With Canada/US relations at their lowest point since we burned down their White House, we felt we should try generating some cross-border goodwill. We invited good friend of the show Josh Skaar (TalkSMAC podcast) to share in a bit of Canadiana as we take on Sean William Scott's GOON. Surprisingly our first hockey centered movie, GOON is largely a fun, competent comedy that we all liked. Of course, because we're a bunch of movie snobs, that doesn't stop us from beating up on this one a bunch. For our non-Canadian friends, here is a link to the Halifax Explosion we mentioned at the end of the episode. Once you're done listening, keep the conversation going on our Discord channel!

The Halifax Explosion of 1917 occurred on December 6 when the SS Mont-Blanc, a French cargo ship laden with explosives, collided with the Norwegian vessel SS Imo in the narrow harbor of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The collision caused a massive explosion that devastated the surrounding area, resulting in approximately 2,000 deaths and injuring around 9,000 people. The blast obliterated buildings, started fires, and triggered a tsunami, causing widespread destruction in Halifax and the neighboring community of Dartmouth. It was the largest man-made explosion prior to the development of nuclear weapons, leaving a lasting impact on the city. This episode of BOOKSPO is guaranteed to put a song in your head, as Michelle Hébert tells me all about how revisiting Emma Donoghue's 1997 story collection KISSING THE WITCH helped her discover solutions to problems she was facing in developing the characters in EVERYTHING LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC, her debut novel, which is out this week and pretty magic in its own right. Hébert tells me about the serendipitous way in which she's managed to build her own fairy tale library, about what Donoghue's twists on familiar tales showed her about understanding difficult characters' motivations, about how female characters are so often adversarial and she wanted to do something different, the leap she took to couple her story of age-old curses and fairy tale tropes with a brilliant 1980s' pop and rock soundtrack, about how maybe ‘80s pop culture and the world of fairy tales are not so incongruous after all, and names the most bonkers ‘80s song of all time, which turns up on her novel's soundtrack. About EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC: Kitten Love's family is haunted by the memory of her teenaged aunt, Nerida, who died just days before Kitten's birth in 1970. Her mother, Queena, believes the family is cursed, and she's determined not to let disaster strike again. She won't let Kitten out of her sight—especially to visit the beaches that surround the town. She's built a bomb shelter to protect against Soviet attack, and she's desperate to protect her husband, Stubby, from the fatal and mysterious Love Heart.Kitten thinks she knows how to defeat their curse: magic. But when protection spells and clues from tarot cards aren't enough to save Stubby, Kitten turns her back on the things that make her life magical, and Queena turns her back on reality. She preserves everything as it was the day Stubby died in 1987—from the gold shag rug in the bathroom to the Duran Duran posters in Kitten's room. Kitten, herself, is forbidden to change.Kitten tastes freedom when she falls in love and moves to British Columbia, but reinventing herself without the curse is harder than she expects. Tragedy and her own reliance on magical thinking eventually lead her back home to Queena, her brother Thom, and Aunt Bunny, who are equally stuck in their pasts. When tarot cards begin mysteriously showing up in her room, warning of a betrayal and encouraging an unlikely romance, she's certain someone is watching her. Could the heartbreak that almost destroyed Kitten's family be the very thing that helps them move on?A darkly humorous family saga woven around tarot cards and a mixtape of '80s songs, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic is a heady mix of music, ghosts, love, and nostalgia.Michelle Hébert grew up on the beaches and marshes of Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. She has an MFA in Creative Nonfiction, degrees in journalism and social work, and she studies tarot on the side. Her writing about mental health, social justice, and finding joy where it seems there's none to be had has appeared in Writerly magazine and in audio essays and short documentaries for CBC Radio. Her first book, Enriched by Catastrophe: Social Work and Social Conflict After the Halifax Explosion, was published in 2009. Michelle has lived across Canada but makes her home in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Mi'kma'ki), with several cats, a dog, and her two adult children. Maritime safety is very important. In this one, Liv and Ian talk about two ships that crashed in 1917 in Halifax. If that wasn't bad enough, one ship was carrying a boat load (word play) of explosives, all which detonated simultaneously. Halifax was almost completely wiped off the map by the explosion, as well as the subsequent tsunami. To add insult to injury, there was a blizzard the following day in Halifax. Also, Ian struggles to speak English. Liv is not an official Uber sponsor.

In part 2 we conclude our coverage of the devastating explosion which destroyed Halifax, Nova Scotia in December 1917. We examine the heroic acts of survivors, why the military presence was crucial in the aftermath, and how the city coped with the growing number of dead. Also discussed are the tremendous impact of Dr. Clement Ligoure, Dr. George Cox among others, and why Bostonians and Haligonians love each other a wicked lot.
On 6. December 1917, the busy WWI port of Halifax, Nova Scotia was devastated by the largest man made explosion the world had ever seen. We discuss the devastation and heroism in the aftermath of this tragedy.

Episode 270: Having just set out from Quebec City the previous day, in the early hours of May 29, 1914, the passenger ship Empress of Ireland sank in the Saint Lawrence River near Rimouski, Quebec. She was on a return trip to Liverpool, England and due to heavy fog, the ship collided with the Norwegian collier SS Storstad. Just two years after the Titanic calamity in international waters off the coast of Nova Scotia came the deadliest shipwreck in Canadian history. The event was so significant it is number 11 on the list of deadliest all-time Canadian disasters, just behind number 10, the Halifax Explosion. The collision occurred when most of the 1,057 passengers and 420 crew members were fast asleep. The aftermath was devastating; the liner plummeted beneath the waters in less than a quarter of an hour, resulting in the tragic loss of more than 1,000 lives. Also, for the past 50 years the province of Nova Scotia has gifted the tree to the people of Boston as a thank you for aiding them after the Halifax Explosion in 1917. We'll hear from the truck driver who's hauling the tree. And big events make an impact on the spot market – some natural, some man-made. We've got both this week. Robert Rouse of DAT fills us in on how both are affecting the market. 0:00 – Newscast. 10:05 – A tree and a gift. 24:29 – Big events and the spot market. 39:23 – Unique electronic identifiers.
Hear how elementary school children celebrated the life and legacy of Sara Corning, a remarkable nurse who tended to the injured in the Halifax Explosion and rescued children during the Armenian genocide in 1922. Our Yarmouth Community Contact David Sollows brings us the story.
HELLO! We're here, and we're ready to chat! Taylor starts us off with the story of Ada Blackjack, a woman who survived two years on an arctic island, and Emily surprises us with what we're calling The Halifax Explosion 2: The Squeaquel. Grab a home-made jell-o shot, or something equally dangerous, and join us!
*Apologies for the very slight echo you might hear at certain points, we've done our best to minimize it.* HALLO! We're here! It's ep 105, and Taylor's kicking it off with the tale of the Halifax Explosion, a Canadian national tragedy and a truly crazy story. Emily somehow gets the clap over the harp noise, but stays strong with the story of brothers Lucas and Christopher Leonard, who suffered abuse at the hands of the Word of Life Christian Church.

Tufts Cove is a shallow, innocuous little inlet nestled at the back end of Halifax Harbour on the Dartmouth side between a power station and the abandoned military neighbourhood of Shannon Park. Because of its proximity to the 56-year-old generating plant and what was once housing for Cold War-era sailors and their families, the cove is fenced off, blocking access to both the water and land. No one ever goes there, anyway; they have no reason to..
Today Halifax is a beautiful city but its history is anything but easy. It is the sight for 2 major tragedies but even after all that hardship the city was able to rebuild and move on into what it is today. The history will explain why this city is one of the most haunted in all of Canada.
On a quiet December morning in 1917, a Norwegian passenger ship was speeding through the Narrows, just outside Nova Scotia's Halifax Harbor, when it collided with a French freighter packed full of TNT, guncotton, and fuel. The resulting explosion flattened most of the harbor-facing district of Halifax, caused a tsunami and a fire, and killed or injured upwards of ten thousand people. On this episode, we're looking at the causes of the accident and explosion, the heroism of the railway workers and firefighters who averted even greater loss of life, the loss of the Mi'kmaq settlement of Turtle Grove and the Black community of Africville, the blizzard that nearly derailed early rescue efforts, and the almost-unimaginable damage to Dartmouth and Richmond neighborhoods. We're also taking a look at the incredible rescue effort put forth by Canadian and American healthcare workers and emergency services, and the story behind the legacy Christmas tree that Nova Scotia continues to send to Boston every holiday season. All Zombies are Zombies, especially Resident Evil 4 Zombies! It is just beginning to be Spooky Season so my wonderful Guest Haley MacLean (CoHost of Game and Make Up as well as all around rad person) discusses Zombies and the proper definition of them briefly with me before we go on a very long but still not long enough journey through the Legalities of Video Game Mechanic Patents. The difference between Patents and Copyright, and listen to me learn what a POSITA is in real time! There is so many layers to this very specific topic and Haley walks me through all of it patiently as I try to grasp all the concepts. We speak briefly about the Casting decisions behind the upcoming Mario movie and I learn the sad story behind the Halifax Explosion of 1917. Overall, many things were discussed and it's always a joy to watch some one get carried away in their passions, so join me and get swept up in this week's Episode.
