Show Notes: Dennis Crowley started working for Tyco International in 1996 and spent five years in Europe, spending half his time in Paris and two and a half years in Brussels. This experience was enjoyable as it allowed him to work, sightsee, and travel around Europe.  During his time in Europe, he had the opportunity to visit every country in Europe, including Spain, Italy, the UK, and France. He moved back to Florida, then lived in New England for 25 years before settling just south of Boston. Dennis worked in various divisions at Tyco until 2007, where he worked in their healthcare group, which spun off into Covidien. He spent 12 years doing mergers and acquisitions, and this experience opened his eyes to the exciting developments in the healthcare space, particularly in medical devices. Lifestyle in the US vs. Europe Dennis compares the pace of life in the US and Europe. In the US, you can get what you want when you want it, but, for example, In Paris most shops are usually closed on Sunday. The cultural norms that may not be easily understood by someone new to the country. Dennis shares a few examples of cultural differences in the workplace. Working in Europe can be a transition from class to a job, but it also presents challenges. For example, Italian culture is different from French culture, and while many people may speak multiple languages, to communicate effectively, one must be respectful of their second language and be able to express ideas in clear and appropriate ways. Medical Devices in the Healthcare Industry Dennis finds this field to be an interesting one as there are always problems to be solved and technologies to be developed. In terms of medical devices, the majority of medical devices have been based around surgical procedures, such as abdominal, cardiac, and peripheral surgeries. These opportunities are often focused on general surgery, such as fixing clots, repairing hernias, and C sections. Interaction with physicians and leaders in their field helps in finding companies to build portfolios for a company. He highlights the role of physicians as advisors who often collaborate with engineers and industry professionals to develop new products and address gaps. This collaboration is crucial for addressing the needs of patients and improving efficiency in the healthcare system. Dennis also talks about recent breakthroughs and innovations. He stresses the importance of having a community of physicians who can help address their needs in the marketplace, and  emphasizes the need for companies to have a strong network of physicians who can help develop innovative products that address the needs of their patients and improve the overall quality of care. Mergers and Acquisitions in the Health Industry Dennis highlights the importance of understanding the business and aligning with the company's vision. He discusses the potential of acquiring companies and their trials, such as Given Imaging, which uses a pill cam to take multiple pictures at once. This technology is used for diagnosing bleeding or other issues in the gastrointestinal tract. It is also an alternative to colonoscopy. Dennis explains that an M&A executive spends most of their time analyzing deals and negotiating them, while also working with the company to understand its business, technologies, and strategies. He mentions that there is also a lot of time spent networking and explains how former classmates and friends had played a role in both his business and personal relationships.  Influential Harvard Professors and Courses The conversation turns to Harvard and golf as Dennis talks about his time on the golf team and that he is still in touch with friends made while on the team. He shares how playing golf has facilitated both business and personal relationships. He also discusses the current etiquette around smartphones on the golf course.

In this episode, you will learn: • Kris Benson's story • Kris' journey to his real estate investing career • About Kris' authentic relationships • Kris' different streams of horizontal income • What Kris does to stay healthy and functional • Kris' life happiness index score • What Kris is excited about today • Kris answers a random question from the GoBundance card game • How to learn more about Kris Benson • Plus, so much more! Before launching his successful commercial real estate investment career, Kris Benson recognized that “just because all the dogs are barking at the same tree doesn't mean it is the right tree.” As Chief Investment Officer at Reliant Investments, he works with institutional investors in the self-storage industry – confident in the risks he has taken, the career changes he's navigated and the tree he has established his investment platform on. After accepting his first job in sales “because I had diapers to buy,” Kris learned both the value and difficulty of cold calling while developing a “hunter” mentality. He joined the medical device industry with Covidien and later transitioned to Intuitive Surgical, famous for its DaVinci robot. After 12 years in the industry, Kris decided quality of life was more important to him than hitting sales targets. Before turning 30, Kris elected “to find a way to stop trading my time for money and to let my money make money.” He launched his commercial real estate journey, appreciating the value of investing in tangible assets. Kris started investing in small residential units, expanding to commercial multifamily properties before exploring self-storage as an “interesting asset class.” At Reliant Investments, Kris focuses his leadership and management skills on the commercial real estate company's investment committee, which determines what self-storage properties to purchase while growing equity and creating passive income streams for investors. Kris is recognized as a self-starter and team player who always wants the ball when time is running out. He loves to discover the “why” behind investments, challenges, and opportunities. His ultimate goal is to help people understand that there is no one route to success: In his words, “School = Job = Security = Retirement = Happiness doesn't have to be the path.” Investors and entrepreneurs, in particular, are afforded multiple opportunities to chart their own course, enjoying flexibility when it comes to work, travel, personal time and creating new goals. Focused on making the most of his own quality time, Kris loves to play – spending time outdoors mountain biking, skiing, boating, and hiking as well as coaching his son's lacrosse team. While listening to a podcast, he was struck by the words: Risk is the tariff paid to leave the shores of predictable misery. Kris' risks have paid off as he has charted his own course while building Reliant into an institutional quality investment platform.

We recently caught up with medtech start-up extraordinaire, Mike Wallace, who shares his insights and experiences with the Medsider community. Mike is the co-founder and CEO of DeVoro Medical, an early-stage medical device company focused on developing innovative devices for peripheral thrombectomy.Mike says the initial idea or concept for a medtech company is just 5% of the journey. Medsider is all about shining light on that other 95%!In this conversation with Mike, he'll give tips to newcomers, including some mistakes entrepreneurs often make in the early stages of their companies. Mike explains how you can pivot when an idea doesn't pan out, and he'll give his expertise on seed-stage fundraising as well as navigating the regulatory waters. Plus, more on his current work with DeVoro, including how he started working on problems related to peripheral thrombectomy. But first, a bit more on Mike's medtech background:Prior to co-founding DeVoro Medical, Mike served as Chief Technical Officer and VP of Operations for Silk Road Medical. Mike has spent most of his professional career working for medical device start-ups, some of which include Target Therapeutics (acquired by Boston Scientific), BARRX Medical (acquired by Covidien), and Baxano (acquired by Trans1). In addition, Mike has co-founded and exited three other start-ups: TW Medical and GW Medical Neuro (both acquired by Stryker Corp) and CardioProlific (acquired by Philips). Mike graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Delaware, holds a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Davis, and is the co-inventor or primary inventor on over 130 issued U.S. patents. Before we jump into the conversation, I wanted to mention a few things:First, I'm trying something a little different with this next series of Medsider interviews, which will be focused entirely on stories from some of the most compelling medtech and healthtech startups across the globe. Here's the deal: I've asked these founders and CEOs to answer a series of questions, which I've converted to audio stories with the help of some professional voiceover artists. Think of these conversations almost like recorded fireside chats that you might find on Audible. They're short and sweet, but packed with tons of great insights.I've never tried this before, so let me know what you think!Second, if you're into learning from proven medtech and healthtech experts, and want to know when the next interview goes live, head over to Medsider.com.
