In this profound conversation, Andrew Holecek interviews Patrick Harpur about "daimonic reality," exploring a rich, alternative understanding of existence beyond conventional rational thinking. Harpur describes daimons as liminal, shape-shifting entities that exist between physical and immaterial realms, present in cultures worldwide. These beings are characterized by their elusiveness, ambiguity, and ability to mediate between conscious and unconscious worlds, challenging the modern scientific worldview that has systematically banished such mythological understanding. The discussion delves into the differences between the path of soul and spirit, with Harpur arguing that soul embraces complexity and multiplicity, while spirit seeks ascension and unity. They explore how the unconscious mind was formed by repressed mythological entities, and how these beings continue to manifest in modern life through various phenomena like dreams, paranormal experiences, and collective movements. Harpur suggests that re-enchanting the world requires a more imaginative perception, one that sees beyond literal interpretations and recognizes the deeper mythological currents underlying human experience.Throughout the conversation, both Holecek and Harpur emphasize the importance of openness, peripheral awareness, and understanding the mythological principles that shape individual and collective consciousness. They discuss practices for cultivating relationship with these liminal entities, such as poetry, deep attention, and alternative modes of perception. The podcast ultimately presents a compelling argument for a more nuanced, imaginative approach to understanding reality, one that acknowledges the rich, mysterious dimensions of human experience beyond rational, materialistic frameworks.
IntroductionPeople with disabilities are disproportionately affected by climate change; however, they have been traditionally excluded from conversations about national plans and responses to climate change. Including the disabled community in decision making is key to addressing potential harms and designing effective, inclusive solutions. Disabled Community Disproportionately AffectedMany studies provide empirical evidence that climate change poses a particularly great risk for the disabled community. A study in Australia documented that between 2001 and 2018, 89% of heat wave fatalities were people with some type of disability, and actually many had multiple disabilities both physical and mental. Additionally, after Hurricane Harvey in Harris County, Texas in 2017, people with disabilities were disproportionately affected and exposed to harms. Areas flooded by Hurricane Harvey were overrepresented by disabled populations. The highest proportion of people living in public housing being exposed to environmental hazards were people with disabilities. While people with disabilities are particularly vulnerable to natural disasters, they have often been excluded from decision-making surrounding climate change, including in drafting national plans and climate responses. Inclusivity and Accessibility In PracticeEngaging people with disabilities in developing, designing and implementing climate resilient solutions can help protect their livelihoods and autonomy. Meaningful participation can look different in many ways including conducting research to have more data on how people with disabilities are affected and specific ways to help. As well, to develop new technologies and innovations that assist people with disabilities in climate emergencies like early warning systems, communication, and adaptive infrastructure. Spaces can be more inclusive and accessible to people with disabilities. More research is needed on infrastructure design that both reduces emissions and simultaneously will not put disabled people at more risk in climate emergencies, for example, adding ramps and automatic door openers, widening doorways, and having accessible bathrooms. It is also important to host public events in accessible locations to ensure that people with disabilities feel welcomed and valued. Methods of communication should also be accessible like using captions in videos, adding text descriptions and making online materials that work with screen readers so that low vision individuals can also access them. Disability-Inclusive Climate SolutionsIn addition to educating the community about the importance of disability-inclusive climate solutions and for the disabled community to be educated and equipped for climate disaster risk mitigation, it is vital for the disabled community to be part of the large-scale decision making process and promote meaningful participation. By providing people with disabilities with a greater understanding of the impacts that climate change will have on their lives, then they can be more able to respond to effects of climate change and access the resources they need. Expert Dr. Michael Stein points out that everyone knows their own needs and livelihoods best; hence, it is vital to reach out to the disabled community and include them in the conversation and decision making for climate solutions that will support the disabled community who are disproportionately affected by the effects of climate change. Francesca Diano (Roma 1948) è storica dell'arte, studiosa di tradizioni orali e folklore irlandese, saggista, scrittrice e traduttrice letteraria. Bringing a child into the world is often described as one of life's most beautiful and transformative experiences. However, for some new mothers, this journey can be clouded by a silent intruder that lurks in the shadows of their minds – Perinatal Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). As the world celebrates the arrival of a precious bundle of joy, these mothers find themselves battling intrusive, distressing thoughts and compulsive behaviors that threaten to shatter the blissful facade of motherhood. In today's episode of The OCD Whisperer Podcast, we are delighted to have Conal Harpur. Conal is a psychotherapist specializing in anxiety disorders and OCD during the perinatal period. During our conversation with Conal, we discussed perinatal OCD symptoms, including intrusive thoughts related to the baby's well-being. Conal explains the thought process and distress experienced by individuals with OCD and emphasizes the importance of finding a therapist who understands OCD and the transition into parenthood. We also discuss different therapeutic approaches for OCD and the correlation between stressors and OCD symptoms. We conclude our conversation by touching on public vs. private practice and the importance of individual readiness for transformative growth. In This Episode [01:22] What is Perinatal OCD how is it different from OCD? [01:55] Symptoms of Perinatal OCD [05:25] Emotional avoidance in OCD [07:28] Understanding and managing OCD with a focus on specific obsessional topics. [08:03] The unpredictability of OCD and the importance of finding a therapist [09:03] CBT and medication as treatment options. [09:56] Analytic psychotherapy and understanding the sense of self. [14:04] The psychological and therapeutic perspective on perfectionism and its connection to OCD. [18:17] The correlation between stress and OCD symptoms [18:39] The overlap between OCD and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder [22:27] The importance of understanding childhood experiences in OCD treatment [25:50] The core emphasis of public practice: Symptom reduction and stress management. [26:49] The transformative journey vs. disorder treatment [27:37] The importance of being in the right emotional space and readiness for therapy, Notable Quotes [04:36] “ If I have an intrusive image about me approaching my baby or walking down the stairs and dropping my baby on the stairs is a very common one, I might be more inclined to not engage with my baby for fear that I may act on it.”- Conal [14:09] “An individual may develop kind of perfectionistic traits as a defense mechanism in psychoanalytic terms against the kind of reoccurring unacceptable impulses or thoughts they may have growing up.” - Conal [22:28] “Whenever there's a massive rise in responsibility, there's going to be a massive rise in intrusive images, and that's going to fuel the OCD.”- Conal Our Guest Conal Harpur, a seasoned mental health professional currently completing his doctorate in psychotherapy, specializes in anxiety disorders and OCD, particularly during the perinatal period. He manages the CBT department at a Dublin maternity hospital and runs a private practice for moderate to severe mental health issues, passionately improving lives through psychotherapy. To kick off series 7 we are joined by author, Patrick Harpur who is well known to many of us for his book, Daimonic Reality: A Field Guide to the Otherworld. I also highly recommend reading The Philosopher's Secret Fire: A History of the Imagination which heds a lot of light on the sorts of experiences we hear about on this show, along with his other non-fiction book, A Complete Guide to the Soul. Here we talk about Patrick's family's relationship with the Otherworld and whether an openness to their existence aids the potential for personal encounters. We ponder the eccentricity of our modern western culture in denying the existence of daimons and Patrick offers ideas about which gods may be ruling us at this time. I hope you enjoy this discussion. Let me know on Instagram and Twitter. ⭐️ In the bonus episode on Patreon⭐️ Patrick reveals his fascinating, childhood treasure-finding experience. Locating treasure is very much connected with beings from the fairy realm. It's a lovely share. In this episode, Charlie Harpur, head gardener of Knepp Castle's newly rewilded Walled Garden in Sussex, constructs his dream garden. Choosing the nostalgia and sense of exploration from the gardens of his childhood to the feeling of adventure that he found while working at Villa Boccanegra in Italy, he also admits to being a plant nerd about alpines, reveals how things are progressing at the experimental Knepp project and reflects on how gardening saved his life. An Auckland Michael Hill has finally closed its doors after multiple ram raid attacks. The Takapuna store's been boarded up since October and is now permanently closing after ten years in the suburb. Takapuna Business Association's Terence Harpur says it was hit about three times over two years. He's sad to see them go. "They just had a really great team, good community feel to it- I mean, they have given up their tenancy, but I'm really pleased another high-end store has quickly grabbed that high-end site." Joining me as my guest for this episode is author Patrick Harpur. Patrick has written extensively on a range of fortean subjects but is perhaps best known for his 1994 book Daimonic Reality: A Field Guide to the Otherworld. This applied the ideas of people such as William Blake, W.B Yeats and Carl Jung to examine the connections across a wide range of paranormal phenomena and explore the history of the realm many believe exists between the states of body and spirit. The book is regarded as classic of it's kind and a must have for the bookshelves of people interested in the sort of subjects It covers. In the interview I begin by talking with Patrick about the concept of daimonic reality and what that term describes. From there we discuss the book and how it came about and then move on to the daimons themselves, what they are, their interactions with humanity and how and why they manifest in our world the way they do. More information about Patrick and his writing can be found at http://www.harpur.org/patrick.htm. You can support the upkeep of Some Other Sphere with a donation via Ko-fi. These days “narcissist” has become the insult of choice for many of us caught on the wrong side of arrogance, self-absorption or monotonous bragging. Narcissism is more complex than that, however, and an empathetic understanding of it can make it much easier to deal with partners or family members with narcissistic traits, or with full-blown narcissistic personality disorder. This week clinical psychologist Dr Ruth Ann Harpur discusses with Andrew the origins of narcissism, the “Echo” phenomenon, and why partners of narcissists need to focus more on their own needs and sense of self. Dr Ruth Ann Harpur specialises in relationships and issues of narcissism. She qualified as a clinical psychologist in 2009 at the University of East Anglia, and also trained in cognitive behaviour therapy at the Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre and in schema therapy at the Dutch Institute for Schema Therapy. Joy is...When You Can't See It.After an early career characterised by hours at a computer, Charlie Harpur turned his back on desk work and embraced the physical elements of gardening. When not working as a Landscape Designer and Gardener, he is an impressive trail and ultra-runner who, in 2019, became the British 100km champion. His other achievements include finishing 3rd Brit at the CCC by UTMB and taking the win at Centurion Running's South Downs Way 100.Charlie epitomises the strength that comes through vulnerability, and I was humbled by how reflective and open he was in sharing about his complex journey with running and mental health, both past and present. We talked about building emotional armouries; the connectivity brought by natural neural networks; comparison culture and seeing the person behind the results; the lure of the great unknown; how plants and running can save your life, and why we would all benefit from stopping to hug the tree.Charlie and I chatted for a while after we finished recording and agreed that ideas around diversity in trail running that we touched on, in terms of life experience and body type, should not in any way detract from the need to continue advocating and addressing the issues that prevail with representation and inclusion in the sport. Charlie also dove further into his experiences with overtraining and underfueling, which led to hormonal imbalances and greatly impacted his physical and mental health, and the need for more conversations around this. We are hopefully going to schedule a follow up episode for him to share his story, as part of the process of starting those conversations. Follow: @charlie.harpur Hosted on Acast. On this week's episode of Bear Tracks, presented by Pink Whitney by New Amsterdam Vodka, we're joined by defenseman Chris Harpur, who joined the Solar Bears in mid-March as he began his professional career after wrapping up a five-year stretch at Niagara University. The defenseman talks about his Australian heritage on his mother's side, his relationship with his older brother (NHL defenseman Ben Harpur) and how he has juggled adapting from college hockey to the professional ranks while completing his graduate degree in sports management.
"I was taken off guard, then, when a Wiccan friend of mine looked at me with some degree of impatience one day and said, "For someone who obviously does not know anything about what Jesus really said or did, you sure do have an attitude problem about Christianity!" She was right. She was pointing out the difference between Jesus and Christianity; a wise thing to do. So, we decided to find a book for me that might provide some information, but not from a traditional or conservative perspective. Of course, if I' d but known, my own Unitarian Universalist churches could have provided an absolute treasure trove of exactly the kind of resources I was looking for, but it never occurred to me to ask. I never knew almost until I was considering seminary that the two denominations that merged to form UUism in 1961 were both founded on centuries-old liberal Christian heresies! I discovered those riches later, but the first book I ever read that explained Jesus from a respectful, historical and unorthodox perspective was For Christ' s Sake by Thomas Harpur. It was published by our own Beacon Press." "Harpur' s book changed my life by introducing me to the tenets of liberal Christianity, which I have tried to outline for you here: (1) Though we will never all agree about Jesus' relative divinity, we see in him a human exemplar, and we treasure his humanness. Those who called him "The Christ" were bestowing upon him an honorific, not claiming him to be co-equal with their God. "The Christ" means "the Anointed." It is an honorary title signifying special calling and blessing. Jesus never said he was God. I agree with Ralph Waldo Emerson and other Unitarian forebears that this orthodox understanding of Jesus is based on a misunderstanding of his message and a misreading of Scripture. When asked who he was he, actually, Jesus most often responded with another question, "Who do you say that I am?" He was a Wisdom teacher, a mystic, and a shaman. (2) Jesus was a prophet of love and inclusivity, of justice and healing. His reforms of Judaism were not an attempt to destroy Judaism but to critique it for being overly legalistic. He was a faithful Jew. He never claimed to find a new religion or to be anything but a faithful Jewish man with an ecstatically intimate relationship to the God of Israel. (3) Jesus preached an internal religion based on inner honesty and pure love. He wanted to encourage his people to move away from empty, outward forms of piety and observance, and more inward to a spiritual renewal based on the assurance that all human beings are equal and precious in God' s sight. Even them. They had trouble believing this because they were Jews living under imperial Rome and most were living in poverty, totally expendable people. They were all officially second-class citizens of the Roman Empire – (not even citizens!) – and among them there were the lowest of the low, the untouchables. Jesus made it a special point to accept and extend care and healing to those considered ritually unclean by Jewish and Roman purity laws. (4) We' ll never know what the first disciples saw after Jesus' s death in the events that are now commemorated at Easter. The point is whatever they experienced totally transformed their lives. It is not necessary to believe in a physical, miraculous Resurrection to be moved by this fact. (5) Finally, liberal Christianity is more interested in the religion of Jesus than the religion about Jesus." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support
