The Compassion Initiative: Dr Stan Steindl and Dr James Kirby
Stan says farewell to The Compassion Initiative Podcast, launching the Compassion in a T-Shirt podcast to complement his YouTube channel. Please follow at your favourite podcast platform! James pivots and The Compassion Initiative Podcast becomes the Compassionate Mind Research Group Podcast, a continued source of great content on the science and practice of compassion. This (never say never) episode: In this episode of Compassion in a T-Shirt, I welcome Associate Professor James Kirby, a leading figure in compassion research. James Kirby combines his extensive experience as a clinical psychologist and researcher to offer unique insights into the science and art of compassion. Drawing from his extensive research, as well as his recent book, Choose Compassion, James discusses a plethora of recent advances in the science of compassion, some of the most interesting findings in others' research as well as his own, considerations around men and compassion, and much more. We also discuss the transition that is underway from our podcast collaboration--The Compassion Initiative Podcast--and our move towards separate projects: my move to consolidating Compassion in a T-Shirt into a YouTube channel and podcast, and his move towards transforming our previous podcast into the Compassionate Mind Research Group Podcast. James is an Associate Professor in the School of Psychology at The University of Queensland and an Honorary Associate Professor at the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University. He co-directs the Compassionate Mind Research Group and is a recognised expert featured on radio, podcasts, articles, and television. Join us as we delve into the transformative power of compassion with someone who truly understands its depth and breadth. Don't miss this enlightening conversation with Associate Professor James Kirby! I have been trying out other podcasts lately, just to get a range of inputs into my thinking, and recently listened to Chris Williamson's Modern Wisdom podcast, Episode #723 ā 15 Lessons from 2023. In that episode, he described how pleased he was to have come up with the concept ātoxic compassionā. According to Williamson, āToxic compassion is the prioritisation of short term emotional comfort over everything else, over truth, reality, actual long term outcomes, flourishing, everything. It optimises for looking good, rather than doing good.ā Today, we're going to delve into the role emotions play in compassion and their profound impact on compassionate decision making and action. There is an intricate and delicate dance between our feelings and the choices we make. And sometimes, believe it or not, our apparent compassion can do more harm than good. Dr Marcela Matos presented the Keynote Address at the 2023 UQ Compassion Symposium. Her title was "The compassion (r)evolution: From easing suffering to awakening flourishing." Marcela gave us a delightful, insightful, and inspiring talk, taking us through her personal and research journey from shame to compassion. A wonderful, enthusiastic audience was there to welcome her and be moved by her talk. I recently had a revelation! Our blocks to self-compassion are often outside of our awareness. This might sound obvious to you, but it gave me food for thought. When someone is considering self-compassion, maybe for the first time, but something difficult to identify keeps getting in the wayā¦what is that something? Can we bring it to awareness? A few weeks ago I made a video about affirming strengths as part of compassion. You can see the video here. To be more accurate, that video was emphasising affirming one's own strengths as part of self-compassion! Last week I made video about compassionate assertiveness. You can see that video here. And I realised that a part of compassionate assertiveness is acknowledging, affirming and appreciating the other person, the person with whom you are trying to be assertive. So, in today's video, I wanted to explore that idea a little more. The role of appreciation in compassionate assertiveness, setting boundaries, and having effective conversations. Hello Compassionistas! I'm diving deep at the moment into all sorts of ways to practice self-compassion. And one of the best? Compassionate assertiveness! Assertiveness training has a long tradition, but when we come at it from a compassionate motivation, then it is a great way to practice self-compassion AND compassion in one friendly yet clear and honest conversation. It's a win/win in the most compassionate of ways! We listen well to understand the wants and needs of the other party. And we listen to ourselves and understand our own wants and needs. And we work out clear boundaries and express them in a way that ACTUALLY IMPROVES RELATIONSHIPS! But practicing compassionate assertiveness is tricky, so here are some helpful tips, and example and a little exercise to get you started! Here, I interview Jamie Woodhouse from Sentientism.info and the Sentientism Podcast. From his website: "Sentientism is a philosophy or worldview ā a way of thinking about what's real and what matters. Sentientists use evidence and reason to work out what to believe in, so don't hold supernatural beliefs. Sentientists also have compassion for every sentient being ā any being capable of experiencing, particularly experiencing suffering or flourishing. Roughly speaking, that's human and non-human animals, but other types of being could conceivably be sentient too." My big takeaway from this conversation with Jamie: Compassion's bottom line: To not needlessly cause suffering. All sentient beings can suffer, & so, at a minimum, compassion requires that we include them in our moral scope & not cause them to suffer. Let me know what you think! Today we will be exploring a daily self-compassion practice known as self-compassion in the mirror! It's an interesting one, and a powerful one. Tone is so important in conveying both feeling and meaning. Often, the tone of our self-talk can be harsh, hostile, critical or condemning. We can attack ourselves, dig the boot in, cut ourselves no slack what-so-ever. We think this'll motivate us, keep us on track, stop us from being lazy, self-indulgent or lax, stop us from making mistakes. But a harsh, critical voice tone actually, mostly, doesn't achieve any of that. It just makes us feel worse. Less motivated, more off track, more likely to give up orā¦make mistakes. So here is a bit about the importance of the sound of our inner voice, including five steps for developing your compassionate voice tones. I was facilitating session 3 of the compassionate mind training course last week, and we were talking about the compassionate self taking compassionate action in response to suffering in others or ourselves. I often speak about three key elements to consider: validation, reassurance and encouragement. But someone in the group mentioned the importance of affirmation, and self-affirmation, and I thought, āthat's brilliant!ā So, here are some thoughts and practical ways to explore and affirm strengths, in others and ourselves, as we cultivate compassion and self-compassion and work to alleviate and prevent suffering. Last week I spoke about how enemies can be our best teachers of compassionā¦they give us the most trouble, and so if we truly wish to practice compassion, then they give us an important opportunity to do so. But I was thinking, there are also enemies of compassion itself. Some of them are near enemies, wolves in sheep clothing, and some of them are far enemies, aspects to human nature that take us a long way away from compassion. So here are the top five enemies of compassion, three near enemies and two far enemies.
In today's video, I'll explore how compassion might help with the day to day battles we find ourselves in with people who give us trouble, our so called enemies. In fact, we can think of it in this way. It's not really those who we already like or love, and love quite easily, that help us to practice our compassion. Obviously, we want to be compassionate towards our friends and loved ones too, but to really deepen and embed a compassionate motivation, it's the people who are difficult to like or difficult to love that offer us a chance to practice. Compassion is a good thing! But our compassion is not boundless. And it's useful to be aware of this, reflect on it a little, and work out what might get in the way of our own compassion. Having boundaries makes complete sense. But our compassion can also be bounded by certain appraisals, judgements, biases that can often be brought to consciousness, examined, and softened or even discarded. So here are five ways our compassion is not boundless. TARGETED PLAYLIST LINK: Compassion in a T-Shirt ARTICLES MENTIONED: Goetz JL, Keltner D, Simon-Thomas E. Something you'd never guess about me is that I love the Greek tragedies! Agamemnon and his family, Hippolytus, Phaedra and Theseus, and, of course, Oedipus, his father and mother.
