I LOVE coffee. I love the ritual of my morning cup, I love the smell, the rich aromas, the flavour. I got into the coffee scene during my time in Australia and my obsession has continued. And if you're interested in the benefits of coffee, then this episode is going to be for you!Roasted coffee is a complex mixture of thousands of bioactive compounds, and some of them are recognised to have health-promoting properties. Things like the polyphenols, the products of roasting the beans and even the caffeine itself. A lot of people ascribe these benefits to the antioxidant profile of the chemicals they contain which have also been shown in lab, animal and human studies to be anti-inflammatory. But, the mechanisms that support its potential impact on reducing the risk of a number of conditions may be a lot more complicated. It's fairly well recognised that habitual coffee consumption is associated with a lower risk of diseases, like type 2 diabetes, dementia, chronic liver disease and even certain types of cancer., but there are a number of coffee paradoxes. For example, it is well known to raise blood pressure in the short term, but it's associated with lower rates of cardiovascular disease?I've got Alex Manos and Al Higham from Exhale coffee to talk about everything you've wanted to know about coffee. Exhale Coffee launched in lockdown 2020 and is the first coffee in the UK to be sourced and roasted for your health as well as your performance. It's organic and speciality grade but uniquely, through 9 different independent lab tests, is high in healthy plant phytochemicals, or polyphenols, and some vitamins. We talk about sourcing beans, the effect of stressed crops and how that develops the flavour as well as the health benefits (xenohormesis), the process of extracting the bean, how you roast it for a better taste and health profile. The different brew methods and why that would impact the amount of bioactives in your cup, the process of decaffeination and if you can preserve the health benefits, and we do a nerdy dive into the mechanisms of why coffee may have health benefits.Check out the recipes and app here: https://apple.co/3G0zC0ZJoin the newsletter and 7 day meal plan here: https://thedoctorskitchen.com/newsletter/Check out the socials here: https://www.instagram.com/doctors_kitchen/You can try the coffee for 40% off with the code RUPY at check out : www.exhalecoffee.comDisclaimer: I have a role as advisor for Exhale Coffee that I want to declare and it's because I believe in the founding principles of this family company, the way they go about creating the product has so much attention to detail and I love the flavour! Today, my guest Alex Manos and I are talking about a VERY important topic in Nutritional Therapy and Functional Medicine - Mould and Mycotoxins.    This might be new terminology for you but don’t switch off, mould allergy or mycotoxicosis is increasingly becoming one of the biggest players in the chronic health game. When you’ve tried everything from gut work to hormonal treatment to dietary changes and looking at stress and lifestyle and you still have no answers, then it’s worth thinking about whether you’ve ever lived in a water damaged property because mycotoxins could be causing you a significant problem.    We also potentially exacerbate the issue with contaminated foods too: coffee, peanuts, grains and dried fruit being just some of the culprits.    When Alex lists the associated symptoms with mould illness and mycotoxins I think you’ll be shocked how relatable they are to you, so do keep listening and if you want to discuss any of the topics covered in this episode further then don’t hesitate to get in touch.    The sponsor of this episode couldn’t be more perfect wither, because its Exhale coffee, which is free from mycotoxins, heavy metals and pesticides - but I’m going to tell you more about that later and give you a discount code to try some for yourself. Alex Manos has been a big old inspiration to me over the years. When I first came to know of him he was practicing functional medicine, which is basically nutritional therpay but levelled up somewaht. Using nutritional science and treating the human body (and mind) as the interconnected system that it is with the aim to heal the body through prevention (good nutrition) rather than cure (medication). One of the things I love about Alex is his relentless pursuit of answers, which has lead him recently into transformational breathwork and a very recent (and medically supervised) experience with psychedelics. This is an area of mental health that is very much taboo and those who dabble with such things are often placed in a similar category to those who use recreational drugs so I knew that when tackling this on the podcast I needed someone who would be able to give some gravitas to their experience and I knew Alex was the man for the job!

Angela and Alex Manos continue with their in-depth conversation and in this episode focus on modern psychedelics and how it offers an opportunity to assess trauma from a completely different perspective. Your mind and emotions are intrinsically connected and Alex explains why the most important aspects of your health are not physically based but mind-based and how modern psychedelics can bring the opportunities to address and process life events allowing any individual to move forward.   KEY TAKEAWAYS A lot of us suppress our emotions as part of conditioning in today’s society We all have storms, emotions and energy within us that is contributing to our resiliency and health. The psychedelic session made me feel like I was out of my body but in the cosmos somewhere. I experienced a disconnection that helped me to appreciate the strong connections I have in my life, the psychedelic experience helped me to see the real connections in my life. It’s a dissolution of yourself and having no boundaries, you are energy, everything and everyone. We are all from the same place, whatever you want to call that place and we are a projection, wearing a mask and playing a role that is placed upon us by society. The most important parts of health are not physically based but mind-based. When there is trauma in a life story it can manifest as a physical illness further on in life. Your mind and emotions are interconnected. Trauma is energy that wasn’t discharged at the time of the event and subsequently becomes stored in the nervous system of the body. To achieve an equilibrium the body needs to discharge the energy Modern psychedelics is about assessing trauma from a completely different perspective.   BEST MOMENTS ‘It was life-changing – the breathwork session’ ‘It was an experience that was so profound and so moving’ ‘We are so in our own story we are blind to it and we need structure to be able to be within it’   VALUABLE RESOURCES High Performance Health podcast series Transform your sleep DNA optimization  High Performance website  Alex Manos website How to Change Your Mind - The New Science of Psychedelics by Michael Pollan           ABOUT THE GUEST Alex Manos   "Alex is a mentor, lecturer, coach and clinical. Angela is with Alex Manos - mentor, lecturer, coach and functional medicine practitioner. Alex uses the concept of resilience to create a holistic approach to health and performance and in Part 1 of this 2 part interview, he discusses with Angela physical, mental, emotional and spiritual resilience. In this fascinating in-depth look at what it truly means to be resilient Alex explains how being resilient is all about flexibility and being able to adapt to the needs placed upon us. If you can understand how to develop a strong sense of self and build your resilience then you will be able to put your best self forward and thrive.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Physical resilience is our ability to bounce back from an adverse event and is related to areas such as cortisol levels, blood pressure and blood glucose. Homeostasis is achieving a set point which you seek to maintain. Allostasis is the idea that we have to adapt according to the circumstances and environment to maintain homeostasis. Allostatic overload is the concept that when the stress system has been overwhelmed, you no longer return to the set point. View stress holistically, there is controlled stress and uncontrollable stress, you should be looking for resiliency for the things you can’t control. Self-awareness is a foundational element for resilience because you need to be aware of what is going on for you both internally and externally to understand where you are. Resilience is flexibility in everything, it’s about being able to adapt to the needs that are being placed upon us. Emotional resilience is being able to regulate your emotional state during challenging times. We can cultivate positive emotional states consciously such as gratitude and love and this has an impact on our HRV, immune system and stress. Spiritual resilience is about understanding your needs and having a purpose in your life. You need to understand what your values are and what’s important to you.   BEST MOMENTS ‘We are with every client trying to build or cultivate resiliency’ ‘Emotional resilience is being able to regulate your emotional state during challenging times’ ‘Meaning can come from adversity and can build our resilience’   VALUABLE RESOURCES High Performance Health podcast series Transform your sleep DNA optimization  High Performance website  Alex Manos website Resilient by Rick Hanson       ABOUT THE GUEST Alex Manos   "Alex is a mentor, lecturer, coach and clinical. In this week's episode I'm joined by fellow Nutritional Therapist, Alex Manos. Alex is a very, very highly regarded practitioner in the UK and he holds numerous degrees and qualifications, among them a BSc in Nutritional Therapy, an MSc in Personalised Nutrition and he is a member of the Institute for Functional Medicine - and we're talking all about gut health...but not as you know it.    I’d been waiting and waiting to do a dedicated episode on gut heath on my podcast, and when Alex agreed to be a guest I was beyond excited to finally talk all things gut bacteria, the microbiome, SIBO, oral microbiome and so much more.   We start our discussion off with how important it is to look after your dental hygiene because yes, you’ve guessed it, your oral microbiome is linked to your gut microbiome and both need to be in tip top condition for things to work smoothly. We then go on to talk about SIBO, Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth, which is what I suffered from multiple times myself and what lead me down the path of finally healing my body from chronic illness and becoming a Nutritional Therapist.    We also discuss probiotics and why you don’t need to take them every morning like that influencer you saw shotting Symprove on their stories, we discuss the importance of diet and what to do if you find you can’t tolerate grains and legumes, we discuss antimicrobials, the gut Brian axis and so much more.   This is a MUST LISTEN episode if you want to upgrade your health. Huge thanks to Alex for sharing his wisdom and knowledge with me and I hope you leave the episode feeling empowered and ready to take your health to the next level.   As ever, if you enjoy this episode I would be beyond grateful if you could help me to spread the word about state of mind by sharing the episode to your Instagram stories and writing me a rave review on the apple podcasts app.   gracekingswell.com @gracekingswell   alexmanos.co.uk @alexandermanos
