Click here for the Utah Dept. of Culture & Community Engagement version of this Speak Your Piece episode which includes topics discussed in time, photos of guest speakers and additional resources and readings.Podcast Content:  Former Utah State University (USU) grad student Emma Jones and USU Assistant Professor of Environment and Society Dr. Mariya Shcheglovitova, shares the history and science related to the Home Owners' Loan Corporations' (HOLC) “redlining" of Salt Lake City; and their investigations of spatial distribution of environmental hazards contained in both the city's original west side (Pioneer Park neighborhood) and in expanded west side communities (Poplar Grove, West Pointe, Rose Park, Glendale, South Salt Lake, etc.), where most of Salt Lake City's communities of color reside. This podcast is all about how examining the past (history) along with geographical and public health data (science) can help a community like Salt Lake City see evidence concerning contemporary health and social problems, how such evidence can play a part in solving these problems, and point municipal and community leaders towards better city and development practices. “Scholars have found that race is the most significant predictor of environmental pollution exposure…Crowder and Downey (2010) [and they have] found that Black and Latinx households experience higher levels of proximate industrial pollution compared to White households.” This is an excerpt from Emma Jones' capstone project. Jones and Shcheglovitova anticipate their research to be used in further investigations regarding spatial patterns and terrestrial pollution in SLC. Their research connects the study of spatial distribution of terrestrial pollution to both historic and present-day planning practices which they believe perpetuate housing segregation and disinvestment in communities of color. Bottom line: Jones and Shcheglovitova documents the existence of environmental racism in SLC. Their identification of spatial patterns led them to create an interactive map accessible in Salt Lake West Side Stories -- post 35 (see within a link to Jones' complete paper).Bio: Emma Nathel Jones has a Bachelors of Science in Conservation and Restoration Ecology with an emphasis in GIS and a minor in Landscape Architecture. During their time at Utah State they worked on a variety of research projects concerning sustainable energy development and sustainable agriculture as a part of the Undergraduate Research Fellowship. They are currently pursuing a Masters in City and Metropolitan Planning at the University of Utah.  Bio: Dr. Mariya Shcheglovitova is a human geographer with interests that span environmental and social justice, urban political ecology, cultural geography, and environmental history. She completed her PhD at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County where she worked on a project investigating present-day and historic intersections of street tree planting programs, waste management, and housing segregation. Do you have a question or comment, or a proposed guest for “Speak Your Piece?” Write us at “ask a historian” – askahistorian@utah.gov

It's a surprise to no one that the most common conversations in aviation, center on people and planes.  And why not... it makes for great hangar flying.  This week, Al and Marc were reminded of another very important aspect of aviation... The Airport.  We're not talking about the runways, but how the airport serves as a hub for bringing people and planes together.  Airports have personalities that are born out of the stories and the people who make them happen.  This week, the SimpleFlight crew visited a shining example of the perfection that happens when it all comes together. Poplar Grove Airport (C77) is a very special place.  It's not because of chance, but rather the owners of the airport, Steve and Tina Thomas, designed it that way.  They built a culture years ago, which they protect, strengthen, and live  7 x 24 x 365.  After a tour of the field, which was too short for their liking, the guys had a chance to sit down with Steve and Tina and talk about how they make the magic happen.   When you listen to this week's show, you may hear about a flight school, a maintenance shop, a museum, and an air-park, but what you'll feel and think about is the history, the passion, and a very special community.  You can read about Poplar Grove on their website:(www.poplargroveairmotive.com), but if you ever in the Midwest, drop by C77 and say hi to Steve and Tina (and the dogs).  You may never want to leave. As always, we love hearing from you and ask you share your ideas with the entire SimpleFlight Facebook and Instagram community  @simpleflightradio Thanks for being a part of the SimpleFlight Family!!!

The Anglo-Boer war, embarked upon by both sides with confidence, was now to be maintained by faith and we shall see how that faith was expressed, and by whom .. and what became of it. One of these men of faith was Transvaal President, Oom Paul Kruger. Although well into his 70s by this time, he found the energy to climb aboard a rattling Boer train and to travel to both war fronts - in Natal and in the Free State. When he arrived in Natal he found the Boers in full flight. Buller had successfully relieved Ladysmith and the burghers wanted to leave for home. Kruger found General Joubert sick with illness and defeat and tried to stop what had turned into a stampede. He entreated and exhorted, and promised that he would suggest arbitration to end the war as long as the men stood firm. Many had decided that it was huis toe or time to go home and had retreated as far north as Newcastle from Ladysmith before they were persuaded to return to fight. But when Kruger travelled to the front in the Orange Free State at Poplar Grove, Lord Roberts who led the British force had ordered an attack on the Grove on the same day Kruger arrived - March 7th 1900. Would Kruger escape?
