John and Paige talk with photographer/tour manager/many-hat-wearer Ashley Gellman about life on the road and at home. Ashley has worked with artists like Bartees Strange, Jamie xx, Jonas Brothers, boygenius, and is currently on the road with Lucy Daucus. She's a larger-than-life personality, and she breaks down her life on the road, her upbringing as an independent kid doing her own thing, her relationships with the early artists she worked with, found family amidst her touring peers, and how to capture the best shot without being in the way. Amidst a whirlwind of travel and work, Ashley talks in depth about how she's grown to embrace being home, and how she balances the "all-in" touring lifestyle with the calmer vibes of being back in Philadelphia. If you can manage to pin her down, Ashley does do photo shoots for hire when she can, so follow her on IG. Almost 300,000 flights will take off over the summer months and whilst most holidays go without a hitch, others fail to get off the ground.Last year saw widespread disruption at airports, in August there was an exceptional IT failure at the UK's main air traffic services provider NATS over a bank holiday Monday which affected around three quarters of a million people. Strikes and staff shortages also caused disruption. In this programme we'll discuss what your rights are if your trip is delayed or cancelled, as well as a Brexit passport rule which has been catching thousands of passengers out.Felicity Hannah is joined by consumer rights champion Jane Hawkes and Sean Tipton from ABTA, which is the association of travel agents and tour operators.Presenter: Felicity Hannah Producer: Sarah Rogers Editor: Jess Quayle(This episode was first broadcast on the 3rd of July 2024.)
There were no happy landings at UK airports after a national IT network meltdown left passport e-gates firmly closed - and many thousands of exhausted travellers stranded. The tech failure bricked e-gates to blank screens as Border Force officials at airports including Heathrow, Stansted and Luton processed passengers the old-fashioned way - by hand, at the desk. Some travellers complained of waiting for hours without food and water - or even bed town on terminal floors as onwards transport options were overcrowded or services had finished for the night. For the latest on the travel implications for your summer holiday - and some important passport news, The Standard podcast is joined on the line by Sean Tipton, spokesperson for travel association Abta. Resort Spotlight: Les 7 Laux (Les Sept Laux) LOCATION Very close to the city of Grenoble, just up in the Belledonne mountain range in the Dauphiné Alps. Drive into the city of Grenoble in around 30-40 minutes traffic permitting and the airport is just over a one hour's drive away too. Chambery is also just 50 kms away, so another option for flying in and then driving from Calais would normally take about 8.5 hours. The train would be London-Paris-Lyon-Grenoble and then a taxi or a bus from there. Not too difficult because you get pretty close in Grenoble and whilst that might not be for everyone...could do a nice little stop over on the way too. THE SKI AREA There's 120 km's of ski trails that link up three separate villages, there's about 22 ski lifts, mostly chairs and some drag lifts plus a gondola too, and 90% of the lifts are 10 years old or newer. Within that 120 km's there's 45 individual ski trails that include green, blue, red and black, so genuinely something for every level of skier and snowboarder . It is mostly blues and reds, but there's 7 black runs so pretty significant and it has the largest freeride area in the region including the The Vallons du Pra trail which is basically a marked off-piste route. The beginner's terrain is extensive and separate from the main ski area and then there's a nice progression onto green runs after that. The majority of runs are blue and red so we are talking about all this freeride terrain but at the end of the day it's beginners and intermediates that actually get the best deal here. SKI SCHOOLS There's the ESF, ESI: Pro 7 school that also offers freestyle and freeride lessons and a dedicated snowboard school called Slash and another called Easy Riders. They all say they have English speaking instructors.SNOW RECORDVillage is 1350, and it goes up to 2400 metres, that's more than a 1,000 metre vertical and with its location they get good snowfalls through the winter and well into spring here. A lot of the slopes are north westerly facing so they hold the snow well.THE VILLAGES The main village is Prapoutel and it's where most of the accommodation and facilities are. It's mostly self-catered accommodation and there's a good choice of both value and higher end places to stay and it's easy to walk around – it's not tiny in any sense but it's not like a massive town either. It does have that sort of purpose built feel, but in a nice way and the views across the valley are fantastic. Why is it called Les 7 (seven) Laux?It was founded in the 1960's / 70's by a group formed of 7 communes in the area.Where do I go for a pint?O'Bar BUWhat about a bit of Tartiflette ?Le Rocher Blanc Prices for the actual holiday?A starting price of around £1500 for the whole apartment for a week and that includes a return Eurotunnel fare peakretreats.co.uk or call them on 023 9283 9310Peak Retreats is the French Alps specialist and they have been organising holidays in the French Alps for over 20 years. Hello! It's been exactly 5 years since my surgery and diagnosis of a glioblastoma. So, I sat down the other night and just wanted to talk. In these 5 years, I've become a better person. Someone that I knew I could be but it took a life changing diagnosis to bring it out. I know who I am. While I still can, I want to help as many people as I can and just be happy. I'm so thankful for having a great team taking care of me, living in a place where I can get the treatment I need, and above that, YOU. My family and friends have been so helpful and like I say in this episode, I've met so many wonderful people over these years that I may otherwise never have met. While it may not have been under the ideal circumstances of meeting, I wouldn't change it. All the people who I've met through the Discord/Reddit community, Omerta, ABTA, SG1 peeps, people who reach out to ask me questions or share their own experiences. I know I'm missing some but know that you are amazing and I'm the lucky one to have met you. Anyone can feel free to reach out to me. I had a rough few months but you all get me through things. Also, since I changed my recording environment a bit, I had to make some audio tweaks and let me know how it sounds. I had to lower a couple things and I'm still not set on the best EQ settings. I'll be tinkering around a bit more though. I just really wanted to release this on a very big milestone on this brain cancer rollercoaster! I love you all! Chris

In this interview we talk to Amy Dawes, founder of the Australasian Birth Trauma Association (ABTA). ABTA is a national charity committed to reducing the instance and impact of birth-related trauma whilst supporting affected women, families and health professionals. Amy discussed: - her birth experience and diagnosis of pelvic organ prolapse 16 months later. She talked about how this diagnosis affected her psychologically and impacted on her quality of life. She became scared of doing any movement or exercise and felt that she would make things worse. - how, with some assistance of a pelvic health physiotherapist and connecting with other women who had returned to exercise after prolapse diagnosis, Amy started to feel more confident in her body - how she connected with Elizabeth Skinner, psychologist, who mentioned the need for a birth trauma association here in Australia...and how the ABTA was formed (and a special shoutout to Christine Percy and Christine Pistone!). - the goals of the ABTA and how they support women through Peer to Peer mentoring. - that birth trauma can be physical, psychological or both. - the need for more comprehensive antenatal education, so women are aware of the potential risks associated with birth, without scaring the heck out of them. "Why didn't anyone tell me that this could happen?" - the fact that health care providers can also suffer trauma associated with supporting women in birth and that they don't always receive the help that they need. - how important it is to have care in birth that is supportive, nurturing and empowering. - how birth can trigger past trauma, which women may need psychological help for - how we can help support the ABTA and spread the word of these services to the community The ABTA relies on donations, so if you would like to help please reach out to the ABTA via the links below.
