We follow the rise of civilization and of powerful empires in West Africa before the slave tade, based upon iron-working and the traffic in gold and salt across the Sahara, followed by the spread of wealth and power southward, towards the gold fields and the tropical forests, and finally the reverberating impacts of the arrival of Portuguese traders on the coast, which paved the way for the rise of the Atlantic slave trade. The More Sibyl Podcast Presents: 뿌리를 위하여| Back to the Roots: Why I Sent My American Kid to a Nigerian Boarding School — The One With Dr. Elizabeth Ajayi-Bridges | Episode 26 (2025)Can you imagine sending your 8-year-old back to your home country for school after immigrating to another country? Before you say, “Heck no!” Especially my Naija people, you might want to listen to this episode. This week, we're joined by the remarkable Dr. Elizabeth Ajayi-Bridges: educator, community builder, founder, and mother extraordinaire. We both met in boarding school almost three decades ago. In this captivating conversation, she takes us on a journey through her life as a Nigerian-American woman shaped by both Brooklyn and boarding school. And yes, she made the bold decision to send her American-born daughter back to Nigeria for high school, not as a punishment, but as an intentional investment in identity, discipline, and legacy. From her own cross-continental upbringing to raising bicultural children, Dr. Elizabeth shares how early immersion in a Nigerian boarding school (beginning at age 8) sharpened her independence, forged resilience, and even earned her an unforgettable nickname. We unpack what it means to truly belong, as she redefines home not as a zip code but as “where you make an impact.”This episode is for every parent questioning how to raise grounded kids in a culture that often feels disconnected from their roots, and for anyone navigating the in-between of heritage and new beginnings. We also explore her passion for civic leadership, the role of faith, and how she's preparing the next generation to lead with both heart and heritage.Tune in now to learn why, for some families, going “back” can be a powerful step forward.Contact Dr. Elizabeth directly: e.ajayibridges@gmail.comLet her know you found her through The More Sibyl Podcast.

You're praised for the baby. But not asked about your body. You're celebrated for becoming a mother. But rarely supported as you grieve the version of you that no one else seemed to notice disappeared. This episode is for every Black woman who gave birth and then wondered where she went. In this featured National Black Girl Month™ 2025 conversation, Dr. Phoebe Ajayi—a physician, maternal health advocate, and author of After Birth: Postpartum Recovery of the Body and Mind—joins us to name the invisible weight of postpartum identity loss. From her clinical roots in Nigeria to practicing medicine in the UK, Dr. Ajayi weaves personal story and global insight into a rare reflection on what happens after the delivery room. She doesn't just ask what care we deserve. She asks what care we've never been taught to expect. She shares: Pelvic floor dysfunction, identity shifts, and global disparities in postpartum care Cultural traditions that hold us (like Nigeria's omugwo) and Western systems that often don't How to protect your identity after birth—and why that work is still yours, even years later Boundaries, grief, and the quiet work of nourishing yourself after motherhood begins This isn't about going back to who you were. It's about meeting who you've become—with more language, more grace, and more support than you were ever offered before. *This is a special National Black Girl Month™ feature by Dr. Phoebe Ajayi originally airing on www.youtube.com/@nationalblackgirlmonth Access the free toolkit at NationalBlackGirlMonth.com Connect with Dr. Ajayi at phoebeajayi.com Connect with Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown at www.instagram.com/dr.rikesha Connect with Felicia Ford at www.threads.net/@friendscallmefe Join Momentum Lab: https://lab.feliciafordandco.com More about Dr. Ajayi: Dr Phoebe Ajayi is an NHS GP with experience across numerous specialities, here in the UK and her home country, Nigeria. So far, so good. Zags are 2-0 after taking care of business against ASU in the Kennel JPage and the “boots on the ground” Spokane boys recap the closer than anticipated matchup with the Sun Devils. Braden Huff continues to shine, we appear to have found some portal gems in Ajayi and Battle, and boy is it fun to watch Ryan Nembhard orchestrate an offense.
