Send us a text“The essence of greatness is the perception that virtue is enough.” - Ralph Waldo EmersonYou ever feel like you're stuck between worlds?Too Asian for America, but too American for your Asian family?Like your face tells one story, but your heart is somewhere else entirely?I know that feeling. If you're part of the Asian diaspora — whether you grew up in NYC, Sydney, London, or somewhere in the Midwest — you've probably felt it too. Not quite at home in your skin. Not quite at peace with your place. But what if I told you that a Roman emperor from 2,000 years ago already understood this struggle — and had answers for it?In this episode, I share how Marcus Aurelius' Meditations — the personal journal of one of history's greatest philosopher-kings — offers timeless wisdom for the modern identity crisis. Especially for Asian diaspora youth navigating inherited trauma, cultural confusion, and feelings of not belonging.Marcus ruled an empire, buried children, endured plagues, and still chose humility, compassion, and self-discipline. And through it all, he came back to this:Live in accordance with Nature. Do your duty. Be good. Do good. That's enough. As members of the diaspora, we've inherited so much — the good, the bad, the beautiful, the broken. But we don't have to throw away our heritage to belong. We don't have to hide our pain to be strong. We get to shape our identity with purpose and virtue.Whether you're lost, angry, disconnected, or searching — this is for you.TL;DR - Delve into the rabbit hole of Stoic philosophy so it can change your life and help you reframe your Asian identity (struggle) in a positive meaningful way. The Compassion Initiative: Just Two Guys in Brisbane talking Compassion. www.thecompassioninitiative.com.au

In today's video, I'll explore how compassion might help with the day to day battles we find ourselves in with people who give us trouble, our so called enemies. In fact, we can think of it in this way. It's not really those who we already like or love, and love quite easily, that help us to practice our compassion. Obviously, we want to be compassionate towards our friends and loved ones too, but to really deepen and embed a compassionate motivation, it's the people who are difficult to like or difficult to love that offer us a chance to practice. Quantum Quote: “The obstacle is the way.” – Ryan Holiday 98% of American's daily trips measure less than 50 miles.  Do you know that plugging in an electric vehicle into a normal 120V socket overnight can provide 200 miles of range? This means that most of us can wipe out our gasoline consumption and eliminate 40% of our total carbon footprints simply by switching to an electric car.  But however you move around - people will still have accidents, either dying or getting injured on their way.  And so even a transition to electric vehicles will not by itself create safe travel. How do we get to safe, sustainable, and equitable mobility solutions in the near future, both for humans' sake and the environment? What are the best ways to clean up mobility and provide real solutions for a more sustainable future? Check out this week's AWESome EarthKind Energy podcast, where we interview Brandon Bartneck, the Director of FEV North America's New Business Development & Marketing sector. Brandon Bartneck aims to achieve his personal mission of developing a safer and more sustainable future through his work at FEV and his hosting of “The Future of Mobility” podcast. FEV is a leading global engineering service provider for sustainable energy and mobility solutions, supporting vehicle and propulsion system engineering in nearly all application segments. Brandon leads marketing activities in North America and helps drive the push into new application sectors and new technology areas. The Future of Mobility podcast he hosts is a weekly interview-style series highlighting the people and technology helping to develop and implement safe, sustainable, and equitable mobility solutions. His guests include leaders throughout the mobility sector. Brandon earned his Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan, and is now living in the metro-Detroit area with his wife, son, and dog.   Sign up for a free webclass to discover how easy is it to get ultra-efficient geothermal heating and cooling installed in your home – without the pain of emptying your savings account.  In “The Power Of Earth With Comfort” From Climate Master webclass, you'll discover the answers every homeowner needs to know, including: How geothermal heating and cooling can draw energy from the ground beneath our feet (for pennies) Why homeowners everywhere are making the switch The secrets to securing utility incentives and tax credits to pay for a large portion of your new geothermal system and much more…  If you are tired of rising energy costs and want to save up to 70% on your energy bills, Go to www.AWESomeEarthKind.com and register now for this FREE special event that will show you exactly how to get geothermal heating and cooling installed in your home.  We'd like to hear from you! When I had identified that spoken communication is a weak spot for me, and because I was so much into sales and marketing that I lost touch with technology and trends, the solution I came up with was starting this podcast which forced me to want to get better at speaking and dive in to these topics.” SuperNova #2. “Coming from an engineering background, it's not something that is commonly understood that you're talking to people who are in business positions and in decision-making positions, but even the potentially clearly black and white rational decisions are influenced by more than just what's on the paper.”  SuperNova #3. “When I was playing quarterback. More than just my role, my job is to be a leader and an athlete on the field, not just being a rigid kind of fill in the blocks. When I think about my role now in the space, I certainly have responsibilities in the business space and marketing space, but I need to have an awareness and understanding that first and foremost, I'm representing myself and the company as someone who is trying to make an impact in this industry.”  Worst Career Moment: “We lost the first big opportunity to a competitor. That was a great experience that forced me to reflect and figure out where within my role are the weak spots and where I could improve what I'm doing. That led to one year of a really intense reflective process.” – Brandon Bartneck  Best Advice He's Ever Received: “Be an athlete.” – Brandon Bartneck Personal Habit that Contributes to Success: “Reviewing and self-reflection; understanding what skills, attributes, perspective etc. required for a given situation scenario and trying to actively pursue and gain those skills.” – Brandon Bartneck Internet Resource: Seth Godin's blog at https://seths.blog/  Book Recommendation: Meditations by Marcus Aurelius at https://www.amazon.com/Meditations-Marcus-Aurelius/dp/1503280462  Magic Wand: “Change all the ways that we're moving people around, from your vehicle that's sitting outside to everything else that is transporting stuff and make it something that's not impacting the environment.” – Brandon Bartneck  WTF: “When I was living down in South Carolina, we had a hurricane come through which led to me leaving the town for what I call a hurrication up to the hills in South Carolina. I was able to spend some time hiking, watching football, etc. My wife, on the other hand, worked in a hospital as a nurse, so she was not able to leave with us and was in the hospital for 72 hours straight.” – Brandon Bartneck  Most Energized About Today: “I have a five-month old – my first child, and it really changes the perception of finding meaning in these problems. I think that really helps to energize and provide a level of purpose because I'm thinking now beyond my own life and beyond my own impact.” – Brandon Bartneck Next Step: “With FEV, I'm pretty excited that I have a global key account role, and I'm actually now transitioning and focusing on non-automotive sectors.” – Brandon Bartneck  Parting Advice: “If you're trying to make an impact on the environment, especially in the mobility space, I urge you to keep an open mind and perspective. Just because something has an engine, it doesn't mean that it's the worst thing possible.” – Brandon Bartneck       Connect:       LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brandonbartneck/       Podcast: http://brandonbartneck.com/futureofmobility/       Twitter: https://twitter.com/BrandonBartneck       YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1YaZr33Wt308vpwySOik1A/featured

We discuss some timeless wisdom from Roman Stoic (and Emperor!) Marcus Aurelius. Stoicism teaches us that our perception of the world is what determines how we feel, not the reality of the world itself. With that in mind, we cover ideas of striving vs. acceptance, active participation in life, a willing acceptance of 'fate', death, praise, goal setting, self-deception, values, truth, freedom, and the importance of working on one's character. This is one of Will's personal favourites. Hope you enjoy. Summary: In today's episodes of The Tragedy Academy, Jay welcomes actress and director Christine Twyman. Chrissy breaks down the concept of trauma and presents a method of healing by art. Christine advocates that through art, we can create a space for trauma intervention.Key Points: Advocating for trauma intervention via artWorking with people who are only interested in the monetaryUnderstanding traumaIntegrating with your traumaRecognizing that it's not our parent's faultMen are oppressing themselvesEpisode Highlights:[00:00:31] Introduction to Christine Twyman    [00:03:04] Jay introduces Christine's goal of advocating for trauma intervention via art. She describes this as a society, and there are several issues the prevent people from getting trauma intervention, and one way to receive these interventions is through art. Why? Because art is one of the few things that can connect everyone in some way.  [00:06:36] Christine admits filming is a strange medium to create in because it is one of the few spaces where business and politics interject. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to separate them.[00:08:19] Christine makes it known the intent for someone to make art solely for money does not bother her if only they allow her to do what needs to get done.[00:12:12] Christine and Jay give their interpretation of ego. Where ego is more of a persona and how people perceive things.[00:14:04] Christine portrays that we are all traumatized children and confesses that she has grown more as an actor by understanding other people as she learns about herself while she unpacks her life.[00:17:32] Christine confesses her love for writing, even more than acting. Writing is the most exciting thing to do; it releases parts inside of you didn't even know you had.[00:22:11] Christine brings up the topic of violence in mass manipulation. From a young age, both women and men are conditioned to fall into specific gender roles, and if they dare to venture outside of that, there will be repercussions.[00:24:45] Christine tells us the critical role of past traumas how the goal is not to forget about your past but to make amends with it. It's a matter of integrating, not removing. She also shares the many pieces of herself she's learned from unpacking her mental illness.[00:26:57] Christine recognizes that it's not our parents' fault for how they raised us. The generational gap is normal, and it is our duty to create a better world for future generations by bridging those gaps.  [00:31:19] Christine breaks down the types of violence in life; 1st violence is physical abuse, and 2nd violence is psychological and emotional. People do not usually quantify emotional violence as violence.[00:33:24] Jay details his life growing up in a disenfranchised area of the south, where people blamed their struggles on each other when they should be blaming the system. Christine labels this as crabs in a barrel.[00:36:00] Christine and Jay agree on the notion that men are oppressing themselves. Men learn that they are not allowed to feel what makes them human. Christine states that to oppress the female class, men have to believe that there's something wrong with them at all. [00:39:34] Christine and Jay discuss the animosity we create within ourselves and how to identify microaggressions, referencing White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo.[00:44:05] Jay gives an anecdote when he passed judgment on a friend who just had his tooth chipped.[00:46:20] Christine gives us a quick rundown of commedia dell'arte, aka SNL 1.0.[00:50:30] Christine and Jay agree on art being a part of evolution. It's a tale as old as time; it's something we need. It creates connections and serves as an outlet for the ego.[00:54:47] Christine and Jay reflect angry pieces of art and what it means to make something with which you disagree.  [01:01:44] OutroSources Mentioned:-     White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo Instagram | @outta_my _skin

What are their stories? He finds comfort because there's no way of knowing, yet we all feel the same thing.[33:11] Jordan feels we have unlimited potential as a species while describing himself as a teacher, healer, and student.[35:16] Jordan reveals that there is nothing else he would instead do than to help his fellow humans.[37:14] Jordan explains to us that to obtain the observer position, we must distance ourselves from the emotions we're feeling in our body at the moment to feel objectively and emphatically.  [38:06] Jordan recites his poem The Unseen Becomes the Seen[41:31] Jordan reveals to us the security he feels within himself, has no fear of anything that can happen, and reiterates the importance of being ready no matter what.[45:01] Jordan gives a simple first step to meditating; close your eyes, breathe deeply, and listen behind you.[45:45] Connect with JordanConnect with Jordan:Martial Arts and WellnessSanctuary of Art and HealingInstagram | @martialartsandwellnessSources Mentioned:-     A Life Unabridged by Bruce Lee

Written in Greek by the only Roman emperor who was also a philosopher, without any intention of publication, the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius offer a remarkable series of challenging spiritual reflections and exercises developed as the emperor struggled to understand himself and make sense of the universe. While the Meditations were composed to provide personal consolation and encouragement, Marcus Aurelius also created one of the greatest of all works of philosophy: a timeless collection that has been consulted and admired by statesmen, thinkers and readers throughout the centuries.

Happy almost new year! In today's episode, I'm taking a look back at the epic year of 2020 and all the twists, turns, failures, and achievements.  The first 10 minutes or so, I share a look back at the year that started with earning a “2 Comma Club” award at Funnel Hacking Live for earning more than one million dollars in one of our funnels. And then, spoiler alert, just a couple months later, our monthly recurring revenue was wiped out 80% during COVID shutdowns. I talk about the breakdown and rebuild of my agency as well as a lot of personal challenges and growth that happened throughout the year. “This was supposed to be a milestone year and one I worked hard for, but at the end of the day, none of the reward or success is owed to me. If I wanted to have something left, I knew I needed to let it go.” Then, I share 10 of the authors, podcasters, and resources that were invaluable to me and my business during 2020.  I hope some of these books, podcasts, resources, and strategies are helpful. If you find one that makes a positive impact for you in the new year, I'd love to know about it. Thanks for listening to today's episode. "We hear in Meditations Marcus Aurelius speak of “epithets for the self,” watchwords for his life. From Zeno to Marcus, the works of nearly every Stoic feature the repetition of four words, four virtues that go to the course of the philosophy: Courage. Justice. Moderation. Wisdom. "The cage can be made of gold, but it's still a cage."-J.I.R. This conversation is business heavy. We dive into burning bridges and how it affects the future. Dichotomy of decision making and idea triggers which can be complementary of each other. We then transition to 9/11/2001, which was a day that changed the United States's future, and it has been 16 years since the events that tragic day, we talk about some optimism of where we are today. Closing, we talk about a common, traditional value: treat others how you want to be treated. It's interesting to see how things go full circle. Questions of the Conversation: 1. Have you experienced/seen burned bridges in the workplace? 2. How has your decision making evolved? 3. Do you have a mode/medium that fires up your ideas/thinking for products, etc.? 4. What's been a favorable moment that has happened over the last 16 years? The questions were created or drawn from: Jocko Podcast 91 w/ Echo Charles: How to Win Back Authority.   Intro: Justin “Welcome to The Fitness Burden, I'm Justin Smiley with my Co-Host,” Brian “Brian Turek” Justin “On today's episode we are going to talk about self-empowerment” Body: Topic #1  What we can't control. The weather, traffic, other people and their actions or responses. Modern medicine preaches the opposite Genetic, environmental, hereditary, byproduct of circumstances. Topic #2  What can we control? For the most part, we control our sleep, food and drink consumption, physical activity, preventative maintenance, the people we surround ourselves with, and what we allow into our heads. As humans, I believe it is our God-given right to control our physical bodies.   “Invictus” I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.” Much of life is out of our control Focus on what we can control: attitude, our response. Viktor Frankl - Man's Search for Ultimate Meaning: Nazi Holocaust survivor Forced abortion of his first child, Mother, Father, Wife, and Brother are all murdered in Auschwitz extermination camp.   Attributes his survival to his focus on his own actions and responses than that of his captors. (Controlling what he can control) “Meditations” Marcus Aurelius: “. . . he who lives longest and he who will die soonest lose just the same.  For the present is the only thing of which a man can be deprived, if it is true that this is the only thing which he has, and that a man cannot lose something he does not already possess.” Topic #3  Small Victories lead to big victories, but you have to set yourself up for success.  Control what is within your control, and don't stress on the rest. Put yourself in situations and circumstances that will be most conducive to success. I know that I get a much better workout and I will push myself harder when I workout with other people.  This is one readon why CrossFit works so well. “Do not waste the remainder of your life in thoughts about others, for you lose the opportunity of doing something else when you have such thoughts. - Aurelius “A man then must stand erect, not be kept erect by others. - Aurelius Conclusion: - Justin “If you liked what you heard, please don't forget to go over to iTunes or Stitcher and give us a 5-star rating and share us on your social media of choice.” - Brian “And leave us some feedback and comments about what you liked and what you would like us to discuss on future episodes.”
