In this second podcast for Disability History month, and Triple Vision's 60th episode, host Hanna Leavitt speaks with Miguel Agayo of the Accessibility Hamilton Alliance about the book “The blind Mechanic”: The Amazing Story of Eric Davidson, Survivor of the 1917 Halifax Explosion”. Written by his daughter, Marilyn Davidson Elliott, the book is a biography of a pioneering Haligonian who defied all expectations to take up car mechanics. In 1917 Eric was two years old and playing in front of the window of his Halifax home when two ships collided leading to what at the time was the world's largest non-nuclear explosion. Approximately 2,000 individuals were killed, and 9,000 injured. Eric was one of 37 people who lost his vision that day. He went on to attend the Halifax School for the Blind, but unconventional, he defied all expectations of him becoming a washing machine repair man and followed his father and brothers into the field of car mechanics. He worked as a mechanic in Halifax, Toronto and Ottawa and lead the way in breaking the stereotype of what blind Canadians are capable of. Join Hanna and Miguel as they discuss the historical context of the Halifax explosion and the extraordinary life of Eric Davidson in this month's podcast."He continually took the engine apart, and put it back together again to create a mental map of what goes where. He also experimented by disconnecting a part, listening to the engine, feeling its vibration. … He would listen to find what made that noise, what made the vibration, what made that smell."
At 9:04 a.m., Halifax was torn apart in an instant. One moment it was a thriving wartime city, the next, it was fire, thunder, and ruin. A fireball as hot as the surface of the sun ignited the harbour. Shockwaves ripped through homes and streets. A wall of water followed, drowning what the flames had spared. In this second part of our two-part series, we return to the stories of Francis Mackey, Vincent Coleman, and Kaye Chapman as we explore the devastation that unfolded in the hours and days after the blast. Entire neighbourhoods vanished. Families were torn apart. The city would never be the same. The scars of the Halifax Explosion were not only etched into people, buildings, and the landscape. Something less tangible was also left behind. For over a century, ghost stories have circulated through the city, many tied directly to that morning. At St. Paul's, a shattered window still carries the outline of a figure who looked toward the harbour at the fatal moment. At the Five Fishermen Restaurant, once a morgue overwhelmed with the dead, staff still hear voices and see a bearded man vanish into thin air. These hauntings are part of Halifax's inheritance. The spirits of December 6, 1917 linger, a spectral imprint of a tragedy that reshaped the city forever. Step into the ruins, hear stories of survival, and of those that still linger. In 2013, a runaway train with no crew, no lights, and 72 tank cars of crude oil tore into Lac Mégantic, Quebec — triggering Canada's deadliest modern rail disaster. At 1:14 a.m. on July 6th, 2013, a silent, unmanned train derailed on a curve in Lac Mégantic. The resulting firestorm — fueled by six million liters of volatile Bakken crude — leveled the downtown, claimed 47 lives, and left a permanent scar on the town and rail safety history. In this An Ounce disaster case study, we break down the chain of mechanical failures, human decisions, and systemic weaknesses that led to the catastrophe — and the lessons still unlearned. If you think the systems we rely on are fail safe, this story might change your mind.Watch more stories like this on An Ounce:[Insert URL to related episode — recommend Halifax Explosion once both are in the same playlist]If you value clear, honest storytelling about real disasters and the lessons they leave behind, like this video, subscribe to the channel, and share it with someone who thinks “it can't happen here.”#AnOunce #LacMegantic #TrainDisaster #DisasterCaseStudy #RailSafety #CanadaHistory________________________________________Chapters (Timestamps) 00:00 – The Ghost Train00:51 – Set-Up02:01 – The Spark03:56 – The Ghost Train Rolls in05:39 – The Response06:40 – Outcomes: The Cost07:16 – Outcomes: Lessons Learned08:02 – What We Missed?09:10 – An Ounce09:40 – Firefighting Chaos________________________________________Authoritative References with URLs1. On a crisp December morning in 1917, Halifax woke to calm skies and the quiet hum of a wartime city at work. Children hurried to school. Workers streamed into factories. Families went about their routines. Out in the harbour, two ships moved slowly toward one another. One carried deadly cargo, volatile enough to erase a city. When they collided, a fuse was lit. At 9:04 a.m., Halifax was ripped apart in a wave of fire, force, and sound. In this first part of our two-part series, we walk alongside the people who lived those ordinary minutes before disaster: the harbour pilot steering a ship of fire, the dispatcher tapping out his last warning, and the young girl whose small choice meant survival. With Canada/US relations at their lowest point since we burned down their White House, we felt we should try generating some cross-border goodwill. We invited good friend of the show Josh Skaar (TalkSMAC podcast) to share in a bit of Canadiana as we take on Sean William Scott's GOON. Surprisingly our first hockey centered movie, GOON is largely a fun, competent comedy that we all liked. Of course, because we're a bunch of movie snobs, that doesn't stop us from beating up on this one a bunch. For our non-Canadian friends, here is a link to the Halifax Explosion we mentioned at the end of the episode. Once you're done listening, keep the conversation going on our Discord channel!

The Halifax Explosion of 1917 occurred on December 6 when the SS Mont-Blanc, a French cargo ship laden with explosives, collided with the Norwegian vessel SS Imo in the narrow harbor of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The collision caused a massive explosion that devastated the surrounding area, resulting in approximately 2,000 deaths and injuring around 9,000 people. The blast obliterated buildings, started fires, and triggered a tsunami, causing widespread destruction in Halifax and the neighboring community of Dartmouth. It was the largest man-made explosion prior to the development of nuclear weapons, leaving a lasting impact on the city. In this episode, Stacy and Daniel revisit some previous conversations and swap stories about unexpected basement floods and a wild weather emergency. First, Daniel offers an update about a special Kingston City Land Bank house and shares a podcast episode about the Halifax explosion. Next, Stacy talks about a basement flood caused by a clogged sewer line, while Daniel describes his experience with water in the basement due to a cistern. Then, Stacy details her experience with a (very real) recent tornado warning and her family's lack of emergency preparedness. Finally, Daniel shares a heartwarming story about a gift from a follower who passed away. This conversation highlights the challenges and surprises that come with owning and maintaining old houses. Maritime safety is very important. In this one, Liv and Ian talk about two ships that crashed in 1917 in Halifax. If that wasn't bad enough, one ship was carrying a boat load (word play) of explosives, all which detonated simultaneously. Halifax was almost completely wiped off the map by the explosion, as well as the subsequent tsunami. To add insult to injury, there was a blizzard the following day in Halifax. Also, Ian struggles to speak English. Liv is not an official Uber sponsor.

Episode 270: Having just set out from Quebec City the previous day, in the early hours of May 29, 1914, the passenger ship Empress of Ireland sank in the Saint Lawrence River near Rimouski, Quebec. She was on a return trip to Liverpool, England and due to heavy fog, the ship collided with the Norwegian collier SS Storstad. Just two years after the Titanic calamity in international waters off the coast of Nova Scotia came the deadliest shipwreck in Canadian history. The event was so significant it is number 11 on the list of deadliest all-time Canadian disasters, just behind number 10, the Halifax Explosion. The collision occurred when most of the 1,057 passengers and 420 crew members were fast asleep. The aftermath was devastating; the liner plummeted beneath the waters in less than a quarter of an hour, resulting in the tragic loss of more than 1,000 lives.
