GOSPEL POWER l AUGUST 11, 2021 19th Week in Ordinary Time Gospel: Mt 18:15-20 Jesus said, 15“If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. 16But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 17If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. 18Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. 20For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” Today's Gospel attests that we are being sanctified and saved not as isolated individuals, but in our connectedness with one another. The context for living our faith is the community, where we help one another to respond to God's call. The word “church” in Greek — ekklesia — refers to those who are “called out” and “assembled.” The Lord Jesus' presence is promised to those who connect with one another and gather together in his name, and the efficacy of their united prayer is assured. Stewardship of one another is carried out through fraternal correction, which is an act of mutual charity. Our connectedness reflects, no matter how dimly, the inner life of God, which is perfect communion of three divine persons. Lord, help us to understand that being “Church” means being connected with the other believers and responding to your call as a community. Amen

Episode Description: Understanding and deploying our spiritual gifts is so central to the lives of Christians, that we cannot help our loved ones become all God wants them to be in Christ, without understanding what Paul teaches about spiritual gifts. Despite controversies about some spiritual gifts, all Christians agree that the seven gifts identified in Romans 12 are still being given by God to believers today. This episode begins a series, Helping Our Loved Ones Flourish Using Their Spiritual Gifts. For Further Prayerful Thought Which of the seven gifts from Romans 12 do you think might be yours?Christ is so awesome and so perfectly balances seemingly contradictory virtues, like justice and mercy, hatred of sin, but love for sinners--why does it make sense that it might take seven different gifts for the Body of Christ to accurately function like him and portray him?Can you think of examples of Christians disagreeing because they have different spiritual gifts?Past Podcast Highlight Kids Don't Have  It In Them to  Grow Themselves Up   S1 E #36 7/5/20For the printed version of this message  click here. For a summary of topics addressed by other podcast series, click here. For FREE downloadable studies on men's issues, click here.

Episode Summary: Jesus summarized our mission, Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness. Pursuing Christ's kingship in my life begins in my own heart with my personal love and loyalty to Christ. We are first called TO Christ to enjoy a love relationship with him. This part of our mission is consistent with the great commandment to love God with all my heart and the first commandment to have no other God's before him. Today's episode zooms in to examine one specific aspect of Christ's character—the way he gave up the right to be treated with the dignity, the honor, the nobility, he deserved—as the God of the universe. Instead, he emptied himself of his prerogatives as God's equal to take the form of a slave to serve us. The more we see this shocking willingness to give up his divine rights, entrusting himself to the Father, the more we will be empowered to exhibit this same kingdom virtue, showing Jesus to those around us.For Further Prayerful Thought What is most moving to you about God the Song stripping himself of his dignity to love us?Where does selfish anger crop up in your life, reflecting that the rights you once put on the alter have crawled off?Is there anywhere that worry, indicate that you still haven't transferred the ownership of some aspect of your life to God, or need to put it back on the altar? Disciple Up # 217 Should We All Be Iconoclasts? By Louie Marsh, 6-30-2021     icon·o·clast | ī-ˈkä-nə-ˌklast  Definition of iconoclast 1: a person who attacks settled beliefs or institutions 2: a person who destroys religious images or opposes their veneration   Synonyms: bohemian, boho, counterculturist, deviant, enfant terrible, free spirit, heretic, individualist, lone ranger, lone wolf, loner, maverick, nonconformer, nonconformist   Antonyms: conformer, conformist   For the Meaning of Iconoclast, Break It Down   Iconoclast is a word that often shows up on vocabulary lists and College Board tests. How will you remember the meaning of this vocabulary-boosting term? If you already know the word icon, you're halfway there. An icon is a picture that represents something. The most common icons today are those little images on our computers and smartphones that represent a program or function, but in the still-recent past, the most common icons were religious images. Icon comes from the Greek eikōn, which is from eikenai, meaning "to resemble." Iconoclast comes to us by way of Medieval Latin from Middle Greek eikonoklastēs, which joins eikōn with a form of the word klan, meaning "to break." Iconoclast literally means "image destroyer."   First Known Use of iconoclast in English 1641, as an icon destroyer.   Article on this: https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/neil-seeman/iconoclast-genius_b_4116396.html   https://www.christianitytoday.com/history/issues/issue-88/great-iconoclast.html   Joy asked Lewis to autograph her copy of his book, The Great Divorce. He wrote, "There are three images in my mind which I must continually forsake and replace by better ones: the false image of God, the false image of my neighbours, and the false image of myself. C. S. Lewis 30 December 1952 (from an unwritten chapter on Iconoclasm)."   Lewis was saying that spiritual growth is iconoclastic because it constantly breaks our idols and replaces them with something better.   Iconoclast in Church History:   https://www.catholic.com/encyclopedia/iconoclasm   Iconoclasm (Eikonoklasmos, “Image-breaking”) is the name of the heresy that in the eighth and ninth centuries disturbed the peace of the Eastern Church, caused the last of the many breaches with Rome that prepared the way for the schism of Photius, and was echoed on a smaller scale in the Frankish kingdom in the West. The story in the East is divided into two separate persecutions of the Catholics, at the end of each of which stands the figure of an image-worshipping Empress (Irene and Theodora).   Luther & the Iconoclasts: https://lutheranreformation.org/history/luther-and-the-iconoclasts/   Was Jesus an Iconoclast?   “13The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. 15And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father's house a house of trade.” 17His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” 18So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” 19Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” 21But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 22When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.” (John 2:13–22, ESV)   “1On a Sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. 2But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” 3And Jesus answered them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4how he entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?” 5And he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”” (Luke 6:1–5, ESV)   What About the apostles?   “9For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God,” (1 Thessalonians 1:9, ESV)   “16Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols. 17So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there. 18Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said, “What does this babbler wish to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities”—because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection. 19And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? 20For you bring some strange things to our ears. We wish to know therefore what these things mean.” 21Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new. 22So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. 23For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘To the unknown god.' What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. 24The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, 25nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.” (Acts 17:16–25, ESV)   “15We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; 16yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. 17But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! 18For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. 19For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. 20I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.” (Galatians 2:15–21, ESV)   What happens when you tear something down without a plan to replace with something better?   What needs to be smashed today?   What are the idols (icons) in the church today that to be challenged and removed? Remember I'm speaking largely metaphorically, not about physical idols.   Some say the denominations, like the Southern Baptists for example, need to deal with issues of racism in their history more and are even introducing parts of Critical Race Theory to do so?   Is it even possible to follow Jesus and not be an iconoclast to one degree or another?   What idols in our culture need confronting?   CRT? PC speech and action codes? Gender issues? Sexual morality in general?

Episode Summary: One of the best insights I learned as a dad, was the difference between authority and leadership. Authority coerces obedience through punishment or the threat of punishment. Leadership is the influence in a child' life that makes him WANT to obey our requirements and God's Word. As we saw last week, BOTH are needed. Compassionate discipline is required to enable young children to internalize the truths that they cannot always have their way, the world does not revolve around them, and they must learn to “say no” to their impulses. But leadership, especially when kids are older, goes beyond the authoritative use of consequences. It makes kids want to follow the example of their dad. This episode examines how to love our kids well, building our love relationship with them, which also increases our influence in their lives. For Further Prayerful Thought 1. Why does it make sense to you that a person's influence in another person/s life depends on the quality of his relationship with that other person?2. What stood out to you about how to be a welcoming father?3. Do you agree that part of fatherhood is taking the initiative to build your love relationship with each of your children? Disciple Up # 212 I'm a Christian NOT a Victim! By Louie Marsh, 5-26-2021   Intro. Picking up were yesterday's sermon ends, the URL for it is below.   https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/christschurchontheriver/06_The_Gospel_of_John_1-7_Do_I_Want_to_Get_Well.mp3   I'm going to do some recapping of the early parts and then get into the main point here.   1) Do I REALLY WANT to get well?   5  One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6  When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?" John 5:5-6 (NIV)   This may be the most profound question in the entire Bible. If it's not then it's certainly one of the most important and profound.   It seems like such a silly question to ask. Surely a man who had been disabled for that many years would love to be healed.   But the truth is, that many of us grow so accustomed to being sick or needy and the attention that it brings them that I'm not really sure that they want things to be any different.   Christ's question to all of us this morning is “Do you want to get well?”   Some of us here today face serious physical illness. But many of us are not physically ill but have allowed other things to ruin our lives. Whether that's alcohol abuse, drug abuse, sexual sin, pornography, greed, people pleasing, fear, etc. We all have to answer this question – Do I really want to get well, or have I become comfortable in my dysfunction and sin?   I have to move beyond just wanting the pain and discomfort to end. What Jesus wants to know is do I want to be well? Do I want to start down the road to becoming like Christ, the real road to recovery.   Is THAT what I want? Or do I just want a little relief from my pain?   2) SOME SIGNS I'M NOT SERIOUS ABOUT GETTING WELL.   I practice BLAME SHIFTING   7  The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” John 5:7 (ESV)   12  The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13  Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” Genesis 3:12-13 (ESV)   I make EXCUSES.   I have NO TALENT OR ABILITY.   But Moses pleaded with the LORD, "O Lord, I'm just not a good speaker. I never have been, and I'm not now, even after you have spoken to me. I'm clumsy with words." Exodus 4:10 (NLT)   It's TO HARD/DON'T KNOW HOW.   6  Then I said, “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth.” Jeremiah 1:6 (ESV)   I'm too BUSY.   21  Another of the disciples said to him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” Matthew 8:21 (ESV)   I use the GOD DODGE.   12  And the angel of the LORD appeared to him and said to him, “The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor.” 13  And Gideon said to him, “Please, sir, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?' But now the LORD has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.” Judges 6:12-13 (ESV)   I play the VICTIM  (FEEL SORRY FOR MYSELF.)   2  And he prayed to the LORD and said, “O LORD, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster. 3  Therefore now, O LORD, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.” Jonah 4:2-3 (ESV)   Thinking Biblically about suffering, rejection and all kinds of pain will require a major shift in our perspective.   “38So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; 39but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!” So they took his advice, 40and when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name. 42And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus.” (Acts 5:38–42, ESV)   “18For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.” (Romans 8:18–25, ESV)   “7But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. 8We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 11For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12So death is at work in us, but life in you.   16So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:7–12, 16-18, ESV)   “21For to THIS you have been called, because Christ also SUFFERED for you, leaving you an example, so that you might FOLLOW IN HIS STEPS. 22He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.” (1 Peter 2:21–25, ESV)   “31What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:31–39, ESV)

A Study in 2nd Corinthians23—ConsolationConsolation means this: “The comfort received by a person after a loss or disappointment.” 2 Corinthians 7:13 (NLT) 13We have been greatly encouraged by this. In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus was about the way all of you welcomed him and set his mind at ease.Paul, Titus and the Church people at Corinth were all encouraged when the instructions they gave were obeyed.  The true repentance was on full display by changed lives. If they had NOT repented and put away the evil, the consequences to them would have been deep distress.  But instead, they were now blessed and happy. We should be comforted by one another's comforts and hurt by one another's sorrows and grief.2 Corinthians 7:14 (NLT) 14I had told him how proud I was of you—and you didn't disappoint me. I have always told you the truth, and now my boasting to Titus has also proved true!Paul had spoken before of their faults and he speaks true of their good qualities as well.2 Corinthians 7:15 (NLT) 15Now he cares for you more than ever when he remembers the way all of you obeyed him and welcomed him with such fear and deep respect.2 Corinthians 6:12 (NLT) 12There is no lack of love on our part, but you have withheld your love from us.2 Corinthians 7:12 (NLT) 12My purpose, then, was not to write about who did the wrong or who was wronged. I wrote to you so that in the sight of God you could see for yourselves how loyal you are to us.The Church received Titus with great humility, admiration and respect as a minister of the Gospel and one sent by the apostle to them.2 Corinthians 7:11 (NLT) 11Just see what this godly sorrow produced in you! Such earnestness, such concern to clear yourselves, such indignation, such alarm, such longing to see me, such zeal, and such a readiness to punish wrong. You showed that you have done everything necessary to make things right.2 Corinthians 7:16 (NLT) 16I am very happy now because I have complete confidence in you.Paul now knows that this Church as a whole has matured to the place where he has plenty of proof that they're willing to obey God and set aside everything that is offensive to the Lord. Whenever there is a misunderstanding between people, the best remedy is a direct and open request for an explanation.Matthew 18:15-20 (NLT) 15“If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the offense. If the other person listens and confesses it, you have won that person back. 16But if you are unsuccessful, take one or two others with you and go back again, so that everything you say may be confirmed by two or three witnesses. 17If the person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church. Then if he or she won't accept the church's decision, treat that person as a pagan or a corrupt tax collector. 18“I tell you the truth, whatever you forbid£ on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven. 19“I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. 20For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.”

The Authority of the Son 19So Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. 21For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. 22For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 25Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.27And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

John 3:121 (ESV) You Must Be Born Again 3Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him. 3Jesus answered him, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4Nicodemus said to him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mothers womb and be born? 5Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7Do not marvel that I said to you, You must be born again. 8The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. 9Nicodemus said to him, How can these things be? 10Jesus answered him, Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? 11Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. 12If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God So Loved the World 16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.

The Food and Drink Manufacturing Sector: Immediate Needs for an Automated and Digitised Future?Panel:Chair: Helen Munday, Chief Scientific Officer, FDFBen Ramsden, Partnership Manager - Food & Drink, Digital CatapultKeith Thornhill, Head of Food and Beverage UK and Ireland, Siemens Digital IndustriesMike Wilson, Chief Automation Officer, MTCIn 2020, interest in automation and digitisation has peaked in the sector, as a result of the COVID-19 crisis and the upcoming changes that will come from the UK's final exit from the EU. The current climate has also shed light on the need to address weaknesses in the supply chain. Despite the fact that the sector responded well to the unexpected challenges, many businesses worry about how future shocks might affect them. The obvious answer seems to be the application of technology to achieve agile manufacturing systems and supply chains. But is the food and drink manufacturing sector ready for this shift? What are the more immediate on-site technical needs that the sector will need to fulfil? What challenges will the sector face in meeting these requirements?Currently, the UK manufacturing sector ranks 22nd worldwide for robot units installed per 10,000 employees (85 units) and the food and drink sector is one of the least automated manufacturing sectors across the world (Source IFR). Our panellists will discuss the on-site technical requirements that will need to be met for the sector to be able to integrate into a digital supply chain, as well as how to build capabilities to address the immediate threat to labour shortages.Recorded 02/12/20For more information visit   fdf.org.uk

Romans 1:16For I am not ashamed of the gospel [c]of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.” Hebrews 10 1 to 18 16“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” 17then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” 18Now where there is [e]remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin. Hebrews 11: 13These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off [e]were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. 15And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them. Galatians 3:1-18 Galatians 3: 5Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?— 6just as Abraham “believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” 7Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. 8And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.” 9So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham. Habakuk 2: 1I will stand my watch And set myself on the rampart, And watch to see what He will say to me, And what I will answer when I am corrected. 2Then the LORD answered me and said: “Write the vision And make it plain on tablets, That he may run who reads it. 3For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry. 4“Behold the proud, His soul is not upright in him; But the just shall live by his faith. Matthew 16Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. 17But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues; 18And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles. 19But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. 20For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

Disciple Up #180 Shepherding: Feeding & Defending the Flock By Louie Marsh, 10-7-2020   Intro. An e-mail poured in! Disagreement on what I said about Witness Lee and the Local Church. Episode 73-74.   So what is the duty of teachers and shepherds when it comes to dealing with doctrinal error and, sometimes, out right heresy? Let's take a look!   Everyone – Leaders Included – Must Watch Their Mouth!   Yes, I am very well aware that we'll be judged for every careless word we speak. I'll go even further we are also commanded not to lie and not to condemn our brothers when we disagree with them   “34You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. 36I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, 37for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”” (Matthew 12:34–37, ESV)   “4Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.” (Romans 14:4, ESV)   “6The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. 8For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's.” (Romans 14:6–8, ESV)   “1“Judge not, that you be not judged. 2For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when there is the log in your own eye? 5You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.” (Matthew 7:1–5, ESV)   TEACHERS AND SHEPHERDS HAVE DUTIES FROM GOD   FEED AND LEAD:   When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. (Jn 21:15–17).   However, pastors and teachers aren't just commanded to teach and lead the flock. We are also called upon to defend it when necessary. James says teachers are under a stricter judgement and this tension between not being judgmental but being discerning and defending your flock from harm, is part of the weight of that judgement.   Ezekiel tells us that if the watchman doesn't warn those under his care he will be condemned. So yes, I am very aware of this and living with the weight of this greater judgement is something I agreed to take on when I became a teacher and pastor.   WATCHMEN – PROTECTING THE FLOCK   “1The word of the Lord came to me: 2“Son of man, speak to your people and say to them, If I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and make him their watchman, 3and if he sees the sword coming upon the land and blows the trumpet and warns the people, 4then if anyone who hears the sound of the trumpet does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. 5He heard the sound of the trumpet and did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But if he had taken warning, he would have saved his life. 6But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them, that person is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman's hand.” (Ezekiel 33:1–6, ESV)   “3Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. 4For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.” (Jude 3–4, ESV)   “5And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” 6And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, “ ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; 7in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.' 8You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”” (Mark 7:5–8, ESV)   Should We Name Names?   “11But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party.” (Galatians 2:11–12, ESV)   “19holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, 20among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.” (1 Timothy 1:19–20, ESV)   “16But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, 17and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already happened. They are upsetting the faith of some.” (2 Timothy 2:16–18, ESV)   If the people involved are public figures – like I am – the answer is yes!   THE PRICE OF LEADERSHIP:   “1Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. 2For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.” (James 3:1–2, ESV)   God's judgement is based on what you know.   “20For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20, ESV)   That's the only way His judgements can be just. He can't condemn or justify you if you didn't something was right or wrong.   “47And that servant who knew his master's will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating. 48But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.” (Luke 12:47–48, ESV)   “12Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— 13each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. 14If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.” (1 Corinthians 3:12–15, ESV)

Paul Arrives at Rome 11After three months we set sail ina ship that had wintered in the island, a ship of Alexandria, with the twin gods[a]as a figurehead.12Putting in at Syracuse, we stayed there for three days.13And from there we made a circuit and arrived at Rhegium. And after one day a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli.14There we foundbrothers[b]and were invited to stay with them for seven days. And so we came to Rome.15Andthe brothers there, when they heard about us, came as far as the Forum of Appius and Three Taverns to meet us. On seeing them,Paul thanked God and took courage.16And when we came into Rome,Paul was allowed to stay by himself, with the soldier who guarded him. Paul in Rome 17After three days he called together the local leaders of the Jews, and when they had gathered, he said to them, Brothers, though I had done nothing against our people orthe customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.18When they had examined me, theywished to set me at liberty, because there was no reason for the death penalty in my case.19But because the Jews objected, I was compelledto appeal to Caesarthough I had no charge to bring againstmy nation.20For this reason, therefore, I have asked to see you and speak with you, since it isbecause ofthe hope of Israel that I am wearingthischain.21And they said to him, We have received no letters from Judea about you, and none ofthe brothers coming here has reported or spoken any evil about you.22But we desire to hear from you what your views are, for with regard to thissect we know that everywhereit is spoken against. 23When they had appointed a day for him, they came to him at his lodging in greater numbers. From morning till eveninghe expounded to them, testifying tothe kingdom of God andtrying to convince them about Jesusboth from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets.24Andsome were convinced by what he said, but others disbelieved.25And disagreeing among themselves, they departed after Paul had made one statement:The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet: 26Go to this people, and say,You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive.27For this people's heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed;lest they should see with their eyesand hear with their earsand understand with their heartandturn, and I would heal them. 28Therefore let it be known to you thatthissalvation of Godhas been sent to the Gentiles;they will listen.[c] 30He lived there two whole years at his own expense,[d]andwelcomed all who came to him,31proclaimingthe kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christwith all boldness andwithout hindrance.

The Vision is in the Tension, by Senior Pastor Fred Garcia

No matter life's circumstances, we are called to live in the Tension. It is a tension between heaven and earth, between God's culture (Kingdom culture) and the world's culture. There are many challenges associated with living and making decisions in that tension which is so ramped up right now and at the forefront of a lot of issues. Defining the Tension -Merriam Webster defines tension as an “inner striving, unrest, or imbalance often with physiological indication of emotion.” We feel the tension, it's creating all kinds of emotions right now because there is an imbalance - not between right & wrong, truth & deception, justice & injustice or even life & death …but between heaven and earth. The tension includes those things, and each are important…But the tension we are feeling & experiencing right now is an imbalance between Kingdom Culture & the World's culture. Culture as defined by Jon Claussen is the sum total way of living passed on from generation to generation. So it's not just any one of those things, but the sum total of those things which comprise the culture in which we are currently living and the culture which we desire to live and to be passed on for generations to come. And the tension comes because of the imbalance…Romans 8:19-22 19 For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. 20For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. There is a recognition and longing by creation itself for the revelation and restoration of Kingdom Culture. Here's the good news…Jesus lived in this tension & thrived! This is what He has equipped us to do as well… Join Pastor Fred as he continues to elaborate on following Jesus' example as we seek to no merely survive, but to thrive in challenging times.

Acts 17:1634 (ESV) Paul in Athens 16Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols. 17So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there. 18Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said, What does this babbler wish to say? Others said, He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinitiesbecause he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection. 19And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? 20For you bring some strange things to our ears. We wish to know therefore what these things mean. 21Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new. Paul Addresses the Areopagus 22So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. 23For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: To the unknown god. What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. 24The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, 25nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. 26And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, 28for In him we live and move and have our being; as even some of your own poets have said, For we are indeed his offspring. 29Being then Gods offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. 30The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead. 32Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked. But others said, We will hear you again about this. 33So Paul went out from their midst. 34But some men joined him and believed, among whom also were Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them.

John 5:19-20 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed Every thought, every word, and every action Jesus took were strictly instructed and guided by the leading of the Spirit of his Father. While he walked among men, he, however, lived with his heavenly Father. The testimony of his life was evidence of his spiritual position and disposition. A testimony is a piece of evidence, a proof, a witness to a ascertain or authenticate the reality or existence of something, event, or action. Inspired by Albert Mohler, the Briefing, November 22, 2018. Christians have always been a worshiping people; singing, rejoicing, giving thanks. Thanksgiving is odd for secular people who do not know Whom to thank. {There is a desire within us all to be thankful • Thanksgiving is fundamental to the purpose for which we were made. • Thanksgiving is the right disposition of the created to the Creator. Everyone, everything that exists owes the Creator gratitude for its creation & life. – Albert Mohler} {Ingratitude is at the heart of sin. 20For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Romans 1:20-21} Through creation, all mankind can know God, but refuses to honor him, nor give him thanks. Refusal to give thanks is at the root of all sin: lust, adultery, greed, jealousy, etc. Adam and Eve were put in the garden of Eden provided by God with riches and abundance of food and beauty, but they did not trust God’s goodness. Instead of being thankful, they obsessed on the one thing he did not give them. They thought, “I know what is best for us, God either does not know what is best for me or does not care what is best for me.” Ingratitude is rooted in a distrust of God’s goodness. The [serpent’s] lie was an assault on both God’s generosity and his integrity. Neither his character nor his words were to be trusted. This, in fact, is the lie that sinners have believed ever since – the lie of the not-to-be-trusted-because-he-does-not-love-me-false-Father. – Sinclair Ferguson, The Whole Christ. How often do we do the same, surrounded by good things, in so much abundance that we cannot even account for what we have, but obsess about what we don’t have? That’s just stuff. {Thankfulness is at the center of Paul’s theology I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. Phil 4:11b} In prison or chains or free, in danger or safety, in hardship or ease – content When we are ungrateful, we are saying, “God, you have not provided for me.” “I do not trust you to give me what I need.” In our homes: Instead of being grateful for all our spouses are, we focus on what they are not. Instead of being grateful for all our children are, we focus on what they’re not. Instead of being grateful for all our parents are, we focus on what they’re not. We are astounded by people’s sense of entitlement. They don’t feel any need to give thanks, like they deserve everything they have. We need to be on guard against the same sense of entitlement in ourselves. We need to be thankful to God for all that he’s given us. Every morsel of food, a home and household, a job to make money, every family member, every friend, our church. We are grateful for our lives, for creation, but especially for his salvation. 16Rejoice always, 17pray without ceasing, 18give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. – I Thessalonians 5:16-18 Challenge: Express thankfulness to people close to you Express thankfulness for God to someone outside the faith At the end of all things, there will be singing, rejoicing, and thanksgiving from believers & the host of heaven in the presence of God the Father, Son, and Spirit.

Romans 3:19–28    19Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.    21But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.    27Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

Ecclesiastes 5:10–20    10He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. 11When goods increase, they increase who eat them, and what advantage has their owner but to see them with his eyes? 12Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much, but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep.    13There is a grievous evil that I have seen under the sun: riches were kept by their owner to his hurt, 14and those riches were lost in a bad venture. And he is father of a son, but he has nothing in his hand. 15As he came from his mother’s womb he shall go again, naked as he came, and shall take nothing for his toil that he may carry away in his hand. 16This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go, and what gain is there to him who toils for the wind? 17Moreover, all his days he eats in darkness in much vexation and sickness and anger.    18Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot. 19Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil—this is the gift of God. 20For he will not much remember the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with joy in his heart. Mark 10:23–31    23Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” 24And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 26And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, “Then who can be saved?” 27Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” 28Peter began to say to him, “See, we have left everything and followed you.” 29Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, 30who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. 31But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”

Pastoral Intern (from the University of Chicago Divinity School) Virginia White on Christianity's long obsession with bodies and ways that might be helpful for us to think the about our fleshy selves today.Reading:1 Corinthians 12:12-20For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot were to say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body’, that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear were to say, ‘Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body’, that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many members, yet one body.

Romans 3:9-20 (English Standard Version) No One Is Righteous 9What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 10as it is written:    "None is righteous, no, not one; 11no one understands;   no one seeks for God. 12All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;   no one does good,   not even one." 13 "Their throat is an open grave;   they use their tongues to deceive." "The venom of asps is under their lips." 14 "Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness." 15 "Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16in their paths are ruin and misery, 17and the way of peace they have not known." 18 "There is no fear of God before their eyes." 19Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

Calvary Baptist Church - Canyon Texas - David Crump, Pastor

There is joy in God’s presence. “You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” Psalm 16:11 CS Lewis wrote in 1941 and later, in 1942, gave a sermon entitled “The Weight of Glory” about a concern he had with Christians in his day. His concern was that Christians had come to believe that Christianity was more about self-sacrifice than about love. His fear was that Christianity had become a begrudging work rather than a joyful relationship with God. Psalm 98:1-3, 4-6, 7-9 Vv1-3 – Celebration of the Lord’s Deliverance – by the worshipping congregation at the temple V1 – The “new song” celebrates the Lord’s victory. The “marvelous things” the Lord has done – the “wonders” or “miracles” – God’s miraculous deliverance, protection, and providence for the Israelites. His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. V2 – He has made known his salvation and his righteousness – to the nations. It is the kindness of God that He reveals His salvation and righteousness - not only in his dealings with Israel in the Old Testament, but ultimately, He made known his salvation and righteousness through His Son. Simeon, the righteous and devout man of God, when he saw Jesus in the temple for Jesus’ consecration said: “For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all people” Luke 2:30-31 You and I know about God’s salvation because of His kindness to us. You and I were lost and in darkness, but He made His salvation known through His Son. V3 – His love and faithfulness to Israel have been on display for the entire world to see. God’s power is demonstrated for his love and faithfulness to Israel. God’s wonders and power bring glory to Him and blessing to the nations. God shows his power and wonders for a purpose. They are for a reason. He doesn’t do tricks. They bring glory to Him and blessings to us. Vv 4-6 – Worship of the Great King – by all the peoples of the earth All the inhabitants of the earth must prepare themselves for God’s coming by worship: • Shouting for joy, • Bursting into jubilant song (filled with or expressing great joy or triumph) and • Making music Vv 7-9 – Joyful anticipation of God’s Coming – by the whole creation Creation echoes and reverberates the joy of God’s people as they anticipate the coming of the Great King. All of created life in the sea and on the earth sings for joy before the Lord. The Apostle Paul wrote that the creation groans, waiting in anticipation for God’s complete work. One day the creation’s groaning will give way to rejoicing. 19The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. 20For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21that[i] the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. (Romans 8:19-21) There is joy in God’s presence. There is joy in knowing Him. Matt Chandler’s illustration – I can talk to you about Brenda. I can tell you how great she is. About the cute things she does. How well she takes care of me and our kids. How much she loves me. But that won’t make you fall in love with her. God must be experienced first-hand. Don’t settle for anything less. Remember His wonders that bring Him glory and you blessings. Remember He has made His salvation known to you by His Son Jesus Christ. Remember He is coming to complete His work. “You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” Psalm 16:11

18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. 24Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.  26For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.  28And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32Though they know God’s decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

1 Peter 2:18-25 (English Standard Version)  18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. 19For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. 21For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
