The Truth Against the World (Square Tire Books, 2023) is a brilliant literary fantasy about a divided, dystopian America on the verge of war. Shane, a former Irish combat soldier with a murky past, wants to save his young friend Georgie O'Halloran, who turned his stories of Celtic history and folklore into a beautifully illustrated book. She gave the book to her professor, who published it under his name and earned millions. It became a wildly popular video game that continues to inspire a violent transformation of America by roaming gangs of murderers. Shane, already trying to free Georgie from the psychiatric institution where she's been hidden by her money-grubbing stepmother, is devoted to finding the deceitful professor. They embark on a cross-country journey, tracked by those in power and pursued by murderers. David Corbett is the author of seven novels, which have been nominated for numerous awards, including The Edgar. His short fiction has twice been selected for Best American Mystery Stories, and a collaborative novel for which he contributed a chapter—Culprits—was adapted for TV by the producers of Killing Eve and will appear on Hulu in December 2023. His writing guides The Art of Character and The Compass of Character have been widely praised and used by both aspiring and established authors, and he is a monthly contributor to Writer Unboxed, an award-winning blog dedicated to the craft and business of fiction. Prior to his career as a novelist, Corbett was a senior operative with the private investigation firm of Palladino & Sutherland in San Francisco, where he worked on a number of high-profile criminal and civil litigations, including the Cotton Club Murder Case, the People's Temple Trial, Jordan Chandler v. Michael Jackson, a RICO litigation brought by the Teamsters membership against union leaders associated with organized crime, and a number of marijuana prosecutions linked to the Coronado Company out of San Diego. In his spare time, Corbett enjoys reading history, taking hikes in the Catskills with his wife and Wheaten terrier, Fergus, and tending to the sprawling garden on their property.

The Spy with a Cold Nose”. David Corbett worked as a private investigator for fifteen years and played an integral role in a number of high-profile criminal litigations including the Cotton Club Murder Case and the People's Temple Trial. In the 1990s he pivoted to writing, receiving critical acclaim for both his novels and short stories. In addition to his fiction, he has written two books on the craft of writing - The Art of Character and The Compass of Character - both of which are widely used by authors and screenwriters in shaping powerful stories and creating memorable and iconic characters. David also teaches at events nationwide, coaching authors on the subtleties of writing.
In 1966 in London, the World Cup Trophy, at the time the Jules Rimet Trophy, was stolen from a stamps exhibit during church service. The job was a professional one, and the trophy would elude authorities for months. Englands legendary Flying Squad was tasked with tracking the trophy and bring her home, but it would be instead uncovered by Pickles, a local sheep dog. While Pickles was able to enjoy minor fame, the trophy was on borrowed time, only to be once again stolen 13 years later in Rio, having still yet to resurface. In this heist story rife with familiar tropes, was it two separate jobs, or as we may have discovered, was it all one big plan by Pickles' owner, David Corbett, to have the fanciest salsa bowl in the UK? Find out today y'all.

The Authors on the Air Global Radio Network is proud to present this exclusive IN CONVERSATION interview with American's legendary writer JAMES LEE BURKE and writing instructor, author and former private investigator DAVID CORBETT. James Lee Burke is an American author, best known for his Dave Robicheaux series. He has won Edgar Awards for Black Cherry Blues and Cimarron Rose, and the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America. JLB's 40th book, THE PRIVATE CATHERAL: The Shondell and Balangie families are longtime enemies in the New Iberia criminal underworld and show each other no mercy. Yet their youngest heirs, Johnny Shondell and Isolde Balangie, rock and roll-musician teenagers with magical voices, have fallen in love and run away after Isolde was given as a sex slave to Johnny’s father. As he seeks to uncover why, Detective Dave Robicheaux gets too close to both Isolde’s mother and the mistress of her father, a venomous New Orleans mafioso whose jealousy has no bounds. In retribution, he hires a mysterious assassin to go after Robicheaux and his longtime partner, Clete Purcel. This hitman is unlike any the “Bobbsey Twins from Homicide” have ever faced. He has the ability to induce horrifying hallucinations and travels on a menacing ghost ship that materializes without warning. In order to defeat him and rescue Johnny and Isolde, Robicheaux will have to overcome the demons that have tormented him throughout his adult life—alcoholism, specters from combat in Vietnam, and painful memories of women to whom he opened his heart only to see killed. www.jamesleeburke.com David Corbett is the author of six critically acclaimed novels. Hey there word nerds! Today I have the pleasure of hosting David Corbett on the show! I know David as a highly sought-after instructor at ITW’s Master CraftFest and CraftFest, and it’s easy to see why as he is the award-winning author of six novels, the story collection Thirteen Confessions, and the writing guide The Art of Character which has been called “A writer’s bible.” His short fiction has been selected twice for Best American Mystery Stories, and his non-fiction has appeared in several places including Writer’s Digest magazine where he is a contributing editor. David’s latest novel The Long-Lost Love Letters of Doc Holliday (OMG best alliterative title EVER!) about the possible discovery of the most notorious love letters in American history was released in 2018. So listen in as David and I discuss this awesome book and how to ratchet up the realness of your story’s world through its characters. In this episode David and I discuss: Choosing the right details to include that will pull your readers in. How to inject verisimilitude into your story. Why you should use real people as the basis for character creation. Crafting deeply flawed and relatable characters. Weaknesses, wounds and flaws, what they are and how to use them right. Plus, David’s #1 tip for writers. For more info and show notes: DIYMFA/com/234

Authors on the Air host Pam Stack welcomes writing instructor and author David Corbett to the studio. About my guest: David worked for the San Francisco private investigation firm of Palladino & Sutherland, and played a significant part in a number of high-profile criminal and civil litigations. Ballantine purchased David's first novel, The Devil's Redhead. Widely praised, it was nominated for both the Anthony and Barry Awards for Best First Novel of 2002. About the book: The most notorious love letters in American history--supposedly destroyed a century ago--mysteriously reappear, and become the coveted prize in a fierce battle for possession that brings back to life the lawless world evoked in the letters themselves. Lisa Balamaro is an ambitious arts lawyer with a secret crush on her most intriguing client: former rodeo rider and reformed art forger, Tuck Mercer. In his newfound role as an expert in Old West artifacts, Tuck gains possession of the supposedly destroyed correspondence between Doc Holliday and his cousin and childhood sweetheart, Mattie. Given the unlikelihood the letters can ever be fully authenticated, Tuck retains Lisa on behalf of the letters' owner, Rayella Vargas, to sell them on the black market. But the buyer Tuck finds, a duplicitous judge from the Tombstone area, has other, far more menacing ideas. As Lisa works feverishly to make things right, Rayella secretly enlists her ex-marine boyfriend in a daring scheme of her own. When the judge learns he's been blindsided, he rallies a cadre of armed men for a deadly standoff reminiscent of the moment in history that made Doc famous: The Gunfight at the OK Corral. Pretty Little Parasite by David Corbett (included in the anthology The Best American Mystery Stories of 2008)
Ex Private Investigator, failed academic, frustrated musician, and inspired writer--David Corbett himself is perhaps the best illustration of his theory on character development: if the back-story wound is evident, the person will act in meaningful and poignant ways. Only an author who has done his share of living could pen so piercing a tale of the dedicated cops, oddly talented citizens, and self-interested criminals, developers, and politicians who struggle in the incendiary communities of California. DONE FOR A DIME may be the definitive California crime novel--a work as acute, eclectic, ambitious, heart-wrenching, and vast as the state itself.
