multimodal facilities along the corridor, improving access, and enhancing transit access, lighting, and landscape of the area. The city has already been awarded Smart Scale funds to address the intersection of Elliott Avenue, Ridge Street, Cherry Avenue, and Fifth Street Extended. (read the application)The Charlottesville-Albemarle Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Policy Board will discuss the Smart Scale projects at their virtual meeting on 2 p.m. Thursday. (meeting info)Rogers recommends two cent property tax increase for CY22Charlottesville City Council held a public hearing Monday on the real estate tax rate and personal property tax rate for the fiscal year that begins on July 1. Before then and before the general public comment period, Interim City Manager Michael C. Rogers presented Council with several ways forward on raising funds in the next five years for paying up to $75 million for the renovation of Buford Middle School. (review the presentation)“Several of you asked that we dig a little deeper and come back with several scenarios as we try to get to some resolution on how to deal with this issue,” Rogers said. The presentation featured another lesson from Senior Budget Management Analyst Krisy Hammill about the city’s looming debt crisis. “We have approximately $85 million that’s currently outstanding,” Hammill said. Hamill said the city currently pays about $11 million each year for debt service and that amount would drop if no further debt was issued. “Of this outstanding debt, about 28 percent of that is for school-related projects that have already been completed,” Hammill said. Hammill presented multiple scenarios, all which assume an annual growth rate of 1.5 percent over the next from the real estate property tax as well as two percent in revenues from meals tax rate. Hammill said it is the size of the project that is presenting an accounting problem. Without it, the city would expect to have a total five-year CIP of $82.4 million, requiring the sale of $46.9 million in bonds. “With the other projects that are on the Capital Improvement Plan list, they are of such amounts that we can manage our CIP within our affordability,” Hammill said. But adding a $75 million project will increase the total CIP to $157.4 million, requiring the sale of $121.9 million. VMDO, the architectural firm hired by the school system for reconfiguration, has suggested splitting those bonds sales over the period with $2.5 million this year, $20 million in FY24, $32.5 million in FY25, and $20 million in FY26. “Our annual debt service payment is moving from the $11.4 million that we’ve been talking about up to about $22 million in 2032,” Hammill said. “This is roughly equivalent to about a two cent tax increase over the next four years if we were going to that incrementally.” Other scenarios include a seven cent tax increase in FY23 in order to build up a larger reserve to pay off debt service. Another would be to reduce the city’s cost for reconfiguration to $50 million. Kevin Rotty, a financial consultant who advises the city on long-term debt, said other options would be to reduce city spending as well as to continue exploring state funding in advance of a special session to resolve the state budget that has not yet been called. “There’s a couple bills in the General Assembly right now which are talking about school construction,” Rotty said. “Certainly the city is not unique in having some school needs here.”The exact funding scenario depends on multiple variables, but the main lever Council gets to control is the tax rate. Rogers weighs in with his recommendationRogers reminded Council that the city will have to pick up the tab for paying 15 firefighters after a federal SAFER grant runs out. Collective bargaining will also have a cost as well. “There are some big opportunities in transit and opportunities to make progress on our climate plan but we’ve got to add money to match the funds that are available from the [federal government and the state,” Rogers said. Rogers had this recommendation for Council.“The proposed school reconfiguration has not been integrated into the city’s capital improvements program in a manner that will allow City Council to make a coordinated funding plan,” Rogers said. Nevertheless, he said there was a need to ensure that the city could cover its obligations for past needs as well as future ones. “For the FY23 budget I recommend that Council should enact a two cent real estate tax and set the money aside within the capital projects fund earmarked as the beginning of an annual funding program to generate funds for school reconfiguration,” Rogers said. Rogers recommended delaying a bond issue for reconfiguration for the school in FY23 until after a long-term plan could be developed. He also suggested a rehaul of the entire capital improvement program to be ready for next year’s budget. “Let’s move forward but not too fast,” Rogers said. “Let’s take a pause and start putting away some money for this project.”Rogers said that would give more time to see how the statewide conversation on school construction funding plays out. Similar stories:Council’s emphasis on housing issues reflected in proposed capital budget, December 16, 2018Council wants more info before giving direction on capital spending, November 18, 2020Charlottesville's Draft Capital Budget includes $50 million for Middle School reconfiguration, January 28, 2021Charlottesville Budget staff continues to warn Council of approaching debt limit, April 1, 2021Council discusses tax increases to help cover $60 million Buford upgrades, August 2, 2021Charlottesville Planning Commission gets first look at FY23-FY27 Capital Budget, November 29, 2021Prepping for Charlottesville's FY23 Capital Improvement Program, January 29, 2022Second shout-out goes to Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society Today’s first subscriber-fueled shout-out is for an upcoming panel discussion on local history. Rogers is recommending a two cent increase this year for the school project. Council also advertised keeping the personal property tax rate at $4.20 per $100 of assessed value, though Commissioner of Revenue Todd Divers said a sharp increase in the value of used vehicles will increase bills. He told Council what the equalized rate would be. “You’re looking at a rate of probably around $3.22,” Divers said. “If don’t do anything, you’re probably going to see an additional $2 million.” Elizabeth Stark, the co-chair of the Charlottesville Democratic Socialists of America, called for the full increase of ten cents to support collective bargaining, $10 million a year for affordable housing, and other priorities. “I ask that the city use all levers in their power to generate income,” Stark said. “Though all tax options are regressive, an increase to the property tax coupled with tax relief for low-wealth neighbors and an increase to the lodging tax seems to be the solution to me.”However, Jamie Fitzgerald said a full increase of ten cents will hurt his ability to remain as a renter in Charlottesville.“I rent from an owner that does not live in Charlottesville,” Fitzgerald said. “The owner performs zero maintenance on this house and the house is rapidly deteriorating.”Fitzgerald predicted his rent would be increased to cover the cost, which would force him to vacate. “I’m sure I’m not the only renter in Charlottesville facing this issue,” Fitzgerald said. Chris Meyer encouraged Council to raise the property tax rate because he said Charlottesville is undertaxed. “We need to get moving,” Meyer said. “I appreciate the city manager’s suggestion on at least a two cent raise,” Meyer said. “I would look at potentially more.” After the tax rate public hearing, the public comment period was opened on the budget. No one spoke directly about what to do with the personal property tax rate. Brad Slocum no longer lives in Charlottesville and now commutes in from Staunton. He urged Council to increase funding for Charlottesville Area Transit in order to help the city meet its climate goals.“One of the best ways to do this is to ensure director of transit, Garland Williams, has the budget he and his staff need to expand the city’s bus fleet to achieve 15-minute fixed route service,” Williams said. Brian Campbell of the Charlottesville Democratic Socialists of America called on Council to make further cuts to the police budget and to require transparency.“Charlottesville spends $19 million annually on police,” Campbell said. “Lynchburg, a city nearly twice as big and with more officers also spends $19 million on police. On a per capita basis, Charlottesville spends more on police than Albemarle, Waynesboro, Staunton, Roanoke, Harrisonburg, Blacksburg, and Lynchburg as previously noted. Why do Charlottesville police spend so much more than their peers? No one knows.” Katie Yared, a fourth year student at the University of Virginia, called on Council to enact a plastic bag tax for FY23. “As I’m sure you know, the Albemarle County budget proposes that they will implement a tax on plastic bags by January 1, 2023, with a projected revenue of $20,000,” Yared  said. “Following the lead of Albemarle County, the city of Charlottesville has an opportunity to significantly reduce plastic waste and to incentivize the use of reusable bags.” Members of the Tree Commission sought additional funding in two areas.“First, we proposed planting 200 trees per year so that we can plant more trees than are being removed,” said Mark Rylander. That would take an allocation of $100,000 but the City Manager’s budget only includes $75,000. Rylander said the Tree Commission would like another $105,000 a year to address the destruction of ash trees by the Emerald Ash Borer. Several speakers asked for additional funding for the Public Housing Association of Residents including its executive director, Shelby Edwards. The current level of funding for FY22 is $41,000 but the Vibrant Community process for determining funding for outside agencies only recommended $21,035 for FY23. “Please fund PHAR especially our PHAR internship problem, and also our development-led redevelopment efforts,” Edwards said. The capital budget anticipates spending $3 million in bond-raised funds on public  housing redevelopment for each of the next four years. There’s a Community Budget Forum scheduled for tonight night at 6 p.m. The meals tax rate will be on the agenda for Council’s next regularly scheduled meeting on April 4. Support the program!Special announcement of a continuing promo with Ting! Today’s Patreon-fueled shout-out comes from an anonymous supporter who wants to say - "We keep each other safe. Wear a mask, wash your hands, and keep your distance."There are another 863 cases of COVID-19 in the Commonwealth reported by the Virginia Department of Health this morning and another 17 deaths for a total of 2,427 to date. The seven-day average for positive tests is at 6.5 percent, down from 6.7 percent posted yesterday. The Thomas Jefferson Health District added another 21 cases and still reports 43 deaths. Yesterday that was downgraded from 44. Kathryn Goodman, spokeswoman for the Thomas Jefferson Health District, told me that ”after further investigation of the fatality, the case was moved to another health district. “*Classes at the University of Lynchburg will move to on-line only for the next week following the news that there are at least five COVID-19 cases among its student population. The school began its fall semester with in-person classes on August 12 but will meet virtually through next Thursday. Twenty-one students are in quarantine and another ten are in isolation.“Some of these recent positives and suspected cases have occurred between roommates,” wrote President Alison Morrison-Shetlar in a release. “Still others have come about when students let down their guard in small gatherings in individual rooms and apartments. If we are to stay ahead of the virus and return to in-person classes next week, this is where you can make a difference.”Eastern Mennonite University announced yesterday that they are delaying plans to open to in-person classes on August 25 after four student leaders tested positive for COVID-19. “All other student leaders and Residence Life staff who were in sustained contact with them are now in quarantine,” reads an email to students. “We have since learned from our contact tracing that there is a wider group of Student Life staff personnel that we need to quarantine out of an abundance of caution.”*The Albemarle Board of Supervisors has endorsed the idea of building a roundabout at the intersection of the John Warner Parkway and East Rio Road, and agreed to apply for funding from the Virginia Department of Transportation through their Smart Scale program. In June, the Board deadlocked on a proposal for over 300 apartment buildings in part because of stated concerns about additional traffic. Albemarle transportation planner Kevin McDermott said a study of the whole Rio Road corridor is underway to accommodate those concerns.“That corridor study is really going to be evaluating these intersections along with many others in the corridor and in reviewing this with our selected consultant on that project, we really looked at that John Warner Parkway roundabout as the only real option we had there to address the traffic problem,” McDermott said. The intersection is the #14 transportation priority in Albemarle and the project is estimated to cost $7.8 million. McDermott is also suggesting spending $2 million in local tax money to get design for the roundabout underway. Smart Scale projects will be ranked according to a series of metrics and those scores will be released in January. The Board of Supervisors also voted to approve a special use permit to allow Scott’s Ivy Exxon to expand from three service bays to seven. *The Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission (TJPDC) will try again this evening to hold a meeting in August. Their first attempt two weeks ago failed to meet a quorum in part because of large storms that hit the region. Among the items on the agenda is a discussion of the Rental and Mortgage Relief program that the TJPDC is administering. On Monday, one person told Charlottesville City Council of their concern over the way the project is being handled in Charlottesville and Albemarle, where a hotline goes to the United Way. “Myself and other volunteers in the community have been outside talking to people that are heading into court and they have all said that they are unable to get through to that hotline and that the only way to make contact is to basically spend a day just calling and calling,” said Elizabeth Stark, adding that people who are about to be evicted do not have that time. TJPDC executive director Chip Boyles said the situation is known to him and that the problem is happening across the state. “We are very much aware of the delays and we are working not just with our local governments but also with the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development where the funding came from is also working to help all of the localities with this problem,” Boyles said. The TJPDC will also discuss regional efforts to bring more broadband to rural communities. *In other meetings today, the Albemarle Natural Heritage Committee meets at 5 p.m. and will discuss the county’s stream health initiative among other items. (meeting info)The Charlottesville Human Rights Commission will meet at 6 p.m. Among the items on the agenda are a discussion of the return of University of Virginia students and the effect on community health. They will also prepare for their joint meeting with City Council which is scheduled for Tuesday at 3 p.m. (agenda)The Fifth and Avon Community Advisory Committee will meet virtually at 7 p.m. and will get an update on greenway planning as well as the future Biscuit Run county park. Today’s installment comes courtesy of the Charlottesville Podcasting Network, recording and presenting interesting audio about our community since 2005. Search through the archives at cvillepodcast.com. *Governor Ralph Northam and the leaders of five other states have written to the Rockefeller Foundation to announce their intent to work together to purchase rapid COVID-19 testing technology consistent with a plan put together by the foundation last month. “Testing is the only way out of our present disaster, and it will remain the case until a vaccine or effective therapeutics are widely available,” reads the Foundation’s website, which contains a 51-page report with a strategy to get national testing capacity to 30 million tests a week. Northam and the governors of Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan and Ohio announced an intent to enter into a compact to negotiate with two manufacturers of antigen tests to order 500,000 kits which promise test results within 15 to 20 minutes. The Rockefeller Foundation will provide support with logistics. “The states are leading America’s national response to COVID-19,” Northam said in a press release. “We are bringing together this bipartisan, multi-state coalition to combine our purchasing power and get rapid testing supplies to our communities as quickly as possible. The people in our six states want to see action, and together, we’re delivering.”North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper announced later in the day that his state would also join the compact. Northam is expected to hold a press conference at 2 p.m. today. *The Virginia Department of Health is reporting another 798 new cases of COVID-19 today, the lowest one-day total since July 9, when 613 cases were reported. Another 30 deaths were counted for a total of 2,274 to date. The seven-day average for positive PCR tests remains at 7.2 percent. *The Charlottesville City Council spent three hours yesterday on a “listening session” on policing in Charlottesville. City Manager Tarron Richardson said the event was arranged after a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on George Floyd’s neck for eight minutes, killing him. Dr. Richardson said many in the community have contacted him and Council. “We received a lot of emails, phone calls, and a lot of one-on-one conversations with many residents in our community pertaining to defunding the police department,” Dr. Richardson said. “What can we do to improve our overall relationship with the community through our working with the police and the community as a whole?” Dr. Richardson said he and Council wanted to hear from people about how they would define “defunding the police.”  Elizabeth Stark said she would rather use the term “reinvesting.”“Right now we spend $18 million so that police can respond to mental health calls, substance use disorder calls, chronic homeless, and domestic and sexual assaults,” Stark said. “These are not activities that are well-suited to police responses so the defund movement is asking that we shift funds away from paying the police to respond to these kinds of calls… and support the community by putting into place a robust network that is trained and capable to answer these calls with the kind of sensitivity can warrant.” Don Gathers, a former member of the Police Civilian Review Board, asked Councilors to support a more robust CRB with the power to subpoena officers. “If we could take some steps to try to put some things in place so that when things do occur, we have a means, a method, and a vehicle in order to check those things before they balloon out of control, we certainly need to do so,” Gathers said. In all, 42 people spoke and 1,200 people watched the event live, according to city communications director Brian Wheeler. The session can be seen on the city’s website. Dr. Richardson said Council will return to the topic in the near future. The General Assembly will convene for a special session on August 18. Pre-filed bills include one from Senator Thomas Norment that would ban the police from using neck restraints.*In government meetings today, the Albemarle Board of Supervisors meets at 2 p.m. and will hold four public hearings in the evening. In one, Verizon is seeking permission to build a 116.7 foot tall cell tower at the intersection of Wild Turkey Lane and Route 250 West. The county’s wireless policy requires a public hearing before the Board because this location is within 200 feet of a Scenic Byway. (staff report) In another, a developer is seeking a rezoning for 32.52 acres at the northern edge of Albemarle’s Places29 designated growth area from rural areas (RA) to Planned Residential Development (PRD) for a maximum of 100 residential units. This project is along the North Fork of the Rivanna River. The Planning Commission first heard the item on March 10 and voted 5-1 to recommend approval on May 19. (staff report)The Fluvanna Board of Supervisors meets in person today beginning at 4 p.m. with a meeting with several items related to how that county will use federal CARES Acts funding. That ranges from an agreement with the Community Investment Collaborative to budget transfers for the current and previous fiscal year. They’ll also take action on a fire and rescue fleet study. (agenda)And the Jefferson Madison Regional Library will hold a virtual panel discussion on the racial diversity in the library system’s collections. The event will be moderated by Siri Russell, Albemarle County’s director of Equity and Inclusion. (register)If this programming is useful to you, please consider a regular donation through Patreon. Location: Skype Date: Wednesday, 15th January Project: Tales from the Crypt & Rabbit Hole Recap Role: Host Welcome to the Beginner's Guide to Bitcoin. Bitcoin can be intimidating for beginners. The protocol is complicated, the community can be aggressive and unforgiving, silly mistakes can lose you money, and it is easy to succumb to altcoin marketing.  Bitcoin does though, offer you the opportunity to hold a new type of monetary asset, one which can't be seized by the government and is censorship resistance and It has the potential to change the way the world.  The goal of What Bitcoin Did has always been about making things simple; there are no stupid questions, and the show is here to help beginners navigate this new world. To kick off 2020, we are launching a special series to help beginners understand Bitcoin. We will be looking at the basics from breaking down the protocol to explaining the economics and discussing the potential societal shift.  Beginners Guide Part 5 - The History of Bitcoin with Marty Bent On October 31st 2008 Satoshi published the Bitcoin Whitepaper on a little known cryptography mailing list. There had previously been many attempts at digital cash, so when the whitepaper was released, it was met with a healthy amount of scepticism.  A few months later on January 3rd 2009 Satoshi Nakamoto mined the genesis block and included the message “Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks”. The message was important and indicated Satoshi's plan for a new financial system. In the 11 years that have passed Bitcoin has gone from a niche experiment to a network worth over $160 billion, but the history has been rollercoaster. Anyone new coming into Bitcoin is likely to hear about critical points in history, and these events helped define Bitcoin and at times teach valuable lessons. January 12th 2009 - The first Bitcoin transaction between Satoshi Nakamoto and Hal Finney March 2010 - bitcoinmarket.com started operating as the first Bitcoin exchange May 22nd 2010 - Lazlo Hanyecz pays 10,000BTC for 2 pizzas November 27th 2010 - SlushPool becomes the first Bitcoin mining pool February 2011 - The Silk Road opens, utilising Bitcoin as its currency April 26th 2011 - Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto leaves Bitcoin in the hands of Gavin Andreson June 14th 2011 - Wikileaks starts accepting donations in Bitcoin. Charlie eventually pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting the operation of an unlicensed money transmitting business. He was sentenced to two years in prison February 7th 2014 - Mt. Gox, the largest Bitcoin exchange at the time, halted withdrawals after a security breach. On February 24th 2014 the exchange went offline with 744,408 Bitcoin stolen. July 2014 - GHash exceeded 51% of the hash rate July 17th 2014 - The New York BitLicense is proposed to place regulations on any company or person that uses cryptocurrencies residing in New York. The community were divided between Segregated Witness and/or bigger block sizes as a way of reducing congestion on the blockchain. This culminated on August 1st with the BCash fork. Cryptotwitter Curation, Politics, and What's Next for Arry s1ep20 - Monday July 29, 2019. Reviewing the current price of bitcoin using the Blockfolio app: At $9,518 at 12:40pm and for #SatoshiMath $1.00 = 10,506 satoshis. at $10k/bitcoin, you get 10,000 satoshis. Because at $1.00 / 0.00010000 = 10,000 satoshis Dae consumes a lot of content daily - and he's sharing the highlights, specially curated for you. Cypto Twitter is a thing. Bitcoin Baby (aka #theQuinoa) is wearing a gold ring from his great-aunt in Seoul, Korea, another SoV (Store of Value). Recently celebrated the 100 days for #theQuinoa - we recently had a party as with Korean culture. John DeVaDoss of NEO North America interacted on CryptoTwitter. Dragonchain sticker is high quality. Dae is leveling up (or into the Rabbit Hole) further on Austrian economics. Stephan Livera gets some great guests on his podcast. Stephan is a old bit coiner and in Austrian economics. SLP52 episode with Jack Dorsey and Elizabeth Stark (recorded 2/17/2019) — check out this podcast episode because it is fascinating, and invigorating (at least for Dae). Dae is saying there's another bear coming into the market right now. On Jack Dorsey, FYI $SQ doing well, Twitter stock is doing well. Hatching Twitter - great book. It was supposed to be made into a movie - but not sure if it ever happened. After reading this book, Dae had a horrible impression of Jack. Have to remember there are always 3 sides to any story. Lolli is focused on getting bitcoin into as many hands as possible - then it's more stable in currency form. Maybe Arry can see if which of the candidates for Seattle's City Council will accept bitcoin for donations. More mentions of Stephan Livera (Austrian economics) and a show with local Seattle Vijay Boyapati (SLP71) another one definitely worth checking out. Arry's really concerned about safety - especially with Dae and Arry's personal experiences with acts of violence. Stewardship and safety. Arry is rooting for the wild card, Ari Hoffman. He's a nice guy, who's a father, community, Jewish, resilient, persistent, person, business man, and cares for happiness for children…. And feels he understands the need for safety. Arry's thinking about doing more to try and get more experiences (like door belling, hosting an event). Political candidates cannot likely get bitcoin for donations - Arry believes it may be a website and likely a banking issue that would not allow that. Dae suggests Freakonomics Radio podcast - Episode 356, America's Hidden Duopoly, which frames the system of conservatives and liberals as a business, not as politics. It's a thriving business. Arry's exploring venture labs, looking at being a turnaround executive for private equity firms. Future guests will be coming! If you'd like to join us for a show, please reach out via twitter! Events coming up: * July 31st, WTIA sponsored Cascadia Blockchain Council community happy hour - drinks, food and views. Thank you for listening y'all! Please share Windshield Time with your friends and family. Would love help with your shiniest 5-star ratings and comments. #togetherWeRise Be nice to each other out there and #stackSats using #satoshiMath Closing out with Dae's old friend Tracy. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/windshieldtime21/message

In our first episode of en(gender)ed, we referenced the importance of recognizing and advocating for gender justice reforms alongside other forms of social justice, including environmental and economic justice.  On today's episode, we address the intersection of these issues, in particular, with respect to migrants and refugees who are at risk of increased illness, lost productivity/wages, disease and other public health threats, and even death.  Female migrants and their children are also subject to higher risk of human and sex trafficking. On today's episode, our guest is Cat Song, Co-Founder and General Counsel of Exsulcoin, a blockchain startup creating solutions for refugees.  Exsulcoin is a peer-to-peer marketplace for refugee integration and offers solutions including paying for tutoring, mentorship, or nanowork tasks.  Cat founded the startup with her brother, James, in response to the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar, formerly called Burma. A long-time advocate for anti-human trafficking initiatives, immigration, and legal rights for low-income populations, Cat is here to speak with us today about her work with Exsulcoin and how it is one part of the environmental, economic and gender justice solution needed for all migrants and refugees. During our conversation, Cat and I referenced the following resources: Burma Task Force's website which provides information on the Rohingya and other minority groups How migration and climate change impacts women The impact of climate change and migration on sex trafficking Blockchain 101--for beginners The Global Impact Investment Network's (GIIN) Impact Reporting and Investment Standards or IRIS--the catalog of generally accepted performance metrics used by impact investors The "Impact Continuum" An article by CoinTelegraph on gender inequality in blockchain and crypto CoinDance's estimates on gender participation distribution in the crypto community Reddit survey on MyEther users by gender Elizabeth Stark's tweet about "women in crypto" --- Thanks for tuning in to the en(gender)ed podcast! "Recipes for Real Life"-Work. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! In this episode we talk with Elizabeth Stark of Brooklyn Supper, a blog whose mission is creating simple, delicious meals with local, seasonal products. Even on a weeknight! You don't need a fancy copper pot or a million gadgets. These are recipes you will actually make. Recipes like Brown Butter Madeleines and Roasted Winter Squash Enchiladas. Some are her own while others are the work of fellow food writers promoting their cookbooks. Which is great because publishing houses increasingly rely on their authors to be their own marketing departments. Will she ever do one of her own? She's a bit on the fence. It's something Elizabeth would like to do but it's a strange time for publishing. How do you find a new audience while at the same time make something rewarding and lasting for yourself and your readers? Without gimmicks? It's a tall order when food trends run the show. I applaud her steadfastness in wanting to wait until "The Big Magic" happens. Although Elizabeth is the face of Brooklyn Supper this is a team effort. Husband Brian Campbell acts as editor and sounding board. Together, they collaborate on the blog's mission, direction, and recipes. What's it like to work in food writing with your spouse? Any special challenges? Elizabeth and Brian started Brooklyn Supper back in 2008 when the farm to table movement was just finding its legs. Their hard work has paid off. Brooklyn Supper won Saveur magazine's "Editors' Choice for Most Delicious Food Blog" in 2015 and Elizabeth's writing has been featured on the sites of some major players including Redbook, Food 52, Real Simple, Gourmet Live, and Tasting Table. How has the vision for Brooklyn Supper changed over the years? How has food writing changed in the past decade? We talk about this at length, the way it's become more visual with less in-depth pieces and more listicles and bullet points. What then? And what about those of us interested in blogging professionally? What are some pro tips and pitfalls to avoid? How about pitching editors your ideas? We go into great depth here. One key piece of advice is to ask for what you want. If you're not happy with what they're offering, ask for more. Know your worth and value it. All they can say is no. Companies always want to offer you "exposure" for your writing. In the beginning, that's great. After some experience is earned, not so much. Be willing to be flexible. This is a cyclical business so you have to adapt. Have a clear focus. A mission. Direct all of your posts to that mission. Their ability to adapt the blog was tested in 2012 when Elizabeth and Brian decided to move from New York to Charlottesville. Seasonal and local mean very different things here because our foodshed is completely different. Pro tip: if you move to a new area, sign up for your local CSA. You will learn what is seasonal and when in your own area. Luckily, Brooklyn Supper adapted well while at the same time never doubting its value. Elizabeth and Brian have been able to channel that value into corporate partnerships with some major heavy hitters including French's Mustard and Whole Foods, making it one of the most successful blogs around. How does she decide what is a good fit? How does she negotiate terms? And what are some of the more interesting press releases she gets from companies? Elizabeth's photography is also a huge reason for their ongoing success. She has a background in painting and the living room walls are covered with beautiful serene abstracts evoking nature. That artistic eye translates to her food photos which are gorgeously simple and direct. No fancy fake-rustic Mason jars here. It's as if someone just placed the food down and walked back to the kitchen because they forgot something. Like movement just happened one millisecond before. I love them. The tips she offers are invaluable and ones I adopted the minute I left. What is her artistic process? It is fascinating to me how writing, photography, and cooking, have a lot of similar formulas to complete if you want to do them well. Studying the masters. Emulating the ones you identify with until eventually you have the courage to tweak things and make them your own. We cover a lot and as a food writer I envision myself listening to it more than once when I need some inspiration for my own writing and photography. I hope you'll enjoy this episode. Wishing you a peaceful holiday full of laughter and tasty bites. I'm grateful for your readership and your listenership. Thank you. There are few subjects more potentially divisive as the Free Culture Movement. Free Culture activists believe in a future in which people will be free to remix and distribute creative works like literature, movies, music, software, and images. These are the folks who can toss around phrases like ‘Free as in Speech versus Free as in Beer’ to illustrate distinctions in legal code. A world where anyone can feel free to edit a photo, remix a song or video, or modify a piece of software without the constraint of excessive laws or artificial limits – sounds great, right? But it raises more questions than you might think. Gabriella Coleman is an Assistant Professor of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University who has given a lot of thought to the role of genre and piracy in how we might build a Free Culture that works. She sat down with our guest host Elizabeth Stark for a word or two on some of the toughest questions facing Free Culture.
