Lotty is a forward thinker in Emotional Culture, Change and Resilience, with over 20 years of experience leading and coaching people through large-scale change and transformation programmes.  During her journey as a senior leader, competitive runner and mum of 3 boys, Lotty discovered the power of Mindfulness and Emotional Intelligence to help her with various challenges, including an auto-immune condition, chronic pain, double hip replacement and corporate burnout. Through her experience, learning and research into the wisdom of emotions and mindfulness-based practices to attend to the ongoing challenges and constant change of working life, Lotty instantly saw an opportunity to integrate these teachings into approaching leadership, culture, resilience, burnout and change. Lotty founded MiND.U, where she is devoted to helping workplaces, leaders, and individuals build the capability, resilience, and ‘know-how' to mindfully lead and navigate today's ever-changing and dynamic environment. Lotty works with clients across New Zealand and internationally. She also runs retreats and public workshops and regularly speaks about Emotional Culture, Personal Resilience, and Mindful Change. She lives in Wellington with her husband and three sons. Lotty's story is one of transformation through self-awareness and intentional change. She advocates for therapy, emotional intelligence and mindfulness as essential tools for personal growth. In this episode: Lotty shares her journey through work, exercise, and addiction. Her reflections on self-doubt and imposter syndrome in helping others while facing personal struggles. Spending over 20 years in the corporate world, being a competitive runner, a mother, and briefly a fitness model. Driven by a need for achievement and external validation. Childhood & Early Influences Growing up in a volatile home with addiction, relationship conflicts, and illness. Learning from a young age to seek validation through achievement. Using exercise to control her appearance and emotions, leading to competitive running. Work & Achievement Addiction Excelling in corporate roles and rising through the ranks. How managing multiple roles: employee, athlete, mother—came at a high personal cost. Burnout (twice!) exacerbated by postpartum depression after her second child. Marriages & Personal Struggles Experiencing another marriage breakdown due to personal and professional pressures. Meeting her third husband, whom she considers her soulmate. Health Crisis & Turning Point Developing chronic pain and being diagnosed with autoimmune arthritis. Requiring a double hip replacement at 42—forced to slow down—and was a pivotal moment that allowed her to reflect and reassess her life choices. The Role of Mindfulness & Therapy Discovering mindfulness as a tool for managing both physical and emotional pain. Recognizing her addiction to busyness to numb emotions. Prioritising self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and values alignment. Leaving the Corporate World Realizing the corporate lifestyle was unsustainable for her health and well-being. Now integrates mindfulness and emotional awareness into her work. Addiction & Societal Conditioning Initially, she did not see her behaviours as addiction but saw the patterns later. Work, exercise, and people-pleasing are socially accepted but can be addictive. Society often rewards burnout culture, making it difficult to recognise the problem. Postscript: Kristin Neff and Chris Germer co-created the Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) program. They also co-founded the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion. Michele McDonald, a Vipassana teacher, originally developed the RAIN model—Recognize, Allow, Investigate, and Non-Identification. Tara Brach later popularised this model and adapted it by changing the final step from Non-Identification to Nurture, emphasising self-compassion. Award-winning storyteller in television, film, and literature, Matthew Weiner, is a recent graduate of the Hoffman Process. Matthew is the creator, executive producer, writer, and director of the television show, Mad Men. Matthew shares that his biggest fear in doing the Process was losing his creativity; if he healed his trauma, he'd no longer be creative. Now on the other side of the Process, Matthew knows his fear was unfounded because, through his deep work of transformation, he learned that making art is part of healing trauma. As a comedy writer, Matthew shares that often negative self-statements get a laugh. And yet, that inner negativity, including when it is pointed at ourselves, is, as Matthew says, "not sustainable." Releasing harmful negative patterns and the negative love we learned as children brings freedom and a lightness that is hard to imagine until you discover it within yourself. A particularly beautiful and wise reflection from Matthew comes when he speaks about childhood. He shares that, as children, we see ourselves as a "supporting player" in our parents' lives, not realizing that each of us is actually "the star" of our childhood. Toward the end, Matthew shares the importance of reflecting on his experience during the Process and after. Post-Process, people have told him he's different, his voice has changed and he's softer. Like many of our guests, Matthew sees value in this process of reflection through conversation on personal transformation. We know there is also great value in witnessing another's experience. We hope you enjoy this wise, reflective conversation with Matthew and Drew. More about Matthew Weiner: Matthew Weiner is a nine-time Emmy Award winner and five-time WGA Award-winning storyteller in television, film, and literature. Among his range of credits are two of television's most successful and critically lauded shows:  creator, executive producer, writer, and director on Mad Men, which was distinguished with the Peabody Award, and executive producer for The Sopranos. Weiner was also the creator, executive producer, writer, and director of the original contemporary anthology series, The Romanoffs, set in seven countries around the globe. Weiner's debut novel, Heather, The Totality, was published by Little, Brown and Company. You can discover more about Matthew Weiner here. As mentioned in this episode: Esopus Magazine article. Quote: “Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I don't have anything on paper despite years of constant rejection. In showbiz, all bad news has come through agents and in the form of phone calls. Even early on. I don't know that I would have saved them if I had gotten them. They're like bad reviews for me, best skimmed through and then briefly obsessed over before being mentally discarded. I've come to realize rejection is now part of my process. I am not used to it by any means, nor do I expect it, but it both sharpens my resolve that my ideas are new and also drives me to professionally outlive the resistance of the gatekeepers. If I wait patiently they will either move on, reconsider, or become brave enough to try something new. Rejection, as painful as it is, is nothing more than a delay.“ - Matthew Weiner Mindful Self-Compassion (Kristin Neff and Chris Germer) Listen to Kristen Neff on the Hoffman Podcast. This is a remarkable conversation with Blake Mycoskie, serial entrepreneur, philanthropist, and best-selling author. Blake graduated from the Hoffman Process in 2017. Before his Process, Blake had been a hard-driving athlete and a highly successful entrepreneur. He came to the Process because life had suddenly become more complex for him. He felt 'untethered' on the heels of a lot of recent life changes. Often old patterns make it hard to move with the change that comes, even when we've chosen those changes. Blake felt a lot of resistance at the beginning of his Process. He knew that he had achieved great success in the world and believed that his patterns had helped him get there. However, through the Process, with the guidance of his teacher, Blake eventually came to see that his patterns were keeping him from living a truly authentic life guided by his Spiritual Self. Since graduating, Blake has sent many friends to the Process, as well as hundreds of people he didn't know personally but supported financially to attend. As you'll discover, Blake vulnerably shares the truth of what he is experiencing in his life right now. He tells us that the Process was his jumping off place into spiritual work. After he graduated, he began to do many retreats and became active in the world of plant medicine. As you'll hear, Blake is in the immediate experience of a deeper call to go within. He refers to this moment in his life as a dark night of the soul. Blake knows something is here for him and he's determined to live following his Spiritual Self no matter where it takes him, despite how uncomfortable this is. We hope you enjoy this profound conversation with Blake and Sharon. Discover more about Blake Mycoskie: Blake Mycoskie is a serial entrepreneur, philanthropist, and best-selling author most known for founding TOMS Shoes and is the person behind the idea of One for One®, a business model that helps a person in need with every product purchased. A simple idea grew into a global movement:  While traveling in Argentina in 2006, Blake witnessed the hardships faced by children growing up without shoes. His solution to the problem was simple, yet revolutionary: to create a for-profit business that was sustainable and not reliant on donations. Blake's vision soon turned into the simple business idea that provided the powerful foundation for TOMS. Since its inception, TOMS Shoes has provided almost 96 million pairs of shoes to children around the globe. Blake's latest philanthropy passion has taken him into the world of psychedelics.   He's giving about 25% of his net worth to support research into the medical and mental health potential of psychedelic drugs. Self-compassion has many benefits, including: Increased happiness and well-being Reduced stress and anxiety Improved relationships Increased resilience Self-compassion is a lifelong journey. It is not something that we can achieve overnight. However, with practice, we can all learn to be more compassionate towards ourselves. Are you kinder to others than you are to yourself? Dr. Kristen Neff is a leading researcher on self-compassion. She shares with us the multitude of benefits of self-compassion and how to learn the skill of being kinder to ourselves - and turn your inner critic into an inner ally. Kristin Neff joins us from Austin, Texas. ___________________________ Bio Kristin Neff received her doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley, and is currently an Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. During Kristin's last year of graduate school she became interested in Buddhism and has been practicing meditation in the Insight Meditation tradition ever since. While doing her post-doctoral work she decided to conduct research on self-compassion – a central construct in Buddhist psychology and one that had not yet been examined empirically. Kristin is a pioneer in the field of self-compassion research, creating a scale to measure the construct almost 20 years ago. She has been recognized as one of the world's most influential research psychologists. In addition to writing numerous academic articles and book chapters on the topic, she is author of the book Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself, and her latest Fierce Self-Compassion: How Women Can Harness Kindness to Speak Up, Claim Their Power and Thrive. In conjunction with her colleague Dr. Chris Germer, she has developed an empirically supported training program called Mindful Self-Compassion, which is taught by thousands of teachers worldwide. They co-authored The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook as well as Teaching the Mindful Self-Compassion Program: A Guide for Professionals. She is also co-founder of the nonprofit Center for Mindful Self-Compassion. _____________________________ For More on Dr. Kristin Neff The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook: A Proven Way to Accept Yourself, Build Inner Strength, and Thrive Website The Mindful Self-Compassion Program (8 week course) Research Overview: Self-compassion: Theory, method, research, and intervention _____________________________ Podcast Episodes You May Like Chatter & Your Inner Voice – Ethan Kross Happier Hour – Cassie Holmes, PhD Retire Happy – Dr. Catherine Sanderson The Emotional Side of Retiring – Kate Schroeder _______________________________ Mentioned in This Podcast Episode New Study: Resilience and Enhancement in Sport, Exercise, & Training (RESET): A brief self-compassion intervention with NCAA student-athletes _______________________________ Wise Quotes On the Benefits of Self Compassion "The research is very, very clear. There are both mental and physical health benefits of self-compassion. So if you think of the word in Latin - compassion -  passion means suffering. It's how are we with our suffering? And if we aren't with it in a healthy way, in other words, if we dive into it or we become overwhelmed by it, we may develop depression or anxiety or sleep disorders, eating disorders, and then it also may start affecting our health. We might have a lot of cortisol, high blood pressure, and it can have these knock-on effects. So what happens with self-compassion is when we're struggling, we're hurting in some way. If we're there for ourselves, like we would be for a supportive friend, that means we're stronger and we're more able to deal with the tough stuff without being knocked over by it. And so it's linked to better mental health, not only fewer negative things like depression, anxiety, stress, but also positive mind states like happiness and optimism. And that's because if you think about it, kindness and connectedness, these are positive emotions. So we're kind of framing our difficulty. We aren't pretending it's not there, but we're just being kind and supportive ourself to ourselves in the midst of the difficulty. And these are positive emotions that help us cope.

Barbara Burke, beloved Hoffman teacher and coach, is committed to helping people reconnect to their authentic selves. Content warning: This conversation makes reference to self-harm, eating disorders, child sexual abuse, and contains explicit language, and may not be suitable for all audiences. Barbara took the Process in 1996. She credits her work at the Process as a major contributor to rediscovering her creativity. Also an author, multimedia artist, and educator, Barbara became a Hoffman teacher in 2007. She says, “My Process changed the trajectory of my life, and I feel so privileged to witness others on this journey of a lifetime.” As so often happens with graduates' Process journeys, the story of how Barbara came to Hoffman in the first place is a story of sibling love and care. How Barbara was able to do the Process is a story of a mother's love. Barbara's sister, Sally, did the Process first. Sally's healing led to Barbara's own Process journey and healing, which eventually became a family healing when multiple siblings and spouses found their way to the Process as well. Listen to this beautiful story of a family's healing that came through doing the powerful healing work of the Process. **Barbara's sister, Sally, has given her express permission to share her story here on the podcast. More about Barbara Burke: Barbara earned a BA and B-Ed from the University of Toronto. She taught for 29 years in the Toronto school system before becoming a Hoffman Process facilitator, initially for The Hoffman Institute Canada. In her lifelong pursuit of spiritual wholeness, Barbara has pursued a wide range of interests. Her experiences studying various modalities inform her current work. Her studies have included Dr. Helen Schucman's A Course in Miracles (Temecula, CA: Foundation for Inner Peace, 1976), mindfulness meditation, energy healing, and most profoundly her work with the Hoffman Institute. In addition to enjoying words, she appreciates the intrinsic healing power of color. She is the author and illustrator of I Am Divine, a boxed set of 52 beautifully illustrated cards. The accompanying book of meditations expands on the affirmations from the cards. I Am Divine is now available through the Apple iTunes Store as an app that will work on the iPhone, iTouch, and iPad. Barbara's also published an inspiring 12-month journal titled, "A Year of Living Your Divinity". This unique journal includes beautiful watercolor mandalas, prose, and poetry to support each person to connect more fully to their divine essence. Barbara's most recent creation is a set of children's I Am Divine Cards, which are now available for purchase. Each set contains 32 beautifully illustrated cards and an accompanying booklet with a meditation for each one. These cards are guaranteed to bring a sense of wonder, spirituality, and mindfulness into the lives of children. Barbara has created an app for the children's edition as well. Chris Germer, Ph.D. was terrified of public speaking and thought he had an anxiety disorder. He soon discovered, though, that what he had was a shame disorder. Through developing a self-compassion practice, Chris was able to heal his fear of public speaking and the shame that was behind it. While Chris' personal story is remarkable, what is even more so is what he came to learn about healing shame. He shares that healing our negative core beliefs (like we do in the work of the Process) heals shame because they are one and the same. Healing our relationship with love and with ourselves and others leads to self-compassion. By developing this practice of self-compassion, we can know again our natural joy and playfulness. As a renowned clinical psychologist specializing in self-compassion, Chris' work with self-compassion is well-aligned with the work done at the Hoffman Process. Prior to this conversation with Drew, he studied the research that has been done on the efficacy of the Process and the amazing results the Process brings about. Chris shares with us a bit about why the Process is so effective at healing what gets in the way of our relationship with love. More about Chris Germer: Chris Germer, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and lecturer on psychiatry (part-time) at Harvard Medical School.  He co-developed the Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) program with Kristin Neff in 2010. Together, they wrote two books, The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook and Teaching the Mindful Self-Compassion Program. MSC has been taught to over 250,000 people worldwide. Dr. Germer is also the author of The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion and a co-editor of two influential volumes on therapy, Mindfulness and Psychotherapy, and Wisdom and Compassion in Psychotherapy. He is a founding faculty member of the Center for Mindfulness and Compassion, at Harvard Medical School, and the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy, Cambridge MA. A leading researcher on self-compassion, Kristin Neff's work is closely aligned with the work of the Hoffman Process. In this engaging, inspiring, and educational conversation, Kristin shares her research, deep knowledge, and life experience with us to illuminate why self-compassion is such a powerful practice for human beings. Drew and Kristin speak to the understanding that what happens to us when we are young isn't our fault, but our healing is our responsibility. As Kristin shares, "...there's no other body/mind and particular point in time and space that's in the right position to take responsibility other than you." This succinctly and clearly sums up the practical reason why it is up to each of us to take responsibility for our own lives. Going deeper into Self-Compassion: Listen in as Kristin shares a powerful story about her son who is autistic. He was in a very emotional state while on an overseas flight with her. Through this story, Kristin explains how the neuroscience of emotional regulation helped her to help him regulate his emotional state. Kristin shares that compassion has three components: kindness, mindfulness, and humanity. "Compassion is grounded in a sense of shared humanity." At its core, compassion is the understanding that we are doing the best we can, moment to moment. That we are human beings. We are part of a much larger whole. Moment by moment, we are doing the best we can, learning and trying with care and love. If we learn this, things become much easier to deal with. Drew and Kristin then move into a discussion of how self-compassion supports us in the areas of global challenges such as climate change and social justice work. This is where Kristin begins to speak about the two aspects of compassion - tender compassion and fierce compassion. Fierce compassion is needed in all of us to help create a world that is just, safe, and supportive for all. In February of this year, I had the opportunity to interview, Dr. Chris Germer, a clinical psychologist and part-time lecturer on psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. As luck (or fate) would have it, I had the chance to interview him on the topic of shame…not once but TWICE. As you'll hear, the first time did not quite go as planned. However, the second time around (which you WILL hear in this episode) we talked about shame, what it is, what it does and what the antidote to it is. Chris' primary interest is his work related to self-compassion. Along with Dr. Kristin Neff (who I talked about in the What to Do When There's Nothing You Can Do episode a few weeks ago), he co-developed the Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) program and MSC has since been taught to over 200,000 people worldwide. Additionally, they co-authored two books on Mindful Self-Compassion, The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook and Teaching the Mindful Self-Compassion Program. In 2007, Chris began collaborating with Kristin Neff, psychology professor at the University of Texas, Austin, and pioneering researcher on self-compassion. In 2009, he wrote the book, The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion, and, in 2010, Chris and Kristin co-developed Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC), an empirically-supported, 8-week training program for the general public. The Center for Mindful Self-Compassion was established in 2012 and since then over 100,000 of people have learned MSC from over 3,000 teachers worldwide. A bestselling workbook on the MSC program appeared in 2018 and a professional textbook was released in 2019, both co-authored by Chris and Kristin. In 2015, Chris helped to establish the Center for Mindfulness and Compassion at the Cambridge Health Alliance. He is on the faculty and serves as a senior advisor and research consultant, currently co-developing an fMRI research protocol for treating chronic pain with self-compassion. Chris spends his professional life traveling internationally, teaching and writing about mindfulness and self-compassion, supporting MSC teachers and students, consulting on self-compassion research, and maintaining a modest psychotherapy practice. If it was you, would the conversation be the same? Or would you belittle yourself, fill with doubt, and feel angry? Turns out, self compassion is a skill most of us could use more of. Join us as today's guest explains how to foster this skill, and the benefits of being a little more patient and understanding of yourself.
