At the Small Data conference recently, one of the talks looked at hardware advances. It was interesting to see a data perspective on hardware changes, as many of us only worry about the results of hardware: can I get my data quickly? In or out, most of us are more often worried about performance than specs. However, today I thought it might be fun to look at a few changes and numbers to get an idea of how our hardware has changed, in the march towards dealing with more and more data. Big data anyone? In thinking about disks, I saw a chart that looked at the changes from HDD (hard disk drives) to SDD (solid state drives) to NVMe (Nonvolatile Memory Express). These show read speeds going through the list from 80MB/S to 200MB/s to 5000+MB/s. That's a dramatic change, and not one only in high-end arrays. There are off-the-shelf drives you can put in a desktop that read this fast. If you think about some of the early IBM drives, which read at 8800b/s. Growth in disk speed, inside the timeline of our careers, has grown by a few orders of magnitude in read speed. Read the rest of The Vast Expansions of Hardware

Welcome to another episode of the Dongfang Hour China Aero/Space News Roundup! This week we bring you updates on Galactic Energy, China’s maritime satcom industry and the product offerings therein, and China’s role in the regional EO market.1) Galactic Energy completed a RMB 200 million Series A funding round in September, a round that was announced last week. This is the company’s first round in ~11 months, having raised RMB 150M in Oct 2019. The company has now raised ~RMB 500 million across 4 rounds, a feat made even more remarkable by the fact that they were founded just under 3 years ago. Funding will go towards accelerating the development of the company’s Pallas-1 and Ceres-1 rockets. Galactic Energy is now quite likely one of the top 4 commercial launch companies in China, along with Landspace, iSpace, and Expace. This status in the “Big Four’ of China’s commercial launch sector was enhanced just a couple of days ago, when on November 7th 2020, Galactic Energy held the inaugural launch of its solid rocket the Ceres-1, becoming the 2nd private company in China to put a satellite into orbit after iSpace. Ceres-1, much like iSpace’s Hyperbola-1, is a small rocket with a capacity of 350 kg into LEO. While similar in propulsion technology, there are some definite slight differences between the two rockets (separation method, attitude control). Galactic Energy’s inaugural launch on the 7th was also noteworthy in that it was commercial, with the Ceres-1 rocket launching the Tianqi-11 satellite for Guodian Gaoke, a satellite manufacturer that plans to launch and operate the Tianqi constellation. 2) In the maritime space, we saw announced this week that the CASIC 2nd Academy, in partnership with the China Unicom Research Institute and the government of Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province, completed China’s first “Low Orbit Broadband Satellite + 5G Maritime” test. While the article, which was originally published by the CASIC 2nd academy, does not explicitly mention Hongyun, the phrasing of LEO broadband satellite would almost certainly imply that the tests were using the Hongyun test satellite, launched in late 2018. Separately, as part of China’s 11/11 “Singles Day”, a huge online shopping day, we saw SinoSat release its 11/11 promotions for its Haixingtong maritime satcom service, which included 200MB of free data upon signing up, RMB 800 per year for unlimited voice. SinoSat is a ChinaSat subsidiary with focus on several high-value verticals with global requirements, i.e. maritime satcom, and has been building out a maritime satcom service for several years using satellite capacity from ChinaSat among others.3) Finally, the Asia-Oceania Group on Earth Observations (AO GEO) held a meeting in Changzhou early in the week. The event was attended by 15 countries and several international organizations. “China is playing an important role in the Asia-Oceania region, with the second highest number of remote sensing satellites in the world and its application of Earth observation shifting from experimental use to business services”, said Wang Qi’an, the director of the National Remote Sensing Center of ChinaThis has been another episode of the Dongfang Hour China Aero/Space News Roundup. Today on the show, Windows 95 is back and this time you can run it on Mac and Linux. Take a trip down memory lane with Wordpad, phone dialer, MS Paint, and Minesweeper. And we are headed to information apocalypse? Don’t panic, some say the solution is more technology. SEGMENT 1 The New York Public Library is using Instagram Stories to bring classic novels to your smartphone The New York Public Library—an essential provider of free books, information, ideas, and education for all New Yorkers for more than 100 years is doing something unprecedented! It is now using Instagram's Stories feature to make classic novels more accessible and enticing to read, especially to the younger generation. It has teamed up with ad agency Mother in New York to create "Insta Novels," which turns classic pieces of literature into animated digital novels illustrated by various visual artists. These digitized versions take inspiration from the layouts of the original classics, featuring elements that reflect the novels' designs. The full digital books will be posted as Stories: simply hold the screen to read a page and lift your finger to turn it. If you're a fast reader, just let it play on its own to watch the animated elements move on screen. Here is the link to the promo on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/BmvKKlhFv0w/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=embed_loading_state_control #InstaNovels SEGMENT 2 Windows 95 is now an app you can download and install on macOS, Windows, and Linux Windows 95 is the operating system that’s now used as a yardstick for what’s possible on modern devices and platforms. We’ve seen Microsoft’s popular OS appear on the Apple Watch, an Android Wear smartwatch, and even the Xbox One. Today, someone has gone a step further and made Windows 95 into an app that you can run on macOS, Windows, and Linux. A Slack developer created Windows 95 app where you can use Wordpad, phone dialer, MS Paint, and Minesweeper. They all run pretty well. Except for Internet Explorer which is not fully functional. The app its only 129MB in size and you can download it over at Github for both macOS and Windows. Once it’s running it surprisingly only takes up around 200MB of RAM, even when running all of the old Windows 95 system utilities, apps, and games. If you run into any issues with the app you can always reset the Windows 95 instance inside the app and start over again. SEGMENT 3 Browser plug-ins that spot fake news show the difficulty of tackling the ‘information apocalypse’ According to some, the world is headed toward an information apocalypse. A combination of AI-generated fakes, fake news gone wild, and faltering confidence in the media means soon, no one will be able to trust what they see or hear online. But don’t panic yet, says a subset of these same prophets, for a solution, is already at hand: more technology. This week, two projects were unveiled that are intended to act as buffers between the world and fake news. The first, SurfSafe, was created by a pair of UC Berkley undergrads. The second, Reality Defender, is the work of the AI Foundation, a startup founded in 2017 that has yet to release a commercial product. Both projects are browser plug-ins that will alert users to misinformation by scanning images and videos on the webpages they’re looking at and flagging any doctored content. Of the two plug-ins, SurfSafe’s approach is simpler. Once installed, users can click on pictures, and the software will perform something like a reverse-image search. It will look for the same content that appears on trusted “source” sites and flag well-known doctored images. Reality Defender promises to do the same (the plug-in has yet to launch fully), but in a more advanced manner, using machine learning to verify whether or not an image has been tinkered with. Both plug-ins also encourage users to help out with this process, identifying pictures that have been manipulated or so-called “propaganda.”

(HEAR ALSO, the audio MP3 of this parody, on this podcast site; ALSO, the larger 200MB high res version) "IT'S THE MOST MISERABLE TIME OF THE YEAR" MP3 AUDIO: "Loose Bruce" Kerr's latest parody/satire on the holidays. Fun? Yes. Stress? Definitely. Flu? Hopefully not but...Loose Bruce Kerr is an irregular feature on the Dr. Demento and Jim Bohannon syndicated radio and internet shows.Bruce opened for "Weird Al" Yankovic back in the day. He is now an attorney at Oracle. He took off 20 years to perform music & comedy, returning to law after he scratched that itch. Now he records his background tracks one vocal and instrument at a time, then videos it with live lead vocal in "The Garage" in Mountain View, CA in the heart of Silicon Valley (where all must start in the garage). Bruce is now an attorney at Oracle. email Bruce at: BKerrLaw@aol.com
I've been slacking lately. There have been 2 shows since the last update. One was a Thanksgiving double-header (4 hours of Silent Noise Radio!) featuring my dad. I'm just going topost that one today. Sorry about the low audio quality. I didn't want to have a file that was over 200MB (yes it's that low quality).Bobby's Half:1Kanye WestSay You Will2AutechreSimmm3BorisNo Ones Grieve, Part 24*Des ArkMy Saddle is Waiting5*John Titor1976 (IBM 5100)6*John Titor2000 (Correspondence)7JesuConqueror8Bang On A Can1/1Music For Airports (Brian Eno)9CommonUniversal Mind Control10Fly Pan AmAutant Zig-Zag11DeadbeatRise Again12City of CaterpillarMinute-Hour-Day-Week-Month-Year-(The Faiths in My Chest)13Sigur RósÁgætis byrjun14Black Ox OrkestarAz Vey Dem Tatn15HrstaTomorrow Winter ComesKniffen's Half:1Aids WolfVampire KingThe Lovvers2ColleenI'll Read you a storyGolden Morning Breaks3KniffenIt ends in my dreams4Joanna NewstromThis side of the BlueThe Milk-Eyed Bartender5MothousTheres a shifting6Primal ScreamSwastika Eyes7MstrKrftSweet JusticeThe Looks8PortisheadRoadsGlory Times9Tokyo Ska Paradise OrchestraSoul GrowlStompin on Down beat Alley10TrentemollerMoan (Vinyl Dum Mix)11At the GatesLegion (Slaughterford Cover)Slaughter of the Soul (Bonus Tracks)12Diablo Swing OrchestraBalrog BoogieThe butcher's Ballroom13Jean Michel JarreChants MagnetiquesImages14Klaus SchulzeFloatingMoondawn15GongFloating AnarchyFloating Anarchy16GongStone Innoc FrankensteinFloating Anarchy17KraftwerkComputer WorldComputer World[[DOWNLOAD]]
